Welcome to the Summer 2021 edition of Outside Comfort Zone - your quarterly dose of building design solutions for you and your clients. It's been a whole year since you last received an edition of OCZ and that's because it's been pretty hectic here at Able Canopies HQ: we've therefore got loads to talk about but we thought we'd keep it short and instead share a few of our most recent updates from 2021 so far.

The Acclaim Accreditation means that we comply and adhere to everything that CHAS required from us so you can rest assure you will continue to receive the same great service and health and safety measures.

Our New Fun, Fresh and Fabulous Shade Sail Fabric

Our commerical shade sails have always been popular products, particularly within educational and play settings due to the bright and cheerful fabric colours available. We?re an innovative company and we?re always looking at ways to ?keep up with the times?to ensure our products meet all the requirements our customers require whilst still offering the very best in quality and customer service.

That?s why, when our supplier contacted us regarding their new shade sail fabric range, we couldn?t contain our excitement!

All we heard was ?one fabric two colours?(mind blown)! ? ?How does that work?? I hear you wonder; we thought the same. No, it?s not a fabric that is blended with two different colours, we already offer that with our standard shade sail fabric. This fresh, fun and fabulous fabric features one colour on one side, and another colour on the other ? genius!

Yes, that correct, so instead of installing two shade sails to create the effect of two colours, you can opt for just the one shade sail.

Because we install our shade sails with high points and hypar points (some posts are higher and some posts are lower), you can see both colours on the fabric from almost wherever you stand.

So, if the only reason you were thinking of choosing a shade sail array was for the variety of colour, think again, you can save lot of £££?s by opting for one shade sail with our fantastic new dual shade sail fabric.

However, cost aside, the dual fabric looks fantastic and with 12 colour combinations to choose from including vibrant shades and more neutral hues, are you sure to find the perfect combination for your project.

Trecco Bay Holiday Park, Mid Glamorgan Product: The Tarnhow Dome Free Standing Timber Canopy Size: 11.3m x 9.7m Timber Frame Stain Colour: White Installation Date: January 2021 Architect: NBDA Architects

The Brief NBDA Architects were working for Parkdean Resorts to renovate a number of their holiday parks across the UK and one of those parks was Trecco Bay in the stunning costal town of Porthcawl in South Wales. They were in need of a large shade and shelter structure that would provide weather protection to their visitors whilst dining alfresco and also double up as an all-weather outdoor entertainment area.

The Solution At the time of enquiry, we had already installed at Ty Mawr Holiday Park, Warmwell Holiday Park and Lizard Point Holiday Park which are all owned by Parkdean Resorts, so both the Architect and the Director of Development & Estates at Parkdean Resorts knew they wanted a canopy from the same range. The canopies we previously installed were from our Tarnhow timber canopy range; two were the Tarnhow Dome Free Standing Timber Canopy and one was the Tarnhow Curved Free Standing Timber Canopy.

The canopy they settled on for Trecco Bay was the Tarnhow Dome, which is a fantastic choice.

This stunning canopy can span up to 12 metres and has an unlimited length, making it absolutely

perfect for outdoor dining areas and for holding events and entertainment.

With the current pandemic situation, these canopies were even more valuable to the parks because they enable them to serve more guests at the restaurant whilst keeping a safe distance.

They also attract more customers to dine with them as they can dine outside even if its raining, knowing the weather won?t ruin their experience.

The Installation In January 2021, we installed a 11.3m x 9.7m Tarnhow Dome Free Standing Timber Canopy within the middle of their main complex, adjacent to their restaurant. They chose to have the timber frame finished with a white stain which gives off a stunning fresh, seaside vibe which is perfect for the holiday setting.

The staff at Trecco Bay can now serve meals and hold their entertainment outside whatever the weather, which is a big support for the park especially as it was installed in time for the parks?reopening when only outdoor dining and entertainment was permitted at the time.

After we?d installed the canopy, the park chose to have T.V. screens and speakers attached to the underside of the canopy to ensure that when entertainment is on indoors, the guests seated outside won?t be missing out. Although we didn?t install the screen and speakers, we think they?re a great idea and finishes the canopy off nicely.

