The Editor’s Notebook If anyone doubted the commitment of our community during the Atkins tornado and recovery aftermath, this issue should solidify one’s belief in our friends and neighbors.

April is a month where volunteers from all walks of life are recognized both locally and nationally. We’re proud to bring you stories about the people who live and work in the River Valley. From the ADHH hospice volunteers who render care to a patient during their last days, to the volunteers at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, and finally, to the CASA volunteers -- who may be unfamiliar to a large portion of our readers.

Please see “Staying Active, Staying Involved,� on pages 8-9 and read about the vitality and importance of the volunteer staff of Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center.

Did you realize that last year 164 children were removed from homes in our area for neglect or abuse? I know I will never smell another pancake cooking without remembering the story of Ryan* or the placement plight of Cathy* (*Not their real names) while reading “A Voice for the Innocent,� beginning on page 16. CASA volunteers make a difference in the lives of these children. Do you have what it takes to join them?

On pages 28-29, you’ll discover how and why volunteers for the Arkansas Department of Health Hospice lend a helping hand to patients choosing to spend their final days at home. Described as “the cream of the crop,� these and other volunteers are to be celebrated and commended for their giving spirit.

There are so many others not mentioned in this issue, but you know them. We hope you’ll take the time to thank them for their deeds. Sometimes the only thanks they get is a pat on the back. Make it a big one!

Celebrating 75 Years of Great State Parks W

ith gasoline at an all-time high, Arkansans may be staying closer to home this spring and summer. How lucky we are to live right in the heart of four wonderful state parks, with others just a few hours away!

Why not help Arkansas State Parks celebrate their 75th anniversary by joining them in “Making Memories,” the theme for the year-long celebration? Events beginning in April are listed here.

Beginning at 1 p.m. every Tuesday and Saturday through April, the park staff at Lake Dardanelle State Park will feature their aquarium exhibit located in the Visitor’s Center. The park offers visitors the chance to see 8,000 gallons of aquariums filled with many of the fish species found in Lake Dardanelle. Join the park staff as they feed the fish live food.

On Friday, April 4, a park interpreter will invite guests to “Creatures of the Night,” from 7 to 8 p.m. at the park amphitheater. “Learn what animals come out when we go to sleep as we talk about some of Lake Dardanelle State Park’s nocturnal residents,” says Amber Mascuiili, interpreter.

“Nature Tales,” a story about two unlikely friends, will be held at 2 to 2:30 p.m. each Saturday in April at the visitor’s center.

A park interpreter will conduct a short activity in the children’s corner of the center following the story.

Do you know the difference between a venomous and a non-venomous snake? If not, join park staff from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the orientation room at the visitor’s center to learn about the legless creatures and try to understand some of their actions.

From 5 to 6 p.m. park staff will host, “Spring-O.” There are many creatures that live in and around Lake Dardanelle; the wetlands that surround the lake create the perfect homes. Learn about the wetlands and the creatures that call them home. Join a park interpreter in front of the visitor center to start the adventure.

Later that same evening, beginning at 8 p.m., guests are invited to attend “Fireside Stories.”

“Telling stories is a centuries old tradition created for pleasure, as well as to pass down the history and oral traditions of an area or group of people,” added Mascuiili.

“Meet a park interpreter at the fire ring behind the amphitheater screen to hear some stories, share some stories, and enjoy the fire light.”

On Friday, April 11, join a park interpreter from 4 to 5 p.m. for Wetland Address. Guests

will meet in the grassy area across from the visitor center to talk about why wetlands are a great place to live and who lives there.

From 7:15 to 8 p.m., enjoy “The Stories of Lake Dardanelle.” Meet a park interpreter near the north boat ramp, behind the Area A bath house, to hear some stories of the River Valley as the sun sets on Lake Dardanelle. Bring blankets and chairs to sit on the grass, as you see these stories come to life right before your eyes!

On Saturday, April 12, beginning at 4 p.m., join park staff for “What’s Your Cover?”

Saint Mary’s Volunteers; Making a Difference in the River Valley.

It’s 8 a.m. on Monday morning, and the Saint Mary’s census is already showing over 100 patients. The cafeteria is bustling with family and staff chatting about the past weekend and the upcoming week, when overhead the intercom repeats a familiar message, “Attention volunteers, we need a 16 to Same Day Surgery, a 16 to Same Day Surgery, please.”

To the unfamiliar, the message makes little sense. To the members of the Saint Mary’s volunteer auxiliary, it is a call to action. The staff in Same Day Surgery needs a volunteer with wheelchair training to assist a patient. Messages like this can be heard all day, everyday at Saint Mary’s. Volunteers may be needed to deliver X-rays, escort a new mother and her baby to their car, refill coffee in the surgery waiting room, or hold the hand of a nervous patient.

Volunteerism enables many people to stay active in the community and work alongside their peers. “It’s about taking part in the community and making a difference in the lives of our neighbors,” said Toni Mills, volunteer coordinator.

Volunteers at Saint Mary’s carry out specific duties that aid staff, guests and patients throughout the hospital. Some may assist with hospitality and clerical needs, while others serve as greeters and wheelchair escorts. Volunteering can be as simple as assisting at health fairs, reading to patients or assembling complimentary patient admit kits to provide patients with a few essentials they may need during their stay. It doesn’t matter the task or project, nor does it matter if you only have a small amount of time each week to give. Volunteer assignments are designated in four-hour shifts, and Saint Mary’s offers a variety of opportunities for all ages.

In addition to regular duty at the hospital, many volunteers contribute additional time to various committees within the program.

The “Stamps for Soldiers” committee, for example, collects used postage stamps that are then donated to veterans’ hospitals.

Wounded soldiers or those who may have suffered strokes clean paper from the stamps, which helps with fine motor skill rehabilitation. The Lifeline committee sets up Philips Lifeline medical alert systems in the homes of those subscribing to the service. Other committees include recruiting, newsletter and gift shop, to name a few.

Saint Mary’s volunteers are responsible for management of the hospital gift shop, Compliments. All monies collected as profit are contributed to nursing scholarships.

Proceeds from two annual jewelry sales, sponsored and hosted by the auxiliary, are also donated to scholarships. In 2007, Saint Mary’s volunteers awarded a total of $3000.00 to student nurses.

Along with the benefits of building lasting friendships and feeling the satisfaction of serving others in the River Valley community, Saint Mary’s volunteers enjoy discounts at Compliments Gift Shop and receive a regular newsletter. Each spring, an installation luncheon is held where new members are recognized and pins are awarded for members’ annual service.

