Keighly is the Business Manager at the Reid Law Firm.

She began working at the firm in February of 2016.

She is an Auburn University graduate, and she plans to begin the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program in January of 2018. Keighly grew up in Hoover and is a longstanding member of Prince of Peace Catholic Church.

Daniel an intern at the Reid Law Firm and a junior at Auburn University double majoring in Political Science and Economics. He hopes to attend law school following his graduation from Auburn. In his free time, Daniel enjoys playing guitar, watching Netflix, and laying in a hammock with a good book. My Friend Always Gets Hit On... >>> My friend always gets hit on even though she doesn’t do anything to ask for that kind of attention but it makes me frustrated with her and insecure about myself. I know she can’t help how others treat her but how do I handle these feelings so I don’t let my personal frustrations out on her?

This always feels like a hopeless and frustrating situation to experience. I wonder if you might consider yourself an Introvert. My experience, when in this situation and when talking to my clients experiencing this, is that “Introvert” tends to be much more of a descriptor than “Extrovert.” This is something you must learn a bit more about, and come to understand to know how to create change. Introverts often come across as shy, scared, or lacking confidence. Maybe those things are all true, or maybe just a little true. If you evaluate your friend, ask yourself a few questions. How approachable is she? Does she exude confidence?

Does she seem fearless when meeting someone new? Attractiveness may draw them in, but, with enough confidence and ability to carry on an interesting conversation, you could be the one that keeps them there! If not, they probably aren’t the kind of guy you would want to meet anyway. Build up your confidence by doing a few simple things. Affirmations, such as looking in the mirror daily and reminding yourself that you are a beautiful, smart, and interesting woman any man should want to meet, can create a huge increase in how you view yourself.

Research suggests that confidence is one of the biggest factors in attractiveness! Many times, WE are the reason people see us a certain way.

It’s how WE “present” ourselves to the world!

Try to do some new things that don’t include hanging out with your friend. I’m not saying to end the friendship...just a bit of separation for you to learn more about YOU. Maybe this would allow you to meet some new people and practice becoming the more confident woman you know you can be! Getting out of her “shadow” for a bit and really finding yourself and your own confidence could allow for a much different experience the next time you go out with her.

>>> I recently had a single friend get upset with me because she didn’t understand why I could not go on a trip with her. It has been an annual event until I became a mother. How do you deal with maintaining friendships when you are at different places in your life?

Changes in life can be very difficult, especially when talking about marriage and parenthood. Graciously take a step back. She may not understand until/unless she has children.

Even then, mommy-hood is different for every woman!

You may feel extreme obligation, while another might want to escape every chance she gets.

Having a real discussion with her and laying out some kind of future plans might help.

Maybe you “can’t do the trip this year, but hope to resume some version of it next year.” You might offer up some one-on-one friend time for an evening or even for an overnight close to home. Facts are...we all handle life changes differently. Stay connected in as many ways as you can with the people who matter most.

Your priorities seem to be in order on this one.

I would urge you to be cautious not to get tunnel vision with mommy-hood though. Being a new mommy DOES require a lot of time and energy, but please don’t forget yourself in that equation! You still need to take time for your partner, your friends, and YOU!!!

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re over half way through 2017. How has this year compared to last, and what can expect in the local market for the second half of the year?

Year to date, 2017 has been a stronger year in the Birmingham residential real estate market. There has been a 5% increase in the number of homes sold in the area and the average price of a sold home has increased 4%. Based on the improvement in the housing market from 2017, and the shortage of housing inventory that we are seeing, I expect these increases to continue for the rest of this year.

You’re at an SEC school. Do these schools recruit cheerleaders, or is it simple tryouts? And roughly how many girls will make the team compared to how many tryout?

I absolutely recruit! I take time to visit local high schools, attend high school nationals and we host recruitment clinics on campus throughout the year. Everyone wants to feel wanted and I love to make that connection with students early in their college search. This year we had close to 200 males and females at our tryouts. We took 26 on the All Girl team and 28 on the Coed team. It’s a tough job to represent your school and we make sure our tryouts reflect that job.

Is cheerleading different in the South or SEC?

