THE LAST GAME Wildcats show fight in second half at North Texas, outscoring the Mean Green, 21-13.
A
bilene Christian’s senior running back duo of Tracy James and Billy McCrary combined for 246 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns in the Wildcats’ 51-31 loss at North Texas Aug. 31 at Apogee Stadium. Despite the lopsided margin of defeat, ACU head coach Adam Dorrel felt proud of his entire program. “That’s a real good football team (North Texas),” he said, “and we’re going to build off what we did tonight in the second half (outscoring the Mean Green 21-13). We played some real good football, and did what we set out to do. We had the one turnover, but no real stupid penalties. “Tonight was exciting. We competed at a high level, didn’t quit and kept battling back. Sure, we got punched in the mouth early on but we kept fighting and making adjustments. McCrary netted 79 yards on eight carries, including a 69-yard touchdown sprint late in the third quarter, while James, a Dallas native, ran for 109 yards on 16 carries (6.6 yards per game) and broke the Mean Green’s shutout bid with a 19-yard touchdown run that came with 1:15 before halftime. Unfortunately, North Texas’ big play capabilities extended into the ensuing kickoff as Deion HairGriffin returned the ball 96 yards to the end zone, pushing the Mean Green’s lead to 38-7. Hair-Griffin nearly started the game in similar fashion but was tripped up by Byron Robinson Jr. at the Wildcats’ 32-yard line. However, on the Mean Green’s first play from scrimmage Heisman Trophy watch list quarterback Mason Fine connected with Jason Pirtle deep in the end zone. Pirtle caught three touchdown passes tonight on four receptions and 88 yards, while pro prospect Rico Bussey hauled in four catches for 156 yards and a touchdown as Fine finished 28-37 with four TDs and one interception (Adonis Davis). Fine was intercepted only five times all of last season. North Texas went into the break up 38-10 and added a field goal on their first drive of the third quarter. The two sides then exchanged punts, and on ACU’s next drive that started at its own 14-yard line McCrary broke free for the aforementioned 69-yard run off a 3-and-4 situation. 2

McCrary also had a memorable season opener in 2018 vs. Baylor, which included a 75-yard dash. On ACU’s next scoring drive that spanned the third and fourth quarters, James started with a 34-yard reception and capped it with a five-yard touchdown dash. James’ most recent two-touchdown game prior to tonight was Oct. 20, 2018 at Southeastern La. James caught three passes from quarterback Luke Anthony for 47 yards, but it was sophomore Kobe Clark who led the Wildcats with a single-game career high
nine receptions for 60 yards. Anthony finished the game 24-of-34 for 273 yards and hit senior Josh Fink for a 64-yard touchdown pass for the game’s final points of the night. Qua’Shawn Washington led ACU’s defense with 11 tackles, five of them solo. Brandon Richmond and Jeremiah Chambers added 10 tackles each. UNT outgained ACU in total yards (575-456), passing (383-273), rushing (192-183) and first downs (26-20).

SATURDAY’S GAME Arizona Christian Firestorm blazes into Wildcat Stadium for The Battle of ACUs
T
here’s nothing but respect for ArizonaC hristian within the confines of Wildcat Stadium. Although the coaching staff and student-athletes don’t know the Firestorm in great detail as they would a Southland Conference rival, they recognize Arizona Christian’s status as underdogs and will expect a harsh battle throughout all four quarters. Third-year head coach Adam Dorrel took time during last Saturday’s postgame huddle to mention the challenge Arizona Christian presents, and a day earlier he reminded the Wildcats of how bad it felt to be down at halftime in their 2018 home opener vs. DII Angelo State. “Their classification as a NAIA school shouldn’t matter,” he said. “That’s a good football program with a solid record and some outstanding players. We’re not in a position to overlook anyone, and I think we remember how we all felt last year vs. Angelo State.” Arizona Christian added its football program the same year (2014) Abilene Christian became full-fledged members of the Southland Conference, and has only known one losing season. The Firestorm won back-to-back conference titles in the Central States Football League Championships from 2015-16, and posted an 8-3 mark during their first year in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Wildcats appear to be the Firestorm’s most high-profile opponent to date. In years past they’ve played DII Western New Mexico, Davenport, Simon Fraser and Texas - Permian Basin in addition to DIII Whittier College, George Fox, and Sul Ross. They beat the Lobos 42-20 in the 2018 season opener. Arizona Christian Notes
• The Firestorm started their season Aug. 31 with a 20-14 loss to Montana State - Northern, and were receiving votes in the first NAIA poll.
• The school added football in 2014, becoming one of four four-year universities in Arizona offering the sport.
• ACU won the 2015 (6-3) and 2016 (7-3) Central States Football League Championships and finished with a No. 22 national ranking, but now 4

