I spent half a year building a massive tech project just to prove I belonged in the room, only to realise I hated the room. Here's why I walked away from a huge payday to do something incredibly unsexy. I realised that looking successful to strangers means nothing, and true wealth is simply waking up without dreading the day ahead.

A few months ago, a major investment group expressed serious interest in the technology I was building for my recruitment startup. By all conventional metrics, I was on the precipice of a massive, statusdefining win. I should have been thrilled, but instead, I felt like I was attending my own funeral. I was playing the role of the visionary founder perfectly by rolling into virtual boardrooms, pitching systemic change, and fighting the good fight. Behind the camera, however, I was dreading every single day. I was staring at a future that looked incredibly successful on paper and utterly miserable in reality. So, naturally, I killed the project before it could take off.

Society expects disabled and neurodivergent people to constantly justify our place in the room. We are born with a point to prove. Because the world often assumes we cannot function within the standard template, we spend decades building a psychological engine that runs purely on spite and defiance. It is a powerful fuel, but it burns extremely dirty. Ninety-five percent of my drive to build that grand tech project was rooted in ego. I wanted to show the people who underestimated me that I could beat them at their own high-stakes game. I wanted the undeniable status of a massive exit just to prove I wasn't playing catch-up.

But here's the counter-intuitive truth about success: if you're waking up each morning dreading the work, you have not succeeded. A miserable life with a great valuation is still just a miserable life. I realised I needed to starve my ego to find actual satisfaction, which meant pivoting to something entirely different.

My new venture is an online retailer for Trading Card Games (TCG). Let me be the first to point out the absurdity here. I am a grown man who successfully 4

pitched a business on BBC's Dragons' Den and won entrepreneurial awards, and right now, my primary logistical challenge is manually sorting a cardboard box full of shiny wizards and dragons. It isn't a glamorous industry. There are no venture capital meetings. I spend my time buying cheap bulk cards from players leaving the game, grading the inventory by hand, and selling it at retail. It is beautifully, wonderfully unsexy.

This pivot wasn't a random roll of the dice. I’ve loved trading cards since I was a kid. There is a very specific thrill in pulling a rare chase card from a foil pack, and a quiet dignity in gracefully losing in a local tournament. Best of all, it’s a passion I share with my

son. When my physical hardware inevitably acts up and I'm not well enough to handle the daily operations, I know he will happily oblige and step in to help run the store. Having him there means the business keeps running even when I cannot, all built around a hobby we both genuinely love.

That lack of glamour is exactly why it works as the perfect antidote to that dirty spite engine. Nobody claps for you when you sort cardboard. There is no status to hide behind. The quiet repetition forces you to ask yourself whether you actually enjoy the work, completely separate from anyone else's validation.

Could I throw stupid money at this new venture?

Absolutely. I could lease a massive high-street store and pay a hefty monthly subscription for a slick prebuilt website template. I'm avoiding those expensive shortcuts because getting my hands dirty in the machinery is what gets me out of bed. Throwing capital at a new problem is the fastest way to buy complacency. Money acts as a fantastic anaesthetic for incompetence; when you outsource your problems, you stop learning how to solve them.

Building my own digital infrastructure and handling the raw, granular logistics myself highlights a critical difference between two types of friction. In the corporate boardroom, the friction was entirely destructive. It was the exhausting, soul-crushing effort 6

of constantly justifying my existence and proving my worth to strangers. Sorting through a mountain of cards and coding a website with all the bells and whistles from scratch is constructive friction. It is solving tangible problems on my own terms. It is friction by design, and this time, it’s friction I actually enjoy.

Choosing that constructive friction is what finally starved the spite engine for good. We need to stop treating high-status misery as a badge of honour. The professional world will gladly let you trade your actual peace of mind for a prestigious title, just so long as your performance looks inspiring to everyone else.

You don't owe anyone a grand, exhausting success story. True professional leverage isn't about enduring endless misery to secure a payout. It’s having the absolute audacity to look at a rigged game, walk away from the table, and build something entirely unremarkable that actually makes you smile.

Shape the future of subtitles and signing for on-demand TV Ofcom wants you to help shape the future of subtitles and signing on Tier 1 ondemand services.

We know progress can feel slow when you’re facing everyday barriers – missing subtitles, limited signing, inaccessible content. We haven’t stopped pushing Ofcom to get the subtitle and signing quotas in place.

The Media Act 2024 was the result of years of campaigning. Change happens because supporters like you, pushed for it over the years.

For years on-demand services haven’t had to meet the same accessibility standards as traditional TV. That is something we have all been working to change and that campaigning led to the Medica Act. In 2024, new rules were passed that require major ondemand services to meet accessibility quotas: • 80% subtitling • 10% audio description • 5% signing These rules apply to Tier 1 on-demand services with over 500,000 UK users including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, ITVX and Disney+.

Before these quotas come into force, Ofcom needs to consult on their proposed Tier 1 Accessibility Code, the rules that set out how on-demand services will meet these requirements.

They’re asking for your feedback to tell them what you think the quotas should look like. This is a key moment.

Ofcom’s consultation includes proposals such as: • Interim quotas that Tier 1 services must meet before the quotas come into effect.

• Higher subtitling expectations for BBC services.

• Ensuring quotas are met across every platform that a service is available on.

• Requiring services to actively promote accessible content.

More than 70 staff from TransPennine Express learn sign language

Dozens of staff at train operator TransPennine Express (TPE) are learning sign language to help make rail journeys easier for hearing-impaired customers.

So far, more than 70 colleagues, including conductors and customer-facing teams, have completed a course in basic British Sign Language (BSL).

The sessions include teaching everyday phrases such as greetings, numbers and common customer service interactions, as well as terms regularly used on the railway covering tickets, platforms and delays.

According to the Royal National Institute for Deaf People, one in three adults in the UK are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus.

It is estimated that there are 25,000 people who use sign language as their main language across the UK. Andrew McClements, Customer Experience and Transformation Director at TransPennine Express, said: “We’re proud of the enthusiasm our colleagues have shown in taking part in this training. We’re hoping it will help break down barriers and make rail travel more inclusive for everyone who uses our services.”

also includes an introduction to deaf awareness, helping staff better understand the needs of passengers and how best to support them throughout their journey.

Run by Deafero5, the voluntary programme has proved popular with colleagues, with more than 90 additional spaces available for staff to take part in the coming months.