YES! Honestly, it is different everywhere. I loved teaching summer camps with UCA because one week I would be in the South, the next week in Scranton, PA and the next in Santa Barbara, CA. There are different words, outfits, styles, etc. in every region. I am partial to the South!

Ryan is the Cheer Coach/Coordinator at Ole Miss. She served as the Spirit Coordinator at UAB, and she was a collegiate cheerleader at Alabama.

How early do you recommend a girl to get started in laying a foundation to be a varsity cheerleader?

Every high school has different requirements for their varsity cheerleading team. I don’t think there is a certain age that girls and guys need to start, but sometimes it is easier to learn tumbling skills when you are younger. Some of them are also former gymnasts! Learning to stretch, tumble correctly, and stunt correctly will help you learn faster and avoid injuries.

What kind of time is expected from an SEC cheerleader?

What is the most common thing (outside of athletic ability) that you see, that keeps girls from making the team?

Most students realize very quickly that you truly never take your uniform off. Being a cheerleader at a school like Ole Miss means that you are recognized on campus, in the community and most of the time across the country through cheerleading which means you are always “on.” Between games, appearances, workouts and practices, I always tell my students to make time each day for this team. We are sometimes the only team on campus over Winter break and Spring break. It is a tough job, but I wouldn’t trade a single second of my time as an SEC Cheerleader.

Now, it is probably social media. I preach this to my high school and college students all of the time! Like I said earlier, you NEVER take the uniform off. Unfortunately, people love to bring down someone who is in the spotlight. I always say never give them a reason to do this. As soon as I meet someone at a recruitment clinic, the first thing I do is look up their social media accounts. If there is anything questionable, or even if it is blocked or private, that is a big red flag for me.

Pop culture is full of cheerleader stereotypes - both good and bad. Are there any negative stereotypes you think are misleading?

Missi is Ivey’s mother. She and her husband live in Vestavia and have five children, including three girls.

What advice would you give mothers of really young children out there who may be interested in getting their daughters started in cheerleading?

Be sure she has at least a little interest in the sport. It’s easy for us moms to expect and even insist that our kids participate in cheer or other activities because that’s what we did when we were kids. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but if we’re not sensitive to our child’s individual desires and talents, we could easily push them to resent the very thing we want her to do. One of my girls loved it, one liked it, and one hated it. I was sure to not sign up the one who hated it the following year. The one who liked it is a middle school competition cheerleader now, and the one who loved it is featured in this article!

Certainly making the team is competitive for the cheerleaders. How does this competition transfer to the parents and mothers in particularly?

To the extent that the girls want to make the cheer team, the mothers want them to make it ten times more. Whenever Ivey has tried out for cheerleading, I was more nervous than she was, and the more upset or happy if she did or didn’t make it. The competitiveness between the moms is most obvious right before the tryout process.

Some moms are very secretive about how they’re preparing their daughter, while other moms like to make it known what all their daughter is doing to prepare. Some moms seem to enjoy talking about how “ready” their daughter is, which can make other moms worry that their daughter isn’t. Personally, I try to turn a deaf ear to what everyone else is doing. I don’t want to feel like I’m not doing enough for Ivey, or overly confident that she’ll make it. I just try to focus solely on her and teach her to not look at others as her competition, but to see her biggest competitor is herself.

When I was younger, cheerleaders were often portrayed as the popular, pretty, somewhat athletic girls who typically dated football players. That’s not necessarily negative, but it’s definitely not how I’d fully describe cheerleaders today. High school cheerleaders now are athletes first and foremost! They’re incredibly strong, hard-working and competitive. They are super-skilled. They condition all summer with grueling workouts, including running in the heat. Cheerleaders also demonstrate remarkable leadership and discipline in and out of the classroom. Popularity and beauty have little to do with how likely it is that they’ll make the team. They have to be a dedicated athlete first.

Incredible stunts are performed by cheerleaders. Does Ivey’s potential for injury ever make you concerned for her safety?

Ivey fractured her L5 in 9th grade and that took her away from cheerleading for a solid year, so I am constantly on the lookout for injury. After she made varsity team at VHHS, she came home many nights complaining of a sore lower back, which would scare me to death. In fact, she would often not tell me when her back was hurting because I would worry so much that she was reinjuring herself. There’s hardly a day that she leaves for practice when I don’t say, “please don’t get hurt.”

