Style Guide by
Looks & Merit Destroyed Denim and Statement Sleeves
DL1961 Hepburn High-rise Wide Leg
Rag & Bone/JEAN Dre Capri Jean
Despite the super destroyed hem, all you can notice about these jeans is how flattering they are. I’ve styled them with a button-down and blazer to dress them up and also paired them with my favorite t-shirt, but I always prefer wearing them with heels because of the wider leg.
6 TIPS FOR WEARING
DESTROYED DENIM
If you’re wanting to ease into the destroyed denim trend, then look no further than this pair. The light wash is fresh for spring and I love the step hem and distressed (but not completely bare) knees. Plus, Rag & Bone just knows what they’re doing when it comes to denim.
1) Look at denim as more of an investment piece… fit and fabric is everything here. In the case of denim, be wary of the fit and quality from fast fashion brands.
AG The Phoebe 17 Years Time Lapse Mended The high rise, unusual wash, lightly frayed step hem, and varied distressing on these straight-leg jeans are an altogether amazing combination. Obsessed.
2) Back pocket placement is a make or break situation. Don’t settle for a pair with bad pocket placement (i.e. pockets that are too far apart).
3) Mom jeans with little to no stretch are back. Embrace it.
ABOUT
8 TOWN
Rivet & Thread for Madewell Retro Straight Jeans If you’ve been looking for a pair of go-to weekend jeans, this pair is for you. They look great styled with sneakers, sandals, and perforated booties and basically any range of tops. Pair them with a girly statement sleeve and strappy sandals or tassel loafers and you’ve got a perfect street-style look.
4) Let your lifestyle guide your destroyed denim purchase. Ask yourself when and where are you wearing jeans, and which style would fill a gap in your denim repertoire?
5) If you’re looking at a rise higher than 8”, I recommend ordering one size down. Know your waist and hip measurements and let that be your guide.
Paige Miki Ankle Straight Jeans w Distressed Hem
These are an easy take on destroyed denim. The uneven hem and ripped knees are understated details and the dark wash keeps them sophisticated. There’s basically nothing you can’t wear with this cersatile pair.
6) STOP over washing your denim. You’re ruining them. Extend the time in between washes as long as possible. And, if you have a pair that has to be washed after every wear because they’ve stretched out, you need a new go-to brand like DL1961, stat.

Zara Top with Full Sleeves
This wrap-tie version is one of my favorites of the group. You get the voluminous sleeve but a figure flattering, waist-cinching effect with the tie, which you can adjust based on what you’re styling this with.
Petersyn Astor Blouse
Storets Emilie Stripe Blouse (top)
I can’t get enough of this top, and it’s definitely a balanced look with only one sleeve. Pair it with high-waisted skinnies and beachy, undone hair and you have a very fashion-forward look.
Tie-sleeve tops are a lovely take on statement sleeves that can be worn with just about anything and this striped, one-shoulder version is perfect for Spring. The styling possibilities here are endless.
H&M V-Neck Blouse
This version is perfect for the office with its subtle statement sleeve, but it definitely still gives you a little something extra. Pair it with a leather miniskirt for an evening out.
Zara Poplin w/ Pleated Sleeves (bottom) This wrap-tie version is one of my favorites of the group. You get the voluminous sleeve but a figure flattering, waist-cinching effect with the tie, which you can adjust based on what you’re styling this with.
6 TIPS FOR WEARING
1) Keep your jewelry simple and let the sleeves do the talking.
2) Add a bright mini bag for a modern look.
3) The bigger the sleeve, the more fitted you should go with your bottoms – keep the proportions right!
STATEMENT SLEEVES ABOUT
9 TOWN
4) Don’t be afraid to style them for work. Tie sleeves look phenomenal peeking out under a blazer.
5) Opt for styles with manageable price tags, that way you aren’t sobbing all the way to the consignment store when they’ve lost their luster next year.
6) Leave the top untucked and add a belt to cinch in the waist and instantly add more interest.

ASK AN EXPERT
There has been so little inventory for a while now. There seems to always be more listings come Spring, but are you forecasting fewer listings than usual over the coming months? “I think we will see the typical influx in listings this spring/summer just like in prior years, however, we should expect that demand will likely be higher than our supply can keep up with, especially in the most desirable areas. This makes it even more important to work with a local realtor in such a competitive market.”

