DORSET CITIZENS ADVICE MAKES MOBILE OFFICE ACCESSIBLE WITH HELP FROM VAPOR RICON advice, on a range of matters, at events where the van will be located.

What the customer said MOBILE CITIZENS ADVICE OFFICE that supports the people of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch at public events has become accessible for the first time after the installation of a Faiveley Vapor Ricon Wheelchair lift.

A

Challenge The Mercedes Sprinter Van required a compact solution that was easily stowed when the vehicle was travelling and not in use by the public. It was also required to be robust and easily operated to give operators and users complete confidence.

The Citizens Advice Team worked with a local conversion company who researched the choices available to them, selecting the FVR lift as their preferred option.

Solution The S2014, a product from the Faiveley Vapor Ricon S Series range of lifts, was fitted in the Mercedes Sprinter Van and utilised rear access.

This particular lift design is a popular choice for commercial, community and healthcare transport vehicles due to its space saving footprint and versatility. It is easily controlled by a member of staff working in the mobile office. It has a powerful electrohydraulic motor that is backed up by a manual system should the need arise. Furthermore, there is the added benefit of the industry leading Ricon Safety Zone which offers front and rear rollstops, handrails and secures the passenger during operation of the lift.

In addition, one of the newest products from the FVR portfolio was fitted in conjunction with the lift; a set of 900mm electric steps making access for all easier.

RNIB’s flagship Sight Loss Advice Service was key source for people in the UK during 2021 HE SIGHT loss advice service run by The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) has received hundreds of thousands of calls this year, helping blind and partially sighted people across the UK during what has been a challenging year for many people.

Supporting the 2,190,000 people in the UK who are living with sight loss, statistics reveal there has been a staggering 210,275 calls to the Helpline and Advice Line, across the UK from January to November 2021.

Benefit rules, technology and eye health were the top three reasons why people spoke to the advice line. Calls regarding emotional support also featured in the top ten reasons for people aged 16 to 64; in comparison to calls concerning technology ranking the top spot for people aged 65 to 74.

When diagnosed with an eye condition or experiencing a sudden change in vision, having

someone you can turn to for support and advice can make a huge difference. RNIB is raising awareness of its Sight Loss Advice Service, which provides practical and emotional support over the phone, face-to-face at many hospital eye clinics, or through online information.

Donald Mac Fadyen, 68, who is registered Severely Sight Impaired (SSI), hasn’t been able to see his 96-year-old mother in four years due to travelling costs being too expensive. Donald said: “With my mother living twenty-two miles away, taxi costs are unaffordable. I started to feel very isolated, so I decided to seek advice from RNIB’s Sight Loss Advice Service.

“The advisers have been incredibly supportive and helped find a solution for me to be able to visit my mother. Providing COVID-19 restrictions don’t change, I’ll now be able to see her during the Christmas holidays. It’s the best present I could’ve asked for as my mother is my closest relative.”

OHN, from Kidderminster in the West Midlands first injured his back as a small child, then again more significantly at the age of 26. John also suffers from arthritis and chronic knee pain, which makes it difficult for him to walk short distances – even with the aid of a walking stick. Despite these challenges, John can continue living an independent life with the full freedom to travel, thanks to his eFOLDi mobility scooter.

John acquired his eFOLDi scooter just under 5 years ago. When he first tried out his eFOLDi scooter he was surprised just how lightweight and easy to fold it was, compared to many scooters he had used before.

John says, “Being ultraportable, my eFOLDi allows me the freedom and independence to travel all around the UK, visit friends and family and go around most shops with ease – without the need for any assistance.” John recently took his family on holiday to Rhyl in North Wales along with his scooter. John simply folded up his eFOLDi scooter like a cabin-sized suitcase so it could be stored easily in the boot of his car.

Due to its advanced lithium battery technology, John’s eFOLDi scooter also has quite a considerable range of 14 miles. His previous small scooters could not be relied upon and quite often let John down, usually on his way home - leaving him stranded and anxious he may not even get home. ELEBRATING the last 20 years, and the 20th Anniversary of Ability Needs, I spent some time thinking about what has happened since 2001. On a very personal note, I was pregnant and not only struggling with morning sickness but dealing with some very interesting opinions from people who thought that ‘people like me’ shouldn’t be allowed to have children. Disabled friends with younger children than mine have had mixed experiences since then.

The Sydney Paralympic Games were 5 cycles ago but when they won the right to host the Olympics, they originally didn’t appear that keen to host a Paralympic Games. Australian athletes, who seemed to have a decent level of support at that time, talked to me about their hopes for a home Games. This stayed with me as I worked on the London Games and, along

with a whole pile of other athletes, had a high aspiration of what true inclusion could look like.