She laughs, but that’s something I never want her to go though again!

What’s the commitment involved for parents as far as travel and expenses, and just general time?

The commitment required to be a competitive cheerleader is non-negotiable. The same is true for cheer parents. If you can’t give it your all as a parent or as an athlete, then cheerleading isn’t for you. Because cheerleaders have to be skilled in many areas, there is a lot of training required, and it takes place many hours a week and over the course of years. Obviously, in competitive cheerleading, traveling is a big part of it, so there are sacrifices parents must make to take part in that. It can be expensive, and it also costs us time at home and with our other children. But there is so much reward when you see your daughter perform and, in Ivey’s team’s case, place 4th in Nationals! That, combined with the cherished sisterhood that evolves among their teammates makes every sacrifice worth it.

THE CHEERLEADER

Ivey Wimberly Ivey is a senior on the Vestavia Varsity squad. She is currently looking at colleges, and hopes to cheer at the collegiate level.

What is your athletic background? Were there other sports/activities you engaged in in elementary school that has helped you develop into a high school competitive cheerleader?

All throughout elementary school I went to dance and gymnastics classes, but the biggest factor in preparing me for high school cheer was competing with ACE Allstars. I traveled and competed with the company until I injured my back. The time spent in tumbling classes and team practices at ACE shaped me into a competitor more than anything else.

Where does old-fashioned school spirit and personality fit into modern day competitive cheerleading, where the athletic skills required are so difficult?

While skills are necessary to compete, showing spirit and being visibly passionate are just as important, if not more so. It’s always more impressive and fun to watch stunts and tumbling when the girls performing the skills look confident. At each of the competitions we attended this past season, I noticed teams that performed half-heartedly, and saw how that affected how they scored. The most passionate performers are easily the most captivating, despite the level of their skills.

What is your fitness and diet routine in-season and off-season?

During football and competition season, the squads spend A LOT of time in the cheer room together. Our 8th period class is cheer, so that’s at least an hour every day (with the exception of game days). Tuesdays and Thursdays we practice from about 2:30-5:30, and when competition season is in full swing, we also have Sunday practices for 2 hours. January, the month before nationals, is definitely the most intense. We’re pushed farther, so more reps of everything, and showcase the routine for an audience a few times before we leave for Orlando. It’s more than exhausting, but absolutely necessary!! Preparing for tryouts is different for everyone, and summers include lots of conditioning, practices in preparation for UCA Masters camp, and then a little more conditioning after camp is over. There’s never really a time of the year that we have off! We don’t have a set diet, but are encouraged to stay away from obviously unhealthy foods and to stay hydrated at all times.

What are the expectations for cheerleaders off the stage- at school and in the community?

(The way you present yourself, behave, dress, etc.)

Even though it doesn’t always seem like it, there are often eyes on the cheerleaders. When I was in elementary and middle school, I remember watching the high school cheerleaders and wanting to be JUST like them. We are expected to keep a good attitude on and off the mat/track, and behave ourselves in a respectable way. Any questionable acts in or outside of cheer could potentially end up penalizing us, and we understand that everything we do, good or bad, reflects directly on where we come from/our program.

The classic catty cheerleader clique is so far from existent (for my squad that is). Even though there will always be competition within a team, we share such a special bond. In times that it would be easy to be negative and snappy, we continue to lift one another up which I think is very rare. I definitely consider my cheer gals as some of my best friends, and I know all of them are equally as kind to others outside of the cheer room as they are to me.

Do people treat you any differently because you’re a cheerleader? Do you feel cheerleaders are treated with a certain amount of privilege?

For the most part, people don’t realize that we keep working after football is over, so we don’t get too much recognition after late fall. We got to showcase our routine to the student body before we left for nationals though, which helped up our confidence before the biggest competition of the year. Personally, I think being able to represent the school in a positive way is privilege enough.

What’s the relationship between the varsity squad and other cheerleaders (JV and Basketball)?

The varsity squad is expected to be a model to the JV and freshman squad. We’re expected to be on top of things and always be prepared in all aspects. Because varsity doesn’t cheer at any basketball games, we don’t have much of a relationship with the basketball cheerleaders. We share the cheer room and share a love for the Rebels, but that’s just about all we have to do with each other.

