Hilltop Montessori School An education in an environment which fosters a child’s love of learning and respect for self, others, community and the world.

The Montessori Method

is the result of the experiences and discoveries of Dr. Maria Montessori (1870–1952). Maria Montessori observed that a child has an “absorbent mind,” especially between the ages of three and six. She believed children should stay within a single classroom for three years to fully develop their conscious awareness of their whole selves. The older children mentor the younger children in the classroom. This boosts their confidence and emotional well-being while reinforcing what they already know.

The Montessori classroom uses concrete materials that are self-correcting and allow children to learn at their own pace. These materials help the child to see, touch, feel and freely explore their environments without the teacher’s intervention. The Montessori teacher provides individual instruction within set guidelines. The children learn self respect, respect for others and respect for their environment.

Montessori methods and materials promote inner discipline and self-motivation.

PHASE 3 EXPANSION As part of Hilltop Montessori School’s third and final expansion, Hilltop Montessori School will offer our gymnasium as an after-school-hours resource to the Mt Laurel community and our immediate neighbors.

While the students will use the teaching kitchen and gymnasium for some aspects of the school day, our vision for this space is a shared partnership.

The new “Mt Laurel Community Center” will permit us to offer convenient, morning exercise classes for parents, after-school education for children and a venue for small events in the area. As a sign of gratitude, residents and businesses in the Mt Laurel community will be permitted to rent the space for after-hours activities without cost, beyond cleanup of their event.

We hope this area will be a gathering place for the school community, as well as our neighbors in the area. Specifically, the expansion’s programming will include: An expanded music and art area, including a stage for performances that can be utilized for the students during the school day and the community at night, weekends, summers and holidays.

The main focus of a Montessori teacher is to guide each child by providing a well-prepared environment. This environment fosters the creativity and the curiosity of the child and also bolsters the child’s self-esteem. The child is able to learn independently and with the help of his peers and teacher. Children receiving Montessori instruction excel academically and socially and gain the confidence they need to reach their fullest potential.

HILLTOP MONTESSORI and its stakeholders are involved members of the Birmingham community. Offering a quality, Montessori education to the Birmingham area since 1996, Hilltop is located in the beautiful town of Mt Laurel, off of Highway 41 near Greystone and Shoal Creek.

Hilltop supports the community by participating in neighborhood events, community service projects, sports teams and academic competitions.

Accredited and established, Hilltop graduates leaders in the community, including 1 Fulbright Scholar, 6 National Merit scholars, over 100 Honor Society students and national award winners in science, technology, foreign language and mathematics. This includes an Intel Science and Engineering national winner and a state winner of the National Geography Bee. 2) All children have an innate drive and ability to learn. The educational community should follow the child and meet each child’s needs.

There’s a committee of roughly 75 people that is lead by the creative director (Chloe Cook), and her four assistants. Together, starting in December, they launch a call for entrees across the globe. They receive roughly 1000 films that are viewed through an online film portal. Meetings are held regularly to see what stands out. Starting in May the creative director spends roughly 12 hours a day watching films.

The team makes a point to look for diverse subject matter, and the selection becomes more strategic. The creative director also keeps her ear to the ground to look for any movies that have gotten some buzz, but may have missed the submission. Ultimately, 65-85 feature films, and 150 short films are selected.

A BIRMINGHAM SUCCESS STORY

Making a Difference NEIGHBORHOOD ACADEMY Neighborhood Academy, Inc. is a Birmingham-based non-profit dedicated to mentoring inner city middle school age boys and girls living in the underserved neighborhoods of Birmingham. Neighborhood Academy students divide their time between extra tutoring in the classroom and learning the fundamentals of lacrosse on the field. Founder, Tom Lewis, says, “Lacrosse is the hook. Education is what’s happening. Even on the lacrosse field, I’m educating.”

In hopes of making a real difference, Tom Lewis started Neighborhood Academy in 2014 to work directly with 5th and 6th graders, an age when fundamental changes to learning habits and skills can be made. The program started at the Ensley Recreation Center, and received its nonprofit status in October 2014.

Knowing that transportation is a major issue, Neighborhood Academy’s strategy is to go where the students are. In partnership with Birmingham Parks & Rec and the YMCA Downtown, Neighborhood Academy has established learning centers in many of Birmingham’s underserved areas. Each location provides Neighborhood Academy with 5th and 6th grade students, dedicated program space, computers and utilities. If computers are not available, NA will find or purchase used computers to donate to the locations. In addition, Neighborhood Academy provides lacrosse coaching and the necessary lacrosse equipment. The key component of the program is that it’s taught in rec centers where kids are already hanging out in their free time.

Neighborhood Academy focuses about 80% of their time on academics and 20% on lacrosse. Students attend two days a week during the school year and three days a week during the summer. The Academy and its volunteer teachers focus on math, geography, public speaking skills and then lacrosse. They also invite guest speakers to teach cooking, small engine repair, ethics and career development.

Accepted students attend Neighborhood Academy at no charge.

What Can ACE Do for Your Child?

ASK AN ACE PARENT My daughter has learned hard work and perseverance. It means showing up at practice, and sometimes, practicing a skill over and over, knowing it will translate into a new or perfected skill. The individual skills are then choreographed into a team performance. Sometimes those performances lead to national championships, even a world championship.

