Motability Vehicle Supply Issues and Delayed Orders
The global car market is currently facing a number of challenges, all of which are leading to supply issues, delivery delays and a shortage of many new makes and models. Whether you’re looking to order your first car on the Scheme, choose your next car or you’re currently awaiting delivery, we understand that you may have a few questions about what is causing the current delivery delays and what you can do if your order is affected.
The main issue affecting new car supply is a global shortage of semiconductors, or ‘chips’, which feature in most electrical items from washing machines and home computers, to TVs and new cars. Each new car features around 1,500 of these chips, which act as the ‘brain’ of the vehicle, but high demand for electrical items during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a shortage of semiconductors. This shortage is expected to continue throughout 2022.
On top of this, factories across the world are continuing to be affected by staff shortages due to COVID-19 isolation requirements and wider supply chain problems caused by the pandemic. These supply chain issues can often mean that vehicles in production are unable to be completed due to delayed parts, leading to further delays and changing delivery dates. In many cases, cars are taking more than six months to be delivered.
Although we are working hard to keep the Scheme as affordable as possible, you may notice that there are fewer cars available than in previous years and in many cases, Advance Payments are higher than you may be used to. Vehicles are also being removed from the Scheme at short notice at the request of manufacturers and dealers are often struggling to get reliable information on delivery dates due to the various factors affecting new car supply.
If you are looking to order a new car on the Motability Scheme, our online Car Search tool has the most up to date information for the cars currently available on the Scheme. Your dealer should be able to give you an idea of the current delivery times, but they won’t be able to speed things up and the information they have might change, so please bear with them. If you are looking to order your first car on the Scheme, we would recommend you start your vehicle search as soon as you can. Most manufacturers are experiencing delays, so before you order your car, please check the expected delivery times with the dealership. You may find that a comparable car from a different manufacturer could be available sooner, so it’s important to speak to a few different dealers before you place your order. If you are approaching the end of your current lease, we would recommend that you start the search for your next car as soon as you can. You can then place your next order three months before the end of your existing lease. Once you’ve placed your order, we can extend the lease on your current vehicle until your new one is ready. You’ll also be covered by our price guarantee once you’ve placed your next order, meaning that the Advance Payment of the vehicle at the time your order is accepted is the price you will pay, even if the price changes before you collect your new vehicle. Given the various factors affecting the new car market at this time, it is possible that your expected delivery date might change more than once. Dealers are reliant on updates from the manufacturer and in some cases build dates and delivery timeframes may need to change for reasons out of the dealer’s control. If you’re an existing customer and this happens, please be reassured that we will continue to extend your lease for as long as needed to ensure your continued mobility.

How can dogs help children with autism?
APRIL IS Autism Acceptance Month, the month to change the conversation around autism and raise awareness and support for those with autism. And on 2 April communities around the world celebrated World Autism Awareness Day. The 15th annual World Autism Awareness Day looks to increase understanding and acceptance of autism and helps support those who have autism.
To celebrate World Autism Day and Autism Acceptance Month, leading pet insurer petGuard wants to highlight the remarkable role that autism service dogs play in helping young children. Can a child with autism get a service dog? In the UK, autism assistance dogs can support children with autism and their wider family. According to the British Medical Association, one in 100 children in the UK have been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. People can apply for an autism service dog through one of the coalition of registered charities who provide assistance dogs through Assistance Dogs UK.
How do autism dogs help?
Autism dogs are trained specifically with safety and companionship in mind. Young children with autism often find it difficult to adapt to changes in their routine and can find it tricky to make friends with other children their age. Having an autism service dog allows children to discover their independence and provides them with a friend that they can trust. Service dogs are highly trained to increase the confidence of young children and ease stress and anxiety. Service dogs can also assist with things like speech therapy and road safety.
Many support dogs tend to be larger breeds such as Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Standard Poodles and German Shepherds. When choosing one, it is important to consider multiple factors, such as dog’s adaptability, sociability and energy level.
Head of Marketing for petGuard, Alex Bennett said: “Children with autism can face a number of challenges and having a friend they can trust can be hugely beneficial for their development. At petGuard, we’re proud to highlight the ways that our canine companions are able to provide unwavering support to young people with autism.”
Leading pet insurance provider, petGuard has been protecting dogs – including support dogs for over 30 years. That’s why it is important to highlight the role of a support dog and raise awareness.

They have over 40 products available nationwide on the Motability scheme, including a full range of hand controls, hand accelerators, person hoists, transfer plates, electric hatch openers and many more. Specifically it is their unique products and bespoke services which have been drawing attention throughout the industry and this helps to secure their place as one of the leading companies in their field.

