Dear Brothers and Sisters, Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I haven’t yet been able to get my brain around the fact that we are in the year 2020. But here we are. I do like the metaphor of “2020” as it relates to vision and being able to experience God and to see clearly just where God is leading us. As you read through this edition of Unleashed Magazine, pay particular attention to the article on Generous Life 2020, which is the ongoing vision for where we believe God is calling Abiding Hope over the next couple of years. The Generous Life Vision was launched in 2015 to include four key components: • • • •

Expand the missional effectiveness and reach of Abiding Hope Accompany struggling congregations toward redevelopment Build relationships with the Latino community of greater Denver Generate a national leadership network for congregational vitality

I invite you also to take notice of the articles highlighting the various ways that we are innovating ministries to align with our culture of authentic worship, intentional relationships, sacrificial service, and radical generosity. There are far too many things happening for me to mention here, and so I hope that you’ll take the time to read carefully through this edition of Unleashed Magazine. We pray that this magazine will serve as inspiration for you and your family as you go deeper in your journey as a child of God. Please don’t just keep Unleashed Magazine to yourself. Send the link to friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members to introduce and invite them to participate in the Abiding Hope culture. May God bless you with “2020 vision” to experience God deeply and richly as you live out your call to be the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus in the world. With abiding hope,

Pastor Doug Hill Lead Pastor

Men’s Retreat Reflection By: Elliott Bostrom

O

I was on “walkabout,” wandering a nearby trail trying to get in touch with my inner child (which is tough to do when you feel like you were born a grown-up). As I was walking, I came upon an old tree alongside the path. I stopped. There was something about that tree that made me pause. I stood there for a moment and suddenly felt the urge to lean against it, as if the tree was calling me to do so. As soon as my shoulder rested on the tree I immediately broke down. I didn’t really understand why, but I let the tears fall anyway. I stayed there for a few minutes, letting the tears run I maintained my openness through all the activities their course, and then proceeded on my “walkabout.” and sessions, and my emotional experience ran the spectrum: excitement, freedom, peace, surrender, Later that day, I found myself clinging for dear life to fear, joy, relief, compassion, sorrow, vulnerability, the shoulders of two other gentlemen as we navigated and strength. But a couple moments in particular the high ropes course. High up in the air, walking on thin, wobbly wires and free-swinging beams, I stood out. was utterly terrified. Plus, there was an additional n a Friday afternoon in late September, I met with a couple other gentlemen to carpool down to the Abiding Hope Men’s Retreat without much more than an open heart. I wasn’t sure why I had said “yes” to participating, other than a feeling that it was something I needed but wanted to avoid. On the drive down, I enjoyed getting to know the guys I was driving with. When we arrived at camp, we unloaded the car, got settled, and off we went.

6

challenge: I had to make it through the course with two other guys. There were several occasions when we were on the cusp of falling, but we made it. While we made it together, I left the course feeling like the other guys did more to pull me through it than me pulling my own weight. My experience at this men’s retreat indeed revealed something I needed to see. I broke down at that tree because I needed to lean on something, to let something else bear the weight. My experience on the high ropes course was so impactful, not because I had overcome some fear, but because, at times, someone else had to literally hold or pull me up as I was falling. Most of the time, it seems that I am the one who is leaned on or the one that pulls the other up. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I entered men’s retreat believing I needed neither. I am not an exception, though. I too have burdens which I cannot bear alone. Sometimes, I need to be the one leaning, to be the one lifted up. I left the men’s retreat both humbled and energized, but no longer able to believe I can live as an island unto myself. That has made the weeks that have followed challenging. I still struggle to reach out when I need help, encouragement, or support, but then I remember that tree; I remember the guys that pulled me up on the high ropes course. While I have struggled to go forward, I know I can’t go back.

