Living the Greatest Commandments MATTHEW 22:33-40 When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching. Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

WELCOME We hope you enjoy being our guest this year at Summit, where you will benefit significantly from the important conversations about loving God and loving all of our neighbors. We believe you will be blessed by the theme speakers, classroom and featured presenters, and the many events scheduled. For the first time, we are offering two special all-day tracks. Those interested in Faith Formation are invited to an all-day Monday track where spiritual formation leaders willexplore vital principles and practices of building communities of faith. On Tuesday, a Medical Missions 2

track will accentuate the great needs and opportunities for congregations to partner in medical missions around the world. We also believe our shortened format – concluding a half-day earlier at noon on Wednesday – will make travel far more convenient for our many guests who come from out of town each September. Welcome to Abilene and to the Hill, where dramatic changes to our campus infrastructure – all part of our Vision in Action initiative to build three new science facilities and two stadiums – are ongoing. Its an exciting time to be at ACU and an honor to host you for the 110th annual Summit!

“H

ear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one.” This truth is foundational to our faith.

When asked, “What is the most important commandment?,” Jesus repeated the Old Testament theme, saying that we should love God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength, and that we should love our neighbors as ourselves. There is no commandment greater than these. Jesus makes a claim on the entire person to love God with all our being and to show our love to the world by how we behave toward our neighbors. We bless our neighbors who are oppressed and marginalized, and we serve our neighbors living near or far away on other continents. We love those who are like us as well as those we do not understand or even yet know. God’s great love is for the whole world. 3

Theme Speakers SUNDAY EVENING: Jerry Taylor Love the Lord Your God (Deuteronomy 6:4-9) Cullen Auditorium

No greater spiritual truth has ever shaped the world more than, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord.” This one true God is pre-eminently a being of immense love who calls us to respond to His divine nature.

MONDAY MORNING: Sara Barton The Greatest Commandment (Matthew 22:34-40)

MONDAY EVENING: Josh Graves Love Your Neighbor (Luke 10:25-37)

Moody Coliseum

Cullen Auditorium

Who is the “other”? The face of the stranger, the alien, often sparks fear and hinders us seeing the image of God within. Until we see the image of God stamped on the “other’s” heart, our fear will continue to divide communities.

To ask, “What is the greatest command?” is to seek to know what is the ultimate meaning of life. Westerners often separate their lives through dichotomies: thinking versus feeling; doing versus believing. The call to love God with our entire being is the heart of religion.

TUESDAY MORNING: Ali Kaiser and Derran Reese Love Your Neighbor on the Street (I Corinthians 8:1-15)

TUESDAY EVENING: Monte Cox Love All Your Neighbors (Colossians 3:11-17)

Moody Coliseum

Cullen Auditorium

God’s love is not a generic platitude but a concrete expression in the lives of those who need it most. The sanctity of all life matters, yet God’s great love for the oppressed, weak and marginalized has always mattered more.

God’s love calls us to reach out not only to those in the next valley but also those across the sea. As technology, travel and media continue to abound, the globe continues to shrink. Our dearest neighbors might be out of sight, yet closer than ever before. The primary focus is to connect our love for our neighbors to the proclamation of the Gospel.

WEDNESDAY MORNING: Jonathan Storment and David McQueen Love One Another (Ephesians 4:1-6) Moody Coliseum

One common human tendency is seen in the attempt to impose sameness on others. The human preference for uniformity hinders God’s unity as expressed in the diversity of the body of Christ. While fear produces uniformity, humility produces unity. The “one God and Father of all” calls us to “the unity of the Spirit.”

CONVERSATION CORNER: THE SILENCE OF GOD AND HUMAN SUFFERING 8:30 p.m., Brown Library, AT&T Learning Studio (second floor) . . 162008-01 Darryl Tippens (Abilene, Texas) and Landon Saunders (Norwich, Vt.) This Conversation Corner seeks spiritual insights to ways Christians can openly journey during suffering and doubt.

McFARLAND USA 8:30 p.m., Cullen Auditorium Watch with us this 2015 Disney movie described by The Christian Chronicle as “the true story of California cross-country coach Jim White, who transformed a migrant farm town’s predominantly Latino high school into an unlikely powerhouse.” White – played by Kevin Costner – and his wife are lifelong Church of Christ members whose faith has for years been an integral aspect of their vocational missions work in the community.

8-8:15 A.M. MORNING PRAYERS AT JACOB’S DREAM 8-8:15 a.m., Jacob’s Dream Sculpture Site (east campus) Prayer hosts: Ron and Janine Morgan (Abilene, Texas) We invite you to gather at Jacob’s Dream each morning, Monday through Wednesday, to begin the day in prayer. The short devotional time will center on loving God and loving our neighbors who live across the street and around the world.