Back then I competed in a demonstration race at the Olympics and then stayed on for the Paralympics, and the biggest thing I remember was that the village felt the same at both events.

This might feel like a small thing but at the time it was significant. In Atlanta it felt like they were taking the village down around us when we arrived. In what was a big move forward it was only with the bid in 2005 for the 2012 Games that any city wanting to win the Games had to bid for the Paralympic Games as well.

In the late 90’s I had sat on the National Disability Council which oversaw the implementation of the Disability Discrimination Act. I had argued that I would have preferred an Equality Act and it was only in 2007 that The Equality and Human Rights Commission was Ability Needs Magazine

created. I don’t think that the EA has helped disabled people as much as I hoped. It didn’t help that a lot of the wins for disabled have come through their ability to take providers of goods and services to court, which has been made harder from Legal Aid legislation. I feel hopeful that there are still many disabled people who are still able to push forward and unfortunately, because they need to, sue companies that aren’t willing enough to bring about change.

Looking back to 2001, Foot and Mouth seemed about the worse thing that we were going to deal with as a society in our lifetime.

Hand washing, disinfection and isolating contagious people is something that we know more about now than ever before. I can’t even begin to describe what the last 21 months have been like for everyone. The Coronavirus Act was the biggest piece of legislation that I have worked on, and one that was pushed through in the shortest amount of time. Spending so much time at home is not something that I have done in 20 years. What I have found is that I can’t remember whether I did something in June last year or June this year because it has all merged in to one.

What has changed in the last 20 years for me

is that I am now connected into an amazing group of disability rights activists that I hadn’t previously been. There is much talk today about athletes being able to have a platform to speak from and while some are able to, and many are not, it wasn’t the easiest thing to do back then to find people who shared some of the same views of inclusion that I did. I was lucky that as an athlete I had a team of people who helped me be the best I could, and that is true of my life in politics.

There are more dropped kerbs, accessible toilets, and mostly a better attitude in many places, but we need to move forward at a faster pace. I have a list of what I want to see change in the future. More disabled people in work and the lowering of the disability pay gap. More disabled people on adverts although this year has seen an improvement. No disabled person being left on a train or being refused access is high up there too. Disabled children not being excluded from school. People not abusing blue badge spaces is another one. Although the speed of change hasn’t been quick enough, I am mostly optimistic because I believe in people.

So here’s to the next twenty years and beyond!

Eric Knows but Ella Didn't

mum of three young children from County Durham has set up a new website to allow people with additional needs to find activities, places and people that will go the extra mile to accommodate any special considerations.

The "Eric Knows" website is the idea of occupational therapist Ella Bains from Bishop Auckland. Targeted to help those with specific needs such as new mums, wheelchair users or visually impaired people, the site pinpoints those companies and venues which help or go that extra bit further when people really need it.

Ella's journey to starting the website began three years ago when she worked as an occupational therapy case manager specialising in spinal cord injuries. Her idea to help even more people by creating Eric Knows was made even more personal when at the age of four, her son Fynn was diagnosed with Autism.

"I knew very little about autism and attended parents' classes to help me understand the condition so that I could help Fynn. As I learnt more, I realised that some of the traits and behaviours I was hearing about related to my own personality and I suddenly had the realisation that I too was on the autism spectrum. Looking back into my childhood, I was

able to identify times when I couldn't understand certain things and I started to fill in gaps from my past which suddenly made perfect sense," said Ella.

As well as the website embracing diversity and equality, Ella herself has taken the decision to help other people with a disability and in partnership with Durham University, she has taken on four autistic interns to help with blogs, website updates and social media.

"The team have been amazing; they really understand the vision that we are trying to achieve, and they are also really creative as well as being out-of-the box thinkers."

QUARTER OF OVER 50s LESS ACTIVE THAN PRE-PANDEMIC

NEW report into the health of older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic has been launched by The Physiological Society and Centre for Ageing Better. The report features the results from a YouGov survey that highlights significant reductions in levels of physical activity among older adults and recommends a ‘National Post-Pandemic Resilience Plan’ to respond to this.

Findings from our YouGov survey include: • 26% of over-50s are doing less exercise than before the pandemic. This is particularly acute in the over 75s.

• The top reasons given by over-50s for doing less physical activity are lack of motivation (44%), and that they are out of the habit of being physically active or socialising in person (42%).