On Purpose at the Women’s Retreat By: Marilyn Watson

W

hen the world is spinning 1,000 miles per hour, it’s difficult just to try to keep up, let alone feel like you are in control of your life. In an effort to find themselves and their purpose, 21 women from Abiding Hope attended the Women’s Retreat last fall. I was lucky enough to be the main presenter for the weekend. There were women of all ages and stages of life together for the weekend. Some were married, some divorced. Some women were retired, some working, and some busy with kids in the house. The ladies were all open and loving. Leaving on a Friday afternoon, we journeyed from Denver to Highlands Presbyterian Retreat Center in Allenspark, Colorado. The setting was spectacular, with a backdrop of rugged mountains out our meeting room window and a pine forest and lake to help us explore God’s greatness. 8

That evening, as an ice breaker, Lynn Grasberg led us in a fun improv situation that involved costumes, hats, feathers, and our imagination. We quickly got to know each other and began our weekend with intentional relationships developing amidst hearty laughter. As the first evening wound down, we retired to our cozy beds, looking forward to the next day’s program. After a good, hot breakfast, we gathered back in the meeting room with our mountain view. We spent the morning in learning and discussion about our sense of purpose in life, with a snack and time to chat. Free time on Saturday afternoon provided opportunities to rest, take a hike around the lake, or visit with our sisters. My favorite experience was an uphill hike through the pines and granite boulders. The weather was cold, so we bundled up in hats, jackets, and gloves. We hiked to the top of the hill, where three trees trimmed into crosses were waiting. 9

One of the women in our group described the experience this way:

“Imagine a group of determined women hiking up a very steep, stony mountain trail. Imagine balancing at the wind-whipped summit on loose cobbles and sharp boulders. Imagine discovering, though fatigued, there is still a bit further to climb. Imagine rounding an outcrop at the apex, seeing three humble, steadfast, weathered tree-branch crosses perched on a desolate cliff. Imagine Holy Ground.” After our break, we enjoyed a hearty dinner and then wrapped up our learning session. With the lights dimmed and candles on each table, we answered several questions (what, so what, and now what?) in relation to what we had experienced. The session ended with a moving prayer and a strong feeling of God being with us. We spent the rest of the evening enjoying more snacks (yes, again) and doing several craft and service projects. After all, we ARE the heart,

10

hands, and feet of Jesus. One woman said she felt the On Purpose material was concise and thought-provoking. Another attendee said, “I learned a lot. Especially that I was not using the things I truly valued in my daily life.” A third woman said she had been feeling that she might not be in the right place in her life and needed a change. She said that after going through the material and spending time in discussion, she realized she was right where God wanted her to be! One of my favorite comments came from a lovely woman who said:

“I was transformed by the love of the women on the retreat. My default setting of guardedness was reset to a new default of trust. The honesty and acceptance of these godly women reversed a lifetime of wariness, proving LOVE Always Wins.” During our time together, we experienced authentic worship and intentional relationships as we

communed, laughed, and learned together. We experienced radical generosity by giving of our time to be together and using our hands during our service projects. An hour before it was time to depart, I witnessed one member of our group brave the cold and snow, scraping the ice off everyone’s cars. She swore me to secrecy, but I observed her act of service with a full and grateful heart. When asked where I saw God, I stood before the group and, with a few tears, answered, “In your faces.” It was such a privilege to serve, teach, and learn together with my sisters in Christ. We invite anyone to come with us on the next Abiding Hope Women’s Retreat.

ALL IN Fall Retreat By: Delaney Lim

“All In” is the Senior High youth group here at Abiding Hope. This last fall, we participated in a day-long retreat with another youth group from Bethany Lutheran. The retreat started with “break-the-ice” games at Abiding Hope. Then we drove over to Ikea and divided into teams for a scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt asked teams to do things like buy a stuffed animal and give it to a kid, or buy a couple of shoppers an ice cream cone. We were also expected to work together to find various rooms or items. After the scavenger hunt, we ate dinner at Ikea. Next, we drove to Bethany Lutheran to do a small worship experience and play some games. Finally, after saying our goodbyes, we drove back to Abiding Hope, taking with us the new friendships formed and a surging strength from our community. The theme of the retreat was “I am enough.” Many times in my life, I have felt that I wasn’t enough. I wasn’t good enough, strong enough, or smart enough. These are the narratives that many of us hear from the world. However, something about coming together in a community and simply loving each other and worshiping God, redirects your vision. We are all ENOUGH in the eyes of God. This retreat built new friendships, and especially shifted my perspective to once again remind me that God loves me. The most beautiful thing is that this community truly showed me the face of God and what it means as we all try to live as children of God. 12

In the wake of this retreat and this year of transformation for many of us at Abiding Hope, I challenge you all: push yourself to be present with the communities around you. When you simply participate with the community, some radical changes can occur in you and in the world around you. You might even have some fun along the way! Push yourself to step out of your comfort-zone and engage in a different way. Push yourself to be “All In” with the community around you.