9-9:45 A.M. CLASSES: SESSION 1 SHOW LOVE FOR THE DEAF THROUGH MISSIONS Wednesday 9-9:45 a.m., BSB 104 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .162101-01 Jerry Drennan (Abilene, Texas) A veteran vocational missionary and ACU professor emeritus recounts 40 years of mission work among the deaf in East Africa, especially Kenya. Part 1 of 2.

LOVE GOD AND LOVE YOUR ASIAN NEIGHBORS A Search for Good Reasons 9-9:45 a.m., BSB 112 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162101-02 Kilnam Cha (Abilene, Texas) What does “neighbor” mean in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Nepali or Thai? Why should I bother to love neighbors on the other side of the world?

LATINO DISCIPLE SHIFT Effective Discipleship Among Latinos 9-9:45 a.m., BSB 113 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162101-03 Sixto Rivera (Garland, Texas) Many churches have tried and failed to reach Latinos, but their desire hasn’t faded. A shift to effective disciple-making is needed to reach Latinos. There is great opportunity to capitalize upon Latinos’ quest for relationship with God and fellow people.

WOMEN IN WORSHIP Thinking Pastorally 9-9:45 a.m., BSB 114 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162101-04 Ken Cukrowski (Abilene, Texas) Part 3 of 3.

EXTRAORDINARY LOVE IN ORDINARY PEOPLE

Speaker: Larry James Honorees: Larry and Pam Sullivan, and Eleanor Hamby 5 p.m., MCC, Zone A and B Tickets: $5 (purchase at Summit Headquarters) Contact: Tina Chisholm, 325-674-3700 or tina.chisholm@acu.edu

8:30 p.m., Cullen Auditorium Watch with us this 2015 Disney movie described by The Christian Chronicle as “the true story of California cross-country coach Jim White, who transformed a migrant farm town’s predominantly Latino high school into an unlikely powerhouse.” White – played by Kevin Costner – and his wife are lifelong Church of Christ members whose faith has for years been an integral aspect of their vocational missions work in the community.

Palms Up 9-9:45 a.m., BSB 115 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162101-05 Karl Ihfe (Lubbock, Texas) Part 2 of 2.

THE SILENCE OF GOD AND HUMAN SUFFERING The New Martin Scorsese Film: Silence 9-9:45 a.m., BSB 117 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162101-06 Tod Brown (Midland, Texas); Darryl Tippens (Abilene, Texas) Darryl, who teaches the novel upon which the movie is based, and Tod, who is involved with the production of the film, will discuss the forthcoming Martin Scorsese film Silence, starring Liam Neeson. The classic novel and the major motion picture tell the excruciating story of Christian persecution in 17th-century Japan. Both the major motion picture and the book upon which it is based raise profound questions about the problem of suffering in the face of God’s seeming absence.

MY ARTISTIC WORSHIP TO GOD

BECOMING LOVE ALONGSIDE THE NEXT GENERATION

Art: Rising Above the Norm 9-9:45 a.m., BSB 120 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162101-07 Rolando Diaz (Dallas, Texas) Part 3 of 3.

Centering on Identity in Our Families 10-10:45 a.m., BSB 112 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162102-03 Joshua Kellar (Belton, Texas) Part 2 of 2.

ENGAGING RELIGIOUS CULTURE

THE HISTORY OF CHURCH OF CHRIST MUSIC: NEW SONGS, OLD PROBLEMS

Jesus and His Rabbinic Peers 9-9:45 a.m., BSB 121 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162101-08 James Prather (Abilene, Texas) Learn how Jesus pushed faithful religious people of his day to radically extend the concept of “Who is my neighbor?” and how you can engage your local church to do the same.

SIDEKICKS CAN BE SUPERHEROES

WHAT DR. SEUSS TAUGHT ME ABOUT ELDERS AND MINISTERS

A Missionary’s Answer to Bringing Change in the Church 9-9:45 a.m., BSB 128 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162101-09 J. Omar Palafox (Lubbock, Texas) Understanding how to minister from a position of disadvantage has answered many questions. As the Hispanic church changes, all churches ought to consider answers to moving forward in mission. To love God and neighbor, ministers must be imaginative.

Music of Our Era – Music in Churches of Christ, 1950 to Now 10-10:45 a.m., BSB 115 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162102-05 Greg Taylor (Tulsa, Okla.) The good news is that congregational leaders can experience harmonious, peaceful, and fruitful relationship with one another. Rather than being North-Going and South-Going Zax as described by Dr. Seuss, this session provides how church leaders can go in the same direction.

I SHALL NOT BE MOVED: WORSHIP AND SPIRITUAL MATURITY

REDEEMING CHARITY

How Worship Helps Us Be Formed, Transformed and Spiritually Mature 9-9:45 a.m., BSB 129 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162101-10 DJ Bulls (Coppell, Texas) Worship has always been a polarizing topic, but it doesn’t have to be when we remember its purpose and what and who it is about. Explore with other Christians how worship spiritually forms and transforms while also helping us “grow up.”