Minister for Care responds to RNIB’s Out of Sight petition

Back in March, a group of campaigners handed in RNIB’s biggest ever petition to the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) as part of our Out of Sight campaign.

Signed by more than 48,000 people, the petition called on the UK Government to ensure people with sight loss in England receive the vision rehabilitation support they need, when they need it. Our research has shown that thousands of people with sight loss are missing out on vision rehabilitation services that help them live independently and stay connected.

We’ve now received a response from Stephen Kinnock MP, Minister of State for Care. The Minister responded to each of our recommendations in detail, and acknowledged the importance of independence,

dignity, and access to timely support for people experiencing sight loss. However, despite this engagement, he did not commit to taking any of our recommendations forward.

More positively, though, he offered RNIB a further discussion with DHSC officials which we’ll take up.

RNIB is also now hearing from MPs who received postcards from campaign supporters. As an added string to our campaign, it meant that many MPs received personalised postcards, with powerful messages about vision rehabilitation. An impressive 751 postcards were sent to 414 different MPs. You can let us know if your MP responded to you, by emailing us at campaigns@rnib.org.uk.

Among those MPs who heard directly from constituents is the new Health Secretary, James Murray MP. He received three Out of Sight postcards, and 72 of you signed our petition from his constituency, Ealing North. This ensured that we could bring home the full impact of vision rehabilitation to decision makers at the highest level of Government.

A recap on what we’re asking the UK Government to do: 1. Create national standards for what good vision rehabilitation looks like so local authorities know what service to provide.

2. Subject vision rehabilitation services to the same regulation and monitoring as other adult social care services.

3. Recognise Vision Rehabilitation Specialists for their skills and expertise by making this role a regulated profession.

We’re currently considering our next steps for Out of Sight, and would like to thank everyone who added their name to our petition and supported the campaign.

While significant challenges remain, there is growing momentum behind efforts to improve vision rehabilitation services. Over the coming months, we’ll continue discussions with government officials, work with partners across health and social care to build stronger evidence about what good rehabilitation looks like, and make the case for greater accountability from local authorities.

Liverpool is set to make history from 2-8 May 2027 as it hosts a new groundbreaking Inclusive Sport & Culture Festival (ISCF) — a first-of-its-kind event in the UK that will bring together elite athletes that compete in the Paralympics and a world class disabled-led arts and culture programme on a shared world stage.

The UK Sport-owned concept will showcase four international sport competitions across Boccia, Para Athletics, Wheelchair Rugby and Paracanoe, delivered in partnership with Boccia UK, UK Athletics, Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby and Paddle UK, alongside a groundbreaking arts and cultural programme, commissioned by Arts Council England, delivered by Culture Liverpool and led by deaf, disabled and neurodivergent artists.

The four sports at the heart of the festival will each bring their own extraordinary spectacle. Wheelchair Rugby — fast, physical and high-impact — will take centre stage at the M&S Bank Arena from Sunday 2 to Friday 7 May, with six international teams competing in what promises to be an electric atmosphere.

The highly tactical and precision-based World Boccia Cup, which counts towards Paralympic qualification, will be held at the Exhibition Centre Liverpool from Monday 3 to Friday 7 May. Paracanoe comes to Salthouse Dock on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 May, offering free-to-view racing that combines speed, control and technical skill against the backdrop of Liverpool's iconic waterfront.

And on Saturday 8 May, Para Athletics — the largest sport in the Paralympics — will take over Liverpool Waterfront, including Pier Head, for a free open-air celebration of sprinting, jumping and throwing at the 12

highest level of the sport.

At the heart of the festival will be a dynamic Athletes' and Artists' Village — a living, breathing space where competitors, creators and audiences come together. It will be more than a venue hub; it will be a shared community celebrating excellence, identity and connection throughout the week.

Taking place just ahead of the LA 2028 Paralympic Games, the Festival will also play a vital role in athlete preparation while elevating the visibility of disabled talent across sport and culture onto a global stage. It will shine a spotlight not only on elite and world class performance, but on the stories, creativity and cultural impact that surround it.

At its core, the festival is designed to bring sport and culture together as one experience — creating a powerful shared platform that celebrates excellence, creativity and representation for artists and athletes, while driving greater opportunity and long-term social impact.

Core funding includes a £2.3m contribution from the National Lottery and a £1m grant from Arts Council England.

Making sport more accessible: from broadcast to live experience For many blind and partially sighted people, following live sport can still mean relying on incomplete commentary, inaccessible broadcasts, or barriers to attending events in person. Whether watching from home or being part of the crowd in a stadium, access to sport is still not always inclusive.

As broadcasters and sports organisations invest more in live audio description and enhanced commentary, there is growing recognition that accessibility must be built into sport from the outset, not added later as an afterthought.

RNIB has been working across the sector to support this shift, collaborating with broadcasters, production teams and rights holders to improve how sport is experienced by blind and partially sighted audiences. Through user feedback, industry engagement and practical testing, RNIB has helped shape best practice principles for accessible sports broadcasting.

These include clear and descriptive commentary, stronger context-setting, and ensuring audiences can follow not only the action itself, but also the atmosphere, emotion and pace of live events. The goal is simple: blind and partially sighted viewers should be able to experience sport as fully as everyone else.

Longitudinal user research has been central to this work. For Channel 4 during the Winter Paralympics, RNIB worked with blind and partially sighted participants over multiple days to gather detailed feedback on the accessibility of highlights programming and enhanced voiceover. The study helped identify where audiences could follow events well, where key moments were being missed, and how enhanced voiceovers could better support both understanding and enjoyment.

Over the last couple of years, live audio description across sports broadcasting has continued to grow. ITV’s live audio description coverage of the Rugby Six Nations and Channel 4’s live audio description coverage of the African Cup of Nations have both helped demonstrate how accessible commentary can enhance the experience for blind and partially sighted audiences. User feedback has remained at the heart of developing these services, 14

helping broadcasters improve them year on year. This has widened access to sport and made commentary more inclusive through stronger and more detailed live description.

This evidence is helping inform wider broadcaster conversations and practical improvements across live sport coverage.

The impact of accessible sport was also clearly demonstrated during Wimbledon’s trial of Action Audio, which allowed blind and partially sighted fans to follow matches in real time through enhanced commentary and additional court-side detail.

Co-creation over the last couple of years has also been key to shaping how the Action Audio service operates, helping create the best possible experience for blind and partially sighted users. Ongoing collaboration and feedback from audiences have helped refine the commentary, pacing and level of detail to better meet the needs of listeners following live matches.