• Different age groups reported different preferred actions to help them increase their physical activity levels: o 50-59-year-olds preferred activity monitors (such as FitBits) o 60-74-year-olds preferred social activity groups o Those aged 75+ preferred tailored advice from a healthcare professional The report calls for public health agencies across the UK to launch a National Post-Pandemic Resilience Programme. This would be a joined-up system of support to provide over 50s with tailored advice and guidance on how to improve health post-pandemic. The aim would be to not only return over 50s to their pre-pandemic physical activity levels but encourage greater long-term levels of activity.

A National Post-Pandemic Resilience Programme should include: 1. A programme of physical activity to increase physical resilience, focusing on older people with high-risk factors such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and sarcopenia.

2. A specific focus on increasing physical activity of people in their 50s to prevent future frailty.

3. “At home” physical activity options, including digital

platforms and online communities, as well as utilising national broadcasters.

4. Clear guidance about the importance of a healthy balanced diet.

5. Steps to embed behaviour change to build new habits.

Speaking at the launch, report co-chair Professor Paul Greenhaff (The Physiological Society and the University of Nottingham, UK), said: “Our survey shows that over a quarter of over-50s are less physically active than prepandemic. Given the role of physical activity in maintaining health, this is a cause for real concern and it is likely that the health of older adults will have diminished as a direct consequence of the restrictions necessary to protect people from COVID-19.

“For some older adults, a reduction in physical activity is likely to accelerate frailty development, perhaps tilting the balance between just being able to do something, such as rising from a chair, and not. This has significant consequences for independent living and healthcare provision.”

Fellow co-chair Dr Alison Giles (formerly of Centre for Ageing Better) added: “It is clear that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the physical activity levels of older people which is worrying given that a high proportion of older adults were already inactive before the pandemic. COVID-19 has demonstrated the need for public health interventions to build a more resilient, healthier nation.

“Our proposed National Post-Pandemic Resilience Programme would be a joined-up system of support to provide older people with tailored advice and guidance on how to safely increase their activity levels post-pandemic.

We want to see evidence-based behaviour change approaches and a variety of activities on offer to support older adults adopt physically active lives for the longterm.”

CAN YOU find the link between the first record player, a revolutionary American educator, a drummer who does not wear shoes, the anthem of the European Union, a rubber bat with no head and an attractive young actor and dancer?

On reflection, that looks a little too obscure, so here is a slightly less complex question with the same answer!

What do these 7 people have in common?

Thomas Edison, Helen Keller, Evelyn Glennie, The EU, Ludwig van Beethoven, Ozzie Osbourne and Rose Ayling Ellis.

LEFT THE EASIER ones till the end, and you may have worked out the answer by now. In case you didn’t, I will reveal all. The link between these seemingly disconnected names and facts is deafness.

These people are, or in some cases were, deaf. They also achieved a certain amount of fame through their skills and abilities despite this adversity.

Incredible as it may seem, Thomas Edison, inventor of the first phonograph was partially deaf! I can only suggest that inventing the first machine to amplify music must have been quite a challenge.

Helen Keller who became deaf, blind and mute at the age of 18 months went on to become a remarkable educator, disability activist and author.

The “shoeless” drummer, is Evelyn Glennie who despite her deafness is one of the world`s leading percussionists.

Whilst performing with the most prestigious orchestras she does not wear shoes, as having bare feet enables

her to feel the vibrations of her drum strokes.

The Ode to Joy which was adopted as an “all embracing” anthem for the European Union was written by a profoundly deaf Ludwig Van Beethoven.

Depending on your age and musical taste Ozzie Osbourne could be known to you for his years as the outrageous lead singer for Black Sabbath. He also became infamous for biting the head off a bat during a lively concert some years back. Years of heavy metal music has, it seems, understandably rendered him partially deaf.

The subject of deafness was recently brought into the glare of public attention following the remarkable performance of the actor Rose Ayling Ellis during Strictly Come Dancing. Her abilities conquering intricate dance routines despite her hearing problems, displayed remarkable determination and courage. Like Evelyn Glennie, she also apparently feels the musical vibrations through her bare feet.

Another reason for investigating this subject has been my own increasing difficulty hearing.

Watching recent films on TV, it seems that many modern actors spend too much time mumbling. I have no problem when watching older films with the likes of David Niven who spoke very clearly! There must be a message there somewhere. I have to admit, however, that the advancing years are making it obvious that my hearing is beginning to fail. Whilst selective deafness can be very helpful when dodging instructions from my dearly beloved wife, the issue is becoming increasingly important. I am not alone.

