We?ve installed some impressive canopies in the last few months and we?re thrilled to have the opportunity to share them with you in this months? newsletter, along with a focus on the Grasmere Timber Clad Cycle Shelter which has been a big hit with architects and contractors since we launched it 7 years ago. We also have a special feature on BIM including the 3 C?s of BIM (Building Information Modelling) and how you can find our products in the NBS BIM library. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and it provides you with inspiration whilst having a break from the screen. Once you?ve finished, why not pop it in the staff room for your colleagues to have a read too?

The Product That's Taking the Industry by Storm We?ve been so busy lately that it feels like an age away that we introduced our new range of aluminium decking. This product range has taken the market by storm and enquires and orders have been flooding in. However, between the mayhem we have managed to squeeze in the launch of a new product to the range; Fire Resistant Flat Balcony Decking. Sound familiar? Well yes it may, we have an existing product called Fire Resistant Balcony Decking however, the new deck board has a flatter appearance which is not only easy on the eye, it is also nicer to walk upon, particularly when barefoot. The product was created from the feedback we've received from our customers. We always seek feedback because we know this helps us to see which areas of our business we are getting right, and which areas need improvement. We therefore listened to what our customers were saying, and we put the much-valued feedback into action. Here's the main benefits and features to show you why you should add these decking boards to your product library. -

Selworthy School ? Hazelbrook Campus, Somerset In August we completed our portion of the extensive £9m works at the all new Selworthy School?s Hazelbrook Campus in Taunton, Somerset for Willmott Dixon and we?re thrilled to show you the photos. Through the Scape Major Works Framework, Somerset County Council have expanded Selworthy School with a brand new campus that will cater for their secondary and 6th form students with learning disabilities providing up to 100 extras places, while the existing campus will continue to cater for their primary pupils with learning disabilities. In May last year (2018) Willmott Dixon asked us to supply prices for a number of shade and shelter structures on the new campus. We provided them with costs for two 6m x 6m Ulverston Umbrellas, four 5.6m x 3.8m Coniston Wall Mounted Canopies and two 3m x 3.8m Coniston Wall Mounted Canopies.

We were really keen to win this job so when Willmott Dixon contacted us to say that they were on site completing the construction of the building and were now at the stage where they would like to order the canopies and arrange installation, we were delighted. Since our last contact, the canopy requirements had changed slightly so we re-submitted prices for the new designs and sizes which included 11 structures. On supply of the new prices, we highlighted our recently awarded Willmott Dixon projects which include: a parliament building in Westminster, Wixams Primary Academy, William Morris School and Ive Farm Outdoor Sporting Hub which were also all Scape projects. The final order comprised of 11 canopies and shelters and due to the size of the project, we installed the structures over two phases as shown follows:

Phase 1: Installed March-April 2019 2no. 6m x 6m Ulverston Umbrellas 4no. 5.6m x 3.8m Coniston Wall Mounted Canopies 2no. 3m x 3.8m Coniston Wall Mounted Canopies

Phase 2: Installed July-August 2019 1no. 6.49m x 5.57m Bespoke Grange Junior Free-Standing Canopy 1no. 8.25m x 2.05 Grasmere Timber Clad Cycle Shelter 1no. 9.2m x 2.05m Grasmere Timber Clad Bin Shelter The installation went ahead smoothly, and the Willmott Dixon site staff were very happy with our installation team, stating that our guys needed next to no support from them and left the site clean and tidy, and they look forward to seeing us on future projects.

Five Reasons Why You Should Choose the Grasmere Timber Shelter Cycle shelters are becoming imperative outside structures for many establishments including town centres, shopping complexes, schools, supermarkets, offices, factories and hospitals. The world is starting to change, we are becoming much more aware of the impact that our choices have on the environment and how they will affect our future generations and wildlife. One of the actions many of us are taking to improve the future, is choosing to walk or cycle rather than drive. This means that every year, cycling becomes a little more popular and so does the need to provide cyclists with somewhere safe and sheltered to store their bicycles whilst out and about. The cycle shelter that has topped our charts without question, is the Grasmere Timber Clad Cycle Shelter and here?s five reasons why you should choose this fantastic timber cycle shelter 1. Stylish, Contemporary and Versatile with a Natural Appearance The Grasmere is a stylish shelter that looks great in any setting due to its natural, yet contemporary appearance. The sharp rectangle design and galvanised steel frame adds strong contemporary elements, whilst the smooth timber cladding softens the structure and adds an organic, natural feel. This perfect combination enables the shelter to fit in with any environment whether it be modern, traditional or somewhere in between. 2. It?s Not Just a Cycle Shelter The Grasmere Timber Clad Cycle Shelter has many more functions than just storing bicycles. It can be used as a waiting shelter, bus shelter or smoking shelter with the addition of benches, a bin store or storage shelter with the addition of lockable doors and a buggy

