What We’re Watching in 2023
EINSTEIN
Edge of the Edge
Will it be approved? The venue is part of “The Star” development planned for North Bham. This past Fall, the city announced plans for a new amphitheater that would seat 9k people and bring larger acts to the city on a consistent basis. This exciting announcement is a part of the current conversion of the old Carraway Hospital to a mixed-use development space called “The Star”. The proposed amphitheater has a sleek modern design that features the Birmingham city-line behind the stage, and sunsets at concerts enthusiasts can hardly wait in anticipation to see it in person. The venue looks to match the beauty of other cherished Alabama outdoor spaces like Tuscaloosa Amphitheater and The Orion in Huntsville.
The Star project that the amphitheater is a part of, is planned to also include housing, restaurants, office space, and precious parking spaces where the old hospital once stood. Pictures of random wall art in one of Birmingham’s most famously abandoned buildings could soon turn into pictures of plated meals and music sensations on stage. The 52-acre piece of land was given a 5-year buildout plan in 2021 with a focus on market-rate residential housing, and plans to use the well-recognized star from the former hospital as a centerpiece of the redevelopment concept. As of early December, the city has not set a date to vote on its final approval.
No it’s not the Beach Boys or 60’s doo-wop, but it certainly contains those elements that mix perfectly with a modern technology sound. Super-tight harmonies float around a buoyant spirit in the most infectious tune of the year. #3
2 Be Loved Lizzo
In today’s modern musical landscape, there aren’t many niches left. But Lizzo has definitely found one. The ‘big girl is going out tonight, so screw you’ is owned by Lizzo. 2 Be Loved is another great example. #4
The 30th Billie Eilish
The 30th is a stripped down ballad that tells a personal story that’s both sweet and sad with only an acoustic guitar to accompany Miss Mopey’s soft lyrics.

5 WAYS TO REJUVENATE
for Body, Mind, and Spirit
by: Whitney Renfroe
As a society, we are inundated with different workout suggestions and pressure to maintain a sharp physique. There will always be new classes to try, gyms to join, diet programs to start, and the list goes on. The pressure to stay on top of it all can be daunting and stressful! But what about committing ourselves to proper rest and recovery? Our bodies need time to properly restore themselves to promote heal ing, prevent injury, and grow stronger. For our mental and emotional health, our minds need the same.
1) CRYOTHERAPY
Standing in a -150 F chamber in your underpants for upwards of 3 minutes is rejuvenating? The answer…YES! I was drawn to try cryotherapy for the athletic recovery benefits, such as relief from muscle soreness and joint pain. I became hooked on it for the physiological and mental effects. After a session in the freezer, you can expect to feel your mood elevate almost instantly. Your body will flush with delicious warmth, and your skin will feel smoother. I have also personally noticed a reduction in anxiety after incorporating cryotherapy into my routine once a week.
2) RED LIGHT THERAPY
Red light therapy can be targeted to specific areas, or you can expose your whole body to it through full panels or infrared saunas. Red light therapy boosts healing and energy production at a cellular level, promoting pain relief, skin health, and detoxification. This is a gentle, safe wellness booster.
3) FASCIAL STRETCHING
Fascial stretch therapy is another wonderful way to get into the “hard to reach” areas of the body. Through a series of assisted, hands on stretches, range of motion increases, muscle soreness lessens, and tension is reduced. All you have to do is rest on the practitioner’s table and relax through the process.
4) MEDITATION
Many people think that in order to meditate, you have to be able to stop thinking. Luckily, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Meditation is the practice of learning to observe your thoughts without judgement. When we can witness our thoughts without becoming absorbed by them, we learn that not all thoughts require action and not everything need be controlled. As we build a meditation practice, focusing on the breath can act as an anchor to prevent us from getting swept away. I recommend 10 minutes of meditation a day, but even 2-3 minutes of slow, deep breathing can do wonders for your mind and spirit.
5) YIN YOGA
Yin yoga is unique in that it accesses deep tissue in our bodies. Through long holds in postures that target fascia and deep layers of muscle, the body is encouraged to release stored tension little by little. Controlled breathing during each stretch maximizes this effect. You can certainly practice this at home, but if you are able to attend a led class at any of Birmingham’s wonderful yoga studios, you can expect the teacher to facilitate deep relaxation.
ADVENTURES IN
DIETING
HOW TO MAKE FITNESS A HABIT
It’s a new year. Start it with a new routine and a new you! Try these 10 simple steps.
1) Don’t Eat Too Few Calories. Too few calories leads to a lack of energy, which will keep you unmotivated. It can also lead to injuries.
2) Don’t Treat Exercise Like It’s Punishment. Find something you enjoy, and always mix it up so it’s not boring.
3) Make Sleep A Priority. It will lead to energy, and you’ll see results quicker if you’re giving your body time to heal.
4) Eat Nutritious Foods You Actually Enjoy. No one loves all health food, but there’s so many options, it’s not tough finding lots of things you enjoy.
5) Make Exercise & Diet Convenient. Plan your meals and follow an exercise routine on your schedule.
6) Focus On Your Progress. Set goals and write down everything, whether it was a success or failure.
7) It’s Okay To Eat Some Fun Foods. Stay discipled, but completely depriving yourself never works.
8) Something Is Always Better Than Nothing. Something unexpected come up? No problem. Do your best and if you can only squeeze in a 20 minute walk, go for it.
9) Get A Partner. Nothing will keep you accountable as having a buddy to keep you in-line.
10) Make Sure You Have Fun. Fitness should improve your life, not add stress.