Pet Blessing

Lord God, you have made all living things, and you are even more wonderful than the things you have made. We thank you for giving us our pets who are our friends and who give us so much joy in life. May we realize that as our pets trust us to take care of them, so we should trust you to take care of us, and in our taking care of them we share in your love for all your creatures. We ask these things through your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Amen

Second Wind Fund Walk/Run By: Laurie Fox

My family and I have participated in the Second Wind Fund Walk/Run almost since its inception. Second Wind Fund is a wonderful organization that provides children and youth at risk for suicide with licensed therapists in their communities. We started attending the Walk/Run as a way to spend time together doing something we enjoyed and also walking in relationship with a larger group from Abiding Hope while we were doing it. As Abiding Hope had become a partner with the Second Wind Fund, we also felt that it was a good way to support the efforts of the church we love so much.

hits closer and closer to home. As our sons grew older, acquaintances and school peers succumbed to depression and suicide. Even our own sons both have battled in this arena. The epidemic seemed out of control. We were fortunate to have good insurance and medical/mental health benefits to get the help and support we needed. However, many others are not so fortunate. Second Wind Fund is a lifeline to those teens who desperately need help but don’t have the resources available to them.

However, as the years have gone by, the purpose The pressures and stress of the world we live in of Second Wind Fund has become something that are not lessening, and the suicide epidemic is not

fading. More and more resources are needed, and this is a way we can contribute, at least a little bit. Many of the young people who participate have lost family and friends to suicide. It is my prayer that when they see so many in their community joining together to support them, that they can feel God’s presence and love and have a renewed sense of hope for their own lives. thesecondwindfund.org 720-962-0706 Colorado Crisis Services 1-844-493-TALK (8255) coloradocrisisservices.org National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK (8255) suicidepreventionlifeline.org

Thanksgiving Baskets By: Gary Rupp

ithout a doubt, this is my favorite time W of year. I love the changing of the seasons,

the bright colored leaves, the crisp fall nights, and the first hints of the winter snows to come. But it’s also easy to get so lost in my work and other responsibilities, that the time flies by and the holiday season goes with it before I’ve scarcely noticed it has started. I have to constantly remind myself that there are other far more important priorities in my life. I need to step back and think about what this season really means. It’s not about my needs or wants, but the needs and wants of others. I don’t think any of us intend to let this happen, but the momentum of life takes over. For me, the Thanksgiving basket ministry at Abiding Hope offers a unique opportunity to stop and take the time to reflect on the needs of others in the midst of the busyness. I have participated in the Thanksgiving basket ministry for many years now, providing a financial offering for the baskets, as well as participating in the events to assemble 1200 baskets for people in our community and load them onto trucks for delivery. This occurs the Thursday and Friday before Thanksgiving each year. I have loaded the trucks in both rain and snow, and I have loved every minute of it. I always feel like I get more out of it than I give. Every year, I see new faces participating in these activities, and it’s a great joy to see this important ministry expanding. But it’s also wonderful to work alongside servants 16

from other churches, schools, and community organizations and enjoy the camaraderie we’ve shared through the years of participating in this annual event. I truly believe that the act of radical generosity offers as much to the giver as the receiver. When we give our time and our talents (as well as our resources) in support of others, the Holy Spirit touches us, reaffirming that we are all one with God and equal in God’s eyes - no matter our circumstances. We are reminded that our offerings matter. It’s a humbling experience, but also one that brings great joy to our hearts.

