Handling Holiday Family Stress After Divorce. >>> My ex-husband and I were married for 16-years and we have two amazing children.

We recently finalized a very contentious divorce and agreed to share custody of our children.

Not only are we still working through emotions and financial details, but I am very worried about how to handle the holidays with our children. How should I handle it?

F

irst of all, I would take a deep breath and realize that believe it or not, the worst is behind you. I know when you are involved in the process of getting divorced, that the holidays (and all the millions of those details) are not something that most people really think through in-detail.

Most people think about dates and times, but the actual execution of these events take a little more planning and most importantly a shift in YOUR expectations. It’s important for you to develop coping strategies well in advance of these major holiday events like Thanksgiving, Passover, Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s. These times can naturally intensify feelings of sadness and loss if you don’t get ahead of them. Even if your family holidays aren’t exactly the same as they have always been, the great news is we all have choices in the type “lens” we look through and especially how we portray these new and meaningful transitions to your children. Here are a couple strategies for enjoying the holidays (rather than dreading them).

- Traditions. Out with the Old and In with the New... For most of us, “traditions” are “traditions” simply because it’s what we have always done.

Many times, those things happen because we don’t sit down and think about whether they even still make sense for our families. Transitioning to a divorced family means that you can create new traditions that work for your family. No mater what your traditions were, try to accept that these have come to an end but embrace the opportunity start new ones. Have a friends “my favorite things” gift exchange, plan a kids Christmas cookie decorating contest with Facebook voting, or even schedule a spa day just for you on the day after Christmas.

Who knows? These new traditions could be your best memories.

- Accept the Schedule but Keep Sentiment.

I know it’s so hard realizing that some years you won’t spend the “actual day” of a particular holiday with your children as you share them with their other parent. While this can be upsetting, I promise that everything has a silver lining. Your kids won’t mind celebrating the holiday on a different “day”. They get to do all the fun things TWICE. If you always watch the Thanksgiving Day parade with them, record it and play it on the weekend you get them back. Make plans to have holiday celebrations in advance. Any day even close to the holiday will be perfect. Your kids will remember it the same as if you were all together on the actual day. And remember, when it’s time to send them to their other parent’s home, keep your emotions together and remind them what a great time they will have and that you are going to be just fine.

The most important thing I can tell you is to remember that the holidays tend to fly by. Before you know it, you’ll be making snow cream on a random day in January and making plans for spring break. So, despite the difficulty of your life right now, try not to wish away the holidays. Instead, embrace them for what they are: A time for feeling gratitude, celebrating loved ones, and of course, believing.

Everyone should get the flu shot. Even if you’ve never had one, it’s the most effective way of preventing contraction of the virus. It’s especially important if you’re around anyone who would be in danger if they were to contract the virus.

When traveling you can best protect yourself by maintaining social distancing guidelines, mask-wearing, washing hands and using hand sanitizer after being in any public place where you may have touched or been exposed to anything.

Where Do You Go To Meet New People?

>>> I’m not in a high risk category, but my parents or other family members are. What is the best way to handle that?

Even though you’re not at risk, being around people who are means you should treat yourself as if you’re at risk. Make sure you get a flu shot, and continue to maintain good personal hygiene with hand-washing, mask-wearing, and trying to prevent direct personal contact with any of those that may be at higher risk.

Acne is not a dirty face disease, it is a hormonal disease. But you still need to wash your face at least once a day to make sure we are not making our acne worse. Any acne wash that has either benzoyl peroxide or Salicylic acid is a good one for acne.

Our favorites are the AHA/BHA Gunn Dermatology Cleanser and Skinceuticals Simple Clean. Many times we combine these cleanser with prescriptions to make them work even better.

The two most important treatments would be a mild retinol and “not picking”. Yes, not picking is actually a treatment because picking makes acne last much longer. Our favorite retinol for teenagers is Differin, Gunn Dermatology Blemish and Age Tonic, or ISDIN Melatonik.

How frequently to wash your face?

Over-washing the face can make acne worse. We recommend washing the face once daily and using a gentle toner twice daily like ISDIN Micellar Water or Thayers Facial Toner with Witch Hazel.

Dr. Gunn uses the ugly duckling sign, and any rapid growth to find skin cancers early and save lives. Most melanomas look strange compared to other moles on the body. They grow quickly and you can see a difference in their size from one month to the next. Any odd moles deserve to be looked at by a board certified dermatologist. Most of the time we will use a photo to monitor them.

