Seven Fun Facts about Vulcan 4. Later, when his arms were reattached, the right one was put on backward, so it looked like Vulcan was flipping Birmingham a rude gesture. A smaller spear was forged, but it made Vulcan look more comical than masculine.
1. The World’s Biggest – Vulcan is cast from iron, and remains to this day the largest cast-iron statue in the world. 2. The sculptor made Vulcan’s head oversized so that, viewed from the ground, the figure wouldn’t look like today’s Zippy the Pinhead. 3. Because there wasn’t a building large enough in Birmingham to serve as his workshop, Moretti made the figure out of clay in a deserted cathedral in Passaic, N.J., shipping 21 pieces by train to Alabama. The parts were cast, then railroaded to St. Louis, where they were assembled just in time for the fair. Vulcan captured a grand prize, but on the way home, disaster struck: Someone misplaced Vulcan’s spear, which was never found. “Who knows?” someone involved in the transporation said. “It might have ended up in some bar in Memphis.” ABOUT
5. In 1946, somebody envisioned another use for the city’s alter ego: They replaced the spear with alternating neon torches for an auto safety program. Every day for 50 years, if no one died in a vehicle crash, Vulcan would hold aloft a green torch, viewable for miles. On the days when someone died, the torch turned red. 6. Over the years Vulcan held a number of objects including a giant ice cream cone, a pickle sign and a Coke bottle. He once even wore a giant pair of Liberty overalls. 7. Vulcan Park and Museum sells Vulcan bobble-heads. But that’s not all that used to shake. “We called it the Vulcan bobble-head and bobble-buns.” 4 TOWN

Does My Husband Have a Drug Problem? >>> I’m concerned my husband is taking drugs. He’s successful, a good parent and provider. There’s always been some moderate recreational drug use, which I’m kind of ok with, and we’ve never had a huge incident. But there’s something that just seems not quite right. Am I being crazy? Maybe it’s just his way of relaxing? He says he’s not doing any, of course. Is spying or setting a trap a bad idea to find out how truthful he’s being?
I do not think you are being crazy. I think you are being cautious. Many people are successful, good parents, and quality providers, while still having a substance use problem. I wish I could ask you to go into more detail about what doesn’t seem “quite right,” but, unfortunately, I don’t have that luxury. I would encourage you to give some pause to those gut feelings, and seriously consider their origin. Too many times our gut feelings are accurate, but we discount them because another person tells us we are wrong or “crazy.” If it is just his way of relaxing and you have traditionally been OK with a moderate level of recreational drug use, he’s either got a REAL problem, or he really isn’t using more than you see. Are there reasons for you to be concerned about his ability to be honest with you? Has he lied about other situations or things in your marriage?
I’ll probably have every individual with an addiction issue hating me with this next comment. However, the rule of thumb is “if an addict is moving their lips, they are probably lying.” This isn’t to say he is an addict or that he is lying. It IS to say, if he in fact does have a substance use problem, he’s probably not going to tell you the truth about it. As for the spying or setting a trap, will it end your marriage if he figures out what you are doing? Are your kids at risk if you do nothing and he does have a problem? You are a mom, and, though I feel strongly about a spouse being put above children on the “priority list,” this changes completely when the spouse possibly doesn’t have the child/children’s best interest at heart. There are some great Private Investigation firms in town. This would be the best way for him not to find out about your “curiosities” in the event that he’s actually being completely honest with you. It’s also a far more accurate means of knowing the truth than by doing your own spying.