For one significantly blind tennis fan taking part in the trial, the difference was immediate. For the first time, they were able to properly follow player movement, understand how points were developing, and feel connected to the atmosphere inside the grounds.

They described the experience as transformative, explaining that the additional commentary helped bring the match to life and made them feel like they were sharing the same live moment as everyone else around them — rather than trying to piece it together afterwards.

That sense of shared participation is exactly why accessible sport matters. It is not simply about information; it is about inclusion.

There is growing momentum across the industry to make sport more inclusive, but consistency remains key. Broadcasters, venues, governing bodies and community organisations all have a role to play.

RNIB will continue working with partners across the sector to ensure accessible sport is not treated as a specialist add-on, but as a standard part of how sport is experienced by everyone.

Isaac Harvey MBE Change, Collaboration and What This Year Has Been Teaching Me This year has made me realise that change is not always about what happens around you. Sometimes it is about what shifts within you.

At first, the changes in my life this year looked quite separate. A new wheelchair after eight years. A different relationship with social media. A quieter and more uncertain period of work. A growing willingness to let other people support parts of what I do. But the more I have sat with it, the more I have realised these things are connected. They have all been pushing me towards the same kind of reflection.

Getting a new wheelchair has probably been the clearest example of that. It has brought more comfort, more confidence and a greater sense of independence into my life and I am genuinely grateful for that. At the same time, it has made me stop and realise how much I had adjusted to the old version of normal. Even positive change can take a while to catch up with emotionally, especially when it affects something so central to everyday life.

That same feeling has shown up in less visible ways too. Over time, there has been a shift in how I use social media. I used to post very regularly, almost as part of my routine. More recently, I have been trying to be more intentional with it. That has felt refreshing, but it has also made me realise again how much time and energy it takes to create and 20

share things well. Posting less is not always the easier option when you care about what you make.

Sometimes it simply means being more honest about what is worth saying and what needs more thought before it is put out into the world.

That shift towards being more intentional has reached further than social media. It has made me think more carefully about how I work in general, especially as a creative. For a long time, I have done a lot independently. Some of that came from needing to, and some of it came from genuinely liking things done in my own way. If something needed doing, I would usually learn how to do it, take it on myself and keep things moving. I do not regret that. It has taught me a lot, helped me build real skills and given me a strong connection to my work.

But there is another side to that too. As a creative, and somewhat of a perfectionist, I have often wanted to protect the work by keeping hold of it. From the outside, that can look like independence or just wanting to be proud of what you are able to achieve, and I would say for the most part it is. But sometimes it is also about control. When you care deeply about the end result, it can feel easier to carry everything yourself than to trust someone else with part of it.

for a while, but there is usually a cost. Other ideas get pushed back. Projects go quiet for longer than you meant them to. Energy disappears into keeping everything afloat instead of building what matters most.

That is one of the biggest things this year has been showing me. I still do a lot independently, and I am glad I do. I think that will always be part of me.

There is something important in knowing how things work, staying close to the detail and being active with your own ideas. But I am also learning that accepting support does not take away from that. In the right situations, it can strengthen it.

There have been a few people around me this year who have supported different parts of what I do. Some have helped shape content in ways that are stronger than what I would have done on my own. Some have helped carry projects that had gone quiet for a while. Some have brought creative energy and skills in areas where they are simply better than me. There have also been moments where support has meant knowing something would still move forward, even when I did not have the capacity to carry every part of it myself.

That has not always come naturally to me.

Handing over part of the process can still feel uncomfortable, especially when the work is personal and you have spent a long time building things on your own terms. But I think what has changed for me this year is that I no longer see that support as a threat to the way I work. I see it more as a way of protecting my energy, strengthening the work and making space for the parts that most need my attention.

What has surprised me most this year is not just the amount of change, but what it has asked me to rethink.

It has made me look more honestly at independence, creativity and capacity. I still value doing a lot myself, and I think I always will. That way of working has shaped me, taught me a lot and given me a strong connection to what I make. But I can also see more clearly now that holding everything on your own is not always the same as moving forward.

Sometimes progress looks like doing things differently. It looks like being more intentional with your energy, more honest about your limits and more open to the fact that other people can strengthen the work rather than take away from it.

Palace celebration for Derwen College Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s award students Derwen College students, past and present, celebrated a proud achievement this month when they were invited to Buckingham Palace after completing their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Awards. Twelve graduates and current students attended along with their families and College DofE awards leader Helen Edwards.

Derwen College, near Oswestry in Shropshire, is a residential and day college for young people aged 16–25 with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The college supports students to prepare for adult life by building independence, wellbeing and self-confidence, alongside vocational skills and enrichment opportunities such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

One of those celebrating at the Palace was 2025 graduate Brendan, one of the first students at the college to complete a sailing expedition as part of his DofE journey – an alternative to walking or canoeing for students whose disabilities can make those activities more difficult.

Brendan, who graduated last year, completed his Bronze, Silver and Gold awards at Derwen College. He said: “The Duke of Edinburgh is all about challenging yourself to do things you never thought you could do.”

The sailing expedition was the first time he had ever been on a boat. He said: “I learnt a lot about a sailing boat… where Bren and mum the sail is, the boom, the mast. And I had a blast!”

Brendan’s main vocational pathway at Derwen College was Hospitality and Food, where he developed practical skills and enjoyed serving customers during work placements at the College’s café and restaurant, as well as at external business including Premier Inn and McDonalds.

His mum Sarah said: “Learning to live away from home was a huge step for Brendan, but he embraced it from day one. The mix of independence and support was exactly what he needed, and it meant he could move into his adult community with confidence.”

After graduating, Brendan moved to the Camphill community in Milton Keynes, where he now lives with friends and volunteers in the on-site café.

Sarah said the Award scheme had been a huge motivator for her son. “DofE gave Brendan a real sense of achievement. The expeditions taught him how to persevere and keep going, and he is thrilled to have earned his Gold.”

She added: “Without Derwen College, I fear Brendan’s world would have stayed very small.

Before college he relied on me for everything, even to answer questions for him. At Derwen College he found his voice. He learned to make his own choices, discovered new experiences and gained real independence.”

I had to explain that at the House of Lords end of the building it takes a bit longer to feel the change. The big question for me is where does any potential change in Prime Minister leave disabled people and will the Labour party be able to do too much while they are working out what transition might look like.