Volunteers also participate in hospital volunteer auxiliary conferences at the district and state levels.

The Volunteer of Excellence award is given annually to an individual who consistently goes above and beyond in service as a Saint Mary’s volunteer.

Each year, hospital employees submit names of nominees for the award. A winner is then chosen based upon criteria such as a volunteer’s responsibilities, the number

of years given in service, the number of hours worked, and the person’s overall commitment and dedication to the Saint Mary’s team. Occasionally, the award is given to a couple rather than an individual, as was the case in 2007 for Woody and Evelyn Harris.

Well known for their long-time community efforts, the Harrises have volunteered at Saint Mary’s for more than a decade.

Together they have given over 3,000 hours of service. ”We’ve enjoyed every minute of our work here,” Woody said.

“It keeps us involved with the public and aware of what’s needed in the community.”

Mike McCoy, chief executive officer (CEO) of Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center, expressed his gratitude to all hospital volunteers. ”Our volunteers are beautiful ambassadors for the hospital,” he said. “A volunteer may often be the first, and the last, person a guest sees here. The gracious and enthusiastic way in which they give of their time and talents to help others is truly commendable. They provide invaluable services to our hospital and our community, and we are thankful for all that they do.”

Volunteering can be personally satisfying, challenging and fun when one uses his or her skills, talents and time to benefit others.

As Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give.” Saint Mary’s volunteers exhibit a continuous sense of volunteerism that lifts the spirits of those they come in contact

Anita Martin with every day. With a current roster of 79 members, 60 active members collectively gave over 16,000 hours of service in 2007.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame Baseball has long been called America’s pastime.

in

Cooperstown, New York, in the mid-19th century, baseball fans have shown devotion to their favorite teams, following the players through their ups and downs and looking forward to the energy and excitement of baseball season every year.

Most baseball fans sport their team’s colors and watch games on television from the comfort of their own homes. Some are lucky enough to see their favorite team in person. Avid baseball fans, like Dr. Michael Cooper, D.D.S. of Russellville, step up their game and take their dedication to the next level.

For the past five years, Dr. Cooper has attended the Cardinals Legends Camp, a five-day baseball event for ardent St. Louis Cardinals fans. Each year, around 100 men gather at the Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida, to live and breathe Cardinals baseball for five days.

From Wednesday to Sunday, campers interact directly with living Cardinals baseball legends and even get to play against each other and the legends during the week. The camp allows Cardinals fans a glimpse into life as a professional baseball player. Campers use the same facilities the professional players use during spring training, including the locker room, clubhouse, practice fields, batting cages and trainers. The participants even receive two genuine Cardinals uniforms, customized with their own names and stored in their personal lockers in the Cardinals locker room.

“They try to make this as close to a major league spring training as they can for old guys like me,” Dr. Cooper said.

The men are divided into eight teams and each team is coached by two former Cardinals players. The teams play in a round robin tournament throughout the week and determine a winner at the end of the camp. One of the highlights of the week comes on Sunday when each of the eight teams plays a three-inning game against the legends, who have only lost one game in the history of legends camp. Each camper gets one chance to bat against a legend during the final game.

Lou Brock Over his five years at camp and five times at bat against a legend, Dr. Cooper thinks he has finally figured the pitchers out. According to him, the easiest pitches come first, in the form of fastballs. If a batter misses the first two or three pitches, the pitcher will often throw more difficult pitches to hurriedly get the batter out.

“They can throw hard when they want to,” he recalled, impressed by the legends’ athletic abilities. “If you want a hit, swing at the first two pitches because they’ll be the best ones you can get. Anything else, and you’re history.”

Half the men who attend the camp each year are returning campers. Known as the ‘veterans,’ they have built friendships with each other during their many years at camp and keep in touch after heading home. These relationships, bound by baseball, are Dr. Cooper’s favorite part of the experience.

“The neat part of it is the camaraderie that the campers develop over the years, not only with the campers but with the former Cardinal players,” Dr. Cooper said.

One of the many players Dr. Cooper has befriended is Al Hrabosky, former pitcher and current broadcaster for the Cardinals.

School’s pre-season baseball tournament, in which his son, Chris, played. Dr. Cooper asked the legend for speaker suggestions for the banquet. Hrabosky himself volunteered to make the trip to Russellville, and “The Mad Hungarian” spoke to over 300 people at the February 2006 banquet, which brought in $6,000 dollars for RHS baseball.

Another friend of Dr. Cooper’s is Rick Horton, a former pitcher and current radio broadcaster for Bud Sports.

“I’ve gotten to know Rick well enough now that I can pick up the telephone and call him.”

Dr. Cooper’s favorite player is Lou Brock and favorite person at the camp overall is Whitey Herzog, both of whom Dr. Cooper has followed since childhood, and now, knows personally.

The openness and accessibility of the Cardinals players and staff came as a surprise to Dr. Cooper during his early camp experience. As a child, Dr. Cooper remembers thinking, “If only I could meet (Lou) Brock or (Bob) Gibson… I had all these things I wanted to talk to them about.” He got

his chance two years ago, when Gibson sat directly in front of him during breakfast one morning. He recalled his astonishment when meeting Gibson for the first time.

“I can’t say a word!” Dr. Cooper remembers thinking in the presence of the Hall-of-Famer. “You’re speechless almost.

Unless you’re a baseball fan, you won’t understand it,” he explained.

Dr. Cooper has been interested in baseball for as long as he can remember and gets his Cardinals affinity from his family.

“My grandfather was a big Cardinals fan.

That’s what he did.”

Dr. Cooper looked forward to spending the night with his grandparents as an eight-year-old because they would allow him to stay up late and listen to Cardinals games on the radio. As a child and well into his adult life, he never dreamed he would meet and even become friends with some of the players. It was not until recently that he even learned about the camp opportunity. Interestingly, he heard about the camp at church.

Terry Rush, a minister from Tulsa, spoke at Dr. Cooper’s church one Wednesday evening. Dr. Cooper remembers Terry relaying his sadness over the one-year anniversary of the death of Cardinals sportscaster Jack Buck.

“I think Terry and I were the only people there that night that knew that,” Dr. Cooper recalled. “I thought, ‘This guy knows his Cardinal baseball.’”

During his sermon, Terry briefly mentioned the legends camp. Dr. Cooper introduced himself to Terry afterward and spoke with him about the camp. He told his wife, Paulette, about the opportunity but soon put it out of his mind. Paulette, knowing firsthand what a devout Cardinals fan Dr. Cooper is, pursued the idea and surprised him at Christmas with a trip to legends camp.

