THE 5 BEST REASONS TO DO YOGA Claiming a Fit and Healthy Routine

ADVENTURES IN

DIETING

by: Megan Underwood (self described Diet Addict)

by: Whitney Renfroe

Whether you’re a seasoned yogi, only popped into a few classes here or there, or haven’t tried it out just yet, there is no denying that yoga has picked up a lot of steam in Western culture. Most people are drawn to the physical fitness aspect of yoga, but are hooked by the mental, emotional, and spiritual elements they discover. While the benefits of yoga are truly countless, here are five major ones. #1. STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY With consistent practice, the body is continuously challenged and over time grows stronger and less resistant. Muscle tone improves, capacity to support one’s body weight increases, endurance improves, joints move better, and muscles become more flexible.

#2. DETOXIFICATION Yoga offers many postures which create different types of twist or compression against the organs. These serve to help detoxify. Imagine ringing out a damp, dirty towel over the sink, rinsing it off, and wringing it out again. This is what we are doing for our bodies in yoga. We twist and compress to release lingering gunk and buildup in the form of toxins, and each breath of fresh oxygen is like the rinse of clean water.

#4. BALANCE We all want to feel balanced on our own two feet (or, if you develop a very advanced practice, even your head or your hands!). Yoga is wonderful for developing a better sense of stability, strength, and control. There are a variety of postures that train balance, from simply standing with the feet closer together than is natural, to standing on one foot while the other leg plays in different positions. With each repetition, the brain learns to communicate more effectively with our base of support. This leads to more comfort and ease as we stand, walk, jog, or dance!

#5. BREATH CONTROL Control of the breath is one of the most transferrable skills that yoga helps a person cultivate. Learning to focus and manipulate the breath in the midst of physical discomfort trains us to remain calm and grounded even when our environment is provoking stress or anxiety. Also, the breathwork practice in yoga (pranayama) increases our breath capacity and CO2 tolerance. This gives us more efficient inhalations and exhalations, which allows our bodies to function at a higher level.

#3. SPINE HEALTH Yoga helps increase range of motion throughout the body, and the spine, which extends from the very base of the tail to the back of the skull, is no exception. Certain postures and sequences are designed to lengthen the spine and make it more flexible, while others are designed to create twist and rotation along the vertebral column. Furthermore, the tissues that surround the backbone grow stronger and provide more support. Consistency over time ensures stronger, healthier backs.

DIETING ON THE GO The busyness of the summer can blow-up the best intended diet schedule. In the wild onthe-go days of summer, things can get dicey. Adherence and success requires preparation, planning, intention, and a bit of grace. As someone who is following a carnivore diet (sticking only to meat products and occasionally nuts), my guidelines are as tough as it gets. But I have a stack of diet-life hacks to help me stay on track in the trickiest situations: > Road Tripping The literal worst is to find myself hangry in the middle of nowhere, with no exit in sight. A close second-worst is to find myself hangry in the middle of the Korner Quik Mart without a clue. I’ve learned to keep a few diet-friendly snacks with me at all times, including a travel-sized container of my favorite collagen-based protein— just add water. Luckily every filling station provides a selection of various jerkies and nuts. My husband includes dairy in his diet and grabs a string cheese and an individual serving-sized milk. I always check labels and avoid added sugars and artificial sweeteners. Disasters averted. > Eating Out The most vital key to beating the restaurant game is preparation. I have to be pretty picky, and have become a pro at finding restaurants that will best serve my needs. I make sure to scope out the menu for options ahead of time, specifically looking for steamed and grilled meats as “add-ons” or sides. I’ve discovered the most effective approach is to inform the server of my specific dietary restrictions before ordering. > Vacationing A night or more in a hotel is no big deal when I play the hand I’m dealt. Upon arrival, I find the nearest grocery store and stock up on easy protein-rich snacks - lunch meat, packaged tuna or salmon, cheese, boiled eggs. Throw in some nuts and pre-cooked protein options like rotisserie chicken or steamed shrimp. I take full advantage of a complimentary breakfast by building a plate with the available protein options. > Socializing I follow a few guidelines and give myself all the grace: have a high protein meal before leaving home; take a protein-rich snack for when those cravings hit; drink smart. Alcohol is usually not the enemy, sugar is. I stick to tequila or vodka mixed with soda water, an occasional extra brut champagne, and lots of water in between. I remind myself to relax and live - a night (or even several) will not derail my daily consistency and hard work. It’s also super important to not be a jerk. Ultimately, I’ve found there is no scenario or situation that can derail my diet if I follow some basic ground rules and loosen my grip from time to time. With preparation on the front end, I am able to win the diet game wherever I find myself.