“No one works harder than Kathy Filyaw to sell your home.”
When it came time for sisters Cathy Jackson, Vickie Snider and & Deborah Mantooth to sell their mother’s home, they enlisted the help of Realtor Kathy Filyaw with ARC Realty. “When my own house was on the market, Kathy brought a customer to an open house and they wound up buying my home,” says Cathy. “Throughout the process, I saw how hard Kathy works to attend to details and keep the process moving. When my sisters and I needed to sell our mother’s home, it was an easy decision to list with Kathy. I would recommend her to anyone.” Helping customers buy and sell a home is work Kathy Filyaw truly enjoys. “I take great satisfaction in making the process fun for my clients,” says Kathy. “Being a part of the ARC Realty team is fun or me, too.” To learn more about working with Kathy and to see all of ARC Realty’s listing, visit www.arcrealtyco.com.

Nutritional Guidance
Am I Allowed to Ever Have a Cheat Meal? Eating THE BEST in a Healthy Way As a dietitian, I get this question constantly. And the answer is yes! Do I enjoy a good Fon Fon burger every now and then? Of course! But I do so mindfully. Here are some good dining out tips that will allow you to enjoy all the delicious food Birmingham has to offer without totally derailing your diet plans:
1
Save Special Meals for Special Occasions
There is no need to over indulge in food and drink every time you go out to eat. The pizza at your favorite local pizzeria isn’t going anywhere, so stop eating like it is the last time you’ll ever taste it. Instead, allow yourself to go to your “special” places only on holidays or for a celebration. Or, have 1-2 slices of pizza and take the rest home.
3 4
Skip the Bread, order an Appetizer Instead
It’s a good rhyme to remember. Most restaurants have a lean appetizer or salad you can enjoy that will keep you out of the bread basket. For example, shrimp cocktail, tuna tartar, garden salad with vinaigrette, raw oysters, ceviche, guacamole with crudités, etc. Now don’t get me wrong. I love the corn muffins at Highlands and the crostini with bruschetta at Ocean. In fact, they probably run low in quantity after I leave. However, once again, that bread is not going away anytime soon, so there is no need to eat like it is my last meal. And you shouldn’t either.
2
Abby Nevins is a local dietitian that offers concierge nutrition consultations. As a registered dietitian, Abby hopes to not only help people lose their weight, but also help them to achieve a new and improved lifestyle that includes good nutrition, exercise, and a positive sense of health and well-being. Her mission is to change you from the inside out, so you can live your life to its fullest. You can learn more at www.bhamdietitian.com or by emailing Abby at abby@bhamdietitian.com.
Delay the Drink
Wait to order your drink until you order your entree. Sit down, enjoy the company at the table and order a salad. If you get to the restaurant and have two cocktails prior to even sitting down, that bread basket all of a sudden becomes very enticing! This brings me to my next point...
Cut Down on Portion Size
Share your entrees and order a side of vegetables for yourself. Or, at least share your dessert! A typical dessert at a restaurant can be the equivalent in calories to four glasses of wine!
Load up on Vegetables
6
Starting with a salad, broth based soup, or crudités, gets you going on the right path. Then, at dinner, order double vegetables as your side instead of creamed potatoes or mac and cheese that come with the meal. Most restaurants have roasted vegetables as an option. This could also look like getting stewed okra and tomatoes instead of fried okra at Niki’s West. (Keep those fried foods for rare occasions). ABOUT
12 T O W N
Sauces Stay on the Side
5
If you think you are doing good by ordering the fish, but it comes smothered in a white wine butter sauce, you would have been better off ordering a grilled petit filet. Ask for your meats grilled or broiled and for the sauce to come on the side. This goes for salad dressings and barbecue sauces too. This allows you to be in complete control of how much you actually consume.