NOW IS THE TIME! TO SPRUCE UP FOR SPRING
Here are seven ways to lift your spirits at home every. single. day.
1) All things greenery. Begin with weed control. Those pesky intruders distract from the pleasure of a beautiful lawn. Call Heritage Lawn and Tree Care to eliminate every single one of them. Begin now for better results (205) 995-3331
2) Front door magic. Are you familiar with first impressions? Of course you are! Coming home to a clean, freshly painted front door will boost your mood after a long day at work.
3) Lighting is EVERYTHING. Clean your windows inside and out. Dust your interior shutters or blinds, open them up, and let the sunshine in! Pro-tip: change all your light bulbs to soft white then let them shine for instant happiness.
4) Designate a bar station for coming home, for entertaining, for a pleasant aesthetic, and always have a cold bottle of champagne in the wine cooler. The power of preparation is real and satisfying.
5) Deep Clean. Sponge your baseboards and cabinets. Clean inside your refrigerator and light fixtures. Vacuum underneath sofas, cushions, and chairs. This will reduce odors and please the eye.
6) Stage your space. With simple shifts your home can look like the new listings online. Bring in white linens: duvet covers, pillows, and towels. Buy a new throw and update your sofa pillows or lamps. Re-arrange your current furniture, style your bookcases, and organize inside your cabinets. A little refreshing feels relaxing.
7) Color coordinate your closets. Organization reduces stress each time you change clothes or shoes, and again when you put them away.
Bonus: Buy yourself a plant. Taking care of something provides a sense of accomplishment while boosting your confidence. If plants intimidate you, stop by Oak Street Garden Shop in Crestline where they will guide you to the appropriate plant for your environment and teach you how to care for it. With a few reminders on your phone, the plant will thrive!
These tips also apply to getting your home market-ready. Are you thinking about selling? When you list with me I am full-service broker: REALTOR® + project manager. With a list of vendors and a tried-and-true method, I will be with you every step of the way pre-listing to the closing table.

A New Year, A New Natural You
by: Dr. Paul Koch at
Some of the most important time that I spend with people is to understand their idea of a beautiful smile prior to ever touching their teeth, and discussing what it takes to achieve that. I am happy to report that the standard in Alabama is to look as good as possible while maintaining a natural, healthy, appropriately light smile that complements the rest of the face and eyes.
UNDERSTAND WHAT A PERSON LIKES, DOESN’T LIKE, AND DESIRES FOR THEIR
SMILE Many times people cannot express what they like, but almost everyone can describe what they don’t like, for instance, it may be, “My teeth are really worn down looking…”. This leads to a discussion about what we typically do to remedy that situation.
WHAT ABOUT A LESS INVASIVE WAY?
One of the most popular advances in the clear aligner approach to teeth straightening is the development of 3-D OPTICAL SCANNING, as an alternative to full mouth impressions. This technology takes multiple photos (generally around 2500) at different angles around the mouth, and stiches them together to form a three-dimensional “model” that can be used like the plaster models and impressions of old were used.
The scans are also instantly sent through the Web to the laboratory, and cuts out the time that used to be wasted on shipping back and forth. Since most of the simulations at the lab are also virtual, we no longer need to convert physical models to virtual ones, thus also shortening the time involved.
WHAT
IS YOUR MAGIC NUMBER?
The next step is to identify what the “Magic Number” of teeth that we need to treat to accomplish that goal, while being ever mindful of hiding the transition between natural teeth and the dental restorations. Most of the time, it makes sense to treat the teeth that show in a really full smile.
Many new competitors are coming into the market every week to offer straightening solutions for people at various price points. As always, do your research—many cases have complexities that require a very experienced orthodontist or dentist to avoid pitfalls which the consumer cannot appreciate until they actually run into them.
YOUR PORTRAIT
& FRAME
Another important part of the process is to focus on the white, the pink, and the red (the teeth, gums, and lips), these form the Portrait, while the rest of the face is the Frame. All artists know that the portrait should complement the frame and the frame complement the portrait. In other words, the smile design should flow naturally with the shape of the face and smiling lips, the age and gender of the patient, and their particular personality.
DESIGN A PROTOTYPE I design a “prototype” of the actual tooth set-up, keeping all of these elements in mind, and working naturally with a person’s jaws and facial muscles’ anatomy and physiology. This is literally made from scratch on a chewing simulator that is set up to act just like the patient does— this ensures that the bite looks and feels natural at all times.
In our practice, aligner technology can also help achieve the aesthetic results that people are looking for, either for the upper and lower teeth, or sometimes we elect to utilize cosmetic dentistry on the upper front teeth and just straighten and whiten the lower teeth, this saves money that doesn’t need to be spent on the lowers, since veneers tend to cost more than straightening the teeth. 3 Things To Do Now For Spring
Dr. Holly Gunn at Gunn Dermatology discusses how to be yourbest self in 2023 with these easy changes.
The colder months are upon us. Late fall has seen freezing temperatures already and winter is still to come. We’ve huddled in our houses with hot chocolate, blankets, and roasting chestnuts to enjoy the warmth inside. We meet in local watering holes to swap tales and invite friends over to make even more memories. Soon however, the warmth of spring will smile upon us. There are opportunities we can take over the next few months to prepare ourselves even more for the upcoming social season. Gunn Dermatology provides the answers for Birminghamians. Here are three of the best things to do before spring.

