The Atrium Being located in the center of the Airport terminal, it’s a common ground where the two main function of the airport meet, the Arrivals zone and the departures zone. It becomes an intermediator zone where the boundaries between landscape and architecture blurs to create a gathering space for the passengers who use the space with the celebration of nature. The Airport embraces nature with the introduction of natural light, the integration of plants and water elements into the interior space to merge the natural world with the architectural

The approach is to adapt a series of equivalent spatial units or formal elements to an irregular edge condition by bending the linear array along the path of the irregularity. The irregularity can be regularized by visualizing it as a series of curvatures and recognizing the center of radius for each arc segment as well as the points of inflection where changes of curvature occur. Airport are becoming placeless cities that are disjunctioned from the cities they Serve.

Lines Fragmenting to create the form of the Airport terminal.

The organazation of the Airport was thought on single level operation, segregating Arrivals and Depature on two eings. The Central zone act as an organizing area of the building.

Blurring the bounderies Between the Airport the City with lines emerging from the lake side.

Clarifaying the Geometry for the building.

When designing the airport, I was curious about what the Airport of the 21st century can be and what shall it offer to the city and the people who use it every day including passengers and terminal employees. The 21st century as most would agree is the era of information where technology has shortened distance with the advance of transportation and communication. The Airport should no longer be eccentric to the city it serves by creating buffer zones, boundaries and wide setbacks from curbside. The hypothesis is based on the fact even in a domestic airport the passenger can spend more than 30 minutes through security, check in and immigration & 10 – 15 minutes for arrival passengers, hence the terminal building shall give porosity to the passenger to be able to see the airside and the apron while being processed.

Perspective rendering

The building as seen from different perspectives changes its form, from the west and east elevations it might seem as if two curvilinear buildings have collided each other.

Site

Area: 49,681m2

The site was chosen for designing a conventional center because of its proximity to different services such as hotels, banks, restaurants and transportation.

Concept: Porosity Discription When referring to porous architecture the term is mainly understood to solely concern a physical analysis of space and the way in which people flow through and writing the pores of the city. Humans are porous by nature, as the bordering creature who has no border. True urbanity occurs where humans can mix in unrestricted borderless environment and it is the way in which these diverse people mix that give a city its special character. Porosity refers to the level at which the soluble nature of human, be it collectively as culture or individually through experience is welcomed and embraced naturally within the city.

Responding to urban Setback The curve was intentionaly put to create urban plaza(Meskel Square).

The prorams arranged on the site based on the relation to site context and program relationship.

The Main lobby is a space that connects all the major functions of the building by applying the idea of porosity to create visual and physical connections both horizontally and vertically. The circular void was intentionally designed to create connection to the basement programs and bring in natural light. The building is designed to be a civic building that can contribute to the public realm and, it does this by being porous, inviting people to the building though transparency and programs that citizens of the city can use such as cafes, restaurants, cinema, banks, library, shops and art galleries. The Amphitheater is designed to host different political, social and commercial events. Under the amphitheater structure the space can be used for informal markets to integrate the city life and public programs included in the building.

The house is designed for a large single family with 5 bedrooms, a guest bedroom and a master bedroom for the parents. The Ground floor encompasses the living + dining areas and the kitchen. The design of the house was set to provide a formal house for a large family, by situating the building on the corner of the site, I was able to provide large front yard with parking and a garden next to the living room. The Roof I wanted to create a different house that could stand out from its neighboring but also keep the context of the site, the building has different appearance from all its sides so the roof becomes a unifying element being a gently sloping roof creating a shaded space for the terrace. The project is located in Addis Ababa with a plot area of 160m2 as an intern architect i was assigned to design a residential house with a maximum of 3 stories, the programs required by the clients were a large garden, a living room, 3 bedrooms, a master bedroom and a prayer room. The concept for the house was to make ground floor to encompass parking 2 cars, living+ dining room. On the first floor 3 bedroom for their children and a guest bedroom is located. The master bedroom with the roof garden is located on the second floor. The flat roof covering the house overhangs to shade the terrace on the third floor, when seen from ground level the roof seems to float over the house.

The section drawing illustrates how individual spaces are inteconnected by the central atria and through floor level difference.

The Conceptual approach is based on the fact man and nature are inseparable, even though man has created negative impacts on it. We believe that humans, animals and nature as a whole are mutually interdependent. Our concept aims to develop a home that can create a feeling that the natural and the artificial feature can co-exist together, indoor and outdoor spaces to create a dynamic feeling as the family uses these spaces surrounded by trees, flower and natural light all together creating the feeling of being outside while using outdoor spaces. First Floor Plan View from the garden

Model

The Concept of the house was “stacking” different volumes to create a large garden, a parking space for 4 cars. The larger volume that is uplifted from the ground occupies Private areas, the smaller volume is for living and service areas and the vertical volume is for the stair.

The design of the book shelf was initiated to use a combination of two materials 30mm metal frame as a supporting element and 2cm wood to place books. The variation in the arrangement of the wood boards was to create a visual interest when placed inside a room.

Location Problem Statement As Ethiopians most of our household activities are held outdoors for instance laundry, Cooking, Berbere mascha, and in times of funeral and weddings however, the typology is weak at addressing social life vertically and the use of modern technology for energy utilization. The open space allocated at condominium site is inadequate for the inhabitant’s outdoor activities, children playground, cloth drying and parking. The current open spaces at condominium site are not well designed for the needs of different age groups; in terms of functionality they are rarely used by adults and the elderly due to the limit of choices of things to do at open spaces.
