Behind the art scenes Every weekend in June, a group of artists open their doors and welcome guests to visit them in their painting dens, creative spaces, potteries and ink stained garden sheds as part of Suffolk Open Studios. We get a sneak preview of what to expect behind the scenes at their Showcase Exhibition. Suffolk Open Studios (SOS) has been part of the artistic calendar for nearly thirty years as it was first started in 1991 by a small group of friends who thought it would be fun to open their studios to the public. Since then, the number of artists, makers and galleries wishing to be involved in this creative collaboration has risen to well over a hundred and it is wonderful to see so many gathered at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds for the exhibition. The work 4
on display is as varied and interesting as the artists themselves, and the show was officially opened by emerging new talent Ania Hobson, 2018 Winner of the Young Artist Award, BP Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery, who is a great supporter of the organisation. SOS is run by volunteers, usually artists or art lovers, and I get an opportunity to talk with its chairperson, Cally James, herself an accomplished ceramicist. â€œ2019 is an
exciting year for Suffolk Open Studios as our open event runs for 5 weekends in June, giving visitors even more opportunity to browse studios and interact with artists.” She explains that any artist living or working in Suffolk can become a member, as long as they are able to open their studio for at least one weekend in June, and although entry for this year’s event is now closed, you can still become an associate member and have a presence on the SOS website. There is also the option to sign up as Friend of SOS which means that you will receive a copy of the Directory and be invited to any exhibitions held by members during the year. At the exhibition I chat to both long standing members and also new recruits, such as Astra Taylor-Todd, whose striking monochrome illustration of a gorilla has been chosen as the new front cover of
the 2019 Directory, and all agree that it is lovely to have the opportunity to meet fellow artists and to feel supported and encouraged in their work. As the evening progresses and the chatter levels rise, I take a closer look at the art on display and am impressed by the quality and the variety of the work. Ink line drawings sit comfortably between oil landscapes and bold abstracts, fresh watercolours are complemented by mixed media studies, and delicate glassware reflects the bold outlines of contemporary sculpture. This is just a taster of what will be on show in June, and I can’t wait to see what creativity lies behind all those studio doors, normally closed to the public, and to have the unique opportunity of watching the artists as they work on their next masterpieces. When I spoke to Carl Scott of Woodfarm Barns two years ago he was toying with the idea of buying a barge. Carl is not someone who does things by halves, therefore I was not surprised to learn that he is now the proud owner of not one, but two Dutch sailing barges! I meet Carl at Woodbridge Quay to hop aboard the smaller of the two barges, Twee Gebroeders. It has a wonderful mooring overlooking the historic Tide Mill and sits at the end of a row of other barges that are mostly ‘live aboard’ houseboats. Twee Gebroeders, which means two brothers in English, sleeps four, with a double berth to the bow and a cosy twin bedroom to the centre, both with traditional white wooden panelling and crisp white linen. However, the best thing about the living space is the saloon, which has fitted teak work units hand-crafted by a local furniture maker and topped with granite, a beautiful bright red
range cooker and a dining table where guests can enjoy breakfast looking out at the ever-changing view of the River Deben. Steps up from the galley lead to a wooden deck with built in seating and although it is March, the sun shines down as we chat, and it is not hard to imagine yourself sat here watching the setting sun and raising a glass to a passing swan or flotilla of inquisitive ducks. Carl was offered this barge in June 2017 and by pure chance a second, larger barge caught his eye at the same time. Never one to shy away from a challenge – he is currently renovating an 19
old farmhouse in Tuscany â€“ Carl decided to buy them both and rent them out as part of his dog-friendly holiday letting business. Luckily, both barges had already been extensively restored and so by the end of that summer they were available to rent and are proving to be very popular, especially with local people who are looking for something just a little bit different. The second barge, Onderneming, is moored over at Snape Maltings, so we return to dry land and drive over to take a look. It sits on the banks of the River Alde, with the Maltings to one side and the shimmering reed beds to the other and is totally in keeping with the setting as, in years gone by, barges similar to Onderneming would have been used to ship barley and malt up