Terry and Dr. Cooper have since formed a close relationship and now meet to travel to camp together.

Not only do the campers look forward to the experience but the legends do, as well. Dr. Cooper asked Bob Forsch how they recruit enough legends to participate. Bob looked at Dr. Cooper and replied, “You’ve got to be kidding. We’ve got a waiting list. We love coming down here. We get to see our old teammates, put our uniforms back on, hang out in the clubhouse, and do things with baseball we haven’t done since we retired.”

This same spirit and sense of community is thriving in Dr. Cooper, who plans to attend legends camp as long as he is able.

By far, Dr. Cooper’s most cherished part of legends camp is the friendships. He, along with dozens of other men, share the same love of the Cardinals and the game of baseball.

“Every year I get to see those guys again and we get to play ball.” n

Health Careers Foundation (HCF) was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals to manage their Legends Camp held each year at the Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla. HCF is a not-for-profit organization assisting deserving individuals as they undertake their education in healthcare.

The organization was founded in 1990 by Health Services Corporation of America (HSCA) and the National Healthcare Coalition.

Since that time, more than 4,600 recipients have received nearly $10 million in financial aid in order to reach their dream career as a nurse, pharmacist or allied health professional.

The organization’s primary focus is to assist non-traditional students including older individuals, single parents and the unemployed, who might not have been able to continue their education without assistance.

All net proceeds from the St. Louis Cardinals Legends Camp provides education assistance to HCF award recipients in 49 states and the District of Columbia.

Several women in our community are what I would call true “Southern Ladies.”

They radiate poise and graciousness. I have often said when I grow up, I want to be just like them.

Well, reality has set in. I must face the fact that if it hasn’t happened at 44 years-ofage, then it is not going to happen. This sad realization hit me when I chose my topic for this month’s column. I am quite sure none of the previously-mentioned fine, Southern women would ever put something like what will follow into print.

In retrospect, I have covered several other topics in my column that would disqualify me from ever being considered a “Southern Lady.” Therefore, with out further adieu, let me forever solidify my place in the “impetuous woman” category and live happily ever after.

I warned you this is not lady-like material...

For those of you unfamiliar with “potty humor” let me offer a brief description.

All bodily noises, smells, and items that emanate from orifices of the body are at the top of the list. Following in a close second -anything that resembles bodily noises, smells, or items that emanate from orifices of the body.

If it’s gross then it is funny in my house.

Mothers of boys must surely feel my pain. If you are married, you probably feel my pain as well. My husband still finds flatulence funny, which just encourages the ridiculousness of my boys.

The dear women who have just given birth to a precious baby boy are thinking “not my child.” Enjoy that fantasy for as long as you can, because the first time he passes gas in the bathtub and makes bubbles, all hope is lost.

My dear sister was one of those “not my child” mothers. Bless her heart, she didn’t even want her boy to use the word 14 ABOUT...the River Valley

“boogers,” much less show the slimy green thing off to friends.

One day I asked her what we were supposed to call them.

She informed me they could be called “nasal secretions.”

Yeah, right.

What her son called them should have been the least of her worries. My children were experts at giving lessons in chasing someone around the house with a “nasal secretion” on the end of their finger.

They also took pleasure in determining who could sneeze the most “nasal secretions” on the other. Many times, I have panicked watching one of my boys race across the house. I was sure something must be terribly wrong due to their urgency.

To my great relief and disgust, I would hear an enormous sneeze followed by lots of laughter. Someone had just been showered with... let’s be honest... “snot.”

Now, these same young “men” -- who laugh hysterically at anything disgusting --continually tell me how grown up they are.

I am informed almost daily of their age and their need for more independence. I am accused almost as often of treating them like babies and interfering with their lives.

Now these same independent, selfsufficient “men” still need their mamma to buy their groceries, cook their meals, make their doctor appointments, wash their clothes, and make sure they have soap, shampoo, and toilet paper.

Well considering how well they relate to “potty humor,” I have come up with what I consider an appropriate response to all this “I-am-a-man-now business.”

My response: “As long as I still buy the toilet paper that wipes your behind, don’t tell me how grown up you are.”

They hate it when I launch into my little toilet paper triad. But seriously, I have been keeping their behinds clean in some way or another since the day they were born. The way I see it, until they are the only ones responsible for having a roll on that holder at six in the morning, they still have some growing up to do.

I have even pictured the moment in my mind when they will realize they are a “man.” It will go something like this: they will wake from a sound sleep, stumble to the bathroom, have a seat, do their business and reach for the toilet paper -only to discover it is empty. Then they start to call for mom and realize they are in their own home.

Perhaps then they will remember those endearing words from dear old mom, and think, “now I am a real man.” They will, of course, need to solve their dilemma on their own and get to the store!!!

Now that’s “potty humor” even I will find funny. I suppose that’s why my “Southern Lady” friends call me “highstrung and colorful.” n Despite recently becoming a “working mom,” Kechia Bentley still finds time to buy toiletries for her three “growing” sons and husband Donald.

Area bicycle enthusiasts will have an opportunity to participate in the Arkansas Wine Tour 100s planned for Saturday, May 3, 2008, beginning and ending on the square in Altus, AR. Pick your own pace as you ride through a panoramic tour of the scenic Arkansas Wine Country along the Arkansas River Valley. Areas along the various routes include Altus, Ozark, Paris, Subiaco, Scranton, Hartman, and Coal Hill. This mostly-flat ride has three routes – 100 miles, 100k (63 miles), and 17 miles.

Riders of the 17-mile ride will be treated to a champagne brunch sponsored by Post Familie Winery upon completion of the route.

A “sag wagon” will be available during registration to help with last minute repairs, and another will follow the tour. The course will close at 2 p.m. and after that time riders will be on their own.

The Arkansas Bike 100s Wine Tour coincides with the Altus Springtime Gala, an annual celebration of spring which also features a 5K run and fun walk, arts and crafts show, live entertainment, games, antique car and truck show, food booths, and more.

The AR Wine Tour event is under the direction of the Arkansas River Valley Circle of Friends, a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit chapter of the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. Eleven-year-old Cathy* had been shuffled from placement to placement a total of five times in three months. Removed from the home of her divorced parents, the youngster was sent to live in a Fort Smith shelter. After reportedly being approached by a staff member who tired to kiss her, she ran away.

A sixth grader on the street...

She was located and placed by a child protective services case worker, first in a Christian Shelter in Little Rock, then at Rivendale -- a behavorial health center -- for evaluation. Diagnosed with anger issues, Cathy was placed with another caregiver then assigned to live with a therapeutic foster family in Northwest Arkansas, miles away from where she once lived. Happily, her foster mother reports she is well-adjusted and doing well in school.

