t’s time to ring in the new year! For many people, the new year feels like a fresh start, an opportunity to set new goals and focus on self-improvement. I feel like it’s especially important to take full advantage of the year 2022 as an opportunity to seize the new beginning we all so desperately need after a pandemic that has loomed over us for the past two years! It’s time to rediscover normalcy and routine, as well as learn how to incorporate lessons learned during the uncertain times that we are looking forward to leaving behind us.

1. A FRESH WARDROBE FOR A FRESH START

I have to be honest with you, very few things can motivate me to hit the gym as much as sporting cute new workout apparel! Just because you are planning to work hard and get sweaty doesn’t mean you can’t have cute new clothes while you do it!

You don’t have to go crazy and replace everything you own, either; sometimes just a few new pieces will get you feeling ready to conquer not only the gym, but the entire year ahead.

2. MARRY OLD HABITS WITH NEW IDEAS

I think it is safe to say that everybody’s workout routine saw some major changes when we were told that we had to stay home indefinitely almost two years ago! From talking with a lot of former gym goers they said that they do not want to spend the money for a gym membership when they now have equipment at home. Yet, they also said they are no longer using the home equipment like they once did. If being part of a workout community is what really had you moving… go back to it! You are worth the time and money! I’m not suggesting that you allow your new equipment to turn into a clothes rack.Yet, why not freshen up your workout routine for 2022 by combining pre-covid gym workouts and fitness classes along with home workouts?

The study revealed October homebuyers pay a 2.9% premium while May homebuyers pay an 11.5% premium. In the Birmingham Business Journal, Andy Medici further reported, “the four-month stretch between October and January is the best time of the year to make a purchase, the best day of the year is Dec. 5 — when buyers have paid just a 1.5% premium over the home’s value.” And “the second-best day to close on a home was Dec. 26, when buyers paid a 2% premium, followed by Jan. 6, with a 2.2% premium and then Nov. 9, with a 2.3% premium.”

This is great news for homebuyers who persevere through the holiday season, when so many take a break. If you are waiting until spring to resume a home search, you might miss the chance to gain an edge in today’s marketplace.

With less buyers looking, there are less offers to compete with. That means your offer may get accepted with friendlier terms compared to spring. In recent years home inspections and financing contingencies are less attractive to sellers, but with houses staying on the market a tiny bit longer sellers are more negotiable.

Are You Grinding Your Teeth? by: Dr. Paul Koch at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry

Dr. Koch explains the the symptoms of chronic teeth grinding and the possible harm.

It seems innocent enough, and many of us do it at night during sleep without ever knowing it – grinding our teeth. However, if this becomes a habit, chronic teeth grinding – or, in medical jargon, bruxism – can result in serious issues: Think tooth cracks, headaches, TMJ, and more.

Our resident expert dentist, Dr. Paul Koch of Koch Aesthetic Dentistry, breaks it down for us.

WHAT IS TEETH GRINDING? Teeth grinding (or bruxism) is a condition in which you grind, gnash, or clench your teeth. Although teeth grinding can happen during the day if you are feeling anxious or stressed, it most often occurs in your sleep. Sleep bruxism is usually caused by sleep disorders like sleep apnea, stress, an abnormal bite, or missing and crooked teeth.

WHY IS TEETH GRINDING HARMFUL? Although some people may never come to a point where they need to treat their teeth grinding, others may suffer serious consequences like tooth fracturing, tooth loosening, and even loss of teeth. In severe cases, chronic grinding can reduce healthy teeth to stubs and may require root canals, bridges, crowns, and even dentures.

In addition to dental issues, chronic teeth grinding can also cause headaches and Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD, TMJ). And, last but not least, severe and chronic teeth grinding can change the shape of your teeth, your jaw, and even the way you look.

HOW WOULD I KNOW IF I GRIND MY TEETH? Because most teeth grinding happens at night, it can often be tricky for you to notice and know for sure that you are doing it. Luckily, your dentist will be able to tell if you are severely grinding your teeth by examining the teeth’s surface.

This is why it’s important to keep up with your regular dental cleaning appointments. Should your dentist notice that you are causing damage to your teeth and jaw by grinding, he can come up with a treatment plan to help minimize the damage.

You might need to wear a nightguard during your sleep to protect your teeth. If stress is the cause of your teeth grinding, I can discuss stress reduction techniques with you. And, in rare cases, medications like muscle relaxants could be prescribed to ease the severity of your grinding.

WHAT MORE SERIOUS ISSUES CAN TEETH GRINDING LEAD TO? It can lead to headaches, TMJ, and even tooth loss. If you suspect that you may be grinding your teeth, or if you experience newly occurring headaches and changes in your bite, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

If you start watching what you eat now, it will make the new year much easier for you. Over the holidays you should limit sweets, try and eat more greens and vegetables than casseroles and breads, and try to take a walk at least once a day. You can start by slowly making changes in your diet.

Instead of starting out cold turkey, slowly make the small changes that help you attain a healthy lifestyle.

How much of your health starts in the kitchen?