and down the river. As I navigate the gang plank, I realise what a beast of a barge Onderneming is. At 100ft long and 18ft wide and with three double cabins, three bathrooms, two saloons, one of which was originally the wheelhouse, and two galley kitchens, she is truly magnificent and has bespoke timber panelling and traditional porthole windows. The lower saloon has slouchy leather sofas and a wood-burning stove, making it wonderfully warm and cosy, and the boat is flooded with natural light from large windows on all sides and a skylight that would have originally been the grain hatch. As I stand looking up it is hard to imagine that at one time this whole space would have been full to the brim with malt destined for the breweries of London, but you can still see the cast iron trusses that would have supported the weight of the
cargo, and to the stern there is a small room where the skipper would have bunked for the night â€“ now a hidey hole for the children to explore. Up on deck I take the wheel and Carl explains that he had to sail her here from the dry dock at Maldon, a two-day trip with some rather challenging manoeuvres, to make sure she settled in exactly the right place. Interested passers-by stop and ask questions and I have to resist the urge to put on my best pirate accent and greet them with â€˜Ahoy me heartiesâ€™! Many high tides ago I used to live on a barge moored on the River Thames, and normally just the piping call of a greenshank is enough to transport me back there, so being here on the barge I feel right at home. Carl says that guests have seen seals in the river, chasing small
fish through the shallows, and the reed beds are a haven for a huge number of birds, including the unmistakeable blue flash of the kingfisher and the swooping dive of the marsh harrier. Right on cue, a little egret lands by the reeds on the other side of the river and tiptoes along the edge, its long feet feeling for small invertebrates hiding beneath the mud. This is a wonderful location and both barges are unique, interesting places to stay. They are also great fun and so I encourage you to embrace your inner pirate and jump aboard. woodfarmbarges.com

Reassuring growth at The Worry Tree Café It’s been a busy few months for the team at The Worry Tree Café with the opening of their site in Leiston, as well as preparing to open in Martlesham, Cambridge, Swansea and potentially, other locations in the region. visitors and volunteers made the trip to London to be on Channel Five’s Do The Right Thing, which culminated in the donation of a ‘Worry Wagon’ from their ‘Secret Millionaire’. Unfortunately, when the Worry Wagon was delivered to Hour Community HQ it was deemed unroadworthy, and with no solution to date, the charity is

Set in the heart of the Suffolk countryside, Kingfishers, Cretingham has reopened as an idyllic 120-acre country park with woodland walks, an 18-hole golf course and a wonderful open-plan family friendly restaurant. I take a stroll with owners Matthew and Claire Thacker to find out what they love about their new park life. Claire and Matthew bought the golf course back in December 2017, and in that time have set about transforming it into a relaxing country club where family and friends can meet for a drink, enjoy a round of golf or come for a bite to eat, whether it be breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea or an evening meal. They were living in Leeds when they first saw the details from the estate agent and although they werenâ€™t specifically looking at golf clubs, they were familiar with Suffolk having spent a summer exploring Aldeburgh and Framlingham,
and so decided it was worth strapping their young son Ralph into the car seat and taking a trip. Claire says she can remember turning in the driveway and just getting a feeling about the place. â€œWe just sort of knew. It immediately felt right; we loved the beautiful setting and could see the potential that the space offered us.â€? At the time, Claire was working as a consultant in London, employed by companies who needed to turn their fortunes around. Her honest and direct 31

approach earned her a reputation for delivering results, and this ability to see the best possible solution to any problem has held her in good stead with the management of this new venture. For many local people, myself included, Cretingham Golf Club was well known for sunny afternoons on the course and private parties dancing the night away, and Claire and Matthew want to build on this to create a country park where everyone is welcome. They have invested not just their money but also their time and energy into delivering the personal vision of what they saw when they first visited â€“ and this is a vision that is open to all, whether you are a golfer or not. As we take a look around it is evident that everything has been done to a very high
standard. The clubhouse has been beautifully refurbished to create a wonderfully light, open plan restaurant with panoramic views of the course and a wood-burning stove at its heart. Outside, the old tennis court has been landscaped to create a sheltered courtyard with childrenâ€™s play area where families can relax and enjoy open-fired pizzas, and the lodges have all been revamped allowing guests to indulge in a hot tub out on the deck whilst enjoying the wide expanse of the Suffolk skies. The setting of the course is idyllic, and Matthew has been working hard with their green keepers to make sure that the 18-hole course is up to par. They have also planted new trees throughout the park, put up nesting boxes and opened up the woodland area to create a series of nature walks.