Advent Festival By: Pastor Jay Gamelin

Advent Festival was a terrific evening that brought together families from Abiding Hope Church and Preschool to celebrate the Christmas season. We had 400 people who made advent crafts and shopped at the preschool Christmas store and Haiti Market. Mrs. Claus was on hand to meet children (and adults!) and bouncy houses entertained all. S’mores were made and a food truck was on hand for anyone hungry for more. We closed the evening with a spirit-filled worship attended by over 650 people as the Abiding Hope Preschool kids led us in music and proclamation of the story of God. Don’t miss next year!

Awakening in Worship By: Marjorie Laird

I want to share my spiritual awakening with you. It’s not the familiar story of a challenging childhood or a reckless past with a dramatic conversion experience. In fact, it was the exact opposite. From infancy, I was in Sunday School and church every week (except when sick) until I left for college. From college forward, I attended and served in a number of churches depending on where I was living. Being a person of faith, it was part of my weekly schedule to attend worship, serve in many ways, speak to congregations and teach classes. Although there were years of music, sermons, and Christmas pageants in my church life, I began to see heaven shining a tad brighter several years ago when I was invited to speak about The Second Wind Fund during weekend worship services at Abiding Hope. The blessing of visiting congregations and sharing the mission of helping our youth was something I spoke about often. It went well and, as always, I was glad to have been invited. However, there was something unique about these services.Whatever it was that got my innermost attention (perhaps the Holy Spirit) continued to nudge me, and I proceeded to attend Saturday night service weekly until making the decision to become part of the Abiding Hope family. I was delighted that my husband, Bob, was also drawn to this family of faith, and together we gladly became immersed in the many opportunities to love and be loved. Several years have passed, and in looking back I can see God’s gradual revitalization in my spirit that has positively affected the everyday/every breath of ME. It’s easy now to trace when and what made the difference. One word summarizes it all: WORSHIP. The worship services had and continue to have themes, directions, encouragement, understanding, acceptance, and assurance that love 20

and life win. It was never one aspect of worship: the building, the music, the sermon. The worship experience combined a plethora of art, music, film, dance, contemplation, and the sharing of God’s Word that focused on the amazing reality of living as a child of God and knowing that God is love. A significant and meaningful change occurred that felt like a magic carpet ride from loneliness to a warm, all accepting and loving family. One could laugh or cry, share challenges or victories while being comforted or cheered. Encouraged by all to be authentic and give generously of not only our money, but also our gifts and abilities, I find myself now leading and serving in worship often. Through these opportunities to serve, while just being who I am and using the gifts God designed in me, I learned the true meaning of sacrificial service. A major shift happened as if a mystical hand was leading me to a different focus on living, giving, and serving. It is summed up on Abiding Hope’s statement on Radical Generosity: We are called to give more time, love, forgiveness and resources to others. We will challenge you to live more generously in every aspect of your life. I didn’t change my faith or my beliefs. My vision, however, is amazingly different. I am a child of God. I don’t go and perform a missional task; but rather I reach out and walk with others…love them…form relationships. We will link hearts and hands together as we face life’s challenges. As a child of God, I will love because God is love. I know that I can invite anyone to worship and they will be welcomed home. There is never a mask needed because I am confident that myself and others are completely accepted. I don’t leave church feeling guilty for what I might forget to do, but I walk away centered on representing God wherever I am.

“I usually shed a deep and grateful tear at communion. I have come to realize the feeling behind it is a gratitude for the meaning of communion and the joy that this church family invites ALL to the table because the gifts of God are FREE. As a child of God, I desire to be present in each moment and that allows me to see God working in so many ways. I no longer beg for God to work, but I look forward to seeing God’s presence every day and expecting an opportunity to truly be the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus.”