There is good news. Modern technology has improved the quality, the size and the shape of hearing aids. There are many options available and as ever, it is very important to get expert advice before making any decisions.

Some good news: The NHS will provide hearing aids free of charge and the first port of call should be your own GP. More good news: It may simply be that the removing of ear wax will suffice.

Not such good news: Inevitably these days there is a charge for this service.

It may well be that your hearing problem is limited to just one ear. You may have other physical issues that can affect your hearing which is why a quick chat with your GP is a sensible starting point.

He or she can arrange to pass you into the hands of the NHS or perhaps on to an NHS provider. There you will find an audiologist who will conduct a formal hearing test. Depending on your local area and the unfortunate delays caused by Covid, when using the NHS this process may not be speedy.

The NHS provides a great service for those with hearing loss. Although this service isn't right for everyone, it does offer free hearing aids and aftercare.

The types of apparatus available on the NHS, however, combined with limited access to modern technology means that there are possibly more appealing solutions available in the open marketplace.

Technology has led to some dramatic improvements in the quality and size of hearing aids. There are now any number of commercial companies who offer a thoroughly professional service. These can of course

Flawed Technology Means We Still Need Cash

URING the pandemic we had a significant increase in many retail and leisure outlets refusing to accept cash in favour of alternative electronic payment methods. Principally done for fear that handling cash could increase the potential of spreading the coronavirus, despite most experts claiming it doesn’t really increase the potential of catching diseases.

However, ending cash has been a topical subject well before the Covid pandemic. Financial institutions and big business have been lobbying to go cashless for some years now. But many, including me, remain wary. There’s lots of reasons, but my main issue is that electronic alternatives are prone to glitches and faults.

Recently the butchers where I live had a faulty card reader, so they could only take cash. It took over a week before it was fixed. A few years ago,

I remember going to the ASDA in Gosforth and seeing huge queues at the cash machines. The store manager explained that all the checkout card readers were down and they could only take cash.

This problem wasn’t isolated to just this branch

either; it affected every ASDA in the country and, I gather, lasted most of the day. So without cash these businesses would have lost a considerable amount of trade, not to mention the disappointment and exasperation of their customers too.

In many establishments, particularly smaller ones, the card reading devices are now portable and rely on Wi-Fi to work. In areas where Wi-Fi is poor they often can’t connect, and payment is rejected. On one occasion, I was in a grocers when it took four times to eventually connect and 28

take a card payment. I would have paid cash but didn’t have enough on me to cover the bill. So much for contactless payments speeding things up!

While we still have cash, we have a stable and reliable alternative when the technology fails. So I hope it stays.

Gizmos, gadgets and computers are now so much a part of our daily lives, the younger generation find it difficult to imagine what it must have been like to grow up without them. My children often laugh at how we did things thirty years ago and wonder how we coped back then without the enormous array of electronic gadgetry now at our disposal.

The Microsoft Windows PC was launched in 1983. Ever since computing power and technology has seemingly advanced at an expediential rate.

Indeed, take a quick look around your room now and you’ll see many examples of technological advancements in everyday existence that were mere pipe dreams a few years ago. Almost every business, service and household use computers and almost everyone owns a laptop, tablet or smartphone.

Indeed, it does seem these days we are encouraged to do almost everything online, be it working, banking, shopping, communicating, research or leisure. The flipside or ‘butterfly effect’ is a society that is fast withdrawing into itself with people who no longer speak to each other and communities that no longer look out for each other.

We’re told the technological advancements of today exist to make life easier for everyone, yet we’ve never been more stressed and overworked than before, largely in part to the fact that much of the technology we are compelled into adopting is not that secure or stable and often prone to viruses and cyber-hacking.

I have noticed that, on a regular basis, all of our technological gizmos, gadgets and apps undergo regular updates to fix a multitude of glitches, software problems or security issues. Indeed, be it the NHS, the MOD or British Airways, there is almost daily news of one organisation or industry Ability Needs Magazine

being crippled by computer glitches and technological failure. Here are a few recent examples: Elon Musk was forced to apologise to users and owners of his Tesla cars when they were unable to use their phone apps to start them after a software glitch. It seems, too, that in general, modern keyless cars are much easier to steal than their alternative old style key ones.

Provision of customer service: It seems many business, institutions and public services are driving their customer service operations online.

At the same time making it frustratingly awkward and time consuming to deal face-to-face or via telephone. Then there is the issue of security too.

As the NHS seeks a digital overhaul and HMRC pushing ahead with a digital tax drive, despite admitting data security failures.