Five placements in three months. According to the Honorable Ken Coker, Circuit Judge for the 5th Judicial District Juvenile Court: “she didn’t even have time to unpack her suitcase.”

Whose Fault is it Anyway?

The fault may not lay with Child Protective Services -Department of Human Services caseworkers are overloaded and overworked. Most juggle as many as 32 cases at a time.

According to a former DHS case worker, 60-hour work weeks and 24/7 on-call are common. That can wreck their personal lives and jeopardize relationships with their own family.

The fault falls squarely on the parents of these neglected children. According to Genney Baker, executive director of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the 5th District, as many as 90% of the parents of children placed in the system are addicted to, or involved with, methamphetamines.

Between July 1 and June 30, 2007, 164 children were removed from homes in Pope, Johnson and Franklin Counties due to environmental conditions, neglect, abandonment and physical abuse, reported Baker.

“It’s an epidemic,” she confirms.

Baker, who started as a volunteer in 2001, had recently moved to Russellville from Seattle, Wash., with her husband and daughter. The family now includes three children.

“When I first started volunteering with CASA, I was dumbfounded on how many abused and neglected children there were in our community.,” recalled Baker.

“Over time, I saw first hand the difference CASA volunteers made in the lives of children in foster care. I knew this was a program I would be with for as long as they would have me.

Baker was hired as part-time coordinator for Pope County in 2003, began serving as Interim Director in March 2006 and was hired as Executive Director in May 2006.

Her first involvement with the CASA program was as a volunteer for three young sisters who had been removed from the home. Two of the youngest were adopted while the oldest “aged out” of the system at age 18 before permanent placement was arranged.

Like other volunteer advocates, Baker still keeps in touch with “her young lady.”

“I can’t call her a ‘kid’ anymore. She is now 22 years old, married, lives in Texas, and just had a baby boy.”

He is the father of three sons, yet has chaperoned a group of teens on a ski trip and coahces youth sports in addition to his court duties. He conducts “A Day in Juvenile Court” to educate local fifth graders about the legal system and to encourage them to stay out of trouble.

Jeff Faught, a Russellville attorney serves as the ad liteum for CASA. He represents children in dependencyneglect cases in the 5th Judicial District, and was named CASA’s Attorney and ad litem of the year in 2007 by the Arkansas State CASA Association.

“Jeff has a reputation for providing excellent legal advocacy to the kids he represents,” said Julianne Holloway, director of the Arkansas State Association. “He works diligently to improve the systmic processes that impact the lives of foster children.”

“Without Judge Coker and Jeff Faught, we couldn’t do what we do,” Baker said.

Within the 5th District, there are at least 40 children awaiting a CASA. “It is always heartbreaking not having a volunteer for a child that has just been removed from their home, family, friends, and often their school due to no fault of their own,” says Baker.

“Our goal is to have CASAs waiting for kids, not kids waiting for CASAs, says Baker.

While there is a huge need for additional CASA volunteers, Baker is quick to thank those who already give generously of their time and talent.

Heartbreaking research. Shattered childhoods. Irresponsible parents. No one tells the story better than the child advocates themselves...

“Shortly after I was appointed to advocate for Ryan*, I realized he was far from your average 8-year-old boy.

Most children his age wake up to the smell of pancakes or waffles. Not Ryan, before he was placed into foster care he would wake up to the smell of meth cooking and spend his days in the middle of his parent’s violent relationship.

I knew Ryan was now in a safe placement but would have many hurdles ahead of him. During my interview process, Ryan’s counselor left me short of breathe when he informed me Ryan had been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.

From there I spoke with his teacher and mother. It was clear to me the Ryan’s visits with his dad were detrimental to him. I immediately requested these visits be stopped.

Ryan no longer hides under tables with screams of fear or wakes trembling at night. Ryan’s mom amazed us all with her strength. She left Ryan’s father and turned her life around... Ryan is now at home with his mom.

“Ryan’s dad, the man who stole so much if his childhood, is rightfully serving his deserved time in prison. As for me, I knew I would be able to help make a difference in a child’s life, but I never knew what a difference they would make in mine.

Across the nation, more than 50,000 CASA volunteers advocated for 225,000 children in 2007 -- an impressive number yet just HALF of those in the child welfare system at any given time.

Children with a CASA are less likely to re-enter Child Services.

Foster Homes, Parents Needed There is also a huge need for foster homes for these children, many of whom are moved repeatedly from location to location, requested Baker.

“They need permanence, they need stability, care and understanding. They are the victims and yet they are the ones removed from their homes, school, family, friends, and are placed into a home or shelter with strangers with just a few of their own belongings. They often internalize the blame and carry the heavy guilt on their shoulders.”

Due to the lack of foster homes, sadly many children are not able to stay in the same foster home and once again have to adjust to a strange new place, and more often than not another new school.

“While their caseworkers and placements may change, their CASA remains the same,” added Baker.

“Our dedicated volunteers give these children a voice in court and strive to give them back hope. The work CASA volunteers do is priceless and will have an effect for generations to come.

Pickin’ at the Depot

Singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat, who scored an international hit with her single “Bubbly,” will appear in concert at Arkansas Tech University on Thursday, April 17.

Appetite Teasers Snack time, party time... anytime is great for appealing appetizers such as the ones included in this month’s issue.

Whether you call them “ hors d’oeuvres, antipasto, tapas or appetizers,” these small foods served before meals to whet the appetite play an important part in many cultures and cuisines. While the creations vary according to regional tastes, the history of offering appetizers before a meal varies.

Some food historians trace the practice back to the lavish banquets of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece. Others claim it is a relatively new idea, purporting the absence of “authentic” colonial American appetizers -- only variations adapted from certain recipes of the period.

While terminology differs, one factor remains the same. Many of the world’s great cuisines recognized that “dawdling” over small servings of different dishes while sharing news and recent discoveries lengthened a social evening and bonded friends together in the emotional way that only sharing a meal can allow.

SPINACH BALLS

1 10-oz pkg. frozen chopped spinach 1 ½ c. herb stuffing mix 3 well-beaten eggs ½ c. melted oleo or butter ¼ c. Parmesan cheese 1 medium onion, chopped ½ tsp. pepper ½ tsp garlic salt ¼ tsp. thyme Cook spinach according to directions.

Drain and squeeze out all moisture.

Combine with remaining ingredients and mix well. Shape into ¾ inch balls. At this point, balls can either be frozen or baked.