One of their most popular unique products is the Rear and Front Seated Person Lift, which is a lifting device designed to transfer a person from a wheelchair/scooter to a vehicle. The small dimensions of the product allow it to be installed into a wide range of vehicles and it is suitable for both front and rear seating positions. It is also the ideal solution for electric vehicles due to the fact that it is mounted to the BPillar and not the floor, which can be an issue with electric vehicles due to the position of the battery.
Another unique product of theirs is the Floor Mounted Push/Pull Brake/Accelerator. This works in the same way as any other Push/Pull, in that the driver operates the brake and accelerator by hand with a pushing or pulling motion. However, the fact that it is floor mounted allows for several unique safety features that are not present with other Push/Pulls on the market. This design allows for full movement of the steering wheel, allowing the driver to have the wheel at the optimum position for them. There is also no removal or interference with the airbag – on many standard Push/Pulls the airbag has to be removed or disconnected, but with the BAS Push/Pull customer safety is never compromised. It is also £0 customer contribution on the Motability scheme, meaning you can have this product for free when you get your new Motability car!
Finally, if you’re looking for something completely different, then the BAS Thumb Touch Accelerator could be for you! This adaptation offers you full acceleration control with either the right or left thumb and also allows freedom to move your hand whilst driving. The flexibility and size of this adaptation is a real selling point for its users!

To find out more about these unique products and all of their products, you can visit their website www.basnw.co.uk or call them on 0161 776 1594.

Two-year research project results In Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment

THE CURRICULUMFramework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (CFVI) has been developed by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), VICTAR University of Birmingham, Professional Association for the Vision Impairment Education Workforce (VIEW) and Thomas Pocklington Trust to support children and young people with vision impairment aged from 0 - 25 access an appropriate and equitable education.
Children and young people with vision impairment need to be actively taught a range of independent learning, mobility, everyday living, and social communication skills. Currently access to those learning areas and specialists who teach them can vary from region to region meaning many young people are missing out.
The organisations plan to engage with Government education departments to ensure the framework reaches every child and young person with VI in the UK, through measures such as being referred to in official guidance or receiving statutory status.
The CFVI presents outcomes within 11 teaching areas and its main aim is to clarify and define the elements of specialist skill development, interventions and best practice support that are considered to be essential for children and young people with vision impairment.
RNIB Head of Education, Caireen Sutherland said: “We are delighted to have been part of this vital project which has resulted in the launch of the Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment. It has been a fantastic cross-sector collaboration and development.
“Having the CFVI in place will provide a structure and best practice reference for families, young people and professionals alike to refer to in order to advocate for the input a child or young person with vision impairment needs and deserves.
“We hope the framework will address the jigsaw provision and ensure children and young people with vision impairment get access to the specialists and opportunities to develop skills they need and that this in turn will improve their life outcomes.”
Joanne Lomas from Wrexham in Wales is mother to a 13-year-old boy who has a severe vision impairment. Joanne, who also has sight loss, has had to fight for her son since he was born, from getting an accurate diagnosis in his early years through to the ongoing work to ensure he has the right support in school. She gave up work to apply herself full-time to ensuring her son gets what he needs at the right time.
Joanne said: “I know how complex the education support system is and how much potential there is for things to be missed and for my son to fall behind. I feel that the CFVI highlights the importance of early intervention and had this been in place for my son would have helped him to get the right support earlier. This framework provides a clear structure and language which will be incredibly helpful for parents when advocating for their children and navigating the system and knowing what to expect or ask for.”
Laura Hughes from Devon is mother to Tiri (23) who has vision impairment and is a fourth-year medical student at Oxford University.
Laura said: “Education is where our children spend the best part of their week. If the hours they spend at school are not going well this can have a detrimental effect on all areas of their lives. The CFVI will bring each child or young person with vision impairment and their parent or carer into a common pool of knowledge and support regardless of where they live and what other challenges they face. It will make an invaluable contribution to so many children and young people and help them achieve their potential.”
The eleven teaching areas of the CFVI are:
1. Facilitating an Inclusive World, 2. Sensory Development, 3. Communication, 4. Literacy, 5. Habilitation: Orientation and Mobility, 6. Habilitation: Independent Living Skills, 7. Accessing Information, 8. Technology, 9. Health: Social, Emotional, Mental & Physical Wellbeing, 10. Social, Sports and Leisure, 11. Preparing for Adulthood