Our health is important yet, since its launch, the NHS Test & Trace app has repeatedly crashed and failed causing untold misery, inconvenience and hassle to travellers and key workers.

A recent newspaper article reported that a Russian space weapon successfully obliterated a defunct Soviet-era spy satellite. Illustrating the ease at which Russia could do the same to satellites that underpin a huge range of western commercial activities, including telecommunications, banking, weather forecasting, GPS services and satellite television. The vast majority of these services and technologies have no real or quick alternatives or back up should they fail.

Perhaps, when a new technological solution is being developed or promoted, we ought to pause and ask who the real beneficiary is. Will it be easier for the supplier or user? What happens if it fails and, like cash, what are the alternatives and security implications? Balance what will be gained, against what could be lost. In other words, ‘just because we can, doesn’t mean we should.’

The National Robotarium partners with Leuchie House to trial assisted living technologies he National Robotarium, delivered by HeriotWatt University and the University of Edinburgh, has partnered with Leuchie House to trial technologies that could help people with assisted living needs and those who care for them gain greater independence.

One million people in Scotland live with a neurological condition, and 10% are disabled as a result. For many, both professional and unpaid carers provide essential support at home to carry out daily tasks and enable access to leisure activities that support wellbeing.

However, emerging technologies have been shown to help return independence.

The partnership will see researchers from the National Robotarium’s Assisted Living Lab work in collaboration with guests at Leuchie House to develop advanced technologies that address specific needs. Robotics and AI technologies will be developed to help people with a wide range of assistive needs. For example, to provide support after a stroke and to monitor for deterioration in conditions such as dementia. By combining sensor technology and robotics, data can be collected over longer periods of time, helping to monitor patients and alert carers to when a care package may need to be reviewed.

Professor Lynne Baillie, Head of the Assisted Living Lab at the National Robotarium said, “Our partnership with Leuchie House will allow us to work collaboratively with their guests and carers to develop assisted living technology that truly works for users. We will engage directly with individuals to learn more about their unique needs and hear their ideas about how robotic and sensing technologies could provide support.

“Guests will then be invited to our Assisted Living Lab at the National Robotarium to participate in trials of technologies designed to meet these needs in a realistic home setting.”

Leuchie House is a national charity dedicated to supporting people living with the long-term effects of a range of neurological conditions such as MS, Parkinson’s, MND and stroke, through individualised short respite breaks, as well as an essential break for their carers.

Mark Bevan, CEO at Leuchie House said, “Leuchie House is traditionally known for our class leading residential short breaks and, building from this strength, we have been introducing guests and those who care for them to the benefits of enabling technology, which can restore independence and selfmanagement. Our rooms for example are equipped with voice activated environmental controls, to show our guests the art of the possible.

“Our Technology team works with guests to install similar technologies at home, giving them and those who care for them more independence and complementing residential short breaks. This exciting partnership between the National Respite Centre and the National Robotarium is a further example of how we can build on the past and re-imagine respite for the future. It is a key part of our creation of a new National Centre for Enabling Technology.”

Examples of tasks that technology can help users complete include opening doors, switching lights on and off, opening and closing curtains, watching TV, listening to the radio and making phone calls.

In addition to extending the technological support available for individuals, the project with the National Robotarium aims to assist carers and reduce the ongoing pressure on the social care sector.

By working in collaboration with guests, carers and families at Leuchie House, it is hoped the technology developed at the National Robotarium could provide support to individuals not only at the centre, but across Scotland, the UK and beyond.

TV sitcom Family Guy has been praised for challenging ‘problematic stereotypes of dwarfism’ in a revealing new academic study HE ANIMATED series, created by Seth MacFarlane, has long courted controversy for its near-the-knuckle humour, and has been the target of numerous taste and indecency complaints. But Dr Erin Pritchard, a Lecturer in Disability and Education at Liverpool Hope University, suggests it sets an example for others to follow - because it pokes fun at outdated social attitudes, rather than making disabled people the butt of gags.

Writing in the Canadian Journal of Disability Studies, Dr Pritchard argues: “In all scenes included in this analysis, the characters with dwarfism were portrayed in an ordinary manner, dressed in everyday clothes, often partaking in everyday activities and thus were part of society. They were not portrayed in any tokenised manner akin to dwarfism, such as being humorous or mythical.

“The characters with dwarfism were not perceived as childlike or humorous, but rather other characters perceived them as such to make an implicit joke indicating that society’s perception of and interactions with people with dwarfism was the crux of the joke.”