To bake, place on lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 325 degrees for 15-20 minutes. If frozen, thaw completely before baking. Makes 40-50 balls.

SEAFOOD LASAGNA ROLL-UPS

6 lasagna noodles 1 pkg. imitation crab 1 15-oz jar Healthy Choice extra chunky mushroom sauce 1 c. fat-free cottage cheese ¼ c. Parmesan cheese 1 egg 1 T. parsley ¼ tsp. onion powder Heat oven to 375 degrees. Boil noodles and drain. Let noodles sit in cold water while making the filing.

Shred crab meat and mix all other ingredients together. Place 1/3 c. across each noodle and roll up. Place seam side down in 9 x 9-inch dish. Top with sauce and bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes.

Garnish with parmesan cheese.

CUCUMBER SANDWICHES 1 loaf cocktail rye bread Light cream cheese 1 T. light mayo 1 pkg. Reanch party dip thinly sliced cucumbers

Soften cream cheese, combine 1 T. mayo and the packaged Ranch dip. Spread atop party cocktail bread and top off with thinly sliced cucumbers.

VELVEETA LOG

1 lb. Velvetta cheese 1 oz. soft cream cheese 1 2.2 oz. can green chilies, drained 1 2.2 oz. can black chopped olives 1 8-oz. can refried beans Thin layer of avocado dip Thin layer of sour cream Cheddar cheese, grated Chopped tomatoes Roll Velveeta cheese between 2 pieces of waxed paper as thinly as possible.

Spread in layers all ingredients in layer.

Then roll and pinch ends together as much as possible. Put on tray, serve with crackers or chips.

1 large tub Cool Whip 3 graham cracker crusts 2 c. pecans 8 oz. crushed pineapple (drain well) 1/3 c. lemon juice 1 can sweetened condensed milk Whip together Cool Whip and condensed milk. Drain pineapple and add lemon juice. Mix until creamy. Add pecans. Pour into graham cracker crusts. Refrigerate 3 to 4 hours.

PEKING MEATBALLS

1 ½ lbs. ground beef ½ lb. ground pork ½ c. bread crumbs ¼ c. milk 1 egg 4 T. chopped fresh parsley 1 tsp. salt ¼ tsp. pepper ½ tsp. Worcestershire sauce Mix ingredients together well. Make 1-inch balls and brown in 350 degree oven about 20 to 25 minutes, turning often.

Sauce: Heat the following until melted – 12 oz. chili sauce and 12-oz. jar grape jelly.

Add the meatballs and cook over low heat.

Add 1 tsp. lemon juice before serving.

STUFFED MUSHROOMS 24 oz. fresh mushrooms 12 oz. tomato sauce 2 c. dry vermouth Garlic salt 1 lb. fresh Italian sausage

Wash and dry mushrooms, snap out stems (set stems aside.) Stuff the mushroom caps with raw Italian sausage. Place stuffed mushrooms on cookie sheet with sides.

Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Baking the mushrooms first sets the sausage, so it stays in the mushrooms.

While the mushrooms are baking, combine tomato sauce, vermouth, garlic salt to taste and mushroom stems (sliced.)

Remove mushrooms from the oven and place them in the sauce. Simmer for 2-3 hours until thickened.

SMALL PARTY RYES

1 pkg. small party rye bread 8 to 10 oz. shredded cheddar cheese 3 green onions, chopped 1 2.5 oz. can chopped black olives 2 to 3 oz. mayonnaise Mix cheese, onions, olives and mayonnaise. Place party rye bread on cookie sheet. Put a teaspoon of mixture on each slice of bread. Bake in oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes or until bubbly.

There are moments in life when persistence is the most important quality a person can have.

As a non-traditional student making a second attempt at college during the late 1980s, Paul Gray had one of those moments.

“I went to Arkansas Tech when I was a young man, and I didn’t do too well,” said Gray. “So I worked for a while and then went into the U.S. Army. After that, I decided to come back to Tech, but I had this really bad grade point average. I was embarrassed about it. So I took the first step toward trying to get back into school, and the first person I visited with was not very pleasant. I was devastated, and I almost drove away.

“But I had another appointment,” continued Gray. “I don’t know what would have happened to my life if I had driven away, but I decided to go ahead to Dr. Bill Seidensticker’s office for the appointment. He sat me down, and he told me that he could always spot someone who had become a disciple and decided they wanted to come back to school.

“He said that my transcript was kind of a mess, but that we could fix it. So, I went from almost not going to that appointment to it becoming a life-changing experience.”

It was Gray’s first step toward earning two college degrees and establishing a career as a geography teacher at Russellville High School.

In December 2007, almost 20 years after that fateful day at Dr. Seidensticker’s office, Gray was named Arkansas Teacher of the Year by the Arkansas Department of Education during a ceremony at the State Capitol.

“Dedicated, innovative teachers are the backbone of our schools,” said Gov. Mike Beebe following the announcement. “Mr. Gray epitomizes the qualities that we should demand in all of our teachers.”

Gray, who earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1992 and his Master of Education degree in 1998 from Arkansas Tech, is in his 15th year on the faculty at Russellville High School.

“The positive side of the award is that it has been wonderful to be recognized for the things that you do,” said Gray.

“The part that I would really like to change is that there are a lot of teachers (at Russellville High School), in this district and in this state that do the same things that I’m doing. They work hard, they stay late and they’d do anything to help kids, but they’re not recognized for it. It’s been a wonderful experience on many levels and I look forward to fulfilling this thing that has happened to me.

“But at the same time, they were reading all about the 11 other nominees right after I received the award, and they were all remarkable. I was just wondering, ‘Why me?’ It has been rewarding, but it has been very humbling.”

Gray’s ties to education and Arkansas Tech University run deep. His father, Paul Gray Sr., graduated from Tech with a degree in music education in 1962 and went on to serve as a band director for 37 years. His mother attended Tech, and the late Johnny Paul Thaxton, past president of the Arkansas Tech Alumni Association and longtime educator, was his second cousin.

Today, in addition to his teaching duties at Russellville High School, Gray serves as a visiting lecturer in the Arkansas Tech Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy. His connections to Tech were made even stronger in 2007 when he married Beth Wilson, a faculty member in the Arkansas Tech Department of Emergency Administration and Management.

“Tech’s in my blood,” said Gray. “My father got in trouble with Gene Witherspoon because he showed up for band practice on the day that my mother was in labor with me. Mr. Witherspoon sent him packing toward Saint Mary’s Hospital to be with my mom, but dad was too scared to not at least show up for band practice. We lived in Turrentine Apartments on the Tech campus for the first year of my life, and now I teach at Tech, my wife teaches at Tech and we’ve got a Tech license plate. Tech really does course through my veins.”