How Long is Too Long To Date My Boyfriend? I’ve been dating a great guy for almost a year. I’m over 30 and want to marry him. Although he tells me he loves me, he never discusses marriage. I’ve tried to bring it up, but don’t have the nerve to be too pushy. How do I figure out if he’ll ever ask me or if I should just move on? >>>
Honesty and expression of needs is, or should be, the foundation of a lasting relationship. It may be difficult, but it sounds like it might be time to sit down and address the direction of your relationship. Maybe he has his own fears of progressing the relationship, or maybe he has no desire to ever get married. The only way to know that you aren’t wasting time is to have a “real” conversation with him. Relationships include some hard work and are going to also include many difficult conversations. Consider it practice for marriage. If he can’t handle this conversation, maybe that provides you with some quality insight about how communication will be in your marriage. Best case scenario, he opens up and talks to you about his thoughts regarding the future of the relationship, and you guys move on to the next step. You need to ask yourself; “How much time am I willing to give to someone that might not be in this for the long haul?”.
photo: Erica Kay Photography
It is my experience that men prefer for women not to give hints. Just approach the topic in a “direct” way and not a “pushy” way. >>> My in-laws frequently compare my children to my niece and nephew. How can I talk to them and let them know that my children recognize that they are being treated differently than their cousins?
Take a step back and evaluate whether you are being overly sensitive to the situation. If your nieces and nephews are the children of your husband’s sister, the relationship might be different, due to your in-laws relationship with their daughter. Daughter’s tend to spend more time with their parents. Think about the time those children are spending with your inlaws versus the time your children spend with them. If your children are actually expressing that they are affected by this difference in treatment, you should consider talking to your husband about it first. In most cases, I would recommend that the actual child of the in-laws be the one to address something this sensitive, due to the potential for them to become defensive, hurt, or shocked by the allegations. ABOUT
14 T O W N
Hopefully, he will see the need for the children’s feelings to be addressed. If he does not, you might consider a nice lunch with your inlaws, and let them know of your concerns in a gentle manner and tone. They may not realize they are showing a difference, and jumping to assumptions can create an uncomfortable situation in the family that might be unnecessary. Remember, they continue to be your in-laws even when this discussion is over. You want to continue to have a good relationship with them for the sake of all of those birthdays and holidays you will still share. If you’d like to ask an anonymous question to Dr. Misty, please email it to: info@abouttownsite.com

The “Lucky 7” workout is becoming a fast favorite of mine for so many reasons; it’s versatile, quick, incorporates strength and cardio, and just plain fun! I call it Lucky 7 because you take 7 exercises, 7 repetitions, for 7 rounds (or sets). The key to the Lucky 7 workout is to keep moving, only taking about a minute rest between rounds. This total-body killer should only take 30-45 minutes and is great for getting ready for the beach or a take-along workout while you travel. Be sure to tag AboutTown in all your workouts!

Working with Jason was like working with family. We looked at house after house and he was able to guide us away from bad things we would have never realized on our own and helped to steer us to exactly where we needed to be. We love our new house, but what’s more is that every day when we wake up we can honestly say we’ve never felt more at home. -Hicks, Past Client

Bham 14Best OFofALABAMA’S BIGGEST MUSICAL ICONS Best of Bham When you can claim the father of the blues, the biggest country star ever, and the man who produced the first rock n’ roll records, it’s safe to say, Alabama can claim a rich musical history. Here’s our partial list of Alabama’s greatest music icons. To see the complete list, visit abouttown.io.
W.C. Handy
1
If you can claim to be the Father of the Blues, you can pretty much claim to be the father of modern music. Reared by a no-nonsense discipled family in Florence, Handy was well educated and teacher by trade, until his love of music was too much to resist. It was his travels through the South and parts of the mid-West where he was influenced by African Americanfolk music, which he would evolve into the blues. Through Clarksville, Mississippi, he settled in Memphis and became a hit as he helped create the legend that would become Beale Street. In 1909, he wrote a campaign song for local politician Boss Crump. From this, he reworked it into “Memphis Blues” which became a huge hit and its structure would be the foundation of what would become the blues. While a commercial hit, he was taken advantage of and lost out on the publishing rights. He learned from this experience, and set up his own publishing business to retain ownership of his songs, which would include milestones like St. Louis Blues, Yellow Dog Blues and Beale Street Blues. Handy lived to experience his works performed by the popular jazz greats that would follow him. More than 20,000 people attended his funeral at a church in Harlem, and thousands more lined the streets to pay their respects.
Jimmie Rodgers
6
According to tradition, Rodgers’ birthplace is usually listed as Meridian, Mississippi; however, in documents signed by Rodgers later in life, his birthplace was listed as Geiger, Alabama, the home of his paternal grandparents. Regardless, his childhood was split on the Alabama/ Mississippi line with various relatives. Released in the late 20s, “Blue Yodel No. 9” sold roughly 500,000 copies (a huge number then). It was selected as one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that shaped Rock and Roll. In 1961, when the Country Music Hall of Fame was established, Rodgers was one of the first three to be inducted. Known for his yodeling, he was one of the first country superstars, and is remembered as the Father of Country Music.
Hank Williams
2
A musical super star before there was such a thing. He not only helped invent country music, he laid down the mold that generations would follow. He was born in Butler County, Alabama to scaps, and wrote some of the most iconic songs in all of popular music. Easily one of the greatest songwriters of all time, he was covered by all sorts of singers from Ray Charles, Bob Dylan to Tony Bennett. His themes of drinking and being wronged by a woman would dominate country music. His substance-abused life, and dying young (29) of an over dose in the back of his long white cadillac, has only added to his legend, and set a trend that many popular artists would follow for generations. Like all Southerners, he learned his music from two places- the church choir and black, street music. As great of an indicator as any of his influence, check out all of his covers on coversproject.com.
Alabama
7
Simply put: Alabama has sold a ton of records. The band has over 30 number one country records on the Billboard charts to their credit, and have sold over 75 million records, making them one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time. AllMusic credited the band with popularizing the idea of a country band, and wrote that “it’s unlikely that any other country group will be able to surpass the success of Alabama.” Alabama’s blend of traditional country and Southern rock lead to huge success in the 1980s.
Big Mama Thornton
Nat King Cole
3
It’s hard for younger generations to understand how big Nat King Cole was. A true celebrity, he looked as smooth as he sounded. Cole was one of the first African Americans to host a national television variety show, and was huge internationally. Cole’s first mainstream hit was his 1943 recording of one of his compositions, “Straighten Up and Fly Right”, based on a black folk tale that his father had used as a theme for a sermon. Johnny Mercer invited him to record it for his fledgling Capitol Records. It sold over 500,000 copies, proving that folk-based material could appeal to a wide audience. Cole would never be considered a rocker, but the song can be seen as anticipating the first rock-and-roll records. Bo Diddley, who performed similar transformations of folk material, counted Cole as an influence. Cole’s success at Capitol Records, for which he recorded more than 150 singles that reached the Billboard Pop, R&B, and Country charts, has yet to be matched by any Capitol artist. His records sold 50 million copies during his career. He’s an ultimate crooner. His sales saved Capitol Records.
Dinah Washington
8
Born Ruth Lee Jones in Tuscaloosa, Washington has been cited as “the most popular black female recording artist of the 50s”. Her many other titles include Queen of the Blues, Queen of the Jukebox and Queen of Jam Sessions. Recognized mainly as a jazz singer, she crossed genres, always with her roots in gospel. Along with her legendary voice, she was a great piano player and even directed her church choir in her teens.
11
Before Lou Reed, David Bowie and The New York Dolls began to revolutionize popular music by pushing a transgender, androgynous persona in the early 70s, Thornton had already been-there-done-that two decades earlier. Openly gay, Thornton was known to wear men’s outfits in her stage shows and performed risqué songs. A true pioneer of Rock-nRoll, she was the first to record Leiber and Stoller’s “Hound Dog”, in 1952, which became her biggest hit, staying seven weeks at number one on the Billboard R&B chart in 1953, and selling almost two million copies. It was unfortunately over shadowed by Elvis’s performance a couple of years later.