shelter with the addition of a buggy bar to secure the prams to. The possibilities are almost endless, and you can also use one shelter for two functions, such as a cycle and waiting shelter with benches at one end and cycle racks at the other. 3. Tailored to your Requirements If you are looking for a standard shelter yet need a specific size to suit your space and requirements that?s not a problem. The Grasmere has a standard size of 4.1m x 2.05m and it can be extended in 2m bays. Alternative sizes may be available on request depending on the dimensions. 4. Impressive Life Expectancies When it comes to investing in a cycle shelter, you need to know that the money you?re spending is well invested and will last for many years. That?s why our

Grasmere Timber Clad Cycle Shelter is supplied with up to a 25 year life expectancy for the frame and the Western Red Cedar Wood is supplied with an impressive life expectancy of 40-60 years. 5. It?s Our Most Popular Shelter While it?s not always desirable to have the same as everyone else, when it comes to a purchase such as a cycle shelter, sometimes it really is best to follow the crowd. There?s a reason why the Grasmere Timber Clad Cycle Shelter has become our most popular shelter, over taking the Easydale Cycle Shelter to reach the no.1 spot. It?s because it simply cannot be beaten on appearance, price, longevity, strength and functionality. What more could you want?

St Giles Hospice In Spring 2018, we were specified by IDP Architects for a free-standing canopy and a cycle shelter at Burntwood Retail Park in Staffordshire. The location was previously a factory site and was in the process of being renovated for various retail units including a new store for St. Giles Hospice. Our products that were specified included the Kensington Mono-Pitch Free Standing Canopy which features a contemporary 200mm x 200mm x 6mm steel box section frame that is covered with a choice of 5mm solid polycarbonate or 10.8mm toughened glass. In this case, the architects specified the toughened glass and requested that the frame was powder coated in Anthracite Grey ? RAL 7016 which is the most popular colour for this structure.

The cycle shelter that IDP Architects specified was the Easydale Cycle Shelter which may be a cost effective cycle shelter, yet it is stylish, contemporary and robust. It is perfect for use in well used areas including retail parks as well as schools, hospitals and leisure centres. It was also requested that the cycle shelter was powder coated in Anthracite Grey RAL 7016 to match the canopy and the rest of the unit?s exterior aesthetics. In December 2018, RFC Construction notified us that they had won the tender and therefore placed the order with us for both the canopy and the shelter. The canopies were installed earlier this year in January 2019 and the St. Giles Hospice store opened in August 2019.

CPD's - What Subject Would You Like Us to Feature? We are in the process of creating a number of informative CPD's with RIBA and would love feedback from expert architects in the industry to find out what subjects you would like us to cover. Would you like more information about the fire resistance requirements for use on balconies on buildings? Or maybe your interested in the benefits of taking the inside, outside with canopies? We'd love to find out what areas you're interested in and we'll do our best to cover them. Please email your suggestions to: marketing@ablecanopies.co.uk

The 3 C?s of BIM The NBS BIM Library is expanding every day as more approved BIM Objects are added. For architects, contractors and manufacturers there are many benefits in this new world of Building Information Modelling (BIM). The three key opportunities are:

Cost and time savings The NBS BIM Library allows architects to select products and effectively ?build the project, before they build the project?. This saves time on product assessment and decision making, reduces costs by minimising errors and will increase efficiencies in the actual build phase.

Collaboration improvement It follows that easier access to products and product information, and increased precision of selection (using the BIM Object Standard), leads to more productive collaboration between architects and suppliers. Being able to view product options and start a dialogue with the supplier or contractor about their use will help to raise the quality of the finished project. Which in turn leads to more projects and recommendations in the future.