In addition to Dr. Seidensticker, Gray noted Dr. Patricia Roach, Dr. Elizabeth Salmeri, Mr. Bobby Taylor and Mr. David Krueger among the many professors who made a significant impact on him during his days as a student at Tech.

“I still tell my students, everyone has to take a history class to graduate, and you haven’t had the full Arkansas Tech experience until you have taken a class under Professor Krueger,” said Gray.

Teaching, however, has not been Gray’s only pursuit in life. He was a member of the Russellville City Council from 2002-2004, and he remains a prominent face on the local political scene as one of three hosts for the television program “Equal Time,” which airs weekly on Suddenlink Cable Channel 6 in Russellville.

“I found out that politics is not something I want to live every day,” said Gray, “but I learned more from being on the (Russellville City Council) for two years than I ever could in a classroom. I had the book learning and I received a great education at Tech, so I had a good understanding of how the system works. But when I got in the middle of all that and the human interactions that I had through that experience, I learned a lot that I was able to bring back to the classroom.

“I learned about zoning codes and laws that the average person might not ever encounter unless they become involved in them,” continued Gray. “I was able to see how the Americans with Disabilities Act works.

“And now, with the TV show, we have these people from throughout the community on as guests. Just a few weeks ago we had the coroner on, and I had no idea what all was involved with that job. It is all very useful in helping students understand how and where politics meets geography.”

During the 2008-09 academic year, Gray will have an opportunity to participate in the political process that influences education.

As Arkansas Teacher of the Year, he will

have a voice in meetings that will help determine policy for school districts and students all over the state.

“The legislature will be in session next year, so I will try to use my position to make some inroads there once my sabbatical begins in August,” said Gray. “I’ll be a nonvoting member of the Arkansas Board of Education, so I’ll be going to those meetings and will have an opportunity to offer my input from a teacher’s perspective.

“I am a member of the Arkansas Geographical Alliance, and I plan to use some of my year promoting geographic literacy. We just don’t know where things are, and in this world we live in, people have to know about other cultures and other religions. We have to know why people are angry at us or why they are our friends.”

However, Gray said that he will miss the chance to teach high school students those lessons on a daily basis.

“I’m apprehensive about it, because I’m not sure what I would do if I couldn’t teach,” said Gray. “I’m not sure I would be good at much of anything else. So, I’m a little bit scared about that. The saving grace is that I will have my night class at Tech both semesters, so I will get to teach.”

The other good news for Gray is that when he returns to his Russellville High School classroom full-time in the fall of 2009, there will be a new group of students and new opportunities to teach, shape and mold.

“I used to come out to Tech and talk to a beginning education class every year, and I would always start by telling them that I get paid $1 million a year,” said Gray.

“I told them that about $40,000 of it comes from the district, and the other $960,000 or so comes from the little notes or e-mails when a former student tells me that I made them want to become a teacher, I made them want to major in geography or I made a difference in their lives. That’s what makes it all worth it. That’s the reward.” n

ABOUT It’s Spring...

Think GREEN! Tech Plant Sale celebrates 25 Years

For more than two decades, area gardening enthusiasts have planned their spring plant purchases around the annual TECH Agriculture Department Spring Plant Sale. And, during this 25th anniversary year, regular visitors will be shopping at the new Arkansas Tech University greenhouses located north of the ATU campus of at Red Hill Farm.

This sale will begin 8 a.m. and last until 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 11-12. This the 25th year that popular event has been held under supervision of horitculturist Dr. Jim Collins and the Agriculture Department.

According to Collins, this year’s annual event will be held in the new greenhouses, located just west of the old ones. The location will be clearly marked by lots of posted signs. Students will be available to direct visitors, as well.

“The new and expanded greenhouse space will be a welcome surprise to many of our loyal customers,” said Collins. “This is a big and fun event that the public seems to both enjoy and support.”

According to Collins, “Plant growing is used as a learning experience for the horticulture classes taught in the agri-business department, and the prices are always good!”

Offered for sale will be flowering bedding plants, tomato, pepper, squash, cucumber and watermelon transplants, azaleas, crape myrtles, and other shrubbery plants, plus hanging baskets and houseplants.

The organization hosts an annual Poinsettia Sale at the Tech greenhouses in late November.

Gardening IN THE GARDEN

April is one of the prettiest months in the garden. From spring blooming azaleas and dogwoods, to flowering bulbs there is a sea of color in most landscapes. Make sure your landscape is not a oneseason wonder. With all the plants available to us, there are good choices for all seasons.

When your spring blooming shrubs have finished their display, that is the time to do any necessary pruning. Remember that not all shrubs need annual pruning. Azaleas can be pruned hard if necessary, but do so as soon after flowering as possible. That will give them a better chance of quick recovery.

Follow up your pruning activity with an application of azalea fertilizer.

When pruning azaleas, selectively prune to each branch.

Forsythia, Hydrangeas Cane producing shrubs that need pruning should have older canes removed at the soil line. Forsythias benefit annually with the removal of one third of the older canes. This method of pruning is referred to as rejuvenation pruning - allowing young, vigorous new growth to begin at the base of the plants.

You should be seeing new growth on all your shrubs and trees. If there is still any damage from last years growing season, now is time to prune it out.

If your hydrangeas were winter damaged, you will see growth appearing from the base of the plant versus the old wood. Prune only if you know the canes are dead.

Roses Roses are blooming now and definitely growing. Prune climbers after their first flush of flowers later this month or in May. Remove some of the older, longer canes close to the main trunk.

If you have varieties that are susceptible to black spot, your spraying season should have already begun. The key to blackspot control is prevention. One or two applications will not do the trick. Fertilize them monthly and monitor for insects as well.

If you don’t want to spray, consider planting some of the antiques or environmentally friendly roses: Knock-outs, Flower Carpet and New Dawn are just a few good choices.

From 5 to 7 p.m. join staff for a Sunset Kayak Tour. “The weather is warming up, and we’re going to see what’s emerging on the banks of Lake Dardanelle. We’ll be paddling our kayaks through some seldom closely seen shoreline of this beautiful 34,000 acre lake,” said Mascuilli.

“Sign up at the visitor center (479-967-5516) at least one day in advance.

The fee is $12 for adults, $6 for children 6-12 years old, 5 years and under ride free when with an adult. Please specify when you sign up if you want a tandem (2 person) or solo kayak.”

“Who Goes There?” will begin at 5 to 6 p.m. on Friday, April 18, at the amphitheater.