It has been a busy year but there are no signs of slowing down. Claire explains that they have a structured programme of investment which will allow them to continue to develop and improve the visitor experience at Kingfishers. In May, a new Lakeside Spa offering a range of luxury treatments and classes such as pilates and yoga is set to open and they are about to launch a new take-away menu that will include pizzas, wok dishes and tempting sides such as garlic and rosemary bread, skinny fries and coleslaw. There will be summer programme which will include special offers such as ‘Lazy Lunch’ – one course with a glass of wine for £10 or ‘Friday Fun’ – free buggy hire with every four ball, and Claire has also planned a series of holiday camps where children can have fun trying archery, golf and learning to master a BMX.
Their enthusiasm is infectious, and I can’t wait to walk down with the dogs on a summer’s evening to enjoy a glass of wine and some supper before wandering home, but I wonder if Claire and Matthew ever get time to enjoy it themselves. “There is something very special about the atmosphere here and we still love to walk the course, especially first thing in the morning when there are fewer people about. It always feels so tranquil and peaceful, and down by the pond, if we are lucky, we sometimes see a kingfisher, which we feel is our personal symbol of good luck for the future.” www.kingfisherscretingham.co.uk

A millerâ€™s tale 36
Overlooking the shallow creeks of the Deben, the iconic silhouette of Woodbridge Tide Mill has been part of the Suffolk landscape for centuries. One of the last working tidal mills in the country, I chat to head miller, Dan Tarrant-Willis, to find out why he loves this daily grind. Dan has been a miller here for the past four years and is part of a team of forty volunteers who help run, maintain and operate the Tide Mill, which is open to the public everyday from April through to the beginning of October. Stepping inside is like stepping back in time and I can easily imagine the hustle and bustle of workers running up and down between the floors as sacks of wheat are hoisted to the top and poured into the wooden chutes that lead down to the enormous millstones below; the air being thick with flour and the voices of men hard at work. It is still very much a working mill, with regular milling
and wheel turning demonstrations and although none are planned for today, Dan is only too happy to show me how the mill works and to explain the beautiful simplicity of being able to harness the energy of the moonâ€™s gravitational forces. We go out onto the decking and round to the small millpond, which sits to the side of the mill and is fundamental to the whole milling process. Every high tide, water enters the pond via an inlet pipe with a one-way valve, meaning that the water is then trapped once the tide retreats. At low tide this water is at a higher level than the 37
receding river and therefore, once the sluice gates within the mill are opened, it rushes out causing the huge wooden waterwheel to turn. As Dan turns the handle, he explains that originally the millpond covered 7-acres, including where the yacht marina is now located, and this larger volume of water would have allowed them to mill for 4 hours each low tide. Suddenly there is a roar as the seawater forces its way through the gap and I watch as the wheel starts to rotate and then engage via a wooden shaft to another smaller wheel, known as the pit wheel, further in. This in turn engages with a cast iron wheel called a wallower, which transfers the power upwards via a vertical shaft to the spur wheel.
We return inside to watch this magnificent feat of engineering in action and I can now see that this spur wheel is connected to spindles that turn the two upper runner stones, and it is these that grind the wheat as they revolve over the static bed-stones. It is a fascinating process and I love the fact that millers have been milling grain on this site since 1170. As well as being party to the ebb and flow of the tides over the centuries, the mill has also seen many owners, including Woodbridge Priory, the royal lineage of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I, who then gifted it to Thomas Seckford in 1564. It remained in the Seckford family for over a hundred years but then passed through the hands of several local farmers and merchants, including the Cuttings, who in 1793 reconstructed and extended the mill, and it is this familiar structure that still stands today.
