Hello and welcome

To the Winter edition of OCZ, we?ve had a busy few months here at the world of Able Canopies, and as a result, we have a case study of a local hospital job where we installed a entrance canopy which also doubles as a covered outdoor queuing area to share with you. We have also been helping a number of holiday parks get ready for the season ahead by installing canopies which can be used for outdoor dining and outdoor entertainment come rain or shine. There?s also some company news that we?ve shared with you, so grab a cuppa, take a break and have a read. If you enjoy this edition, we?d love for you to share your copy with a colleague who may find it interesting too.

A Double Installation for Parkdean Resorts This month we installed two canopies for Parkdean Resorts, one in Newquay and another in Skegness. We installed these canopies for A&M Architecture who we have worked with previously on other Parkdean Resorts projects. Both holiday parks can now provide their guests with large areas of 153 sqm, so they can enjoy dining outside whilst keeping protected from the sun and the rain. The image to the right shows the canopy installed at Southview Leisure Park however, the groundworks are unfinished, and the posts therefore still have the protective tape over them. Once we have completed images, we will share a full case study with you. If you have a project that requires a canopy, call us on 0800 389 9072 or email us: sales@ablecanopies.co.uk to see how we can help.

The image above was taken before the groundworks were finished and whilst the protective covering was on the canopy posts.

Addenbrookes Hospital Case Study Location: Cambridgeshire Product: Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy Size: 25.21m x 2.4-2.5m Upgrades: Polycarbonate Front Fills Installation Date: December 2021 The Brief

turnaround

Addenbrooke?s Hospital in Cambridgeshire were looking for a wall mounted canopy to provide shade and shelter over the main entrance of their Accident and Emergency department. At the time of enquiry, they didn?t have any form of shelter over the entrance and patients and visitors were exposed to the elements when queuing or wating outside. Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust?s Project Manager came to Able Canopies for a quotation in hope that we could offer a product that met their design needs, whilst providing the weather protection required. The canopy specification presented to Able Canopies was a wall mounted canopy with a polycarbonate roof and toughened glass or polycarbonate front panels. The Solution Upon receiving the specification, we put forward a cost for the Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy, although not meeting the full specification this was a cost effective yet, robust and long-lasting design solution. The original specification required glass side panels, as requested by the Fire Safety team, as they wanted to minimise the use of polycarbonate. However, the polycarbonate we use has excellent ratings including BS476 part 7 with a class 1 fire rating and EN 13501 B-S1, d0, so we sent them the fire rating certificates which ultimately met their approval and sealed the deal. Once the canopy design was approved, we were invited to attend a site meeting to begin the design and survey process in October 2021. During the meeting, we were able to take measurements and check the suitability of the building for a wall mounted installation and therefore put a firm quotation together. It was also discussed at the meeting that a quick

was required which we were able to accommodate on this occasion. So, once the order was approved in November 2021, we booked the installation in for the following month, December 2021. The Installation The canopy was a slightly complex design as it featured ?hips?and ?valleys?(as shown in the image further above) to allow the canopy to follow the internal and external corners of the building. We installed the canopy over a period of 9 days; two of which were weekends, so we finished site on the Friday and returned on the Monday, meaning the installation took just 7 days. We were onsite during regular daytime hours which means we were there during some of the accident and emergency departments busiest times. There was a regular flow of not only staff, but patients and ambulances entering and leaving the entrance throughout the whole build. We were therefore extremely conscientious of the environment we were working within, and were also mindful of where we placed our equipment and where we positioned ourselves to enable a safe and usable entrance for the users at all times. The installation was planned to take place from 9th? 17th December and all went ahead as planned within the timescale scheduled. The end result looks fantastic and provides a lengthy walkway and outdoor queuing area that patients, visitors and staff can benefit from all year round.