Unleashed Ministry Highlight

Spotlight: Denver Rescue Mission It’s early on the first Saturday of the month, and the alarms of Abiding Hope folks are beeping, chiming, and singing. “Get up,” they’re urging. “Men and women are gathering around the Denver Rescue Mission on Lawrence Street downtown, waiting for breakfast.” And so they are, clustering in the darkness, waiting. “Saturday morning,” we mutter? “Why then? Saturday’s a day

for sleeping in!” It is, but it’s also the meal service that’s most difficult for the DRM to staff. Serving our sisters and brothers isn’t always convenient for us, but it’s what’s helpful for them that we care about. Twothree hundred breakfasts later, the AH team heads for breakfast themselves and debrief their experience of being Jesus’ heart, hands, and feet at the Mission. Compassion, joy, and concern float over their eggs and bacon. Affirm families will pile into their SUVs the next Saturday and head to another Denver Rescue Mission site, The Crossing in NE Denver. They’ll serve lunch and smiles there. The children, women, and men who live there are either in a rehab program for alcoholics and addicts, or in a program to support poverty level families as they learn skills to help them move to better employment and housing. One hundred or so folks will enjoy the delicious food there, and our team will join them at the end of their service. Being Jesus’ heart, hands, and feet has benefits of love shared, laughs enjoyed together, and appreciation grown for the hard work that The Crossing participants are involved with.

There was a time in my family’s life when we were homeless. My mom and dad had put every penny they had into a small town restaurant. They worked hard from pre-dawn to post-dusk. The venture wasn’t a success. They had $25 left in their pockets after two years, and that wouldn’t last long. We had to divide up to live. My mom, sister, and I went to our grandparents’ summer cottage. My dad stayed with our other grandparents in the city, where he got his old job back and saved money until he was able to rent a duplex for

us in a shabby neighborhood. We slowly climbed out of that scary hole. Since that time I’ve believed that, with just a few changes in my life, I might be among those searching tonight for a safe place to sleep. My experience directs me to places where people experiencing homelessness gather. Do you have some times like I did? Or are you grateful that you’ve never had to go through them? Would you like to help people who have become homeless because of the lack of affordable housing and jobs that provide a living wage, a history of poverty and/or mental illness and addiction? If so, talk with me at church, or send me a text or email, and let me know that you’d like to be part of the Abiding Hope teams that serve at the Denver Rescue Mission. Our brothers and sisters there are lining up for our help. -Susie Gamelin

Unleashed ministries are those ministries led by members of Abiding Hope Church, both as small groups and individuals, who are leveraging their resources and interests into expanding the reign of Christ. These ministries are encouraged by Abiding Hope but resources are dependent on the call of those unleashed for service.

State of the Church

BEHOLD! “Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:19

Have you ever noticed in Scripture that when an angel wants to talk to someone, or God is sending a message of encouragement, it often starts with “Behold?” That’s because God is ALREADY up to something and they are being encouraged to pay attention and see the beginning of something new or amazing. This is true here at Abiding Hope as well… BEHOLD! Over the next few months, I challenge you to Behold. Behold how many new faces and families are attending worship each weekend. Behold how many children are coming up front for children’s messages. Behold how each worship service invites you to spend time in contemplation and challenges you to live out your faith at home, work, and school. Behold how many times you hear about small groups and the transformation taking place as they gather together. Behold how many servants are in action each and every week in the life of Abiding Hope. This year, on April 18 & 19, we will launch Generous Life 2020, which is a 2-year financial appeal to give sacrificially above and beyond your Forward in Faith giving. In the coming months, you will begin to hear about the vision and scope of this initiative. God is already up to many amazing things and we want Abiding Hope to be positioned to accomplish these great things and more. Behold! God is already doing great things in and through Abiding Hope! Family Support Network By: Pastor Jay Gamelin

“When you look around in our community, what are the challenges you see families facing? This was the question we addressed at our first Family Life Team meeting. This is a team made of new dads caring for newborns, moms of teenagers, empty nesters, and grandparents who have come together to dive into our vision for the Family Support Network. We discussed the amount of stress in our homes and the level of anxiety in our children. We shared the internal pressure to perform and the external reality of a confusing world. We were brought to tears as we shared in the deep pain we have for those families who are truly struggling. It is our hope to tackle big ideas and help bring life and support to families, both traditional and non-traditional, here at Abiding Hope and in the community. We are just in the initial steps of assimilating the effort brought to us last Spring via our Strategic plan for a Family Support Network, and feel called to this work that this is real-life. We ask for your prayers as we finalize our plans to bring this ministry to life. This spring you will likely receive a survey from the team asking for your input on the kinds of support you need or can provide. Your participation would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks to this community and their deep care for our families at Abiding Hope, Littleton, and beyond. 29