By: Scott Atkinson, Wine Manager at the PIGGLY WIGGLY IN CRESTLINE
IT WAS THE BEST OF TIMES. IT WAS THE WORST TIMES We at the Piggly Wiggly are very honored that you chose us as the best wine shop around. Our peers are pretty dang good, so to be selected as the Best of the Best is a strong compliment. And not only do we not take it lightly, but we will not rest on our laurels. We will try even harder to maintain our place as number one.
middle) The Eyrie Vineyards
Pinot Noir, South Block Original Vines
It’s our understanding is that there are only about a hundred cases made of this, the best American Pinot Noir. Chosen from the best 10 rows of vines in the original planting of the Eyrie Vineyard, this esteemed bottling (the 1975 vintage) placed an extremely close second to the best of Drouhin’s Grand Cru Burgundies. To boil it down, at a time when nobody knew where Oregon was… they produced a Pinot Noir that took the rest of Burgundy (the home of Pinot Noir) to school. The South Block is the best of the best. - SCOTT ATKINSON
right) Liquid Farm Four
There are so many amazing wines on our shelves that it feels almost impossible to designate just one as my favorite. I often feel that California Chardonnays get overlooked when discussing the topic of exceptional wines. The 2015 Liquid Farm “Four” Chardonnay from Santa Barbara is a spectacular representation of just how excellent a well made California Chardonnay can be. With medium to full bodied richness, you’ll taste hints of lemon cream, toasted bread, honeysuckle and lemongrass. Whether you are a fan of New World California Chardonnays or prefer a traditional Old World style, this wine is sure to leave a lasting impression. - LILLIAN MEARS
left) Jean-Paul Thevenet
Morgon 2018 I am a sucker
for some Cru Beaujolais, and this Jean-Paul Thevenet 2018 Morgon may be my favorite to have come in the shop this year. Thevenet himself is a member of the so-called “Gang of Four”, a group of Beaujolais producers of great prestige who are imported by Berkeley, CA-based wine merchant Kermit Lynch. With bright acidity and beautiful fruit and earth, this wonderfully weightless wine will be a delight with any lighter fare or even a spring day on the patio. Serve slightly chilled for maximum enjoyment. - THOMAS WARREN

Reasons
LOVE LOVE to
Birmingham As you’ve probably noticed, every issue of About Town is built around the fundraising events hosted by our city’s charities. We asked some of our charity partners to tell us their reasons why they love Birmingham. Here’s what they said. See if you agree! Presented by:
B ECKY H O LT
President, Junior League of Birmingham
“
The JLB continues to make huge strides in a number of different impact areas within our community, including the areas of: 1) human trafficking awareness and education as we develop and foster relationships with other key partners in the state, 2) diaper need awareness and distribution through the JLB Diaper Bank, 3) food insecurity through our Second Servings Program that provides prepared food to those in need on a weekly basis in food-insecure areas. From a membership standpoint, the JLB’s ability to continue to attract the most dedicated group of leaders and volunteers for 98 years is simply amazing! It is inspiring to see so many of our members contributing to our community in meaningful and impactful ways.”

A CONVERSATION WITH
Dr. Mark Yanosky, Board Certified Orthodontist
2020
Seems like kids are getting braces at younger ages than ever before. What’s the best age to visit the orthodontist? We find that the kids that get the best results have been followed from a younger age–say 7 and older. The VAST majority of the time, no actual treatment is needed until most or all of the baby teeth have fallen out around age 12 on average. For some, early intervention is necessary to avoid or limit more challenging treatment in the future.
What do you enjoy most about your practice? The people .... plain and simple. We have a great team that I’m proud of. It’s also a blast to take care of so many patients of different backgrounds and ages. We are honored to care for so many of them. Also the community–we pride ourselves on giving back to the community in every way possible.
I know many adults who are also being treated these days .... are you seeing this in your practice?
Dr. Yanosky graduated from the UAB School of Dentistry in 1999,
Yes. The fastest segment of growth in the orthodontic market seems to be adult treatment. We are now literally seeing patients as young as elementary school all the way up to patients in their 60’s, 70’s and even 80’s! Clear aligner treatment has really done a nice job of giving patients an option where they don’t want traditional or even “clear” braces glued to their teeth.
entered private practice and has lectured nationally and internationally
receiving numerous awards including the Dean’s Medal, the school’s highest honor. After finishing orthodontic specialty training, Dr. Yanosky on several different topics in orthodontics, Since 2010, he has served as an adjunct assistant professor of orthodontics at UAB. His spare time is devoted to staying active with his wife and three kids.

