PARENTS AND CARERS NEWSLETTER

We all know that going to university is a life changing event. As parents* you provide crucial stability at a time when it can be overwhelming. So even if it doesn’t always seem like it, your help at this point in their lives is essential.

The emotional back up and support you give really can help them adjust more smoothly to university life. But we know this change in their lives is sometimes (often!) hard for everyone involved, so we’re here with information to prepare you both as much as possible.

Sign up to our Parents and Carers Newsletter which will give you the inside track on what you and your child need to know when applying to Abertay University. Sign up using our QR code.

*While we refer to parents here, this guide is for parents, guardians, carers and any supportive adults who want to help.

HELLO

Welcome to Abertay University! We’re so excited to have you here and can’t wait to show you around.

CITY LIFE

THE CITY OF DISCOVERY

We’re proud to say Dundee is an awesome place to study … and live.

When you join Abertay, you’re not just picking a place to study, you’re picking your new home. We’re close to the beach and the glorious Scottish countryside. Combined with bags of culture and the city being one of the cheapest places to live in the UK, it’s clear to see why Dundee is a top student destination.

THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC!

From Be Charlotte to Hannah Laing, Danny Wilson to The View, music is embedded in Dundee’s soul. You never know which stars of the future you might be seeing, and big names regularly play here.

SHOP LOCAL

The city is full of independent shops selling local products. Couple that with the usual high street chains like HMV, Primark, Mango and Waterstones, there’s plenty retail therapy when you need it.

TAKE ME TO THE BEACH

Nearby Broughty Ferry, AKA ‘the Ferry’, has an idyllic beach. There’s open water swimming, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and plenty golden sand to relax on.

GO WILD…

Tentsmuir, featured in the BBC’s ‘Springwatch’, is 20 mins away – a forest full of hiking/biking trails and miles of golden sand. You can dolphin and seal spot on the River Tay or swimming and kayaking in one of the nearby lochs.

…OR GO OUT!

Local nightclubs regularly host big name DJs, and there are live music venues all over the city. You’ve got two cinema chains and an art house cinema as well. And check out the cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs.

GETTING AROUND CAMPUS

If a room number begins with 1, the room is on level 1. If a room number begins with 2, the room is on level 2 and so on.

If the second digit of the room number is 5 (for example 2516) the room will be within the Kydd Building.

If the second digit is 0 (for example 1001) the room will be situated within the Old College Building.