Contemplative Corner

Resting in God By: Pastor Claire Cassell

I have had a contemplative spirit from the time I was a little girl. Of course, I didn’t know what contemplation was at that time, but since then, I have discovered that contemplation is basically slowing down enough to rest in God in the midst of our busy lives. Resting in God can take many different forms. When I think of resting in God, the word that comes to me is “Sabbath.” The word Sabbath comes from the Hebrew word Shabbat, which means “to cease,” “to end,” or “to rest.” One of the ten commandments is: Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. Many of us remember the time when everything was closed on Sundays and we had a sense that Sundays were a special day set aside for rest, family, and recreation. In today’s culture, Sundays are often just as busy as any other day of the week, but if we look at the spirit of the Sabbath, we realize that it’s more about a mindset of mindfulness. Slowing down enough to take a deep breath and ask God for guidance…slowing down enough to take a walk and really look at the beauty of creation and feel the earth beneath our feet….. slowing down enough to turn off our cell phones and other electronic devises for an hour or two of being totally present to our loved ones. I am currently taking a nine-month course called, “the Contemplative Living Experience” through the Center for Contemplative Living in Denver. Fifteen of us gather for a weekend once a month and we learn different contemplative practices such as Centering Prayer, Spiritual Reading, and discernment. The course is designed to help us

30

integrate contemplation into our daily lives. One of the practices we focused on in our last weekend was “Sabbath Keeping.” As a pastor, I am often working on Sundays, so I’ve had to be creative and intentional about my Sabbath keeping. I recently decided to renew my commitment to keeping the Sabbath by finding regular times in my day, week, and month, that I intentionally rest in God. I keep my “God Time” for 15-20 minutes in the mornings where I am totally present with God and I schedule at least one day a week for rest and rejuvenation with my family. I also hope to schedule retreat times away at least quarterly to be alone with God. I invite you to join me on the contemplative journey by finding your own rhythm of resting in God. Feel free to reach out to me if you’d like to talk about this with a fellow traveler! I am also available for spiritual direction and life coaching. Don’t hesitate to reach out. Preschool & Kindergarten Update

Welcome to Weekday Worship

with Abiding Hope Preschool and Kindergarten By: Erin Fisher We have implemented some exciting changes in our preschool chapel structure this year! We are always striving to ensure that our focus is not only to educate but also to maintain a strong missional focus. To help us in this endeavor, we hired Emily Karlson as our Director for Early Childhood Ministries. Emily works part-time in a preschool classroom and parttime as church staff. She has been an integral part in helping to foster intentional relationships between our preschool families and the church. We want the experiences we are providing to benefit not only our preschool families but the church and the greater community. Through conversations with current and prospective families, a recurring theme was that they are afraid to attend church with small children for fear of being disruptive. Another concern was the timeframe and trying to have their children be still and quiet for an hour or more. Although we assure families that we have solutions for this such as the nursery, children’s church, and very patient and understanding pastors and congregation members, the concern remains.

them in authentic worship experiences. The power of the spirit is alive in these 30 minutes of children singing and engaging in authentic worship with their loved ones at school. We also have a fellowship and coffee time the first Tuesday of every month; people feel valued and appreciate that time spent making drinks they can grab and go to start their busy day. So far, quite a few grownups stay to worship with our preschoolers. Our hope is that the weekday worship crowd continues to grow. We’d also like congregation members to know that if they will not be able to make it to church on Sunday, they can attend a short, energetic, and intentional worship on Tuesday morning. We feel very blessed to have the support and encouragement of the greater Abiding Hope community. We could not ask for better people to walk beside us on this journey. Please come and get to know us on some Tuesday morning, 9 AM, at our Weekday Worship!