She knows what it takes to persevere and improve and never give up.

She has learned teamwork. Being on a team, she has learned to be disciplined during practice and how to have patience when the going gets tough. Building on a strong team work ethic, each member of the team is valued, translating to courage and confidence.

She has learned respect. Dedicated and skilled coaches can have an amazing impact on children. Athletes learn to respect and honor their coach and coach’s decisions. I can say, without reservation, all of her ACE coaches have been excellent mentors.

She has learned discipline and organization. She has learned to balance school work and athletics, fostering a strong work ethic, even through the tough academic years of high school. She learned early on to organize her homework schedule so that she could be at practices and competitions.

She has learned about true friendship. Kids come from all over our region to participate at ACE. They are from different schools and different backgrounds. This has led to genuine friendships. Traveling to competitions also provides unique bonding experiences. She loves her teammates and they will always share a lifelong bond.

She has learned about pride. ACE is respected as one of the best all-star cheerleading companies in the nation. When we travel to competitions, the kids (and parents!) wear their ACE gear with such pride. ACE teams are taught and encouraged to always be classy and respectful.

As a parent, it’s great to see your child discover and pursue a sport they love. It’s even more gratifying to know they’ve experienced that sport and their passion through a first-class organization. We will forever be grateful to the entire ACE family for this experience. My mantra is, and always will be, it’s so much more than cheerleading…

Birmingham Fashion Week Over the past 6 years, Birmingham Fashion Week (BFW) has grown into one of the top events in the city. This growth would not be possible without all of the volunteers, especially the model volunteers. Since its inception, BFW has helped 100s of aspiring models to gain runway exposure while teaching them the ins and outs of the fashion industry. Each year BFW selects a model that they feel has the potential to make it in the fashion industry. These models connect with huge modeling agencies such as NEXT and Wilhelmina that carry them to photo shoots and ad campaigns all over the globe. BFW has had numerous model success stories, but these two ladies, Miss Ellie Martin and Miss Baskin Champion, are proving to be superstars in the modeling industry.

Here is a small glimpse into their life as a model.

ELLIE MARTIN

Ellie Martin, (@elliemartn) the 2015 Model Winner, attends Mountain Brook High School and she loves to travel. She has been with a mother agency, Ursula Wiedmann Models in Atlanta, for a little over 2 years and was signed with Next Models Worldwide last summer (discovered by them through Instagram) and has been pursuing modeling ever since! She has been to Miami, New York, Los Angeles, Peru, and hopefully will be going more places in the near future! Ellie has worked for Forever 21, Ugg Boots, Cyzone and others, and she has been in multiple editorials. Ellie loves spending time with friends and family and can’t wait to see where modeling will take her!

How instrumental was Birmingham Fashion Week in getting your foot in the door of the modeling world?

It gave me the confidence to try and take my career to the next level. It was shortly after that I signed with Next!

How has your experience on the Birmingham Fashion Week runway compared to other runway events you have participated in?

BFW is a wonderful starting platform. All shows have the same level of excitement and adrenaline rush. There’s nothing like it!

What is the biggest misconception about modeling professionally?

That you get to keep the clothes. Psh. I wish.

Who has been your favorite designer to work with and why?

Rachel Zoe! Her confidence and energy is so amazing to be around.

What advice do you have for other aspiring models?

Don’t let time discourage you! If your agency or family is having you wait longer than desired before you can get where you want to be, don’t give up. Just think of it as more time to prepare yourself and your body. Time flies!

Do you feel like your career as a professional model has helped prepare you for additional career opportunities in the fashion world?

Yes!! I can’t wait to see what I end up doing post-modeling.

How instrumental was Birmingham Fashion Week in getting your foot in the door of the modeling world?

BFW was very instrumental. It is where I learned how to walk a runway and found my love for modeling.

Has your experience as a professional model been everything that you have expected it to be so far?

My experience as a professional model has been absolutely thrilling. But I do have to say, before I was a model, I thought that professional models lived the easiest, most glamorous life, and I’ve come to find that it is not really always so glamorous. It can be very intense sometimes.

What is the biggest misconception about modeling professionally?

From the outside it looks like it is always so easy and glamorous, but it can be very challenging at times. For example, we usually shoot summer clothes, such as swimwear and shorts and normal summer clothes in the winter, and winter clothes in the summer.

Which if you’ve ever been in a swimsuit in the winter, then you know what I’m talking about.

BASKIN CHAMPION Baskin Champion, (@baskinchamp) is a Next & Wilhelmina professional model. Currently living in Los Angeles. Has had the opportunity to model in Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and various locations in South America. Baskin started out modeling for Birmingham Fashion Week and Soca Clothing. She has now worked for Show Me Your Mumu, Sketchers, Victoria’s Secret Pink, Hollister, Frankie’s Bikinis, Jovani, Soca Clothing, and various other companies.

She loves getting to travel the world and meeting other interesting people.

What advice do you have for other aspiring models?

There are a lot of great agencies in Atlanta! It took me about five years to actually get signed with an agency.

It takes time, so be patient, but also pursue your dreams.

Who has been your favorite designer to work with and why?

Show Me Your Mumu. They are some of my great friends and we always have a blast on our shoots and I forget that I’m at work!