We have not had any meaningful reform of the Welfare State in many years, although it is something that many people have an opinion on.

The last time I worked on a substantive bill was 2012 and, although there have been some minor changes, it is probably past the time it needs looking at in detail. Most people think change is needed but they can’t agree on what.

Welfare reform is not a vote winner and it is largely a difficult time for disabled people, not least in the media. There is a relatively constant stream of the media talking about the changes in Motability, how many people have Blue Badges and how many people are receiving state support.

The argument used back in 2012 was that 24

support was essential for those who were in most need. But this always left the difficult question of if you cut some people’s support does this push them closed to greater need. It is a dilemma that many people have an opinion on, but the reality is impossible for most people to answer.

It does feel, at the moment, like there is a disconnect between Westminster and the rest of the UK. Many people want change and the local elections proved that. There is a growing frustration with Westminster and anyone who works in the building needs to be really careful that they remember there is a world outside it.

The local elections will provide a lot of change and potential turmoil. People want something that is different even if they don’t quite know what it is they do want. The Kirklees councillor who admitted that she didn’t know how some things work experienced a strong backlash. I would rather someone admit that they didn’t understand that process (perhaps if you are going to stand for public office you should know about it) than just keep going without knowing the impact of any decision that they take. I take voting seriously. I try to vote as much as I can, but you should also understand what you are voting on.

As an athlete, if you were not sure of the direction of travel of any programme you were on, you were encouraged to ask questions. Sometimes when people get into positions of power, they think that

they need to know more than anyone else in the room. The best leaders that I have worked with, in both sport and politics, are the ones who don’t feel the need to do that. They are more than happy to ask questions.

What we have to be careful with, with the current discourse around disabled people (quite negative) and then the hassle that the people who work in public life receive, means that it is really hard for disabled people to stand for local election. This is not just about campaigning on the streets, although that can be hard when there is such a challenge with access, but more and more people are questioning whether it is the right thing for them.

Certainly as a woman in public life, you are more likely to experience misogyny (and worse) for daring to speak up. So, with the new numbers of councillors that are in the system, you have to be pretty resilient to want to do it.

But back to Westminster’s excitement. Andy Burnham in Manchester has worked hard to get the public transport to be more accessible. This might be a good thing for him to get his teeth stuck into.

The challenge for public transport is still there.

While parts of the country are better than they used to be, change is slow. We could do with a bit of pace so that it is not a hundred years before I can get on a train without the help or agreement from non-disabled people.

These beds can heal...Occupational Therapy students receive a grounding in gardening Students on a new course at the University of Winchester are learning about the healing qualities of gardening and getting their hands dirty in the process.

First Years on the Occupational Therapy (OT) Degree Apprenticeship have planned and planted two mini gardens in raised beds close to the University’s allotments.

Gardening can aid physical and mental recovery from illness or injury and so Lecturer Rhi Carter and programme leader Rachel Bloodworth-Strong decided their first cohort of students should receive a grounding in the art of growing.

Advised by the University’s Estates Grounds Manager, Maurice James, the two groups have set about transforming the bare beds into vibrant mini-gardens.

Rhi said: “Gardening offers so much more than beautiful green spaces. Research consistently shows that spending time in nature can improve mental wellbeing, reduce stress, increase physical activity, and foster a stronger sense of community. It encourages patience, responsibility, and mindfulness while creating opportunities for people to connect with one another and the environment around them.”

One group’s design is inspired by the Kawa River model will feature a ‘river’ of blue pebbles snaking through the middle. The other design has a purple theme and is designed to attract butterflies and other wildlife.

Rhi said: “Projects like this remind us that some of the Ability Needs Magazine

most valuable learning experiences happen outside the classroom. By working together to create something lasting, our students have not only enhanced the campus environment but have also contributed to a space that can be enjoyed by future students, staff, and visitors.”

As well as tending their plots it is hoped that the OT apprentices will meet up with other local groups who use gardening as therapy.

The Motability Scheme offers five main car types, covering everything from efficient saloons to practical estates. To find the perfect car for you, it helps to understand the main vehicle categories.

SUVs SUV stands for Sport Utility Vehicle. These cars combine the practicality of an estate with some of the features of an off-road vehicle. Most offer a roomy interior and a high driving position, while many also come with four-wheel drive for added grip on tougher terrain.

They are designed to sit higher off the ground than hatchbacks or estates, which not only improves visibility but can also make it easier to get in and out.

Some drivers like the feeling of security an SUV gives, although the extra weight and size can make them less fuel-efficient than smaller cars.

Estates Estate cars are a practical choice for families or anyone who needs extra space. They look like a stretched version of a hatchback or saloon, with a roof that extends further back and a large boot opening upwards. MPVs tend to look taller and boxier than hatchbacks or estates, and some come with sliding side doors to make access easier. They’re not as fashionable as they once were, largely because of the rise of SUVs, but MPVs often make better use of interior space and can be more fuel-efficient. Saloons Saloons are streamlined cars usually chosen for their comfort and refinement. They have a three-box design: the engine is at the front, the passenger space in the middle, and the boot at the back. Crucially, because the rear wheels are further away from backseat passengers than in a hatchback or estate, the ride is often smoother and quieter. Unlike a hatchback, the boot opens upwards on its own rather than with the rear window, and it is not accessible from the passenger seats.

Circable Expands Inclusive Circus Programme with Plans for Accessible Mobility Rig

An inclusive circus company specialising in workshops and experiences for children and adults with additional needs is seeking to expand its services just months after launching earlier this year.

Circable, founded in February by long-time friends Cindy Downey and Rosa Iddon Cooper, delivers mobile circus workshops, performances and wellbeing sessions designed to be accessible to people of all ages and abilities, including children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEN).

The company has already begun developing plans to widen access further through the purchase of a portable aerial rig suitable for people with limited mobility and wheelchair users. To support the project, Circable has launched a GoFundMe campaign with a target of £5,000.

The business was established following significant career changes for both founders, who have known each other for more than two decades and say their combined personal and professional experiences shaped the direction of the company.

Downey previously spent around 20 years working as a paramedic before stepping away from the profession following the death of her father. During that period, she pursued a long-standing interest in performance and trained at circus school to develop specialist skills.

At the same time, Iddon Cooper was working in a management role within the care sector but had become increasingly frustrated by administrative pressures despite enjoying the direct work she carried out with vulnerable people and families.