Traditionally, we have had chapel twice a week during preschool. Each Tuesday and Wednesday the whole school would gather at 9:30 AM in the worship center to sing, listen to bible stories, and pray. After a little brainstorming we decided to move our Tuesday chapel time to coincide with drop off at 9 AM. Families and friends who bring children to school now drop them off directly in the worship center and are invited to stay and worship with their little people. This chapel time is now led by Pastor Jay and is a very energetic and heartfelt time! It also serves to introduce young families to the Abiding Hope mission and vision, as well as engage 31

Church Office & Facilities Extraordinaire a.k.a Office Manager You will either see Dana at the front desk when you arrive in the church office, somewhere in the church managing all the groups that use the building, or attending church on Sunday. Tell us about yourself. Hello, my name is Dana Hess. I graduated from Arapahoe High School and from Colorado State University. My husband graduated from Columbine and University of Santa Barbara. While we met here in Colorado, we started our life out in San Diego, California. My family and I moved back to Colorado to be closer to family in May of 1999. We have two beautiful daughters that graduated from D’Evelyn High School and are now up in Fort Collins; one as a freshman and one as a senior. My husband and I are now empty-nesters and are trying to get used to not going to soccer games, carpooling, and helping with homework. We now get to go on dates and spend more time with our furry dog son. How long have you worked at Abiding Hope and what is your role? Up until one year ago, I worked in retail management for Barnes & Noble. I had just finished my graduate degree in Human Resources and began searching for something a bit different. As luck would have it, Abiding Hope had an opening for an Office Manager. I help our staff with scheduling, maintaining supplies, and communication. I also help oversee facilities use, management, and HR. I get to work with a bunch of wonderful people and have enjoyed learning new responsibilities. What made you say yes to Abiding Hope? We often called Abiding Hope “Kiera’s church.” When she was set to begin confirmation, she wanted to be closer to where her friends were. That was seven years ago. Thus, began our journey towards a new church home. We have been blessed to meet so many special people and be a part of this church. Where do you see God showing up in your work here? I see God showing up at Abiding Hope daily! It is so nice to be a part of a staff that is full of grace and laughter. We all work towards a common goal of making this the best church ever. It is amazing to be a part of the work that goes into creating an open and supportive environment.

How have you felt transformed since you began working with Abiding Hope? The biggest transformation for me has been being surrounded by faith. It is helping/reminding me to continue my journey with God. I get to experience our staff worshiping and using their strengths so that others can get closer to God. Through our church staff, I have discovered new meaning in scripture and in music. It is truly a blessing!

Andrea Meier

Office Whiz & Child Whisperer a.k.a Admin Assistant and Nursery Adult Lead You will see Andrea as she greets you when you enter the church office, you will hear her voice when she answers the phone, or you will see her handling all the babies and kiddos in the nursery during worship services.

Tell us about yourself. I relocated to Colorado in 2007 after growing up in Dallas at a Lutheran Church School and studying journalism at UT Austin in Texas. As an ice skating coach and program manager in my previous life, I moved here for a job in skating at the University of Denver. There I returned to school and studied for a Masters Degree in Arts and Culture Development and Program Management. Afterwards, wanting to pursue opportunities outside of skating and having previously worked in a church, the position at Abiding Hope felt like a natural fit. How long have you worked at Abiding Hope and what is your role? I have worked at Abiding Hope since May of 2019 and am the Administrative Assistant and Nursery Adult Lead during Worship services. What made you say yes to Abiding Hope? I saw the opportunity to be a part of a great team with Dana and Paul to help facilitate building operations. Also, it felt good that the pastors were so real and down to earth. In wanting to be a part of a Christian community near The Edge Ice Arena, Abiding Hope’s location was the perfect spot for me to find my place. Where do you see God showing up in your work here? I see God show up through meeting wonderful people who attend events and services here. It has been a pleasure getting to know many people from the women who attend Graceways, to the children who attend the nursery. Christian music is a personal passion and the awesome music ministry definitely helps me engage in worship and feel closer to God. Also, the SALT Summit was enlightening and it was wonderful to understand through this event, the essence of “God at work” in the congregation here. How have you felt transformed since you began working with Abiding Hope? Being able to work alongside people who are applying biblical principles to their lives has given me much personal inspiration. As a team, the staff learned about each other’s personality traits and work habits through an assessment program called Strength Finders and this has blessed me with transformative personal insight into myself and in how to better work with others.