“My husband and I asked Kristen to help us find our first home together in Homewood. I trusted her to help us because she is also a friend. I am so glad we had her and her wonderful assistant to support us during our search! She helped us find the perfect home and just as importantly, encouraged us NOT to buy when the timing wasn’t right. She and Leigh were so attentive and responsive the whole time. I highly recommend Kristen McGee for your buying and selling needs!” - Laura
“We can’t say enough about how fantastic our experience was with Kristen. She and Leigh are a great team and made us feel like we were top priority. They are extremely knowledgeable and were able to guide us through the sell of our home/purchase of a new home seamlessly. If anything came up, Kristen had a contact or solution to resolve the matter immediately. We are incredibly grateful they made this such a positive and easy process. Working with Kristen was the best decision!” - Garland C

Peck’s Points!
3 pointers for selling your current home ... and finding the next one. 1. Get Right on Price. It’s very easy to over price your home. Spending too much time on the Internet can walk you down that path quickly. Leaving,“wiggle room” or “room to negotiate” is detrimental to your sale and only helps other sellers in the area. 2. Clutter Less, Show More. I use the “Half & Half”
rule. Look at flat surfaces of your home and remove half of the items. Next, remove half of those items. Same goes for pillows, clothes, pictures and books. You want to show the space of your home and allow the buyer to imagine their belongings in it; not how many figurines you can fit on a hallway table.
Coming in 2020 to Montevallo 1105 Ashville Rd. Montevallo, AL 35115
3. Visit Neighborhoods, Not Websites. The Internet
offers an amazing array of choices for the home buyer and gives tons of very practical and useful information. However, home buying is a Process of Elimination rather than a Shopping Spree. This is where we will make a plan based on your wants and needs for your new home. Next, we will tour neighborhoods that have the most listings that meet your needs. Websites can help narrow down options, but spending time in a house is the only way to feel right at home.

2020 Why Real Estate?
I have always had a passion for helping others. I needed a career where every day brought new challenges and introduced me to new people. It is a complete joy to help people achieve their goals of homeownership. Why did you join eXp?
eXp is what you would call a disrupter in real estate. They offer top-notch technology, resources, benefits, and AMAZING STAFF. I made this move to better assist clients and help my business continue to grow. Your company in Real Estate is your backbone. What areas of real estate do you specialize in?
I like to keep my options open for my clients. In my first two years, I did everything I could to learn and experience new things. I service First time home buyers, Second property purchases and sales, Estate Sales, Foreclosures, New construction, Flipping, Rentals, Investments, HUD homes, and Relocation. If I don’t know I will find out, I love a good challenge and expanding my knowledge! Is it currently a buyer’s market or a seller’s market?
Honestly, it is a little of both. Right now inventory is extremely low, which creates competition, houses often sell in 1-2 days with multiple offers. For buyers, rates are extremely low which allows your dollar to go much farther towards the home of your dreams. How long does the home selling process typically take?
From your complimentary meeting to making or receiving an offer can vary depending on your home and what you are looking for. I usually try to have my clients under contract in no more than three weeks. Contract to close is usually 30-45 days! I always cater to you. My goal is to make a plan and strategy to fit you and your needs. STATS: Average Days on Market: 28 days Units Sold since 2018: 38

your search for a real estate professional ends here. See what clients are saying about Scott Wells Ford ... “My husband and I unexpectedly sold our home of 43 years and took the opportunity to move to B’ham to be closer to our sons and grandchildren. Scott had practiced law with our oldest son several years back and was also helping a family member look for a new home when I first met him a year or two ago. So, I called Scott to help us with our new home search. He was so attentive to our wants & needs-understood what we were looking for, and searched diligently for our dream home. He was in constant contact with us and made me feel that I could contact him anytime. We had many ‘showings” before Scott got wind of a house going on the market that seemed to be exactly what we had been searching for. He checked it out & called us to be first in line to see the house. We loved it. With Scott’s guidance, we made an offer & got the house! Scott led us through every step of the purchase & has become our good friend. We needed to sale our condo in B’ham. Well, Scott sold it first day on the market for full asking. Can’t ask for more than that. If you are looking to buy or to sell in the B’ham area call Scott! He is a 5 Star!” - Paula Irby