The founder and owner of Sun Studios in Memphis, Phillips undoubtedly helped launch Rock-N-Roll. It’s said that Phillips stated, ‘If I could find a white man who had the Negro sound and the Negro feel, I could make a billion dollars.’ It was July 5, 1954 when a unknown nineteen year old truck driver named Elvis, came into Phillip’s studio to record Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup’s “That’s All Right”. Popular music, as we know it, was invented on that day. Beginning his career in Muscle Shoals as a sound engineer and DJ, Phillips clearly had an eye for talent. Elvis Presley, Rufus Thomas, Little Milton, Bobby Blue Bland, B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash all made some of their first recordings at his studio. Interestingly, Phillips considered Howlin’ Wolf his greatest discovery, and Elvis Presley his second greatest. Rick Hall
9
If you never have, check-out the 2013 documentary, Muscle Shoals. It does a great job of explaining how such a little place could produce so much great music. It was Hall who was the architect. A record producer, songwriter, music publisher and musician, Hall was the owner of FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, which recorded more artists and hit songs than we can mention.
Sun Ra
12
Not nearly recognized and appreciated enough in his hometown of Birmingham, Sun Ra is a true jazz great. His flair for the avante-garde would touch all aspects of jazz, and eclectic persona and stage presence would influence all of popular music. Much of his career, Ra led “The Arkestra”, an ensemble with an ever-changing lineup. Born Herman Poole Blount in Birmingham, he left to pioneer the Chicago jazz scene of the 1940s. Blount lived behind his stage persona and claimed he was an alien from Saturn on a mission to preach peace, and throughout his life he consistently denied any ties to his prior identity.

Lionel Richie The Commodores
Lionel was a fixture of the Billboard Top-10 in the 70s and 80s. The Commodores early 70s hits- Brick House, Machine Gun- helped launch Funk. From there, Lionel found his nitch with ballads that sold millions- Easy, 3 Times a Lady, Endless Love, Truly, Say You, Say Me, Still and many more are engrained in popluar culture. An amazing song writer Richie also penned the mega-hit Lady for his friend Kenny Rogers, and co-wrote We are the World with Michael Jackson.

