WHY DID YOU START IGNITE? When I moved to Birmingham, I was delighted by the fitness community and wellness options, but surprised to discover there wasn’t already a boutique cycling studio. I was a cycling instructor in Boston and had a passion for curating exceptional exercise experiences for others and creating a supportive community among my riders. So really, it was a matter of seeing an opportunity and going for it.

WHAT IS A TYPICAL IGNITE CYCLE CLASS LIKE? During our signature rides, we have you in and out of The Bike Room in 45 minutes.

Your time is valuable, and we respect that. The room is dark and the music loud, creating the space for you to focus on your ride and leave whatever else is going on in your life at the door.

WHAT SETS IGNITE APART FROM ANY OTHER WORKOUT? What we do is about so much more than riding bikes in a dark room to loud music. We are on a mission to connect our riders to the highest parts of themselves and to their fellow riders. Yes, our riders love the workout, and as a result of our higher purpose, the community is eagerly open to new faces and always happy to help & cheer them on.

Through the class, we ride to the beat and do some functional choreography during each song - some songs are fast, some songs are slow, but each song is designed to encourage you to be your best.

Your instructor will coach you along the way on how to do each move to get the most out of it. You’ll notice that our bikes don’t have cages for you to strap your tennis shoes into. Instead, we loan you complimentary cycling shoes that clip into the bike. This gives you a more efficient and

Why Can I Never Keep My New Year’s Resolution to Lose Weight? >>> Every year I say I’m going to lose weight as a New Year’s Resolution, and every year I don’t.

I know you’re not a personal trainer, but what am I doing wrong from a mental standpoint to stay motivated? Of course I’m busy, but who isn’t? In fact, it seems the fittest people I know are the busiest. It’s effecting my relationship with my spouse, and just importantly, it’s effecting the way I see myself. It upsets me because of the way I look, and it upsets me that I don’t have the willpower and disciple to see-through a year-long fitness and diet regimen.

Let’s be clear... you are definitely NOT alone in this popular, yet rarely achieved, New Years Resolution! Research shows losing weight and getting more exercise are among the top 3 most commonly broken New Years Resolutions. It’s important to determine your type of motivation. Self-determination theory suggests that “the type of motivation is more important than the amount of motivation when setting out to achieve a weight-loss and/ or exercise goal.” Which of these statements feels most like you?

- I feel like my spouse doesn’t find me attractive so I have to lose weight.

External motivation is purely external to your interest in losing weight and is done in efforts to obtain a reward or avoid a negative consequence. Once those are gone, so is the motivation.

- I would feel like a failure if I didn’t lose weight.

Introjected motivation is also motivated by external reasons to change, but is done for slight internal reasons as well. Unfortunately, these internal reasons have a negative focus...our least favorite “friends” guilt and shame.

- It is important to me to be successful at losing weight.

Identified motivation is when you view losing weight as a positive or valuable behavior. It holds a strong sense of personal importance.

- It is a fun and exciting challenge to accomplish my weight loss goals.

Intrinsic motivation is when you get simple pleasure from doing the activity. This motivation involves focusing on the task, and provides interest, enjoyment, and challenge.

Research based on this theory of motivation has shown the primary factors in the maintenance of exercise and physical activity are enjoyment, perception of competence, and intrinsic reasons for weight loss. Think about this when choosing your diet plan and exercise routine.

They are not “one size fits all.” If you enjoy sweets, a low carb diet will cause you to feel like you are restricting or depriving yourself. You run the risk of feeling like someone is dangling a cookie in front of your face constantly.

Eventually, you will eat the cookie, feel like you failed at the diet, and just go ahead and eat the entire box of cookies. Maybe counting calories would be a better option because you can eat everything in moderation. This concept functions the same with exercise. If you hate running, work with someone on a weight training routine. If you don’t want to feel like you are working out at all but love dancing, try incorporating a Zumba or pole-dancing class into your routine.

It really does begin with your type of motivation! If you are finding enjoyment in it, you will make time for it. If you are making the time for it, you will begin to see results. Once you see results, you might find yourself more intrinsically motivated to keep it up for the year..or maybe even for life! Considering it a lifestyle change and not a diet might be a good start because the mere mention of the word “diet” usually has a tendency to make us just wanna run out and eat a tub of ice cream!