The way the laughs are constructed in Family Guy, which is regularly shown on ITV2 in the UK, might also help to change attitudes for the better.

Dr Pritchard, a core member of Hope’s Centre for Cultural Disability Studies, argues: “Humour has the potential to expose common social attitudes experienced by people with dwarfism in society. This can help to educate people about dwarfism, especially when considering that living experience encounters are rare.”

The key scenes Dr Pritchard analysed showed how Family Guy works to ‘discourage the audience from laughing at disability whilst still including disabled people in everyday situations.’

One cut-away gag from Episode 10, season 5, sees a group of three ‘midgets’ in a supermarket asking a slightly-taller person with dwarfism if he would mind retrieving an item for them from a shelf too high for them to reach - something which makes the person with dwarfism extremely happy.

While Dr Pritchard takes great exception with the

use of the term ‘midget’, she adds: “The scene subtly exposes the way nondisabled people usually feel good when assisting disabled people.”

A key element Dr Pritchard commends Family Guy for is portraying people with dwarfism as ‘ordinary people with ordinary lives’. And the series’ set-ups poke fun at members of the public who ‘infantilise’ people with dwarfism.

In another cutaway gag, ‘The old man and the midget’, two people are sitting at a bus stop - an old man and another younger male with dwarfism. The person with dwarfism is seen as just an ‘ordinary member of society’ going about his day.

But Dr Pritchard writes: “The older man is seen staring at the person with dwarfism who after a brief silence asks, ‘Sir, will you please stop staring at me’ to which the older man replies, ‘Where’s the rest of you?’ in a rather angry tone.

“While it’s true that a joke is made towards the height of the person with dwarfism, the scene simultaneously exposes social ignorance towards dwarfism and highlights some of the social issues they encounter, including being stared at and being asked intrusive questions.”

Dr Pritchard is speaking from experience as someone with ‘achondroplasia’, the most common form of dwarfism. And while she admits that not everyone will share the same viewpoint on Family Guy, and will interpret the jokes differently depending on their world view, she adds: “I have dwarfism and have experienced the unwanted consequences of reductive representations of dwarfism in the media. For example, it is not unusual for me to be asked ‘where my six little friends are’ or to be called names relating to characters with dwarfism, such as ‘Mini-me’ and ‘Oompa Loompa’.

“This makes me increasingly critical of depictions of dwarfism in the media. However, when watching Family Guy I have noticed a difference in how people with dwarfism are represented in comparison to other shows and can actually relate to the characters and their situation. And I find the humour quite refreshing as it does not rely on crafting jokes from existing stereotypes of dwarfism.”

Winter Driving (Some Gentle Hints)

by John Killick TORM ARWEN hit the UK at the end of November and the snow quickly followed! We don’t often get a lot of the white stuff these days so many, especially young drivers, haven’t experienced driving on snow and ice.

The editor, since he doesn’t like the thought of his readership being involved in road traffic accidents, has asked me if I can write a piece this time about driving in bad weather. So all you old duffers like me who have experience driving on snow may skip this article, but for those who don’t here are some hints on survival in bad weather.

Please read what follows as hints on staying alive. Others would probably say, “Well for basics ok, but what about so and so!” It is not a final say on the matter but just a general guide. With this in mind the best advice anybody can give is, “Stay at Home”! Or, in other words, “If your journey is not essential don’t make it!” In my early days we didn’t have four-wheel drives, most cars were fitted with rear wheel drive only which made them spinning machines! You are a lot luckier but that doesn’t mean that spins are impossible! Just watch any track racing and those drivers practice constantly for such things!

Now I also know that main roads are normally well gritted these days but with all due respect to the council’s gritting department, which tries really

hard to keep the roads open, they can do little about snow falling on fresh grit then freezing solid.

So, how can you tell if this has happened?

You can’t tell. The first you will know about it is when you touch your brakes and either nothing happens, or you suddenly discover you are facing the wrong way! In the first instance you are now sliding into the back of the vehicle in front! What to do? Firstly, triple the braking distance you would normally allow for. This gives you plenty of time to think or run off that icy stretch and for your brakes to start working. If on a rise, take your foot off the accelerator and allow gravity to help.

On one occasion on a down slope I drove the front of my car into the snow on the side of the road and used that to break me. Whatever you decide is appropriate, you will require that extra braking distance. In a spin, take your foot of the accelerator and turn into the spin. This will usually bring you out of the spin, if not pray that some poor bloke isn’t coming the other way!