The pair later combined their experience in education, care and performance to create Circable, with a focus on movement, creativity and wellbeing.

The company now delivers workshops in schools, care settings, community venues and private events, with sessions adapted to suit different physical and cognitive needs.

Downey said accessibility remained central to the organisation’s development plans. “We want the freedom to fly to be available to everyone who attends our sessions,” she said. “The portable rig would allow people with mobility issues, including wheelchair users, to take part in activities that are often not accessible to them.

“We are currently trying to raise £5,000 to make that possible and expand what we can offer.”

The founders say there is increasing demand for inclusive activities that combine physical movement with confidence building and social interaction, particularly for children and young people who may struggle to access traditional sports or performing arts programmes.

Iddon Cooper said the company’s mobile approach was intended to remove barriers for participants and families. “Circable was created for everyone and mobility is a major part of that,” she said. “We want people to be able to access the experience without limitations, regardless of where they are or the support they require.

“Our ethos has always been built around wellbeing and movement, particularly for children and individuals who may not normally have access to these kinds of activities.”

Since launching earlier this year, Circable has begun building partnerships with schools, community groups and organisations supporting people with additional needs across the region.

The founders say future plans include expanding the number of workshops available, increasing outreach work and developing more specialist accessible equipment as demand grows.

The fundraising campaign is expected to remain active over the coming months while the business continues to broaden its programme of events and community sessions.

UK venue boosts inclusive karting for disabled drivers

Absolutely Karting in Maidenhead has become one of the UK’s most accessible karting venues, following a £17,000 grant from Wooden Spoon, a charity dedicated to transforming the lives of children and young people.

The funding has enabled Absolutely Together, the charity behind Absolutely Karting, to install a new disabled toilet and purchase a specialist hoist, supporting those with physical needs to safely access the track and adapted go karts.

The accessibility upgrades also mean the Maidenhead venue can expand its Together Karting programme. The initiative, delivered through Absolutely Together, already provided free karting sessions every Saturday morning for children and young adults with additional needs. It will now introduce weekly community sessions every Tuesday, alongside additional school group provision.

These enhancements are set to deliver more than 2,000 additional experiences each year for young people, increasing the programme’s impact in the local community.

Inclusive music hits a high note as OHMI Music-Makers extends to a further three areas Disabled children are being offered parity of access to music-making in Whole Class music lessons in a further three areas of England following The OHMI Trust’s successful application for Arts Council England funding.

The £48,137 grant will enable the charity to bring the OHMI Music-Makers Whole Class programme to schools via the Derby & Derbyshire Music Service, the Entrust Music Service in Staffordshire and Hounslow Music Service. The funding also secures the delivery of the programme for the same 2026-27 cycle with Bradford Music Service, Lincolnshire Music Service, Inspiring Music in Central Bedfordshire, Resonate in Liverpool, and Southampton and the Isle of Wight Music Service. It also allows OHMI to switch the production of one-handed flutes to the UK, including all that is necessary to move to a CNC manufacturing process.

While adapting a property or moving a family to a more suitable home may seem like the ideal solution, the reality is often far more complicated. Housing shortages, long waiting lists, structural limitations and funding constraints can mean families are left managing significant risks in homes that were never designed to meet their child’s needs.

Managing the Risk For many families, stairs become one of the biggest daily obstacles.

Children with complex physical needs may experience involuntary movements, spasms, seizures or poor postural control, making manual transfers both difficult and potentially dangerous. Caregivers are often required to carry increasingly heavy children while navigating staircases, placing both the child and themselves at risk of injury.

When assessing a home environment, occupational therapists typically consider several options. Moving a child’s bedroom downstairs can remove the need to use stairs, but often creates new challenges.

But we all have a role in making it work It is probably true to say that the NHS is perhaps the only public sector service that will impact every single person and that we all have a vested interest in having access to free healthcare. However, in recent years our population has grown, along with a rising life expectancy and an escalating expectation from our healthcare providers, to such an extent that the NHS has become a monolithic organisation with an annual budget of circa £205bn.

Health is always an emotive subject, not least because we all want to remain well and live out long lives, but there comes a point when we should, perhaps, stop and question if the current model is working and if we are getting real value for money from the investment.

Although the government has pledged to ring-fence the NHS budget, it still has to make significant efficiency savings.

We are beginning to get some idea of how this may be tackled. Although I welcome efficiency changes it will not be easy.

Historically changes have proven to be extremely difficult to achieve for a public sector 40

organisation as sizable and as multifaceted as the Department of Health.

Ministers need to be patient as well as tenacious if they want to see true reform take shape. It will take a lot longer than anyone realises, certainly longer than a single term in office to see realistic change occur and real resolve when making sweeping changes to a service involving thousands of public sector workers and a highly demanding general public. I suspect there will be a significant resistance to change, particularly from the Unions and strike action is already happening.

“changes” to working practices are made with the focus on service improvements, rather than what is easier or best for the providers, then we will be starting in the right direction.

There must also be caution against hasty procurement policies that target savings in one area, but may increase costs in another. For example, procuring cheaper home adaptations, which take longer to deliver and install than previously, may well offer savings to one budget holder at the expense of another. When we consider that a single days delay can cost anywhere between £100-£650 to a patient in care or hospital waiting for an adaptation, it is easy to see how an insular and uncoordinated procurement programme can have the opposite effect.

Healthcare procurement is complex and, true to say, in parts inefficient. However, in seeking savings procurement managers must temper enthusiasm for sweeping changes that may appear to offer large scale cost savings, but may well cause wide scale disruption which will impede delivery of services. Not forgetting too, the potential for commercial damage to many small and regional specialist suppliers, rendering any cost savings the NHS cancelled out by loss of revenue and rising unemployment.

The government is making much about patient choice being at the heart of its change agenda. While noble in cause, it is difficult to see how this can be achieved in practice. A patient choosing the hospital and surgeon of their choice sounds similar to a parent selecting the best school for their child’s education. A surgeon, like a teacher, can only treat so many people in any given period and the reality is we Ability Needs Magazine

can’t all be serviced by the leading professor.

What people want, and need, is access to good local services with the minimum of delays. I have much sympathy with those tasked with trying to provide demanding public services in the face of a huge public sector deficit. Everyone seemingly agrees that cuts and savings need to be made, so long as it’s those they don’t have a vested interest in.

For over 78 years, through the NHS, this country has enjoyed free healthcare and is something we have grown accustomed to.