Discover the many creatures that call Lake Dardanelle home, find out who they are and what clues they leave behind as they move about.

“After looking through the clues we will head down the trail and see if we discover any new clues and find out, who goes there,” said staff members.

“Over the Moon,” begins at 8:30 p.m. in the grassy field across from the swim beach. Guests will look into the moonlight and explore the surface of the moon without our feet ever leaving the earth. They will also get a good look at the red planet; Mars will be at its closet proximity to Earth.

On Saturday, April 19, enjoy a game of “Wildflower Bingo.” Starting at 3:30, guests are invited to join a park interpreter at the amphitheater by campsite area D for some old fashioned Bingo, with a twist. By the end of each round, participants will have discover a new wildflower found here in Arkansas. The entire family, young and old, are invited to enjoy this relaxing game for all ages.

“Owl Prowl” will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the amphitheater. Learn about the silent hunters that come out when the sun goes down.

Participants will discuss some of the unique features and then walk the Meadowbrook Trail as they try to catch a glimpse of these stealthy raptors.

What will you be today? “Oh the Places You Will Go,” begins at 6 p.m. in the weighin pavilion. Discover what makes the aquatic mammals perfectly suited for their life building dams and swimming in the river.

Guests will learn what is needed to survive life as a beaver.

Join a park interpreter at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, for a Nature Scavenger Hunt beginning at the visitor’s center.

Participants are invited to see how many of the items on the interpreter’s list that can found in the park.

“There will be some interesting things on her list, so bring your thinking cap; be ready to get creative with your answers, and let’s go nature hunting,” said Mascuilli.

That evening, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the amphitheater, discover some of the things that make Lake Dardanelle State Park such a wonderful place to visit. “75 Great Things about Lake Dardanelle” will help guests celebrate 75 years of “Making Memories.”

Staten crowned Miss Tech 2008 Cheryl Staten, a senior health information management major from Cabot, was crowned Miss Tech 2008 during the 53rd Miss Arkansas Tech University Scholarship Pageant at Witherspoon Auditorium.

With the title, Staten wins a two-semester scholarship to Arkansas Tech, more than $4,000 in prizes and gift certificates and the right to represent Tech in the 2008 Miss Arkansas Pageant.

“I’m very excited,” said Staten. “I’ve been trying to win Miss Tech since I was a freshman, and I’m glad this moment is here. I am very proud to go forward and represent Tech to the best of my ability.”

Staten is the daughter of Connie and Tim Leonard and Ron Staten. Her talent was a vocal performance of “I Am Changing.” Encouraging others to get fit is her critical issue.

Staten was victorious in the lifestyle, fitness and swimsuit competition and the CenturyTel Interview competition.

Shanna Collins of Pottsville, winner of the Nona Dirksmeyer Talent Award for her vocal performance of “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” was first runner-up. The top five included: Savanna Knight of Charleston, second runner-up; Ashlei Harris of Little Rock, third runner-up, and Sarah Kesner of Fort Smith, fourth runner-up. A total of 11 contestants entered the 2008 Miss Tech Pageant, which was attended by a capacity crowd.

Knight was recognized for giving the best dance performance. She also won the Ray Moll Community Service Award and the Leslie Miller Leadership Award.

Kesner won the audience appeal award. TraNita Scott of North Little Rock was voted Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants, and Charlotte Moore of Conway took the Virginia Bachman Scholastic Achievement Award.

Katie Bailey of Conway, Miss Arkansas 2007, and Leslie Miller of Clarksville, Miss Tech 2007, provided special entertainment during the pageant. Also performing was Gina Parker, a member of the Arkansas Tech staff and the fourth runner-up in the 2007 Miss Arkansas Pageant.

They run errands for an ill patient, they do yard work, they pick up a few groceries... and sometimes they hold the hand of someone as they draw their last breath.

Volunteers serving with the Arkansas Department of Health Hospice are many things to many people. Described as angels by some, friends by others, these generous individuals give what others may not -- the chance for an individual to spend their last days surrounded by the familiarity of home and family.

Malana Shumaker of Pottsville, and her late husband Donald, were two such “angels.” Malana, originally from Houston, spent her career years as an accountant for two different firms. Originally from Houston,

she returned with her husband to live on the family farm in his hometown of Pottsville.

The couple volunteered with hospice beginning in 1996.

Together, the Shumakers continued their work with hospice because it “was warm and fuzzy. It makes you feel good, helping others with life’s most difficult journeys,” explained Mrs. Shumaker. They served as one of a few volunteer couples until he became ill in 1998. Then, hospice became very personal for Malana.

With her husband’s illness, she became the recipient of services -- returning later as a volunteer to once again ‘give back to others.’ She currently assists hospice with in-office needs.

Glenda Luter is one of three original volunteer coordinators that began with the Arkansas Department of Health Hospice in 1992. She shares her responsibilities with another volunteer coordinator, Marian Henderson. Their responsibilities include recruiting and retaining volunteers, arranging continuing education, needs assessment of patients, assigning volunteers to patients and supervising those assignments, and lastly, coming up with fund-raising ideas to benefit the program and meet unfunded needs.

They arrange training sessions for the volunteers, reviewing philosophies, roles, responsibilities and duties of the hospice volunteer. On the 4th Monday of each month, they arrange continuing education classes geared to the needs of the volunteer.

The pair is responsible for educating the community about the hospice program.

This can often include giving speeches to civic and religious organizations, manning booths at the county fairs and distributing flyers to area churches. As part of the Northwest Regional Office originating from Russellville, their efforts cover eight local counties and offices. They include Conway, Faulkner, Johnson, Logan/Booneville, Logan/Paris, Perry, Pope, Scott, Yell/ Dardanelle and Yell/Danville.

The Division of Health Hospice is truly a non-profit program, offering care regardless of an individuals ability to pay. They are part of the Arkansas Division of Heath and have an average of one nurse to every six to eight patients. They offer local, licensed social workers that can be assigned to each patient as needed.

A common misconception is that hospice is only for “end-of-life” care but that is not true, said Luter. She recalled one patient that entered hospice care, improved, then was released to live on her own again. This happened three times before the 90-plusyear-old woman passed away.

That woman was the grandmother of Paula Lowe, another hospice volunteer.

Despite her job as business manager for Pottsville Schools, Paula still finds volunteering an extremely rewarding responsibility. She has been a regular volunteer since 2003.

Patient confidentiality is an absolute must.

Luter explains: “I’ve had people say, ‘I saw you at so-and-so’s house, are they ill?’ and my pat answer has always been: ‘I’m sure they’d love for you to call and check on them.’”