Clash detection There will no longer be the need for 2D drawings to be compared on site which can lead to costly mistakes and time consuming changes and resolutions. BIM will enable the project to be seen in full and will allow early clash detection to take place. That means solutions are found in a more efficient way, improving overall productivity. And improving the bottom line return of projects. The potential of these benefits is significant and will change the industry. The NBS BIM Library is an important step to show the advances and practical applications of BIM. As a supplier, Able Canopies collaborate with architects and contractors and already have our own Objects in the Library, with more to follow. The ability to pick suitable products quickly and accurately is a major advantage for architects and contractors.

Find Our Products in the NBS BIM Library We are pleased to announce that our canopy and shelter products have been added to the NBS BIM Library. There are 70 BIM objects currently available for architects and contractors to access, helping their planning and specifying, with more being added every week.

Murray Park Community School, Derbyshire Products: 4 No. Coniston Wall Mounted Canopies 2.9m x 2.4m, 8m x 2.347m, 10.9m x 2.348m and 19.142m x 3.6m - 2.1m 3 No. Langdale Cycle Shelters: All 4.2m x 3m Accessories: 1 No. DDA Compliant Canopy Handrail Canopy Colour: Anthracite Grey - RAL 7016 Shelter Colour: Galvanised finish Estimated Value: £46,000.00 Completion Date: June 2019 Contractor: Wates Construction Architect: Lungfish Architects The Brief

Wates Construction contacted us in October 2017 as they were tendering for the £7.8m development at Murray Park Community School in Mickleover, Derby. The project which was supported by SCAPE and funded by the ESFA, comprised of a brand-new building with a new reception area, 15 additional classrooms and office space. When Wates first contacted us, they requested estimates for a number of Tarnhow timber canopies which are constructed from Glulam timber to provide shade and shelter around the new building. However, after being appointed the project by Derby City Council to carry out the works which were designed by Lungfish Architects, the canopies had been removed from the project to save on costs.

Once the project was in full swing, it became apparent that a number of canopies would fit into their budget after all and came back to us for some up-to-date estimates. We have a very good working relationship with Wates Construction and were therefore very hopeful that we would secure the project. We had recently worked with them at four other projects including Westbury School, Bluecoat Primary School, Poplars Farm Primary School and The Beacons Children?s Home.

and shelter solution and the Langdale Cycle Shelters were the perfect product to provide the cycle coverage required.

An order was subsequently placed for four Coniston Wall Mounted Canopies, one of which would be fitted with a DDA compliant handrail, they also ordered three Langdale Cycle Shelters. The canopies were to be finished in Anthracite Grey - RAL 7016 and the steel Langdale Shelters would be galvanised. The Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy is our most popular structure, it is well loved within the education sector and we have installed thousands across the UK. Last year alone (2018), we installed a total of length of 1,142 metres of this versatile, stylish and long-lasting system.

After talking to the contractor, we were informed that a competitor was specified for the project however, all parties preferred Able Canopies on a basis of operational and previous experience which is a great testament to us. The Solution We were invited to attend a design meeting in February 2019 to discuss a shade and shelter solution that would work well with the area and match the design whilst also being cost effective and of the highest quality. From the meeting, it was agreed by all that the Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy would be the perfect shade

The Langdale Cycle Shelter has an understated, yet elegant design that works well in any environment and provides secure cycle storage with the addition of our Sheffield Cycle Racks.

The Installation The installation went ahead in two phases; the first phase saw the installation of three of the Coniston Wall Mounted Canopies and the second phase saw the installation of the fourth Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy and the Langdale Cycle Shelters. In order to ensure the handrail was DDA compliant, we installed it 1100mm from the floor. Our installation was completed in June 2019 and the entire project was completed in September 2019, ready for the start of the new academic year. The expansion has completely modernised the school facilities whilst allowing the school to increase their pupil capacity to from 1,100 to 1,650 across years 7 to 11. The work was carried out to provide additional places due to the number of new housing developments being built in the area. Here?s what the Site Manager from Wates Construction had to say about Able Canopies? participation in the project:

?Able Canopies provided brilliant services from design through to installation. The canopies look fantastic and the team were a pleasure to work with.? - Chris Kirby, Site Manager ? Wates Construction