Absolutely. You are what you eat. Your body is a straight reflection of what you put in it, so make sure you are choosing wisely! I fundamentally believe that good health starts in our kitchens and that our children are only as picky as the options available to them. Growing research and evidence support the fact that food helps fight diseases. Nutrition plays a major role in the prevention, treatment, and cure of most diseases and sickness. The vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants found in our food are the front-line defense against allergies, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, and most chronic illnesses. You can’t outwork a bad diet.

MOTIVATION The foundation was brought to my attention after my best friend, John Michael Pierce, was diagnosed with esophageal cancer at twenty-four years old earlier this year. He was a patient of the foundation, and after seeing all of the amazing things they were doing for him and others with similar conditions, I decided to get involved to become a part of a foundation that was making both intentional and impactful changes for the G.I. cancer research community. John Michael went on to be with the Lord on November 17, after a five-month long battle with esophageal cancer. I plan to continue to serve the Reed Foundation in order to highlight the importance of funding cancer research and patient care in his honor.

POSITIVE TAKEAWAYS FROM 2021 I think the most positive takeaway from this year is the ability to see how much of an impact John Michael made in both of the Birmingham and G.I. cancer communities alike.

MOTIVATION I began my journey with Hand in Paw when I witnessed the magical effect a Therapy Team had on a friend’s son who was going through chemotherapy at Children’s of Alabama. From that moment on, I knew I wanted to volunteer with HIP and make a difference in children’s lives through Animal-Assisted Therapy.

A few years later, our family welcomed a beautiful English Cream Golden Retriever named Kenzi into our lives. Now an Advanced Therapy Team, Kenzi and I visit Children’s of Alabama regularly. After seeing the excitement and smiles that Kenzi brings to children, I can’t imagine a better way to volunteer my time and resources. Not only do I get a lot out of it, but every time Kenzi puts on her HIP scarf, and we pull into the Children’s of Alabama parking deck, she gets excited and starts whining, wanting to get out of the car and see the kids.

POSITIVE TAKEAWAYS FROM 2021 Virtual Visits- Just like other businesses and nonprofits, COVID-19 has challenged HIP to think outside the box. HIP put together a strategy to move forward during the pandemic. When schools moved to virtual learning, that strategy included a focus by Hand in Paw on literacy through its Sit, Stay, Read program. Working from home with your pet. It’s no secret that our pups are thrilled to have us working from home, and it sure doesn’t hurt to have a little more canine companionship in our lives these days.

MOTIVATION I became involved in 2018 with the BCRFA Charity Bowl; a youth football game between Hoover and Gardendale. It was a year after my diagnosis and so empowering to be involved. A true “full circle” experience. I was diagnosed the week before the event in 2017 and crying behind my sunglasses the whole time. I didn’t want to hear about cancer, but as a Hoover cheer coach I had to attend. Getting involved was lifechanging. It lit a fire in me, and I’ve supported the organization as much as possible since then.

POSITIVE TAKEAWAYS FROM 2021 Enjoying time with my husband and children has been the most positive thing to come out of the chaos. I had a baby girl in September 2019. We have been able to be present and see many milestones that we would have missed. The time to slow down and spend with family has been precious.

We are a blended family and have five children between us. Our children will be grown in the blink of an eye so this extra time has been a blessing.

MOTIVATION The Wellhouse exist to provide opportunities for restoration and safety for children and female victims of human sex trafficking. From meeting these women and hearing their stories, it is impossible not to want to find every way to help them. By serving on the leadership committee for the Junior Board, I’ve been able to mobilize our JB team to raise significant money for The Wellhouse throughout the last couple of years.

Due to the pandemic, the 2021 Grace Gala was rebranded as Grace Gala Gives which ended up being our largest fundraising campaign ever orchestrated by the Junior Board. ROAR FOR THE CURE The ROAR for the Cure Committee raised over $300,000 towards cancer research that directly benefits the UAB Department of Radiation Oncology’s efforts. Dr. Hunter Boggs was the evening’s keynote speaker. He gave a presentation on his research into Head and Neck Cancers. Dr. James Bonner, Chairman of the UAB Department of Radiation Oncology also spoke about the impact that ROAR has had on the department’s research efforts and honored the achievements of the ROAR committee.

Our Local World of Wine & Charity Charity is one of the most wonderful things that helps define our humanity. Ever reader of this publication, from the most ardent to the most casual, cannot help but notice how many charitable events are celebrated on almost every page. It is one of the things that helps make the Magic City so magical.

We like to pay attention, if you will pardon the pun, to the charitable endeavors we see making the greatest impact. Our local world of wine has two amazing charities, Tum Tum Tree (tumtumtreefoundation.org), and the oldest wine charity in Alabama, the MS Wine Auction (nationalmssociety.org). These two charities are very dear to our hearts, and we are excited to help them.

We at Piggly Wiggly also directly took part in assisting some local charities this past year. We worked with a group wineries from Vintage Wine Estates, including Firesteed and Qupe, to provide 4,000 meals to the Community Food Band of Central Alabama.

As we begin this year, we look back at all the good we hope we have done. And we hope that we continue to help others do even more good this year.

Lastly, we worked with our friends at Ole & Obrigado to assist other charitable groups. The truly good folks at Ole & Obrigado are among the most generous folks we’ve ever met in the wine industry. So much so that 100% of all proceeds from their delicious rose, Liquid Geography, are directly given to various charitable organizations. Quite an impressive concept, in our eyes.