Avoiding the December Dip Reclaiming a Fit and Healthy Routine by: Leslie Dobbins

While many disciplined people channeled the stress and challenges of 2020 into impressive fitness and nutrition regiments, others found ourselves eating and drinking our feelings while we neglected our exercise intentions. Fitness expert Leslie Dobbins shares tips to turn your health around to meet 2021 with results-oriented resolutions you’ll look forward to keeping.

The real struggle during quarantine was which Netflix series to binge while the exercise equipment people ordered sat unattended in the corner. I feel the majority of people who normally exercise daily truly tried to stick to a workout regimen. However, lack of a “normal” day left people out of their routines, making it hard to stay motivated.

Throw in everyone working from home and becoming full-time educators, while simultaneously trying not to harm our significant others…it was a recipe for not a lot of alone time to exercise. Even those who didn’t experience weight gain likely lost muscle mass, motivation and sanity.

The 3 Keys - Find a Routine. The key to getting back on track is finding a routine you can maintain consistently.

Implement manageable changes one at a time to allow them to become habits and to celebrate your triumphs, no matter how small. When healthy habits are formed, positive changes will be noticed. Those outcomes become motivation that can fuel people to keep pushing for even more progress.

- Find a Friend. Get a friend or family member with common goals to join forces and help you stay motivated. Having an accountability partner is extremely helpful and can make working out much more fun. Ask that friend who makes you laugh to meet you at the gym.

- Find some Fun. Exercise does not have to be so serious. If you don’t enjoy it, you won’t do it! Not able to attend a gym? Throw a dance party in the den after dinner! One song will turn into three, and you’ll be at ten before you know it.

5 HEALTHY HABITS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

1) Set yourself up for success!

If you exercise after work, be sure to pack your gym bag the night before and put it in your car. With the days being shorter, going home to change is the kiss of death. No one wants to get back out when it’s dark and cold. Do not fall victim to the couch!

2) DO NOT wait until January 1st to start! You can start now and spare yourself the evil eye from gym regulars come the first of the year! If you plan on joining a new gym, you can beat the New Year’s resolution group and familiarize yourself with the facility so you won’t feel like the freshman on campus!

3) Plan for reality. Let’s be honest, everyone is going to eat more during the holidays. You can still work out even if you are enjoying more treats.

You might be surprised to find that extra cookie less enticing if you exercise going into the holiday season.

4) You deserve “me” time too! Speaking of cookies, moms, do not neglect your workout because you are helping with multiple class parties! As a teacher of twelve years, I can assure you the children do not care if cupcakes are store-bought over homemade.

5) Tomorrow is a new day! If today you ate badly and did not work out, you don’t have to wait until the next Monday to start over! Your body does not care if you start midweek.

Creative Design And Thoughtful Updates Bring Beauty To This Once Modest Home

When she was 19, Gadsden native Sally Davis Thrasher thought she knew what her future held. An interior design major at Auburn University, Thrasher envisioned a career designing beautiful home interiors, incorporating her artistic flair and love of fashion. But during her sophomore year, an unexpected injury abruptly changed the trajectory of her life.

“I had a freak accident and fell on my right arm. It was paralyzed with no feeling for a year and a half. I couldn’t move my hand because of extensive nerve damage. The loss of use in my dominant hand meant I couldn’t draw, which was an integral part of my major and future profession as a designer.” After countless surgeries and lots of physical therapy, Thrasher regained use of her arm and hand. She changed her major to accounting and moved to Birmingham for her first job out of college. She now works as Senior Director of Client Engagement, Government Programs for Prime Therapeutics.

Despite her career change, Thrasher’s passion for decorating did not subside. “I changed my major to something I knew I could always use in life, but my love for interior design and fashion are still there,” says Thrasher. “I get to have fun expressing myself through renovation and design in my own home.” Thrasher’s expert eye for design and attention to detail are apparent in every corner of her Mountain Brook home. “We were moving from Liberty Park,” Thrasher shares. “I knew I wanted to be in the Crestline area. When looking for a house, everything in my budget was outdated or just not me. I didn’t want to pay a premium for something that wasn’t my style. I really believe a person’s home depicts their personality.” Thrasher found a gem in a home that offered lots of potential with carefully planned cosmetic updates. She enlisted the help of contractor Josh Haralson, who was able to execute extensive renovations in six short months.