New films from QEF and the CAA make flying with a hidden disability less daunting
Disability charity Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for Disabled People (QEF) and the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have released new films to support people with hidden disabilities to fly with confidence. There are 4 films available providing expert advice and personal insights from people with autism, a stoma, dementia and aphasia, helping to make travelling by air less daunting.
According to the Department for Work and Pensions 21% of people in the UK have a disability (1 in 5), which breaks down as follows:
48% have mobility difficulties (1 in 2) 36% experience stamina/breathing/fatigue difficulties (1 in 3) 27% experience mental health difficulties (1 in 4) 16% experience memory problems (1 in 6) 13% experience hearing loss (1 in 8) 12% have a sight impairment (1 in 8) 14% have learning difficulties (1 in 7)
These figures highlight the number of people who are living with hidden and / or physical disabilities and for whom air travel can be more daunting due to the additional elements they need to consider.
QEF and the CAA wanted to show that air travel is possible with a hidden disability and so it was important that the films included real life experiences from people living with autism, a stoma, dementia and aphasia. Each person talks through the steps they follow to navigate the challenges their condition may create, so that they can fly with confidence. There is also useful information and advice to support people who may be held back by concerns about what the experience would be like for them.
Each of these films have been developed with the support of specialist organisations including Livability, Alzheimer’s Society, Plymouth University, Colostomy UK, Dyscover, Autism Support Crawley, Thumbs Up World, Gatwick Airport and easyJet.
The films were launched by James Fremantle, the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s Manager for Consumer Policy and Enforcement, at QEF’s Mobility Open Day on 24th March. Several of the people who feature in the films had the opportunity to watch their films for the first time in the company of each other, which was a really positive experience for everyone involved.
James Fremantle said: “Disabled passengers have legal rights to access air travel and receive the support needed to do so. Part of my role at the CAA is to ensure these rights are protected and people have the knowledge and information they need to travel by air in comfort.
This includes people with hidden disabilities such as those who have starred in our films. The CAA is the world’s first aviation authority to publish guidance to airports and airlines specifically on providing assistance and support to passengers with hidden disabilities. This series of films provides personal insights and lots of useful information for anyone thinking about air travel if they have, or are travelling with someone who has, dementia, aphasia, a stoma or autism."
Leo Visconti, QEF’s Director of Engagement and Partnerships said: “I would like to thank everyone who helped to make these new films about how to fly with a hidden disability, but especially Michael, Iffrah, Paul, Penny, Claire and Sandy who have each bravely shared their own experiences in order to help other people. QEF is committed to enabling disabled people to be as independent as possible and I hope these films will give confidence to so many people who may not have considered air travel previously.”
These 4 films are available at www.qef.org.uk/flyinghidden-disability and on the CAA’s website. They complete the series about flying with a disability that started with the ground-breaking film focusing on Flying as a Powered Wheelchair User, which followed Jon and his Dad through every step of a journey by air. Both films can be viewed at

Driving Mobility to help more disabled people travel confidently with £1.5 million Government funding
Following the successful pilot of its ‘HUBs’ accessible travel information service, Driving Mobility is delighted to be continuing this initiative for non-drivers thanks to a share of funding from the UK Government who today announced a £2.5 million package to support disabled people.

£1.5 million has been allocated to Driving Mobility, the national charity that coordinates driving and mobility assessment centres across the UK, so that it can expand its ‘HUBs’ inclusive transport advice and signposting service.
Part of today’s official announcement from The Department for Transport:
The Government has today (29 March 2022) announced a £2.5 million package to support disabled people travel more confidently on our transport network as it reopens after Covid. - £2.5 million package to improve the accessibility of transport for disabled people - Accessibility Minister announces £1.5 million to help disabled people travel more confidently - £1m new funding to enhance access to lifeline ferry services
The new funding will include £1.5m allocated to support all 13 Driving Mobility Centres across England roll out a ‘HUBs Mobility Service’. These vital services help people stay mobile after they have been advised to stop driving or if they are unable to learn to drive due to their disabilities, offering them advice on alternatives such as powered wheelchairs, community transport and local services.
Driving Mobility is supported by the Department for Transport and provides a range of services including ‘fitness to drive’ assessments from its nationwide centres. Led by Occupational Therapists and Approved Driving Instructors, these services strive to facilitate personal mobility and driving independence for clients mostly signposted from the DVLA, Motability, Police and the NHS.
If driving is not a viable option for clients, its new HUBs service offers impartial advice on transport alternatives such as community transport and accessible bus, coach, rail and plane travel. Driving Mobility can advise clients on accessible venues and locations along with lifestyle choices and inclusive activities.

A System “Ravaged by the Pandemic”: Mencap Responds to the Spring Statement and Calls for More Social Care Funding
With no additional funding announced for the social care sector in the Spring Statement, Mencap is calling for an urgent cash injection and longer-term funding targeted at supporting decent pay rises for social care workers – many of whom are paid far too little and will be hit hardest by the ever increasing cost of living.
Edel Harris OBE, Chief Executive of the learning disability charity Mencap, said: “Despite promises to fix social care, despite years of underfunding, and an increasing crisis in the workforce, it is bitterly disappointing not to see any additional funding going into the sector. People with a learning disability, their families and those working in social care are already paying the price of a system ravaged by the pandemic - and things look set to get worse with inflation on a steep rise. "People have told us that their loved ones with a learning disability are stuck at home because of the absence of support. Over 70% of those we surveyed said they spend less time outside the house compared to before the pandemic and half of those say reduced social care support is part of the issue. Services are still closed, staff are spread too thin, and ultimately people's lifelines to the outside world are being cut off.
“I know that the Chancellor has had tough decisions to make in this Spring Budget and things are extremely tight for everyone. But please don’t turn your back on people with a learning disability and their families, and the social care workers who do such amazing work to support people.”

For advice and information about learning disability and Mencap services in your area, contact Mencap’s Freephone Learning Disability Helpline on 0808 808 1111 (10am-3pm, Monday-Friday) or email helpline@mencap.org.uk.