Black Ice! This normally forms on wet roads and can be picked out by noticing that the shiny stuff has just gone a flat matt colour. I had an accident in these conditions many years ago on the M18. I had stopped for a line of stationery traffic when I spotted a pair of headlights coming right at my rear end and they were not slowing! Bang! I got out to have a quiet word with the other driver and went straight onto my backside! Ouch! Black ice!

Driving on falling snow! In a blizzard your visibility will be very little. Switch on all lights including fogs in daylight hours. This is so that other drivers will see you, not so you can see where you are going.

Speed; this is difficult since too fast and you will write your car off, too slow and you will bog down on the first drift you come to. I have found that 15 to 25 mph usually is about right, but it does depend on the conditions so don’t take that as gospel.

Best action? If you can find one, then get behind a gritting machine leaving plenty of braking distance and pray that he is going your way.

Make sure your screen washers are full with plenty of antifreeze and that your wipers are in good order. The other thing I used to do when I was a field engineer towards the end of September was to place a good arctic weight sleeping bag along with a length of hose, an old army-trenching tool and some emergency rations in the car. When averaging 300 miles a day all over Northern Britain getting stuck was an ever-present likelihood, and I had a wish to live!

I think everyone in this country should get skidpan training but that is expensive so probably isn’t going to happen. A much cheaper option is to find a nice empty car park at the first sign of snow and preferably with the aid of somebody who knows what they are doing, try a few spins and learn how to control them where you are not likely to cause any damage. When I was in the RAF we used to use an empty aircraft pan for this.

OK, that’s a few gentle hints. I hope they will give you some idea should you have to use your car in extreme winter weather. To finish, the only safe driving on snow and ice is not to use your car at all. I have plenty of experience and some training in driving in these conditions and I can assure you that my car stays at home in these conditions now I am retired!

Especially in winter, the weather can be unpredictable, so it is even more important to be prepared before you head out. The shorter days mean it’s more likely you’ll be travelling outside of daylight hours. If you need to travel after dark, make sure you’re as visible as possible. Many of the larger scooters have lights, but if yours doesn’t, it may be worth buying a highvisibility jacket or vest so that you’re more noticeable.

If you have a smartphone, you may also want to consider downloading a weather forecasting app so that you can check for any changes whilst out and about. In the event of snow, or where snow is forecast, it’s really best to avoid any journeys that aren’t absolutely necessary.

Once the app is downloaded on your phone, if you ever break down, simply open the app, click ‘Rescue me’ to generate a text message with the coordinates of your exact location and press send.

TIME TO START TALKING SLEEP IN THE COMMUNITY ATIONAL award winning The Sleep Charity is all set to get the nation chatting about sleep with the launch of its new Sleep Talkers wellbeing scheme. The brand-new service is developed by The Sleep Charity and funded by the National Lottery.

Said Amy Wilson, Sleep Talkers Project Manager: “Using a ‘Train the Trainer’ approach, the service will train organisations and their volunteers in the basics of sleep and give them the knowledge and skills needed to empower people to begin those important conversations around how to achieve a better night’s sleep.”

The new ‘Sleep Talkers’ will share information and guidance about how to spot the signs of sleep difficulties and provide early intervention support in

the heart of communities on a national level. Other key goals include reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation, improving mental wellbeing and growing the network of Sleep Talker volunteers, as well as those who can access support through the project.

Whilst the initial focus will be the SEND community, the charity will be broadening its support to include other key communities such as older adults and ethnic minorities over the next 12 months.

The project will also be evaluated by Dr Simon Durrant, Director of the Sleep & Cognition Laboratory at the University of Lincoln and Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director of Research in the School of Psychology, to provide an evidence base which will enable the service to grow in scale over the next two years, reaching people across the UK in a wide range of communities.

EVERYDAY SUPERHEROES FROM THE DISABILITY COMMUNITY FIND THEIR POWER ONCE AGAIN AT WINTER WONDERWHEELS EVENT INTER WONDERWHEELS – part of the Superhero Series, the UK’s only mass-participation sports series dedicated to people with disabilities – took place on 5 December with people aged 270 taking on the fun competitive event.

Powered by Marvel, the event brought people with any kind of disability together to compete in a unique, solo or team challenge; cycling, walking, running or pushing 1km, 5km or 10km at 2012 Summer Paralympic and Olympic venue, Dorney Lake, Windsor.

As per usual, the event throws out restrictive rules and regulations and encourages participants to use any method of support required to complete their challenge - all ‘gadgets and gismos’ were welcomed on the course, from day chairs and bikes to walking frames and trikes.