The entry is open to the light-filled living room. The area is anchored by a blush pink velvet sofa from Gadsden Lighting, re-upholstered white chairs, a cow hide rug, a marble-topped coffee table and a refinished curio cabinet that belonged to Thrasher’s grandmother.

Pops of black and gold accent the room in art, lamps and décor pieces along with pillows painted by her mother. Thrasher updated the wood-burning fireplace to gas and filled it with fire balls from Brandino Brass. An abstract black and white painting adds drama above the mantle. Walls and trim throughout the home are painted white. Thrasher had all of the home’s interior doors painted black to allow them to stand out from the white. She was very intentional about planning renovations to the home to create a better flow for entertaining and daily living.

The home’s kitchen—a true show-stopper, features a Blue Star gas range and two-door oven with four burners, a grill and griddle. “The kitchen is my absolute favorite room in the house,” Sally shares. “Blue Star is what Frank Stitt cooks on in his kitchen. I just loved the black and gold and it fit right into my vision for an elevated kitchen space.

Thrasher worked with local artist Carrie Pittman to create a custom abstract painting to hang above a distressed metal console from IO Metro in the dining room. “Carrie came to see the house and took her inspiration from my home and what I wanted. The first version was a little brighter than I wanted, so Carrie toned it down to fit my vision.”

“In the kitchen, I worked with Brandino Brass and they brought my vision to life with exquisite floating shelves. I got all the hardware, doorknobs, shelf brackets and outdoor gas lights for the house there.”

Thrasher selected brass finishes to coordinate with the range’s accents for a classic look in the kitchen.

Her carpenter built custom cabinets, panels to hide the refrigerator and dishwasher and a hood above the range. In order to break up the monochromatic color scheme, Thrasher had a section of cabinetry painted Sherwin Williams Inkwell. The kitchen also features an enviable Gaggenau built-in coffee/cappuccino/espresso maker and Bosch convection oven/microwave. “Walking into a kitchen, I didn’t want the refrigerator and dishwasher to be the focal points. My goal was to let the countertops, range and floating shelves take center stage. I have kids sitting at the bar stools frequently, so they had to be easy to wipe clean.

I love the modern, clean look of the island’s waterfall edge.” Thrasher selected Alabama White marble for the kitchen counters, backsplash and island. She was so intentional about the material that she went to a quarry in Bessemer to select the exact slab she wanted.

Home Hunting

Guests are welcomed into the home through a custom steel and glass door that Thrasher had made by Blackshop Birmingham and painted bright blue with auto paint to stand up to the Alabama sun. The walls of the entry bear a striking, abstract gold design.

A sputnik light fixture and acrylic console table topped with a painting by Windy O’Connor set the tone for the thoughtfullydecorated home. “I fell in love with a wallpaper that I wanted to use in the entry, but the price per square foot was outrageous. So, I found a freelance painter to replicate the pattern with gold paint on the white walls. It’s one of my favorite spots in the house.”

Behind the living room is a stunning dining room made for a dinner party. Thrasher had her carpenter, Sherwood Cox, build a large table with a thick wood top held up by squared bases.

The table is centered under a pair of Tiffany blue beaded chandeliers from Circa, where Thrasher purchased nearly every lighting fixture for the home. Upholstered blue chairs from West Elm lend a relaxed and inviting vibe to the space

The kitchen adjoins to the open den in a perfect entertaining space. The room is anchored by a leather sofa, a pair of white club chairs, and marbletopped tables from West Elm and IO Metro. Thrasher had her carpenter build custom shelves surrounding the fireplace that complement the kitchen cabinets. The shelves are artfully filled with hand-blown vases and books from A’Mano, an acrylic tray featuring a photo of Gray Malin’s well-known umbrellas, bookends from Chickadee and a painting by Thrasher’s mother.

The mirror-backed shelves to the left of the fireplace offer the perfect spot for a fun and vibrant bar. Thrasher collected an array of beverage glasses at favorite stores like A’Mano. “I think every house needs a bar. It’s just so fun to have a spot where guests can help themselves to a drink when you’re entertaining.”

Two bedrooms are connected by a Jack-and-Jill bath. Thrasher painted an old twin bed a deep shade of navy to coordinate with neutral furniture in her son’s room.

OTHER PAGE: “The house did not have a powder room for guests to use, so we moved a wall and made the living room smaller to make space.” The walls of the half bath are clad in a striking leopard print wallpaper. A stunning gold and glass sputnik ceiling fixture casts light that bounces off the gleaming gold and white fixtures.