DO FOR YOUR CHILD? AS K AN AC E PA RE NT My daughter has learned hard work and perseverance. It means showing up at practice, and sometimes, practicing a skill over and over, knowing it will translate into a new or perfected skill. The individual skills are then choreographed into a team performance. Sometimes those performances lead to national championships, even a world championship. She knows what it takes to persevere and improve and never give up.

She has learned teamwork. Being on a team, she has learned to be disciplined during practice and how to have patience when the going gets tough. Building on a strong team work ethic, each member of the team is valued, translating to courage and confidence.

She has learned respect. Dedicated and skilled coaches can have an amazing impact on children. Athletes learn to respect and honor their coach and coach’s decisions. I can say, without reservation, all of her ACE coaches have been excellent mentors.

She has learned discipline and organization. She has learned to balance school work and athletics, fostering a strong work ethic, even through the tough academic years of high school. She learned early on to organize her homework schedule so that she could be at practices and competitions.

She has learned about true friendship. Kids come from all over our region to participate at ACE. They are from different schools and different backgrounds. This has led to genuine friendships. Traveling to competitions also provides unique bonding experiences. She loves her teammates and they will always share a lifelong bond.

She has learned about pride. ACE is respected as one of the best all-star cheerleading companies in the nation.

When we travel to competitions, the kids (and parents!) wear their ACE gear with such pride. ACE teams are taught and encouraged to always be classy and respectful.

As a parent, it’s great to see your child discover and pursue a sport they love. It’s even more gratifying to know they’ve experienced that sport and their passion through a firstclass organization. We will forever be grateful to the entire ACE family for this experience. My mantra is, and always will be, it’s so much more than cheerleading…

To understand the history of the SEC, you need to understand a bit about Southern football. When football was starting to gain traction at schools over the nation, the South started thinking such an association with their schools would be beneficial for the economy. From there, the first Southern football game was in 1881 at Kentucky State (now University of Kentucky), where they beat Kentucky University (now Transylvania University) 7.5 to 1. The following year, Alabama, A & M College of Alabama (Auburn), Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt started to get their football programs rolling. After that, LSU, Arkansas, Texas A & M, Mississippi A & M (now Mississippi State) and Florida followed suit in that order.

Representatives came together from seven schools in 1894 to create the forefather of the SEC called the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA). Dr. William Dudley, a chemistry professor at Vanderbilt, stated it was created in order to give structure and jurisdiction over all collegiate sports. Following that meeting, 12 more schools were included in the SIAA. The SIAA stuck around through the 1920 season, and then there was a dispute regarding several regulations. It had also grown to 30 members which created issues when trying to award one true victor. After that, 18 schools left the SIAA to create the Southern Intercollegiate Conference in 1921 and the SIAA turned into a conference for small schools.

It faded out in 1942.

The Southern Conference grew to 23 colleges by 1932 and once again, became too large to manage. University of Georgia English professor Dr. S.V. Sanford, who had led the creation of the Southern Conference had to convince 13 schools west and south of the

Appalachian mountains to reinvent themselves as the Southeastern Conference. Those original members of the SEC–Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Sewanee, Tennessee, Tulane, Vanderbilt–began to play in 1933.

During the 20s, 30s and 40s as more and more Northern cities began to aquire professional teams, the South was more-or-less excluded. This helped Southern college football to gain more popularity and intensity from the local fan bases.

Sewanee pulled out from the SEC in 1940, Georgia Tech in 1964, and Tulane the following year. Arkansas and South Carolina joined in 1990, and Missouri and Texas A & M joined in 2012.

From it’s forefather the SIAA in 1894 to the modern SEC as we know it now, the SEC has dominated 9 out of the last 14 national champions, closed two of the largest TV contracts in college football history and then created its own network in 2014. The SEC is a force to be reckoned with.

SEC TIMELINE Dec 8, 1932 At the annual Southern Conference meeting in Knoxville, the 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized as the SEC. Fall, 1933 Coach Frank Thomas leads Alabama (5-0-1) to the first SEC football championship title with a 7-0 win over Vanderbilt.