Top 5 Architect and Contractor Canopies in 2021 2021 was a very busy year at Able Canopies and we installed some really impressive structures that not only are we particularly proud of but make a big difference to the end users too. We have therefore put a list together of our top five canopies that we installed for Architects and Contractors in 2021. We usually feature the biggest and most complex jobs; however, we?ve found that some of the simpler jobs can bring just as much joy and don?t always get the attention they deserve. Scroll down to see which projects made the cut and why. Priory Hurworth House School, County Durham Product Installed: Grange Junior Free Standing Canopy Size: 11m x 4m Upgrades: Coloured Polycarbonate Roof Sheets The canopy installed at Priory Hurworth House School in County Durham is a firm favourite of mine because of the fantastic colours that were chosen. We worked on this job for Richmond Contracts Projects Ltd. which was part of a larger project refurbishing their courtyard that leads to the school field. The finished canopy brightens up the outside area perfectly and provides shade and shelter all year round. Beds Flooring Distributors, Bedfordshire Product Installed: Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy Size: 6m x 5m Upgrades: Rear Posts The Coniston wall mounted canopy we installed for Headlam Group, is the perfect example of how this canopy, although primarily a wall mounted canopy, can be manufactured as a free-standing canopy for clients that are looking for a shade and shelter structure away from their building. The canopy was installed for a flooring distribution warehouse and provides cover from the weather whilst staff are rolling and cutting carpets outside. Aberfoyle Primary School, South Lanarkshire Product Installed:Denver Timber Cycle Shelter Size:6.2m x 1.6m (Holds up to 12 bikes) Upgrades:None Maybe I just chose this one because the photos are great, who knows but either way, who doesn?t love a timber cycle shelter? Timber has transformed cycle shelters from a practical structure to a practical and stylish structure. Just look at this one we installed at Aberfoyle Primary School in South Lanarkshire Scotland for AKP Scotland Ltd. and Wardell Armstrong Architects.

Trecco Bay Holiday Park, South Wales Product Installed: Tarnhow Dome Free Standing Timber Canopy Size: 11.3m x 9.7m Upgrades: None We have installed various canopies for Parkdean Reports over the last few years, working with many different Architects, and we?ve enjoyed working with every single one of them. However, the canopy we installed at Trecco Bay stands out for me the most. I love that the clients chose a white stain on the timber; it adds a whole different dimension to the canopy and creates a striking focal point. We worked with NBDA Architects on this project, and the holiday park?s patrons now have a large covered outdoor area where they can enjoy their food, drinks and outdoor entertainment no matter the weather. West Middlesex University Hospital, London Product Installed: The Coniston Wall Mounted Canopy Size: 11m x 4m - 5.5m Upgrades: Rear Posts | Polycarbonate Front and Side Panels Marcon Construction were working on a project for West Middlesex Hospital in London and the project included a requirement for a canopy. Their visitors and patients were in need of cover from the weather when entering the main Accident and Emergency entrance and whilst queuing up outside. The photo to the right shows the canopy in the dark with the lighting illuminating it, making it stand out perfectly. From just this photo alone, you can see the fantastic design of this canopy and what a difference it will make for the hospital?s visitors and patients. The side panels offer additional protection that will not only protect from the sun and rain but from the wind too.

It's now easier to specify our products with NBS NBS have launched a new feature which makes it quicker and easier to specify our products within your specifications including the full product details and technical properties. As an Architect or Specifier, this feature will save you time when specifying products, making your experience with the NBS and Able Canopies much more streamlined. This fantastic new feature means you can add our products to your specifications in 3 simple steps; many other specifiers are saying they love how easy it is to use.

We have listed our products on the NBS including our BIM models for some years now and have received great feedback. We think this new feature which is unique to the NBS is great, and at Able Canopies we?re all for anything that makes life easier without compromising on quality. You can find the specifications for our products in NBS source on their website. You can also view our BIM products on the NBS website here or on our website here: https://www.ablecanopies.co.uk/bim.html

Canopies aren't our only focus, we specialise in shelters too It?s easy to think that we only specialise in canopies however, that?s not the case, we also supply and install shelters too. As an example, we recently installed an Easydale cycle shelter and a Grasmere bin shelter in North Yorkshire. Tom Willoughby, the contractors working on the project, contracted us to complete the works in January 2022. So, the end users now have areas where their staff can securely park their bicycles whilst at work and somewhere to store their refuse and recycling bins, making the area look much tidier.