Participants could also choose between flying solo or teaming up with ‘Sidekicks’ (non-disabled family and friends) to take on the unique challenges with as much or as little time and support as needed. With a huge emphasis on fun, Winter Wonderwheels participants and their ‘Sidekicks’ were also encouraged to come along dressed as their favourite Superhero with a dash of festive sparkles In addition to the three challenges (1km / 5km / 10km), was the ‘celebrity race’ for members of the public who won the chance to unite with high-profile Celebrity Team Captains from TV and sport by sharing their super stories. This year’s event saw celebrities including Bake Off star and TV presenter Briony Williams; Paralympic equestrian Sophie Christiansen; Paralympic cyclist, Megan Giglia; Paralympic canoeist, Anne Usher; Paralympic field athelete Stephan Miller and Military Parasport athlete Dave Henson; led competition winners in their very own teams as they completed the course.

Getting into the Super Hero theme of the day, celebrites super’d up with some festive fun, but this event has never been about the celebrities, it’s about the Everyday Superheroes who boldly face what life throws at them. At The Superhero Series there’s almost too many incredible stories to mention, but here’s two that are particularly SUPER.ååith Cerebral Palsy when she was 3 years old. Over the past few years Sienna has worked SUPER hard to get where she is now, with weekly physio sessions and training she uses exercise and sport to build her strength, balance and fitness.

Sienna will not only be taking on the celebrity 5K challenge with Paralympic champion Sophie Christiasen, she will also be taking on an amazing 10K with her personal champion and Sidekick Dad. Another stand- out story of the day and fellow competition winners is the SUPER SEN school Clifton Primary. This school in Birmingham is positively BURSTING with SUPER- sonic Superheroes. They use their SUPER team work powers to work together in getting active and having FUN! This huge team of Superheroes are a SUPER force that can’t be reckoned with. The students of Clifton Primary schooål will be making their way down to Dorney Lake to take on the SUPER 5K challenge. Four SUPER students Amila, Jibreel, Charlie and Ahmed will represent Clifton in the celebrity 5K mission alongside TV presenter, colomnist and Bake- Off star Briony Williams.

The Superhero Series is founded and run by Paralympian, Sophia Warner, who has been involved in disability sport for more than 25 years. Speaking of why live events are so important for the disability community, Sophia says: “ This was the first time the Superhero community reunited in what feels like a huge amount of time. They have been particularly hard hit during these times and have not only been more at risk from serious illness but have also been more isolated. We are so happy to see everyone back out together. As well as the live event, a further 1,500 people also chose to do the At Home Winter Wonderwheels virtual version - these have been a life- line for theå disability community over the past 2 years”.

Art with Heart’s new show Stan roars into venues across the UK for Spring tour 10th February – 20th March 2022

ELEBRATING the power of play, the joy of communication and the positive force of friendship, Stan (named after the T-Rex at Manchester Museum) is a powerful and poignant new production, commissioned by Z-arts and developed by Art with Heart with the help of over 200 deaf and hearing primary school children from Greater Manchester. The production positively demonstrates how we can overcome language barriers, and challenges preconceptions of deafness.

Sam (Ross Thompson) is a happy, dinosaur loving 8year-old whose world turns upside down after his parents separate. As he takes himself off to the far end of the school field, he meets Alex (Alexandra James), a deaf girl with a vivid imagination - and an impressive collection of dinosaurs. Alex is from a proud deaf family and despite being socially isolated at school, she is strong, smart, sociable and imaginative. The pair form an unlikely friendship and when things at home become too difficult for Sam, Alex whisks him away on an astonishing adventure to meet the almighty Stan, the gigantic T-Rex at Manchester Museum.

Stan from Sarah Emmott (Secret Diaries, Declaration) is written and performed in English and British Sign Language and embeds creative captions within the set.

The play will be accompanied by post-performance workshops, an education pack including a video of BSL signs to help hearing and deaf children communicate, three Deaf Awareness training events and a dinosaur object handling box with some fascinating objects from Manchester Museum’s collections. The postperformance workshop will be BSL Interpreted and has been designed with both deaf and hearing children in mind.

Sarah Emmott commented: “Growing up, my parents lived very separate lives (so) my imagination was both

my safe escape and my resource to help me understand myself, my feelings and our family situation. I wanted to create a play that reflected how vital imaginative play is as a form of communication, not only with others but with ourselves.”

Z-arts commented: “Art with Heart have put children at the heart of the creation of Stan and tackled tricky issues whilst creating positive representation and a super fun show for families to enjoy.