Tammy Wynette
Wynette was born in Mississippi on the Alabama line, but she called Red Bay, Alabama her hometown. Considered the “First Lady of Country Music”, her best-known song, “Stand by Your Man”, will probably always resinate across all genres, generations and borders, and is one of the best-selling hit singles by a woman in the history of country music.
Jimmy Buffett
13
No one has gotten more out of one song as Jimmy Buffett has out of Margaritaville. He does have Cheeseburger in Paradise and Come Monday, but Margaritaville is song everyone (and I mean everyone) knows. A pioneer of the good times, his fan base (Parrotheads) are as loyal as any.
Wilson Pickett
14
A major force in the development of soul and its influence, this Prattville native co-wrote and had a major hit with “In the Midnight Hour”. Most of his 1960s acclaim came from Stax in Memphis and Fame in Muscle Shoals, as he was a huge contributor to both studios’ success.

Don Julio Reservade Barrel aged in smaller batches for eighteen months in American white-oak barrels, Don Julio® Añejo Tequila is a testament to the craft of making a superior tasting, aged tequila. Rich, distinctive and wonderfully complex, its flavor strikes the perfect balance between agave, wood and hints of vanilla. Best experienced neat in a snifter or simply on the rocks.
Did you know #1 selling Jose Cuervo Gold technically isn’t tequila? It’s mainly various grains with tequila flavoring. If you are trying to find “the best” tequila, then first, you need to check the label. If the label does not say 100% blue agave, then it’s not pure tequila. Next, you need to decide which type and flavor suits you the best. Silver and reposado have a very strong flavor. They are typically mixed into drinks such as margaritas. Añejo is smoother than the other two types. In Mexico, añejo is poured into a shot glass and savored in sips, unlike your typical shot. This is so the flavor and the ageing process can be appreciated.Jorge said that he prefers tequila añejo while playing a good game of dominos with his amigos. Jorge also said that he likes to sip his tequila while drinking a beer. He uses the beer to clear the flavor from the tequila. ABOUT

The simple answer, people gracing your doors, but this is a way deeper conversation than that. I can’t sum it up on this page but I’ll do my best. Restaurant experience , being able to identify, hire and develop talented people who are obsessed and love to please people, who are not afraid of hard work and wants to be a part of a like minded team, understands and has a passion for what it takes to prepare consistently delicious fresh food, served by passionate people pleasing people, who want to do nothing more than to love on people and make people happy in a fun and environment that exudes feel and personality.
How did you find the perfect Margarita recipe? whaver@oteystavern.com wrote:
We wanted to create a margarita that was a little smoother to drink- The “Perfect” Margarita. I love Margaritas, and there are many great restaurants that do it remarkably well today. For me, in the past, sometimes when enjoying Margaritas, I would receive slight heart burn, due to the high acidity from some margaritas. We wanted to eliminate that. The premium ingredients we use, plus a splash of orange juice, really helps cut the acidity. We shake our margaritas to wake up the juices, and serve over ice with a heavily salted rim. It all plays! You owned Otey’s for years before opening Taco Mama. What did owning and running Otey’s teach you in making Taco Mama a success? whaver@oteystavern.com wrote:
I have always valued people. I love people, but Otey’s reminded me of the importance of genuine relationships, with great people and the importance of working as a team. Oteys has always had that culture. We carried that culture to Taco Mama and built upon that foundation and added to that culture.

My decisions were all based on my instincts. I wish I had a great formula. It’s a lot of “ feel “ that is developed through travel and your past experiences in your life. It’s how your eyes see the world and what you take from your experiences, mixed with passion and blind luck. On Feb 21, at 3:40 p.m. info@abouttownsite.com wrote:

Goodness. Putting me on the spot. I love to dine. I love restaurants. If you love food, we are so fortunate to live in Birmingham. I have been traveling a bit and have quickly found out that other cities do not have as many great restaurants as we have here. Too many to name. I will leave someone out, I am sorry. Way too many. I eat out a lot and this is impossible. On Feb 22, at 4:40 p.m. info@abouttownsite.com wrote:

Taco Mama is going to keep focusing on taking care of each one of our guests who come in and support us. It’s all about food and people. We are thankful for everyone who comes and let’s us show them a good time. For this Spring and Summer, Food wise, we are going to put a lot of focus into our slow cooked & low heat roasted barbacoa. Some Barbacoa (braised beef) Taco’s or Nacho’s. Our Barbacoa is extremely tender and amazing flavor. We are currently perfecting a new margarita called “The Margarita Fizz” that will be made with a splash of champagne. Currently, no other restaurant aspirations. Having a lot of fun!!!