SHARING THE JOURNEY: SPIRITUAL PRACTICES FOR DISCIPLESHIP IN COMMUNITY Practicing Outside Ourselves – Putting the Body in Motion Beyond the Walls of the Church 9-9:45 a.m., BSB 200 (Chapel on the Hill) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162101-11 Jeff Childers (Abilene, Texas) Part 3 of 3.

10-10:45 A.M. CLASSES: SESSION 2 BAPTISM AS SACRAMENT AND/OR COMMAND 10-10:45 a.m., BSB 100 (Hart Auditorium) . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162102-01 John Weaver (Abilene, Texas) This session will explore the sacramental nature of baptism as a divine or apostolic commandment in the Bible. This exploration will seek to show how sacramental understandings of baptism might be approached through the language and theology of commandment, which is a word, concept and related set of practices in New Testament passages that describe baptism (and, similarly, love of God and neighbor).

SHOW LOVE FOR THE DEAF THROUGH MISSIONS 10-10:45 a.m., BSB 104 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162102-02 Jerry Drennan (Abilene, Texas) Part 2 of 2. 16

Music of Our Era – Music in Churches of Christ, 1950 to Now 10-10:45 a.m., BSB 114 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162102-04 Jack Boyd (Abilene, Texas) Part 3 of 3.

Loving Every Neighbor as Yourself 10-10:45 a.m., BSB 117 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162102-06 Mark and Jocelyn Wiebe (Lubbock, Texas) The contemporary view of charity has been warped to perpetuate division between those who have and those who don’t. Explore a fuller meaning of Christian charity and what loving your neighbor can look like in an urban ministry context.

INTIMACY INSIDE AND OUT Growing to Know God, Self and Others 10-10:45 a.m., BSB 120 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162102-07 Heidi Morris (Abilene, Texas) People today share all types of information about themselves, especially online. Yet, we never truly know one another. Our lack of vulnerability and intimacy hinders the formation of deep connections we need to best understand ourselves and our God.

GOD ENTHRONED FOREVER The Timeless Psalter/Commentary Project 10-10:45 a.m., BSB 121 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162102-08 R. Mark Shipp (Austin, Texas), Randy Daw (Greenville, Texas), DJ Bulls (Coppell, Texas), James Tackett (Austin, Texas) Timeless is the first new translation and commentary on the entire book of Psalms, with a “Psalter” featuring multiple new musical settings for each psalm. Learn about this important project while experiencing special music, congregational singing and readings.

THE CHURCH THAT JESUS BUILT A Practical Guide to Planting Churches With Jesus 10-10:45 a.m., BSB 128 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162102-09 Jordan and Sara Bunch (Pflugerville, Texas) Church planters and missionaries alike are notoriously hard on themselves. We have heard it said, “Pray like it all depends on God, and live as if it all depends on you.” When we live our lives reflecting the missional reality of the Kingdom, we look for where God is at work, and then simply join Him.

THE NEXT GENERATION MUST BE BETTER Offering Hope for the Race Problem in America 10-10:45 a.m., BSB 129 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162102-10 Travis Hurley (Joplin, Mo.) Issues of race persist in our society and our churches. Be challenged by the biblical mandate for the implementation of ministries pursuing reconciliation across ethnic, cultural and socio-economic lines.

Free for Summit guests from 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily. See map (page 24) for pick-up and drop-off locations. Call 325-674-3744 to arrange transportation.

BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS Equipping the Church to Love Our Muslim Brothers and Sisters 10-10:45 a.m., BSB 130 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162102-11 Derran Reese (Abilene, Texas) We are called to be peacemakers, loving our neighbors and our enemies. Yet, the world tells us to fear and vilify others, especially the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims. Hear how one church equips itself to be an agent of peace and reconciliation.

GOSPEL INTERRUPTIONS: WORDS OF JESUS THAT CHANGE OUR LIVES What Do You Want Me to Do for You? 10-10:45 a.m., BSB 200 (Chapel on the Hill) . . . . . . . . . . . 162102-12 Andre Resner (Salisbury, N.C.) Part 3 of 3.

11-11:45 A.M. THEME CONVERSATION LOVE ONE ANOTHER (EPHESIANS 4:1-6) 11-11:45 a.m., Moody Coliseum . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162103-01 Theme Speakers: Jonathan Storment (Abilene, Texas) and David McQueen (Abilene, Texas) Worship Leader: ACU student praise team The human preference for uniformity hinders God’s unity as expressed in the diversity of the body of Christ. Fear seeks uniformity but humility produces the unity of spirit God intends for all to share.
