Thanksgiving Baskets By: Gary Rupp
Without a doubt, this is my favorite time of year. I love the changing of the seasons, the bright colored leaves, the crisp fall nights, and the first hints of the winter snows to come. But it’s also easy to get so lost in my work and other responsibilities, that the time flies by and the holiday season goes with it before I’ve scarcely noticed it has started. I have to constantly remind myself that there are other far more important priorities in my life. I need to step back and think about what this season really means. It’s not about my needs or wants, but the needs and wants of others. I don’t think any of us intend to let this happen, but the momentum of life takes over. For me, the Thanksgiving basket ministry at Abiding Hope offers a unique opportunity to stop and take the time to reflect on the needs of others in the midst of the busyness.

I have participated in the Thanksgiving basket ministry for many years now, providing a financial offering for the baskets, as well as participating in the events to assemble 1200 baskets for people in our community and load them onto trucks for delivery. This occurs the Thursday and Friday before Thanksgiving each year.
I have loaded the trucks in both rain and snow, and I have loved every minute of it. I always feel like I get more out of it than I give. Every year, I see new faces participating in these activities, and it’s a great joy to see this important ministry expanding. But it’s also wonderful to work alongside servants from other churches, schools, and community organizations and enjoy the camaraderie we’ve shared through the years of participating in this annual event.

I truly believe that the act of radical generosity offers as much to the giver as the receiver. When we give our time and our talents (as well as our resources) in support of others, the Holy Spirit touches us, reaffirming that we are all one with God and equal in God’s eyes - no matter our circumstances. We are reminded that our offerings matter. It’s a humbling experience, but also one that brings great joy to our hearts.