“Even before the HIPA laws, we respected the rights and privacy of those under our care,” she explained.

Lowe acknowledged the privacy issue.

“I sat with a patient for two-and-a-half years and even my husband, Mel, didn’t know who it was. We never discussed the situation. If I left to volunteer with someone, he always knew I was doing something important and would be with ‘my patient.’”

Different Times, Different Needs People enter the program at different stages and have different needs.

“We prefer for the family members to bond with the caregiver while their patient is still living,” said Luter.

“Not everyone needs all of our available services,” she added. “We offer a variety of services but they pick and choose what they need.”

While one family may need care during a loved one’s last days, other families may not enter the program until the bereavement period has already begun. A volunteer will be assigned to the family as long as they want assistance, often for at least a year.

Luter calls it a “basket of services” from which they may pick and choose and “put back” when a certain service is no longer needed. “It depends on what they need or want,” she adds. Available are homebased care, nursing home care, respite care and acute hospital care through those individuals and services associated with ADHH Heath Hospice.

Referrals may come from a social worker, a nurse or physician, hospital discharge personnel, a family friend or through personal request.

The Arkansas Department of Health Hospice, through its volunteer coordinators, maintains a roster of volunteers. Each completes a questionnaire determining service locale and ability to travel. If Luter does not have a suitable local volunteer, she will call one who is willing to travel.

From the list of 55 to 60 volunteers, Luter says she accepts only two answers when calling to serve a family.

“Those answers are ‘yes’ and ‘no.’ I know they have lives and needs of their own.

Some need a break now and then, and it’s perfectly fine, whatever their response,” said Luter.

The length of time a volunteer spends with a patient varies from two to 24 hours, depending on the situation and the amount of time a volunteer is willing to give.

There is little volunteer turn-over, said Luter. “These individuals become our family and friends. I’ve made so many friends over the past 15 years. Our volunteers are the cream of the crop.”

The volunteer coordinators meet every two weeks for a networking InterDisciplinary Group discussion where needs are identified and discussed.

Joining them is Dr. Stan Bradley, Russellville physician who serves as the ADHH medical director.

“Dr. Bradley is one of the very few physicians in the state to be Board Certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine,” said Luter.

“He is an expert in pain control and is available to our nurses and a patient’s physicians to help in their care.”

The hospice team from all eight counties attend and may include registered nurses from the local health unit who are specially trained in Hospice, nurses aides who are skilled in end-of-life care, licensed social workers who care for the emotional needs of their patients and assist them in finding financial resources, and trained Chaplains.

“There are so many indirect ways for individuals to volunteer besides sitting with a patient. We have so many needs -- office work, computer needs, someone to put together a newsletter... maybe someone to help make our fair boards,” outlined Luter.

“We are willing to accept any amount of time someone is willing to give.”

Although the volunteer coordinators are officially “in the office” two or three days per week, Luter said they are available 24/7 by cell phone.

“Our volunteers are very important to us.

They are very giving of their time, and I want them to know they can call me anytime.”

Luter says she tries to give back to the volunteers in small ways, such as taking them to lunch on their birthday. As a whole, the volunteers are honored with certificates and recognition following National Volunteer month each April.

Historic District Commission Appointed Ann Irwin, a property owner residing in Russellville’s Old Town Neighborhood, was selected as the chairwoman of the newly-formed Russellville Historic District Commission (HDC.) Suzanne AlfordHodges, downtown business owner and Old Town Neighborhood resident, was elected vice chairman of the ninemember committee.

According to standards established by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, a mayor or county judge may appoint five to nine members to serve on a historic district commission. Their appointment is subject to approval by the governing body, which in this case is the Russellville City Council.

Commissioners must be residents of the city or county they will be serving and may not be elected officials or employees of that city or county. Commissioners serve staggered three-year terms.

In addition to Irwin and Alford-Hodges, recently appointed members include: downtown business and property owner R. D. Walker, owner of C&D Drug; preservationist Judy Galloway, whose residence and business are located in historic homes on West Main Street in Russellville; R.E. Hodges, current president of Old Town Neighborhood Association, and Jami Mullen, business owner and current president of the Russellville Downtown Association and a homeowner of historic property in the Old Town Neighborhood.

Also appointed were Main Street Russellville board president Linda Carnahan and Jason Hann, Old Town Neighborhood resident who was selected to serve as

the committee’s “at-large” member. Steve Newby, a local photographer who moved to Russellville several years ago after working within a local historic district in Dallas, fills the final seat on the commission.

Commissioners resolved to begin with the Downtown Historic District as it can be easily submitted as an overlay of the Downtown area that is already listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The commission met recently to discuss a number of other organizational issues, which included the election of a chairperson and vice chairperson, the establishment of a monthly meeting time, and future survey and nomination of the Old Town Neighborhood for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as inclusion in the local ordinance historic district that would be overseen by the HDC. Additional district nominations to be considered are the City (Oakland) Cemetery as well as a potential cluster of historic homes on West Main.

Note: To gain Certified Local Government (CLG) status, the district must overlay the National Register District or be approved by petition, by 51% or more of property owners.

CLG training will be held in New Orleans, La., in July. A CLG quarterly meeting will be held Aug. 2-3 in El Dorado.

The new appointees were encouraged to take advantage of these upcoming training opportunities by Boyd Mayer, representative of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, who was present at the March 12th meeting. n

Despite two record March snowfalls within the same week, merchants participating in the recent Downtown Russellville Wedding Walk offered, instead, a week’s opportunity for participants to visit and register for more than $3,500 prizes. The prize drawing was held Friday, March 14, at the Historic Missouri-Pacific Depot.

Despite this year’s unusual chain of circumstances prior to the planned March 7th, merchants considered the first-time event a success.

“In response to the Winter Storm Warnings for our area and in concern for the safety of our Wedding and Art Walk guests, an Inclement Weather plan was implemented,” said Betsy McGuire, Main Street Russellville director.

JA Ball: Successful Sell-out The annual Junior Auxiliary Charity Ball continually proves what a caring and generous community this is, say organizers. With a record sell-out crowd of 375 guests and more than $77,000 in net revenue, “Feng Shui” was a huge success.

According to Angela Bonds and Suzanne Gately, this year’s finance cochairs, the event was a wonderfully fun and successful evening. Held Saturday, Feb. 23, at Hughes Center in Russellville, the popular fundraiser generates monies used for a number of year-long projects designed to help meet the needs of area children.

A live and silent auction, along with a large portion of funds donated in advance by friends and supporters though the Friends of JA program, contributed to the success of the evening.