However, we have also become complacent and, as is so often is the case with products and services provided free, they are often taken for granted and neither given the value nor respect they deserve.

While the general public, quite rightly, demands a first class NHS, they too can help make it a more efficient one.

For example, in 2025 across all NHS trusts, there were 11.8 million NDAs at a total cost to the health service of £1.9 billion In Greater Manchester alone, frivolous and hoax calls cost the emergency services £10 million.

Non-compliant patients, those who refuse to complete their treatment regimes, fail to take medicines or do not use specialist equipment provided to them also cost the NHS millions each year. It is estimated that unused or wasted medicines alone costs the taxpayer as much as £800 million a year.

So, when the government tell us we are all in this predicament together - we are. Only by working together can we all get out it.

Study highlights need for MS-specific calculators to predict heart attack and stroke risk Doctors use risk calculators to work out someone’s risk of experiencing serious problems related to your heart and blood vessels, like heart attacks and strokes.

This helps them take steps to support someone’s heart health if they’re at higher risk.

But a new study supported by the MS Society has found these calculators don’t accurately predict the risk in MS. Previous research has suggested that having MS is linked with a higher risk of problems like heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.

This increased risk doesn’t seem to be fully explained by traditional risk factors, like diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Even though these are also more common in people with MS. So there may be something else about MS that increases the risk. Possible reasons include, for example, ongoing inflammation.

Growing evidence also suggests experiencing heart and blood vessel problems might impact MS outcomes like relapse rates and disease progression.

Researchers from the UK, Canada and Italy analysed health records from over 390,000 people in England between 1987 to 2023.They tested five widely used risk calculators to see how accurately they predicted future heart problems in people with MS. These calculators are designed for the general population and focus on the traditional risk factors.

The results showed these tools often underestimate the risk in people with MS. And adapting existing tools was able to achieve only modest improvement.

The findings support the idea that something beyond traditional risk factors contributes to the increased risk of heart and blood vessel problems in MS. Also, current risk calculators tend to put a lot of emphasis on age. So younger adults can be classified

as low risk even if other risk factors are present. This may be particularly important in MS, as people are often diagnosed in their 30s and 40s.

What does this mean for people with MS? Without accurate enough tools, doctors may not be able to identify people with MS who are at higher risk of heart and blood vessel problems. So some people might not receive preventative care like statins or blood pressure monitoring.

What needs to happen now?

While an adapted calculator could be an interim measure for doctors, the researchers believe an MSspecific tool is needed. This would combine traditional risk factors with MS-specific measures, like disability.

They’re also urging an update to international guidelines, so MS is recognised as a condition that increases the risk of heart and blood vessel problems.

Currently, MS isn’t explicitly considered in national screening advice on diabetes and cholesterol.

Lead researcher Professor Jeremy Chataway says: “These findings could lead to important changes in how MS is managed. In the future, people with MS could receive earlier screening, more proactive treatment, and stronger support for healthy lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking. Ultimately, improving cardiovascular health in people with MS could not only reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke but also improve outcomes for the condition itself.”

We don’t know for sure yet whether improving heart health might also benefit people’s MS. Researchers are exploring this.

But we can all take steps to look after our hearts, by adopting healthy habits, like regular physical activity, eating a balanced diet, and not smoking.

Fishermen, chocolate and storks on the Belgian Coast What do you think of when you think of Belgium?

In all honesty, for me I didn’t know much about the country before I visited. My previous experiences amounted to a rapid comfort stop during a 24-hour coach journey to Switzerland with the Girl Guides and a couple of brief work trips to Brussels. Hardly enough to form a rounded impression! So, I went with a curious mind and was rewarded in spades.

What I found was a place where coast, city and nature met and intertwined with ease, where wide expanses and huge skies met eclectic architecture, fabulous art and interesting history.

My destination was Flanders – specifically part of the 67 miles of coastline that make up Belgium’s northern region.

Travelling can be tiring - so, the first thing that struck me was how easy it all was to get there and get around. Leaving London at 7am, I was firmly

ensconced in a lovely little restaurant overlooking the marina in Ostend by midday. A comfortable Eurostar journey brought me to Brussels, where transferring to the regional train was simple. Stations and trains offered step free access and lifts, making it unhurried, straightforward and a welcome breath of fresh air.

This sense of ease was in evidence throughout my trip – the entire coast is served by an accessible tram; streets are wide and smooth. Every single beach offers the visitor a range of beach wheelchairs for hire. There was accommodation for every budget, from an accessible hostel to a bolthole in the dunes, or luxury homes for family gatherings.

The two main cities I visited, Ostend and Antwerp, could not have been more different. Ostend feels more laidback – on arrival, the first thing visitors see is the picturesque marina, where boats bob, gently framed by the rows of bicycles lining the waterfront. A walk of metres took me to a delicious seafood restaurant, while a gentle wander round the town brought me to the wide promenade edging the seafront.

seaside tourism, Ostend still attracts people looking for coastal breaks with sweeping sands and expansive views. The light here is glorious, perhaps explaining the reason why so many artists, including its most famous son, James Ensor, have drawn inspiration from here. The evidence is in the numerous murals and art pieces scattered throughout. Water is central to Ostend’s identity, reflected not only in its maritime heritage but in its art, including the striking Mother sculpture of a pregnant woman reclining in water.

Antwerp by contrast is vibrant and energetic. I was fortunate to explore the city with a knowledgeable local guide whose enthusiasm for her city was infectious. I learned about the zoo right in the heart of the city. I saw the spectacular railway building, voted in 2014 as the most beautiful railway station in the world. Easy to see why, it is a glorious building over four floors and was once dubbed the ‘Railway Cathedral’. I wandered through the streets and saw a wonderful mix of architecture, enjoying the café culture before stopping at the Cathedral with its three

And then there was the chocolate.

At Chocolate Nation, Antwerp’s homage to its famous treat, I was introduced to its history and production before being forced to endure a tasting of nine different grades …it’s a tough life! (Incidentally, I particularly liked the newest creation, Ruby, a pink chocolate with fruity overtones?

Bridging the gap between city and coast was the smaller town of De Panne – here a ride on the tourist train showed me the neighbourhood of Dumont, filled with charming cottages creating a bucolic idyll in the midst of an urban environment. De Panne also had had the most fabulous Changing Places toilets just moments from the beach, with its two fully equipped rooms, open to everyone all day, every day.