The year of changed fitness behaviors. The year where we vow to cook more and eat out less, exercise more, sit less, increase water, decrease soda, join a gym, take the class, and lose some weight. While those are all worthy goals, what if those were also 2019’s resolutions? And 2018… and 2017… If these are all things we want to achieve and are fully capable of doing, why is it so difficult, year-after-year, to stick to?

Most times, resolutions are all or nothing -- one misstep and everything goes out the window. Resolutions are usually lofty ideals that are rarely planned with no road map to get there. What would 2020 look like if we took small, consistent steps toward an overall healthier life rather than massive, sporadic leaps? Try a different approach this year by looking at your objectives from the following perspectives.

1. I will be patient with myself.

The old adage, “good things take time,” is true – especially when it comes to your health. Here’s a tip: the sooner we accept the fact there will be good days and not-as-good days, the more endurance we’ll have for the long haul. Keep this timeline as a guide. At 2-4 weeks, you will begin to notice change. At 4-6 weeks, people closest to you will notice change.

1. Get Right on Price. It’s very easy to over price your home. Spending too much time on the Internet can walk you down that path quickly. Leaving,“wiggle room” or “room to negotiate” is detrimental to your sale and only helps other sellers in the area.

A CORPORATE CHALLENGE Building a Home for the Embry Family

November stirred many of us into the giving mode, and not much is more important than a family home just in time for the holidays. The Embry family will soon receive the keys to their new home! “Thank you so much for this amazing blessing,” says Valkeisha. “We are so grateful to be here with this organization (Habitat Birmingham).” And together with RealtySouth, and other community volunteers, this project will soon come to a dream come true. What do you do as a financial advisor?

We work with people to help them connect their life plan to their financial goals. We then implementing a risk plan to complement. It requires an ability to ask good questions and to listen carefully. There’s an important need to be able to connect, relate and empathize, with people. It’s humbling and brings great joy!

You’ve been in business for 20 years now, what have you seen? What’s different?

In 1999, when I put my name on the door, stamps were 33 cents, the world had 6 billion people, the Euro was new, Bill Clinton was being impeached, Star Wars Episode I and Friends were the rage, Lance Armstrong won his first Tour de France, Y2K was the biggest threat to world security, interest rates were over 8%, and the Dow had just crossed 11,000 (it’s now over 27,000). We were at the end of the Greenspan’s era of ‘irrational exuberance’ and about to face the end of the ‘tech bubble’. Then, 911 happened in 2001. Personally, I had just gotten married and had a child. In retrospect, no one in their right mind should have started a business back then. My ‘overnight success’ seems to only have taken 20 years.

Walton Financial has a smaller more personable feeling. What’s the difference between Walton and the bigger investment companies?

Having started my career in 1993, at one of the big Wall Street firms (I trained in the World Trade Center), I knew what I didn’t want for myself and clients! A typical client experience in the ‘big box’, still means meeting with a sales representative usually wearing a suit, in a big building, in a typical sterile office, then you fill out a ‘risk tolerance’ questionnaire and ‘Oz-like’, here’s your plan, which happens to be the same plan as their other clients - off the shelf investment plans. Our office was the first commercial building in Alabama to apply for LEED Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). It feels different!

What is an ‘independent’ financial advisor?

“An independent advisor is a professional who offers independent advice on financial matters to their clients and recommends suitable financial products from the whole of the market”; according to Wikipedia. In our case we ask questions relating to a person’s family and personal history. We discover their life plan – the hopes, dreams, goals, and fears, before we begin work on their financial plan. Then we plan together connecting money life over time.

Why did you choose to go green in your office?

People are choosing us to be the long-term stewards of a sacred relationship dealing with one of their most precious resources, money. A sustainable approach to a career, business, physical building, or a relationship, is the only ethical and authentic approach. In designing our building, we went for the healthiest, most energy efficient, attractive, and sustainable, design at a reasonable cost.

Walton Financial was recently awarded the Forbes Best-In-State Wealth Advisor honor. What makes this award different?