Let's Collaborate on NBS Chorus We have been members of the NBS for quite a few years now and if you are too, then you will know all about their switch over to NBS Chorus. We?ve been looking into the changes and can only see it as a really positive move forward.

If you have a membership with the NBS, you can now invite us to collaborate with your projects. NBS have a plugin which is supported by the leading CAD programmes such as Autodesk Revit. Once you have this downloaded and set up, and you have a project that requires a canopy or shelter, yet 3 you?re not sure of the ideal structure, you can invite us, enter in the requirements such as size, material and required conformities. We will then drop in our products that meets all the requirements and if you approve, you can make it live. It?s as simple as that!

This enables us to work closely with you and helps you to specify product that meets all of your and your clients?requirements, whist saving you valuable time.

Hillingdon Hospital Benefits from a 44m Entrance Canopy Summary: - Hillingdon Hospital needed to cover their entrance to protect staff, visitors and patients from the elements - The Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy was the perfect structure for the job - Ambulances can now pull up to the canopy to take patients into the hospital whilst keeping protected from the weather In December last year, we finished installing six Coniston canopies at Hillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge, London for The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This was a really interesting canopy to design and install, and the fact that we did it within a really quick turnaround made the challenge even more fulfilling (less than 7 weeks from initial contact to the installation).

The canopies were required to provide weather protection at the A&E entrance of the hospital which, like all hospitals, is one of their busiest entrances. This means we worked a mixture of days and nights to cause minimal disruption and to allow the A&E department to be accessible at all times.

The entire entrance to the A&E department is raised up with a ramp which meant we were unable to install canopy posts into the ground.

Because our Coniston canopy is a robust commercial grade, permanent structure, bolting it to the ramp wasn?t an option. We therefore installed theses canopies with steel planters filled with concrete which we have used for many installations in the past. They ensure the strength and durability to match the Coniston which is supplied with an impressive 10 year guarantee.

The Coniston which is extremely versatile in design, worked perfectly for this installation

because while one of the canopies were wall mounted, the other five needed to be free standing due to the distance of the ramp from the main building. The Coniston can be transformed into a free standing canopy with the addition of rear posts therefore making it the perfect solution. By using the same canopy with slight modifications for all six structures, the end result was what looked like one large canopy with a seamless appearance.

Staff, patients and visitors can now enter the A&E department whilst keeping covered from the weather, they can also queue, make phone calls and take a break in the fresh air without getting wet in the rain, or too hot in the sun.

The canopy was also intended to keep patients and ambulance staff dry and sheltered whilst wheeling patients out of the ambulances into the hospital. The canopies were therefore designed with height in mind so that the ambulances can reverse up to the canopy and open their doors underneath for full weather protection.

We installed our first triple Tarnhow Dome Free Standing Timber Canopy for Parkdean Resorts at Ty Mawr Holiday Park in Abergele in May 2020 and I can see us installing many more of these as it looks fantastic.

Tarnhow Mono Wall Mounted Timber Canopy Our range of timber canopies are a big hit with our customers as the Tarnhow Mono Wall Mounted Timber Canopy comes in at number three. It?s easy to see why, our timber canopies are constructed from Glulam Timber which is supplied by FSC Accredited Timber Merchants. There are five structures in our range with some featuring straight timber beams and some featuring striking curved timber beams.

5 Beck Wall Mounted Entrance Canopy The Beck is a slimline wall mounted entrance canopy that is cantilevered and therefore features no front posts. This makes it perfect for small entrances where front canopy posts are not ideal and could well be the reason it is the 5th most popular canopy. The canopy frame is manufactured from strong aluminium sections so you know it will last for many years due to aluminium?s natural resistance against rust; and it is covered with 4mm solid polycarbonate panels.

Ulverston Umbrella It?s not surprising that a tensile fabric canopy has made it into the top five, in particularly the Ulverston Umbrella. We have been installing the Ulverston for over 10 years and it still looks just as modern and striking as the first one we installed all those years ago. Brady Primary School in Romford, London loved the Ulverston Umbrella so much, they had four 5m x 5m umbrellas installed in June 2020.