Self–care isn’t selfish. Immerse in a restorative setting of self-care with personalized treatment for exceptional skin health. Because healthy is a feeling we should all indulge.

Physiq Provides an Easy Summer Body Answer We take a closer look with the experts at Gunn Dermatology.

Everyone wants to feel good about their body, but we don’t necessarily want to do anything too drastic to alter the parts of us we do love. At the same time, thousands of obstacles seem to occur each day that prevent us from working on achieving the perfect body we desire. This is on the mind more than ever as summer is arriving and we head for the beaches, lakes, and swimming pools. Fortunately for us it is the year 2022 and there are fast, stress-free solutions like Phsiq that make it easy to take our body to the next level. This unique treatment option combines heat and energy to tighten skin and tone muscles while reducing fat in the body. We take a closer look with Gunn Dermatology

This easy solution only requires 30 minutes to 3 hours per session, depending on the number of treatment areas chosen to be worked on. The initial series recommendation is 5 treatments every two weeks. This is a painless process that doesn’t require any downtime, and there isn’t any recovery time required to heal after. Results are seen immediately and provide a long-lasting solution. This is the perfect for those looking for an extra body boost before hitting getting outside to enjoy the summer weather. Physiq is the only device in the United States to utilize STEP (Sequential Thermal & Electrical Pulse) technology. This means that both EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) and a Superluminescent Diode Matrix (SDM) laser to build the user’s muscles up. While that may sound complicated, it is a super easy experience that translates to a comfortable and very simple process for those who select this treatment option. Physiq can be used to target practically any area on the body. Abs, arms, legs, inner and outer thighs, banana rolls, buttocks, and flanks are all popular options.

Before

After 5 Sessions

WHAT IS PHYSIQ? PHYSIQ is a muscle building, fat-reducing, and skin tightening device. PHYSIQ body contouring uses a combination of heat and energy to reduce fat, tighten skin and tone muscle, and get your body to that “next level.” PHYSIQ targets problem areas for optimal, natural-looking results with NO DOWNTIME.

Physiq is open to anyone who wants to feel and look stronger, and often brings a rejuvenated feeling in the body immediately following treatment. In addition to making us look better, it stimulates the body and makes us feel like we just completed a dedicated workout. Let’s make this summer our best summer!

For more information about any of these treatments, contact Dr. Holly Gunn at Gunn Dermatology for a consultation: 32 Church St, Mountain Brook 205-415-7536.

Are Porcelain Veneers Right For You? by: Dr. Paul Koch at Koch Aesthetic Dentistry

Dr. Koch patient- Deanna Pizitz

This aesthetic solution can solve many dental concerns.

Many of us who’ve wished for a better smile, but feel the options presented to us to improve our teeth seem daunting. We only have one mouth and we want to do everything in our power to protect what we got. Fortunately, there are many different non-surgical options that allow us to feel better about ourselves and feel safe while doing so. Porcelain veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic dentistry options, and it’s easy to see why. The process is quick and is matched perfectly with the existing teeth in a patient’s mouth. But who all is this wonderful solution available to? We take a closer look with Birmingham’s own Koch Aesthetic Dentistry here.

Koch Aesthetics offers FREE VIRTUAL CONSULTATIONS. And initial consultations can done via video. Simply visit kochaesthetics.com and click FREE VIRTUAL CONSULT in the upper right corner.

If you have any questions for Dr. Koch, please visit kochaesthetics.com or call (205) 933.0323.