For many British visitors, the name Flanders evokes Flanders Fields. While this wasn’t part of my trip, the nearby town of Nieuwpoort had a very significant part to play in WW1. It was here that the German army were brought to a grinding halt, when Belgian forces decided to flood the surrounding plains, managing the inundation through clever management of the locks and sluices. The recently opened Westland Nieuwpoort museum documents this key part of the story, bringing it to life with detailed photographs and exhibits as well as the panoramic views over the plains themselves.

Another museum well worth a visit was in Oostduinkerke. I wasn’t expecting to become so fascinated by fishing during my trip, but the brilliant Navigo museum, Museum of Fisheries, was compelling, offering both an intriguing glimpse into the fishing heritage of the region along with, downstairs, an aquarium showcasing much of the area’s sea-life. size boat bringing the local traditions to life.

One such tradition was the UNESCO recognised Horseback Shrimp Fisherman, a tradition found nowhere else in the world.

Another short walk brought me to a wide sweeping beach. There, thirteen men and women farm for shrimp using nets attached to horses, along the shallow flats of the Belgian coast. They are the last remaining people to do this and it was fascinating to watch them in action.

Nature lovers are also well served in Flanders.

The Zwin Nature Park is an important wetland nature reserve offering refuge to Belgium’s only collection of white storks. Visitors can observe these magnificent birds from specially designed viewing points throught the park.

While some of the vantage points

may pose challenging for those with mobility difficulties, there are plenty more that are easily accessed and reward the viewer with excellent opportunities for observing the wildlife.

Kabouterberg, offered a green trail winding through the woods with cute little gnomes adding an air of excitement as children rushed to spot them. There were accessible routes and a specially designed sandpit, perfect for wheelchair users. All terrain chairs were available to hire and it was a lovely place to while away an hour or two.

I particularly enjoyed Zilvermeer, with its unique ‘water train’ – platforms atop pontoons, tied together and pulled along by a motorised boat allowing visitors an unusual way to travel up and down the river.

From knowing little to experiencing lots, my trip to Flanders delivered on all fronts. The region offers so much, whether preferences lean towards city, culture, nature or simply enjoying a coastal break. There genuinely is something for everyone, whether young or old.

Perhaps most impressive of all was the commitment to accessibility – Flanders have spent more than twenty-five years improving access across the region and it shows. Whether it was the holiday home with the colour coded doors, each catering to visitors with different requirements or the genuine pride felt by the De Panne townspeople in their fabulous facilities, access felt integrated, never an add on.

My trip may have been brief but it left a lasting impression. It certainly whetted my appetite and earned a spot on my list of places I would like to revisit.

The extra-ordinary powers of support dog Odin give ex-lawyer a new lease of life Pet dog Odin helped Jolyon Ellwood-Russell and his wife Jen through a dark time after a severe anti-body reaction to cancer attacked Jolyon’s brain, leaving him unable to walk and having to give up his acclaimed legal career.

Now, having had the Australian Labradoodle trained as a disability assistance dog by the national Support Dogs charity, both Jolyon and Jen have been given extra peace of mind that help is always at paw for Jolyon.

Odin has been trained by the Yorkshire-based charity to open and close doors, pick up items that Jolyon drops, help him to undress, push access buttons to lifts and doors and to fetch help. The pair recently graduated as a successful Support Dogs partnership.

Jolyon, 53, of Farnham in Surrey, had been a distinguished finance lawyer for almost 30 years, and was working and living in Hong Kong when he was struck down with a type of throat cancer.

Although the cancer was successfully treated, Jolyon developed paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration, a rare condition that affects less than one per cent of cancer patients.

It happens when the immune system releases antibodies to destroy the tumour. But while trying to get rid of the cancer, the antibodies accidentally damage healthy cells, too.

Jolyon’s cerebellum, part of the brain which controls movement, balance, cognitive and speech skills, was attacked.

“I lost the ability to walk within a week,” said dad-ofthree Jolyon.

“It was very rapid and there was a slow decline for a period of time.”

Prior to his illness four years ago, Jolyon had a successful career as well as being a keen golfer and played squash and tennis.

Now he enjoys disabled sailing with Sailability, with Odin, who turns three in July, waiting on the jetty. The wonderdog was even there on stage when Jolyon collected an award in the sport last year.

The family got Odin as a puppy – and they soon knew he was capable of going on to achieve great feats.

“We’d had this breed before so we knew what they were like,” said Jen, a 46-year-old corporate lawyer who

gave up her career to care for her husband.

“We got Odin at the end of Jolyon’s cancer treatment and the kids had moved school. Having him was a distraction for the family.

“He’s a great family dog and was a very active puppy and the vet said ‘he needs a job’.

“As he is clever and intelligent, we had it in the back of our minds that he could be an assistance dog.

“Once he matured, we researched a number of charities and Support Dogs matched what we were looking for – we were looking at our pet dog, who is very much part of our family, being an assistance dog; a dual role.”

Jolyon said: “It’s fantastic to have graduated as a Support Dogs partnership. It gives us both reassurance that extra help is there.”

Jen added: “That Odin is able to help Jolyon is extra peace of mind.”

Support Dogs trains and provides specialist assistance dogs to help autistic children, as well as those living with epilepsy or a physical disability to live safer, more independent lives.

It receives no government funding and relies entirely on voluntary donations.

Extant returns to Edinburgh Fringe Festival, pioneering sector-wide change in visual impairment access Extant, the UK’s leading professional performing arts company of blind and visually impaired artists, will return to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this summer building on the success of its landmark 2025 programme. The company will present three ‘Enhance’ shows alongside a new showcase, in partnership with Underbelly as principal venue partner. Through this programme, Extant marks a significant step forward in embedding accessibility across the festival while raising the profile and visibility of visually impaired-led work.

In its second year, the programme signals a sustained shift across the sector. Extant is driving change by championing accessibility not as an add-on, but as an integral part of creative practice. This momentum is reflected in rapid year-on-year growth: from an estimated 30–50 visually impaired-accessible shows in 2024, representing less than 1% of the Fringe, Extant’s first year of activity increased that proportion to around 2% in 2025, and projections indicate that as much as 10–12% of the programme for 2026 will now be accessible to visually impaired audiences. Thanks to this scheme, Underbelly and ZOO have committed to ensuring every show in their programme is 100% visually impaired accessible by including at least one accessible performance. On top of this, ‘Big Four’ venues Pleasance and Assembly, alongside The Space, have also pledged to significantly increase their provisions.

Supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Enhance shows at Underbelly (17 August) will demonstrate Extant’s unique ‘Enhance post-production’ offer, featuring work from visually impaired artists and collaborators across theatre and comedy. Acts will include Jellyfish by Blah Blah Productions and Aarian Mehrabani’s debut stand-up show How’s Your Head.

Immersive and tailored Touch Tours provide the principal access tool, including presentation of succinct programme notes which get to the essence of the show, and description of any relevant visual elements.

New for 2026, Extant will host a one-off showcase at

Underbelly (18 August) to celebrate the breadth of visually impaired-led performance, supported by funding from the Postcode Society Trust, raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The programme will feature some of the UK’s most exciting visually impaired artists working across stand-up, cabaret, dance, theatre and new writing, including Growing Nostalgia by Ebony Rose Dark, VIP (Visually Impaired Papa) by Tom Skelton and work from Neil Skene, alongside All There Is To See by Shashank Sharma, Half Lights Project by Holly Thomas and An Evening with Tito Bone by Amelia Cavallo, serving as both a platform for artists and a focal point for wider engagement with accessibility at the Fringe.

Alongside its performances, the company is working with the Fringe Society to deliver targeted workshops on low-cost access interventions. It will also share new guidance through venues and networks to help hundreds of artists embed accessibility into their practice.

Extant will be working with partners Sight Scotland and Visually Impaired Creators Scotland to connect with local visually impaired communities and audiences.

Introducing the Naidex Roadshow South The Naidex Roadshow is a brand-new event from the team behind Naidex, the UK's leading event for disability, accessibility and independent living. Taking place on 9 September 2026 at Farnborough International, the Roadshow has been created to bring innovative products, expert advice and valuable community connections closer to audiences across the South of England.

Designed as a focused one-day event, the Naidex Roadshow South will bring together disabled people, carers, healthcare professionals, families, charities and suppliers. Visitors will have the opportunity to discover the latest mobility products, assistive technologies, daily living aids and accessibility solutions from more than 70 exhibitors, all while connecting directly with the organisations behind them.

Alongside the exhibition, attendees can enjoy a packed programme of content across three dedicated theatres. The Main Stage will feature inspiring speakers, advocates and changemakers sharing powerful stories and insights. The Village Green, the heart of the event, will host community-focused sessions, interactive

activities and wellbeing content, while the Naidex Professional Theatre will provide expert-led discussions and CPD-accredited learning opportunities for healthcare and industry professionals.

Visitors can also experience the interactive Test Track, where they can try the latest mobility equipment in a safe and practical environment.

Building on more than 50 years of Naidex success, the Roadshow creates a new opportunity for the disability community to learn, connect and discover solutions that support greater independence and inclusion. Disability Awareness Day (DAD) 2026 – Sunday 12th July Warrington Disability Partnership, the organisers of the UK’s and possibly, the worlds, largest free to enter voluntary led pan disability exhibition are finalising the plans for this year’s 35th annual show.

Held within the grounds of Walton Hall and Gardens, Warrington (off A56). DAD 2026 will be the finale of a week of ten complementary events that include: • • • • •

Carers Wellbeing Festival Evenings of entertainment Mental Health and Wellbeing Children’s Party in the Park SEND Employment Workshop

Local disability education specialists Expanse Learning Group and the north west’s water supplier United Utilities, are leading the list of sponsors.

DAD 2026 exhibitors will highlight solutions supporting independent living and mobility, with equipment, products, transport, employment, education, training, health and social care, leisure activities, alongside over 100 charities/support groups.

On the day, visitors can gain an insight into the help and support that is available locally, regionally and nationally from statutory organisations, businesses and voluntary sector groups.

A huge, tented village of marquees will house most

of the exhibitors that will be supported by: a Sports Zone, a Main Arena, a huge Performing Arts Marquee, two further marquees featuring art and crafts.

The Sports Zone offers “have a go” sports activities including Tennis, American Football, Snooker, Rugby League, Tai Chi, Football and Scuba Diving in the onsite pool.

Alternatively, sit alongside the Main Arena watching Reach Sled Dogs Display Team, Batida Rio Samba Band, Royal Marines Corps of Drums, sports demonstrations and Odinn Born, Vikings enactment.

All this and a Silent Disco, Circus Skills, Classic Car Show and play areas, plus Walton Gardens accessible onsite zoo, crazy golf, high ropes and pitch and putt.

Support services at DAD 2026 will include a free accessible Park and Ride service, free accessible buses from Warrington Town Centre, a free mobility scooter and wheelchair loan service (subject to availability), British Sign Language interpreters, additional unisex wheelchair accessible toilets and over 60 trained stewards and helper’s eager to make it a day to remember for everyone.

Sight Village

is the UK’s leading exhibition and an integral part of the

blind and low-vision landscape, attracting thousands of visitors each year. The exhibition provides a unique and welcoming space where people with visual impairments or low vision can explore the latest technology, products, and support services, engaging with new innovations in a sensory-rich environment designed to meet the needs of the low-vision community.

Sight Village delivers a national programme of events designed to ensure access to essential information and support across the UK. In 2026, Sight Village will host six events, beginning in Glasgow in March, followed

by Exeter in April at a new venue, Leeds in June, Birmingham in July, North Wales in September — a new local event supported by North Wales Blind Society — and returning to London in October/November (dates to be confirmed). Visitors are encouraged to check the Sight Village website regularly for the latest updates, including confirmed dates, timings, venues, and travel information.

At Sight Village, attendees can engage with a wide array of exhibitors, including charities, commercial companies, and voluntary organisations from the UK, Europe, and beyond. This diversity allows visitors to learn about the latest advancements in assistive technology, gain insights into vital support services, and connect with experts dedicated to improving the lives of people with visual impairments or low vision.

Sight Village’s latest exhibition was held in London in November 2025 and attracted the interest of the Rt Hon Sir Stephen Timms MP, Minister for Social Security and Disability, who was welcomed to the event by Bev Jessop, Principal and Chief Executive of Queen Alexandra College (QAC). Reflecting on his visit, Minister Timms said: “My visit to Sight Village has shown me again that it is Assistive and Accessible Technology that is key to enabling independence, greater inclusion and participation for disabled people. We are committed to increasing awareness of existing assistive technologies and exploring ways to build capacity and digital skills, to create opportunities for disabled people in all areas of life.”