The Tide Mill remained operational throughout both wars, but finally closed in 1957 in a state of disrepair, the huge oak shaft broken and the wheel water-logged and rotting. And, although public interest was high, the mill needed a miracle to save it from demolition, which in 1968 came in the form of local resident Mrs Jean Gardner who bought it and gifted it the People of Woodbridge. She also set up a trust to manage its restoration and work commenced immediately, with local craftsmen being employed to replace the pantiles, raise the foundations and repair the weatherboarding, and in 1972 it opened to the public. Since then, the trust has been committed to maintaining and improving the mill and recently, after a hard fought and determined battle, secured much needed funds from the Heritage Lottery
for a major restoration project and in 2012 the wheels were turning once again, but this time it was fully operational as a working Tide Mill. While Dan makes a brew, I take in the panoramic views of the river whilst listening to the gentle trundle of turning wheels and feel the shake and creak of the whitewashed boarding. There is a timeless quality to this place that is very special, and it offers you the rare chance to feel a real connection with the powerful forces of nature. Pick your own. Three simple words that conjure up happy memories of lazy afternoons spent kneeling on warm straw, punnets of strawberries glistening in the sunshine and the tell-tale stained pink lips and fingers of satiated children. There is nothing more delicious than a perfectly ripe, freshly picked strawberry, so this year I am going to grow my own. Strawberries are incredibly easy to grow and do well in beds, pots, planters, hanging baskets - in fact they will grow pretty much anywhere and there are some great ideas online: wooden wine crates, a length of guttering, old drinking troughs or even recycled cans, painted and strung up with string. They can be bought as potted plants or bare-root runners and both should be planted now to give you a crop by the end of May, so pick a pot and get planting.
Make sure your container is large enough – the runners need to be about 10-12 inches apart – and has good drainage. Position in a sunny spot, fill with a multi-purpose compost and sink the plants so that the crown sits just above the soil. Firm down and water. Water regularly and feed with a high potash liquid fertilizer when the first flowers appear. As the fruit start to develop, tuck a little straw around each plant to keep the strawberries off the compost and water less as this can cause grey mould and rotten fruit. Now is the time to be vigilant. Watch out for thieves such as garden birds – net if necessary – or pilfering children – net if necessary. Strawberries are at their juiciest first thing in the morning so I look forward to picking them fresh for my breakfast, sliced over yoghurt and museli, that is if the rest of the family hasn’t got there first!
Time to blossom April is a tricky month in the garden as temperatures can be unpredictable, with warm days and surprisingly chilly nights, and heavy showers threatening to damage delicate buds and early flowering shrubs such as the showy camellia. However, it is also a month full of promise and birdsong and the anticipation of welcoming back familiar friends as the soil stirs and new shoots start to make their way slowly up towards the sunshine. As the saying goes, ‘April showers bring May flowers’ and now is the time to rejoice in the beauty of one of the most delightful months of the gardening year. INHERITANCE TAX – RESIDENCE NIL RATE BAND Barker Gotelee Solicitors is here to offer practical legal advice to help you and your family. Q. Sadly, I lost both of my elderly parents in quick succession towards the end of last year. What I hadn’t appreciated until they passed, is just how much money Mum and Dad had accumulated over the years. Having found a number of bank statements and papers referencing investments, in addition to the value of their house, I estimate that their estate is worth in the region of £850,000. I’m worried about the large Inheritance Tax bill I might receive as a consequence. Having done a bit of research, I know the combined inheritance tax threshold allows for £650,000 tax-free, but that still leaves a whopping £200,000. Will I have to pay 40% of that in tax?