What stood out to me was the commitment to mentorship and service I found in the staff at the Clubs. These folks show a missional call to lift Club kids up to their highest potential and their impact can help set a positive trajectory in the life of each child.
POSITIVE TAKEAWAYS FROM 2022 BGCCA Clubs in our area were some of the first in the nation to get back running during COVID, providing incredible relief to families and kids during that time. But it has taken time to get back to full pre-COVID attendance numbers, which the staff has worked hard to do this year.

MOTIVATION
After attending my first Fairy Tale Ball when my husband was on the board of Childcare Resources, I knew this was a great organization that many were unaware of. During 2020, I realized just how important quality childcare is for working families and for their ability to have a career outside the home.
POSITIVE TAKEAWAYS FROM 2022
Childcare Resources has made a positive impact on the community as we have seen many parents return to the workforce after the pandemic. This organization has become a real voice and advocate for quality, affordable childcare in the Birmingham area and I have been blessed to have been a part of that this year.

MOTIVATION
I have had the pleasure of being involved in this foundation because my grandparents and the Reeds have been lifelong friends. My mom is also the Executive Director of the Foundation. The Reed Foundation naturally means a lot to my family and me.
POSITIVE TAKEAWAYS FROM 2022
Being involved with The Reed Foundation has allowed me to meet so many people in the Birmingham area who have a connection to GI cancer in some way. Over the last few years, I have been able to see the Reed Foundation not only raise money for GI cancer, but also help families locally who have lost loved ones. I cherish the relationships I have made through the Junior Board.

GOOD TASTE GOOD TASTE

Everything Old is New Again
Eating the same thing, drinking the same thing, doing the same thing every day isn’t just boring, it is against human nature. We are an inherently curious, exploratory, and innovative species. We sometimes try new things and decide that it wasn’t a good idea. Then again, sometimes we try new things and are delighted by the revelation.
Often times we will recommend a bottle to someone, and they will look at it with a dubious expression. “How do I know that I will like it?” Well, fact is we don’t know for sure. But we do try and listen to your preference and find new and exciting things for you to try. Come by, tell us a few of your favorites, and see if we can help you find a new and interesting bottle. Show us the old, we will show you the new.
ZINFANDEL
Caymus is one of the most famous American wineries. Their Cabernet is a staple of many a wine list. That is cool and all, but one of their secret gems has always been their Zinfandel. Sadly, the Caymus Zinfandel is nearly impossible to find, but they do have an amazing substitute – The Walking Fool This Zinfandel based blend was crafted as an homage to the original patriarch homesteader, a gentleman who loved to walk everywhere. You’ve had Zinfandels, we hope, but this new offering from Suisun Valley, just a short thirty minute drive from Napa, is the next one you should try.
CABERNET SAUVIGNON
The standard, the stalwart, the ubiquitous American red wine. Cabernet is the safe place, the default choice for so many people. Come down and try a Cabernet that might be new to you. Never tried Shannon Ridge? You should. It is an incredible value.
CHARDONNAY
Are you sitting down? Good. Because we are about to recommend a value magnum. Yup. That’s right, we are suggesting that you get a “cheap” 1.5L bottle of wine. There are a select few customers who have discovered a great Chardonnay from Washington State. This bottle punches well above its weight. Come down and grab a bottle of Stimson Lane and be amazed.
SOBRIETY
It might seem strange to read this from someone who sells alcohol for a living, but I am an advocate for sobriety. The fact is that alcohol isn’t always for everyone. Folks need to take a break now and then, and some folks need to take a permanent break. We respect those who make the decision to forgo alcohol. But don’t worry, we sell non-alcoholic beer (Near-Beer) for those who want to scratch that itch. A few of the best ones we have found include the offerings from Athletic Brewing Company, Budweiser Zero, Claustaler, Grüvi, and Heineken 0.0. Check them out if you like.