We’ve often been recognized for our charitable work in the community, but to be recognized for our life’s work is a career highlight! The rankings of the Forbes’ Best-In-State Wealth Advisors’ list are based on in-person and telephone due-diligence meetings, evaluating each advisor qualitatively and on a ranking algorithm that includes client retention, industry experience, compliance records, firm nominations, and other quantitative criteria.

What’s the biggest mistake people make in planning for their future?

Underestimating how long they are going to live and the shear amounts of money it takes to maintain a lifestyle, often well into one’s 80s or 90s. Our social systems like social security and Medicare, won’t be enough and were never intended to fund decades of someone’s financial life. Sure, changes need to be made to these systems, but it can really put pressure on someone’s financial plan if they don’t think long term.

What’s the number one piece of advice you’d give a college graduate?

You’ll be amazed at how much money can grow over time, start early and automate your plan.

Saving a little bit regularly over time is the recipe. We work a lot with generations of families and it’s common we have the “money talk” with client’s kids as they are saving and working, and as they’re growing up, especially before going off to college.

What do you say to families and couples who have significant disagreements regarding money decisions?

For years I’ve given the advice to couples to have an overnight retreat outside the house. Share things that are important with each other and make a loose agenda. Give money a “safe place” in the agenda, things like budget and savings. But, also remember to dream together. Giving money a “safe place” in the context of ‘life discussions’ can build a stronger team and one that works most effectively together.

You’re heavily involved in the community. What’s your advice for people’s contributions to local interests and charities?

Be passionate and get involved. Join an existing group or cause. Be open to leadership. If it doesn’t exist, start something! Be an entrepreneur. Just participating, you’ll learn lots and make great friends. Birmingham wants and needs participants and unlike other larger cities, most anyone can get involved in enriching and rewarding work. You win, the group wins and the community wins.

We know about the TicketSmarter Birmingham Bowl game, but it’s also heavily connected with our philanthropic community. What contributions does the Bowl make to local charities?

Since 2006, the TicketSmarter Birmingham Bowl has been an active supporter of the Monday Morning Quarterback Club and its charitable arm, the Crippled Children’s Foundation.

When players from the two teams come to town, do they get involved in local charities?

As part of our partnership with the Monday Morning Quarterback Club and their foundation, we work closely with Children’s of Alabama Hospital to arrange a tour of COA for the participating players where they provide gifts and spend time visiting with some of the children at COA. Each summer, Coach Clark and his staff put on a free youth clinic for local youth. How can parents and children benefit and find out more about the clinics?

As part of our Community Outreach, the Bowl conducts a complimentary youth football clinic each summer for youth ages 8-13. For the past several years, Coach Clark has led our clinic, and for the past two years, the clinic was held at the Legacy Pavilion on the UAB campus. Registration for the free clinic normally starts in May @ TicketSmarterBirminghamBowl.com.

All participants receive a complimentary lunch, bowl t-shirt and a voucher for two bowl tickets.

When will be the first game in the new stadium? And what will the new venue mean for the fan experience?

Since starting our game at historic Legion Field in 2006, our goal has always been to provide the best bowl experience for players, coaches and fans during their visit to Birmingham.

We are currently in discussions with the BJCC to continue providing the great Southern Hospitality and Serious Football our fans have grown to love in the new venue.

What is the total economic benefit the game brings to Birmingham?

According to figures provided by the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the TicketSmarter Birmingham Bowl has generated an economic impact of more than $151 million for the Birmingham area over the past 13 years.

Obviously, the SEC affiliation is huge for general local interest in the game, but how great has it been that the The American Conference is developing into a stronger conference?

The American Athletic Conference has been a great partner through the years helping us to deliver many exciting games, especially the last 3 games that were decided in the final minute of the game. The American conference currently has three teams ranked in the CFP top 25.

How many more years do you have with the SEC vs AAC affiliation?

The SEC announced earlier this year that the TicketSmarter Birmingham Bowl will partner with the SEC for an additional six years starting in 2020. We anticipate the announcement of our other partner(s) in 2020.

Jan 2nd seems to be a unique date in the bowl season. How did you go about selecting this date?

As with most bowl games, we work closely with ESPN to identify possible windows during the bowl season. In our 14 years, half of our games have been played in January with the other half in December.