A. The Barker Gotelee Private Client Team is experienced in dealing with similar situations. No, not necessarily. It may be possible to make use of the new Residence Nil Rate Band that has recently been introduced. In addition to the £325,000 per person standard Inheritance Tax Nil Rate Band, there is now a further allowance of £125,000 per person allowance against the value of their main residence, providing a direct descendant is inheriting. This is set to increase by a further £25,000 per person this year and a further £25,000 again next year. Of course, it depends on how much of the £850,000 you reference is the value of property compared with other investments. As an example, let’s assume that your parents’ house is worth around £300,000 and the other assets, such as cash and investments, make up the remaining £550,000 of their estate. With the two standard Inheritance Tax Nil Rate Band allowances of

David Wright of the Cake Shop Bakery has teamed up with Christian Stevenson, better known as ‘DJ BBQ’, to open a new all-day restaurant and café celebrating food cooked with fire. We find out more about their exciting plans to ignite the Woodbridge food scene. David’s family have been baking for the town of Woodbridge for three generations as his grandparents first opened the Cake Shop Bakery in 1946. “I always wanted to be a chef and loved watching ‘Ready Steady Cook’ and then trying to replicate this in the kitchen for family suppers – as you imagine we had some interesting meals! As a kid I used to help in the bakery and can remember coming in on Sundays to help Dad with the bread.” It was therefore inevitable that, like his father before him, David eventually tied his own apron strings and in 2012 took over the running of the
bakery. In the past seven years, he has continued to grow the company’s reputation in terms of the quality of their award-winning bread and cakes, and has also opened up a funky café next door called The Fire Station, which now roasts its own blend of deliciously smooth coffee, and relocated the bakery from behind the shop to a new purpose-built facility over at Bentwaters Park. This is where we meet, as David is working around the clock to deliver an order of 6000 doughnuts for an event in London.
He greets me suitably attired in white apron and blue hairnet, and once I have been kitted out with the same hairdo, I perch at the workstation whilst he stirs two vast vats of salted caramel topping and a colleague methodically tackles the task of cracking over two hundred eggs. David explains that investing in the new bakery has allowed them to increase both productivity and efficiency and they are now able to supply a large number of local restaurants, cafes, farm shops and selected Co-ops with their bread and rolls. But, like the doughnuts which will be delivered to the London Coffee Festival at 5am tomorrow, David also enjoys the notoriety of creating statement cakes for highbrow clients such Harrods and Selfridges and has done commissions for the V&A and Absolut Vodka. 50
This feels like a departure from the path his grandfather and father trod but David admits that times have changed and that with the high street struggling you need to adapt if you are going to survive. “Making the most of what we have and showing that there is life in an established business is what we’ve done for over 70 years. Now we must take some risks and go all in so that the business is still going for my grandchildren to enjoy. We want to have fun, show off our talent and provide for our families.” And it is this philosophy that has led David to create a new partnership with the flamboyant and talented Christian, an American who is a live fire chef and has made a career fronting shows for MTV and Channel 4, has his own YouTube channel and is a regular guest on Jamie Oliver’s food programmes.
They met at Camp Bestival in 2014, where David was part of The Feast Collective, a curated food tent that was being hosted by Christian, and the two immediately struck up a friendship over the virtues of pairing David’s brioche buns with Christian’s famous fire-grilled burgers. Christian was already familiar with Suffolk, as he is a friend of Jimmy Doherty, and so when talk of opening a restaurant became more than just musings across the kitchen table, he had no hesitation about agreeing to move his family to Woodbridge. The pair plan to transform the Victoria bakery and Fire Station Café into a fabulous new restaurant that will be open all day and will serve the best bread, coffee and cakes as well as wood-fired pizzas, burgers and BBQ food.