WHO ARE PORCELAIN VENEERS MEANT FOR? Porcelain veneers are a minimally invasive aesthetic dental solution that visually corrects crooked teeth, repairs chipped teeth, and restores worn and discolored teeth. Since the correction process is so simple, it is one of most common aesthetic procedures found today. These tooth-colored shells require minimal prep for most patients, and provide a very stressfree approach to altering your smile. If you have a bothersome tooth gap or are concerned about staining, porcelain veneers are very likely the solution to your concerns. In short, they are a sensible option for the majority of interested parties. Another benefit to this procedure is the impressive amount of time that porcelain veneers remain effective. With proper care, most veneer solutions last up to 25 years! They are durable and hard to stain, but also easy to provide maintenance for if anything does occur. Porcelain veneers are working to protect your smile in addition to enhancing it, which is a pretty ideal scenario. Of course, the best way to find out if veneers are meant for you is to contact a dental professional. A smile says a lot about an individual, and each already tells a wonderful story. But for those who are thinking about enhancing their image, porcelain veneers are one of the most common sense dental solutions available! Keep on smiling, Birmingham

10 Best Movie Sequels of All Time By Sidewalk Film Center & Cinema Creative Director, Rachel Morgan & Lead Programmer, Corey Craft

S

equels are tough. They’re the sophomore album of the movie game, but there are always a few that pull themselves from the long list of shark jumpers to rival their namesake. Here’s our current, list of most excellent movie sequels of all time. For more movie lists and antics with Rachel & Corey check out the official Sidewalk Podcast, SIDETALKS, via Soundcloud or wherever you get your podcasts.

10. BEFORE SUNSET (2004) Richard Linklater When we left Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy’s wistful 20-somethings at the end of 1995’s Before Sunrise, they had made plans to meet again and pursue their whirlwind romance. When we catch up with them nine years later in its unlikely sequel, the two are more worldly, complicated and weighed by the ramifications of their decisions. In total, Linklater’s three “Before” films are among the best depictions of messy modern romance in all its contradictions; this is the best one. – COREY

9. THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION PART II: THE METAL YEARS (1988) Penelope Spheeris

To be fair, it’s more of a continuation than a sequel, but Part II is right there in the title and the opportunity to include this film on a list can’t be resisted. The Metal Years chronicles the heavy metal scene in Los Angeles between 1987 and 1988 and features an ocean of amazing, stylish interviews. The documentary opens with fog machine intensity, screaming fans, power chords and Paul Stanley being interviewed while lying in bed with 4 women. It’s uphill from there. – RACHEL

8. SPIDERMAN 2 (2004) Sam Raimi Long before the current multiversal glut of Marvel superhero entertainment — and long before they all felt obligatory and increasingly artless — Sam Raimi made a big, bold, earnest and exciting sequel to his 2002 smash-hit webslinging adventure. Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker struggles with life, love and a psychotic scientist who has accidentally grafted tentacles to his spine. It set the bar that all future Spider-Men — and most other superhero films, for that matter — have struggled to clear. – COREY

7. TEXASVILLE (1990) Peter Bogdanovich

This one makes the list mostly because you’re not going to find it on any list, anywhere, ever. While it doesn’t come anywhere near the mastery of its origin film, The Last Picture Show, it’s a lot of fun (and sometimes not-so-fun) to see where Duane, Jacy and Sunny ended up… in full color. Plus, it’s late 80s’ Texas with its hot tubs, McMansions, oil rigs, wordy t-shirts and middle-of-nowhere Dairy Queen. The MVP isn’t actually a returning cast member (though it’s an amazing cast), but the super-fun-to-watch Annie Potts. – COREY

6. NYMPHOMANIAC: VOL II (2013) Lars von Trier It’s no Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2…Nympho 2 is the second and final chapter of its series, but the third and last installment of von Trier’s (unofficially titled) “Depression Trilogy” (following Antichrist and Melancholia). As is typical of von Trier, the film is highly provocative, frequently gross and thoroughly unpleasant. It’s also brilliant and ingenious. Warning: the trailer and even the poster are NSFW. Note: Corey does not stand behind this choice.– RACHEL MORGAN

Presented by SIDEWALK 3. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980) Irvin Kershner How do you follow up one of the biggest movies of all time? You split up your heroes, run them through the ringer, throw in one shocking twist, and introduce more new characters and worlds than you can fill a 1980s toybox with. The Empire Strikes Back not only lives up to 1977’s original Star Wars, most would agree it surpasses it, with one vividly realized, visually spectacular set piece after another. – COREY

2. GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH (1990) Joe Dante Perhaps the wildest film on this list, Gremlins 2 is ridiculous, juvenile, unapologetically silly and not to be missed! According to Rotten Tomatoes reviewer, Mark H, the film is “one of the worst movies ever made” and anonymous calls it, “so freakin’ stupid.” Required viewing! – RACHEL

1. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (2015) George Miller

5. THE GODFATHER PART II (1974) Francis Ford Coppola Every best-sequels-of-all-time list is obligated to feature The Godfather Part II because the truth is, it’s just that good and worthy of inclusion. Francis Ford Coppola deepened the saga of the Corleone family by jumping back in time to show up the development of young Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) from penniless immigrant to crime boss, while jumping forward to show how his son Michael (Al Pacino) gained the world — but lost his soul. A masterpiece. – COREY

4. SCREAM 2 (1997) Wes Craven

Perhaps the most meta of the very meta series, two students are murdered by a copycat killer at a sneak preview screening of “Stab,” a movie based on the events from the first film. Clever, inventive and the origin of “sequels suck” jokes in sequels. Plus, it’s really, really fun. – RACHEL ABOUT

72 T O W N

Landing at #1 on the list not just because it’s a great darn sequel, but because it’s the only film that can be found on BOTH Rachel and Corey’s lists! Nearly 20 years after “Mad Max” Rockatinsky faced off against Tina Turner in the Thunderdome, George Miller returned to his dystopian sci-fi action franchise with its wildest, most spectacular entry. Tom Hardy plays the title character in this stunt-heavy chase movie for the ages, loaded with “how’d they do that” stunts and an all-time great heroine in Charlize Theron’s Furiosa. – COREY (AND RACHEL)

GOOD TASTE

PROMOTION

By: Scott Atkinson, Wine Manager at PIGGLY WIGGLY IN CRESTLINE

Thanks For Making This So Much Fun. Let’s be honest. It is, sometimes, hard to be taken seriously with the name “Piggly Wiggly.” It is always entertaining when we have winery representatives, from all over the world, come in and look at our stores. They are amazed that a group of six grocery stores in Lil’ Ol’ Alabama are so dialed in to the world of fine wine.

We at the Piggly Wiggly are also very honored that you chose us as the best wine shop around. Our peers are pretty dang good, so to be selected as the Best of the Best is a strong compliment. And not only do we not take it lightly, but we will not rest on our laurels. We will try even harder to maintain our place as number one. Thanks for selecting us five years in a row!

Not to put too fine a point on it, but we are only the best wine shop because you want us to be. We push ourselves to give you what you want. Thanks for making that fun. Not only are we honored that you, the readers, take us seriously.

Piggly Wiggly might be the best wine shops that the rest of the world has never heard of, but you know who we are. We have selected four wines that are just like us. These are four of the best wines you’ve never heard of. Well, maybe you have, but you are one of the cool kids.

LANSON CHAMPAGNE

OSTRO PROSECCO

Real celebrations deserve real Champagne. This Champagne, which has earned the Royal Warrant of HRH Queen Elizabeth II, has been around since 1760. Not a bad run. Oh, and the Champagne is delicious. Why pay an additional twenty dollars, or more, for a Champagne that is more marketing than substance? This Champagne is an elegant balance of maturity and verve, depth and acidity, as well as bright fruits and rich brioche. There is no better value in Champagne.

Prosecco needs to be fresh, easy, and not too sweet. Other Prosecco labels, which we won’t mention here, have more than FOUR TIMES THE SUGAR of this Ostro. This is an Italian’s Prosecco. Just like a great pair of shoes makes an outfit, a well-crafted Prosecco can make a sunset. Again, you may have never seen this one before, but it has the lift, elegance, and balance that other Proseccos (or Prosecchi if you want to get real Italian) can only dream about. LUCKY ROCK PINOT NOIR

KUMEU VILLAGE CHARDONNAY

We cannot sing the praises of this wine enough. If there was ever a wine that epitomizes, “If the rest of the world knew about this, we would never see it in Alabama,” this is it. We believe that only about 1,200 cases come into the country. We got on this early-ish, so we get more at the Pigs then most states do. This Chardonnay, crafted by first Master of Wines (think of Master of Wine as a member of faculty at an Ivy League School, these folks know their stuff) in the Southern Hemisphere, Michael Brajkovich. Simply put, one of the best wines for the money we’ve yet found. ABOUT

Pinot Noir can still be a good value. They only made about 3,000 cases of this wine, so it is a bit of a shock that we see it in Alabama. But this is a Pinot Noir that has the brightness, acidity, and freshness that some of the more mass-produced Pinot Noirs cannot aspire to bottle. Put a light chill on this guy, ignore the fact that the rattlesnake on the label has no rattle, and drink a Pinot Noir in the style of the old times… before they were overwrought and too fruity. 78 T O W N