compete as an associate member of Sooner Athletic Conference (since 2018). The SAC is composed of several Texas-based schools including, Wayland Baptist, Texas College, and Texas Wesleyan.
• ACU posted an 8-3 record in 2018 and were 7-3 in their final year in the CSFL (2017).
• The Firestorm signed more than 90 players during the 2019 offseason. Their DI transfers

A
llen Ward, who led the athletics program at Murray State University the past 13 years, was announced on July 16, 2018, as the ninth director of athletics at Abilene Christian University. During his tenure at Murray State, the Racers captured 39 Ohio Valley Conference championships and participated in NCAA Tournament play 29 times. Under Ward’s leadership, MSU has been one of the top overall athletics programs in its league, finishing in the top three in the OVC Commissioner’s Cup race six times since its inception in 2009, including second place each of the last two years. The Racers play NCAA Division I FCS football in the Ohio Valley Conference and its men’s basketball program is annually one of the top mid-major programs in the nation. Murray State – a university of almost 10,500 students – has won 25 OVC conference championships in men’s basketball and reached the NCAA Tournament 16 times, including last spring when the Racers lost to West Virginia in the first round. During Ward’s tenure at MSU, the Racers won six regular-season men’s basketball championships, four conference tournament titles, reached the NCAA Tournament four times (2006, 2010, 2012 and 2018), the NIT (2011 and 2015) and the collegeinsider.com Tournament (CIT) in 2014. When Ward joined MSU Athletics, its overall Academic Progress Rate (APR) score was 911. Last year it grew to 986. Student-athlete graduation rates
now consistently outpace the general student body with the 2018-19 difference expected to be 14 percent. He was at the helm as MSU’s athletics facilities were transformed by more than $13.5 million in enhancements, touching virtually every sport. In addition, the Racer Club was established as MSU’s annual fundraising arm, varsity softball was added as a sport, additional staff were added in key areas vital to student-athlete well-being and achievement, a comprehensive Title IX plan was developed to ensure compliance, and numerous events were digitally broadcast live and in HD each season. Ward has spent 27 years in collegiate athletics. He takes over an ACU athletics program that in 2018-19 will be in its sixth year as a Division I affiliate and second-year eligible for all Southland Conference and NCAA postseason tournaments. The 2018 season will mark ACU’s second to play at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium, its first on-campus home for football since World War II. Ward, 51, joined the Murray State program in March 2005 after serving the previous 14 years in several roles at the University of North Texas, including the final seven years as senior associate athletics director. A native of Rolla, Missouri, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from William Jewel College and went on to earn his M.Ed. in physical education and sports administration from Wichita State University in 1991. He and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan and Nicole.

A
T dam Dorrel was hired Dec. 19, 2016, as the 20th head football coach in Abilene Christian University program history, but the first to lead a team with an opportunity to reach the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs. On Sept. 16, 2017, he became the first ACU head coach since World War II to lead its football team in a permanent on-campus stadium when the Wildcats beat Houston Baptist in the inaugural game at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium. And on Nov. 10, 2018, he became the first ACU head coach in program history to lead a Wildcat football team to a winning season at the NCAA Division I level when ACU beat Sam Houston State, 17-10, in Huntsville to push ACU to 6-4 on its way to a 6-5 final record. The Wildcats finished the 2018 season with the first winning season at the NCAA Division I level in program history, the most wins in the Southland
Conference at the Division I level (5-4 record), the first win over a top-15 team at the Division I level (28-12 over then-No. 11 Nicholls on Oct. 13), the program’s first win over Sam Houston State since 1983, and a 48-27 demolition of Southeastern Louisiana.In eight-plus seasons as a head coach, Dorrel has compiled a 84-23 record, an 78.5 winning percentage that ranks in the top 10 among active college coaches. Dorrel led the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats to the Division II playoffs in all six of his seasons as the head coach and led them to 30 straight victories to end his tenure at his alma mater. He graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education, and earned his Masters of Science degree (health and physical education) in 2000. Dorrel and his wife, Erin, have twin daughters, Allie and Sam.