Oct. 20, 1951 The AL-TN football game in Legion Field becomes the first televised event in SEC history. Tennessee would win 27-13, and go on to win the National Championship.

1942 Georgia’s Frank Sinkwich becomes the first SEC player to win the Heisman.

1958 Alabama hires Bear Bryant from Texas A&M. The Tide is 5-4-1 in his first year.

1965 Kentucky football’s Nate Northington becomes the first African American athlete to receive a football scholarship at an SEC institution.

1964 Georgia Tech withdraws from SEC.

1948 The SEC office relocates to Birmingham because of its central location.

The crimson came from a Southern Belle from New Orleans who sponsored an event the school’s cadets were competing in. She wore her favorite color- crimson to compliment their black and gray uniforms. It stuck.

In-School Programs from DISCO The Woodlawn Writers Corps is a collective of more than 500 student writers at Oliver Elementary, Avondale Elementary and Putnam Middle School. The students in the Corps meet weekly throughout the school year for curriculum-aligned poetry workshops with volunteers from the Desert Island Supply Co. (DISCO), a nonprofit creative writing program and community arts center based in Woodlawn.

During Woodlawn Writers Corps workshops, students explore how poetry and language intersect with history, science, math and the arts.

The sessions are designed to be challenging and fun, with the main goal of strengthening the students’ writing skills, intensifying their intellectual habits and giving them the creative tools they need to explore and document their worlds.

At the end of each school year, DISCO’s publishing partner, Squid Inc., publishes an anthology that includes a poem by every Corps member. Each student receives a free copy of the book. DRIVING AFTER DARK Driving After Dark was a unique golf and tennis experience benefitting United Abilityâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;formerly UCP of Greater Birmingham.

DIAMONDS FOR LIFE Kid One Transport’s largest fundraising event of the year, Diamonds for Life, welcomed over 300 guests to the Grand Bohemian Hotel. Ms. Nelson is originally from New Orleans, and attended Samford University for her Bachelor’s Degree and earned her Master’s Degree from Kennesaw State University in Georgia. She is going into her 17th year in education.

She married her high school sweetheart and they have four children.

What’s unique about Avondale Elementary?

What kind of support have you seen from the surrounding neighborhood who may not have children at Avondale?

Ms. Nelson: It’s unique in that we have multiple partnerships throughout the community. We have that “old neighborhood school” feel. All of our students visit our Farm Lab weekly, sponsored by Jones Valley Teaching Farm and are provided hands-on learning experiences through cultivation and harvesting. Avondale is one of 5 schools in the district to be in the Woodlawn Innovation Network community.

This offers students a chance to explore learning through a variety of project-based learning experiences to community-based opportunities for both students and parents.

What are some of your proudest moments from your time at Avondale?

Ms. Nelson: My proudest moment at Avondale was being recognized at the Woodlawn Innovation Network as the school with the most dramatic gains in literacy, moving 21 students 3+ grade levels in one year of instruction in either Reading or Math.

Ms. Nelson: Avondale Elementary is fortunate to have multiple community partnerships and community members who are invested in the school. Many of our contributors don’t have children in the school, but feel connected to their local neighborhood school. Our local partners and community member’s contributions range from volunteer tutoring, book buddies, school supply donations and monetary donations for items such as: student uniforms, school-wide field trips, field day support, teacher incentives and after-school activities support. Our success is absolutely a result of the community-at-large in conjunction with our local school efforts joining forces to make Avondale the optimal learning environment for the children we serve.

What would you say to the parents zoned for Avondale who are apprehensive about sending their child to a Birmingham City School?

Ms. Nelson: Avondale is a true neighborhood school. We are a family that cares for, and supports each other. Our teachers are all certified in the content area or grade levels they teach, and are required to keep abreast of all the bestpractices in education. We are in the business of children at Avondale. They come first with every decision we make and that will never change.

Our Birmingham school system hasn’t always had the best reputation at times. As someone in the trenches, what are some realistic goals and improvements the city can make?

Ms. Nelson: One of the most needed things around schools in the Birmingham City System is wraparound services for children. Children with social and emotional issues need support beyond our current capacity and training as educators.

This is a need the district recognizes and is working diligently to establish processes in this area for the children we serve.