“My carpenter made the dining table, the bunk beds, kitchen cabinetry, all bathroom cabinetry and the shelving in the den. His name is Sherwood Cox. He is extremely easy to work with and a super nice guy. I tell him what I want and he draws it out, then builds it. He’s very talented.”

Another sputnik light fixture crowns the master bedroom. The king-sized bed is upholstered in dark grey velvet with white linens from Restoration Hardware and pillows from Little Design Company. Jennifer Vought completely transformed Thrasher’s dark wood bedroom suit, painting the pieces a lighter color, adding new hardware and enhancing the nightstands with grass cloth.

SHE ONCE BUILT A FORT SO LARGE, THAT IT UTILIZED EVERY BLANKET, TOWEL, AND CHAIR IN THE WHOLE HOUSE.

The master bath is filled with grey and white marble from floor to ceiling and includes a soaking tub and double shower. Thrasher loves the hexagons repeated on the mosaic-tiled floor that perfectly coordinate with the black, white and gold color scheme of the space.

Thrasher says the home turned out exactly as she envisioned and she loves the private lot they found in the popular neighborhood.

“Living in Crestline makes me so happy. I love the schools, the convenience, the community and neighborhood feel. It’s like Mayberry. I can walk my son to school. You don’t get to do that many places!”

“Birmingham is my home and I am committed to supporting the organizations and the initiatives that make our community strong,” Lee Ann shares. “It is a privilege to work for a bank and to be part of service-minded organizations that see the value of investing financial resources and providing volunteer support to impact lives throughout our community.”

“Lee Ann is a true champion for our community,” says Amy Jackson, JLB President-Elect. “Her commitment to Birmingham spans numerous organizations, representing a life of service and leadership. There are not enough words to represent the ripple effect of Lee Ann’s service and leadership in Birmingham.”

For the past 9 years, Lee Ann has given countless hours of dedicated service and leadership to the JLB in various leadership roles, inspiring those she serves alongside every step of the way. This year, she is leading the JLB and its more than 40 projects as Community Vice President. Lee Ann works at Regions Bank as Vice President and Volunteer Services Coordinator. She was part of the 2018-2019 class of Leadership Alabama and recognized in 2016 in Birmingham Business Journal’s “Top 40 Under 40.” In 2014, she received the Regions Better Life Award, the top honor given to a Regions associate for outstanding dedication and job performance as well as exemplary involvement and commitment to the community.

“Lee Ann is an incredible asset to Regions,” says Marta Self, Regions Bank Head of Corporate Philanthropy & Executive Director of the Regions Foundation. “She connects our associates, many times whole teams, to opportunities to serve the community. Opportunities that you or I would not even know are there. Much of Lee Ann’s time outside of work revolves around opportunities to serve the community. Currently she serves on the board of the Firehouse Shelter, the Advisory Board for the Alabama Governor’s School, as Roundtable Past President for the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama, on the Finance Committee for Dawson Memorial Baptist Church, and as Junior League of Birmingham (JLB) Community Vice President.

MOTIVATION There is absolutely no hiding the fact that my favorite part about my job with Tito’s Handmade Vodka is building relationships with many incredible nonprofits all over Alabama that are making such a positive impact on so many lives daily. I’ve always had a soft spot for animals, so when I learned about how Hand in Paw’s Animal-Assisted Therapy Program was improving so many individuals’ lives and overall well-being, I gravitated towards helping raise awareness and funding almost immediately.

WHAT I GAINED FROM 2020 I’ve been able to spend more quality time with my husband and our dogs and we’ve both been forced to learn how to cook better, which has both been much needed and fun at the same time.

Also, this year has taught me to not compare my life to other’s highlight reels on social media, to be more grateful for the things I have, and to not take anything for granted as life’s too short and nothing is promised.

MOTIVATION I had a friend and mentor at work who helped me through a difficult time in my personal life. Later, he was diagnosed with cancer and eventually lost his battle. Just after his memorial, our company was contacted about an opening on the American Cancer Society’s Central Alabama Board of Directors and I volunteered.

WHAT I GAINED FROM 2020 Our organization raises money primarily through live events.

When the pademic hit, our board members and staff partners immediately started working on alternatives to continue our mission in a challenging environment. The results exceeded our expectations. What struck me is how fortunate we are to have a diverse, creative, resourceful, and generous group of community leaders on our board of directors.

Businesses had to rethink how they provide a safe environment for their employees while continuing to serve their clients.