To achieve their dream, David and Christian have just launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to raise £75,000. “We want people to get involved and to have some part in the process. This is a fun and innovative way of funding the project as investors will be rewarded with some fantastic thank you gifts, including coffee subscriptions, baking lessons, signed books, VIP tickets to Camp Bestival, and for £3000 we will even come to your home and cook you a BBQ.” I love the creativity and dynamic thinking behind their plans and am almost as excited about the opening of the new restaurant as I am about trying the warm sweet-smelling doughnut that David hands me as I say goodbye. Named after the Bigod family, occupiers of Framlingham Castle during the 1100’s, Bigod 1101 is Suffolk’s newest aperitif and dessert wine produced by DJ Wines at their winery in Monk Soham. Inspired by products such as Pineau de Charentes and Floc des Gascogne, to name just a few; simply put, it’s a blend of Suffolk grown grapes fortified with brandy to 16% alcohol and then aged. The ultimate steak sandwich DJ BBQâ€™s recipe for seared, juicy steak topped with wood-fired, dirty onions in crusty, fresh sourdough ciabatta from The Cake Shop is worth firing up your pizza oven for â€“ even for one! Ingredients 1 8oz rib eye steak, at room temperature 1 sourdough ciabatta roll 1 onion 1 bulb garlic 3 tbsp mayonnaise 1-2 tsp grated horseradish 6-8 button mushrooms, sliced 25g diced pancetta or Lane Farm Lardons 1 chilli, half diced, half sliced 20g butter
Method Ensure your wood fired oven is fully saturated with a consistent flame. Put the onion straight into the fire and the garlic bulb directly on the floor of the oven on the opposite side to your fire. After 20 minutes, remove both and allow to cool slightly before squeezing out the sweet inners and discarding the burnt outer of both. Combine the roasted garlic with the mayo and horseradish and set to one side. Next, preheat a pan in the oven and once hot, add the pancetta and diced chilli. Cook until beginning to brown then add half the butter and the mushrooms. Return the pan to the oven to cook for a further 5 minutes or so.
Preheat a second pan in the oven until smoking hot. Prepare the steak by making little nicks with a sharp knife in all the areas of fat, rub with a light olive oil and season with salt. Cook the steak to your liking, adding the remaining butter to the pan halfway through the cook time. Once out the pan, season with cracked black pepper and leave to rest. Whilst your steak is resting, toast the ciabatta in the steak pan before spreading the horseradish aioli over both sides. Add the pancetta and mushrooms to the sandwich, chop up the onion and add that too. Once the steak is rested, slice and layer over everything else in the sandwich. Top with sliced chilli and the other half of ciabatta, pour yourself a glass and enjoy!

Walk the Walk It is 7.30am, the air is fresh and the grass tipped with dew, the birds are in full chorus and I am conscious that my walking shoes look far too shiny and new. I hope that they are up for the challenge, as this is not your normal aboutfram 3-mile jaunt that ends with a pint and Sunday lunch, this is a 16-mile hike that is part of my training for the London Moon Walk; a 26-mile midnight walk raising funds for breast cancer. I had no hesitation in signing up for the challenge as, like many of us, I have several close friends who have recently had to go through the ordeal of ‘finding a lump’, and this seemed one small way to show my support and help raise vital funds. Although talking of support, when I said yes, I had no idea that you are expected do the walk in 62
your bra! Thankfully, this morning we are fully clad, and as I wander up the street to join my fellow walkers, collectively known as Brandeston Breast Friends, I can’t help but think how lucky we are to be out enjoying the beautiful countryside. We are eleven in total, all friends – some new, some old – plus a few daughters who have willingly fallen into step to walk beside us. There is an official training programme which we are trying to follow, although the mid-week walks have sometimes ended up just being a slightly further and faster dog walk, but we have all been committed to the longer weekend walks. Meticulously planned, using hightech apps or in some cases an old-fashioned map and a piece of string, we have walked

in ever increasing circles from Brandeston, normally with a cafĂŠ half way to deliver a fix of caffeine and that all-important slice of cake! So far, we have circumnavigated Marlesford, Framlingham, Wickham Market and Debenham, and have longer walks planned for a return loop from Snape to Sizewell and a 20-mile finale to coincide with the Alde Valley Spring Festival over at Great Glemham. The walking has been amazing, allowing us to explore forgotten footpaths, admire stunning homes tucked away from view, discover a wood where wild boar roam and even find a few hills along the way. We have had sunshine, hail, wind and rain, but most importantly we have had fun. Walking 16-miles takes over five hours, and it feels like such a luxury to spend this much time with everyone;
swapping stories, sharing problems and finding solutions. The longer walks are a challenge. With most of us being around fifty, there is much talk of aching shins, knees, backs and hips, plus a few other places Julia, our very own walking doctor, has introduced us to! But this morning, like all the other mornings, the chatter of birds is soon replaced by the chatter of ladies on a mission, and as we settle into our stride we forget the pain and look ahead to the future â€“ it is certainly bright, and there is the promise of cake!
