Born and raised in Long Beach, CA, Eli Marcus began singing at three years old. Growing up in a musical family, he has become one of the most sought-after Chassidic performers. Eli has released three albums to date: Dovid Hamelech, an original Jewish music album composed by the legendary Yossi Green. Energy, an Israeli-style album of Chassidic dance music, and Eli's latest album, Yogati, released in January 2019, all of which showcase his soulful, energetic vocals and a timeless, authentic sound.
A new-age Chassidic singer, composer, and entertainer, he is a renowned “vocal powerhouse” and gained popularity soon after he began releasing his albums in 2007. However, the debut of his celebrated “Thank You Hashem” gripped the attention of Jewish music fans worldwide. Beri’s music emanates a fresh energy in soulful, creative singing. His unique style, inspired by mystical Chassidus, aims to motivate and elevate fans around the globe.

A LEGENDARY MUSIC LEGACY MOVES ON TO THE NEXT LEVEL—AND THE NEXT GENERATION
Benny Friedman and Eli Marcus, two of today’s most vibrant and exciting singers, don’t just share the stage with a tangible chemistry and energetic connectivity. They share the natural connection of cousinhood. In their case, it’s a bond of family, talent and fun, as well as a profoundly musical heritage that goes back through generations. And at KMR, that heritage sparks to life in one of the year’s highlight performances.
As they both grew up out of New York, Benny in Minnesota and Eli in California, where their respective families were Chabad Shluchim on a mission to ignite Jewish sparks in the cold surroundings, times spent together were few and far between in the early years. Yet the families never grew distant—the Friedman and Marcus families stayed close, and the times they got together were memorable and special. “When we all got together, it was fun and lebedig, and there were tons of special family songs. We had zemiros songs from our grandparents which everyone loved to sit around and sing. It was real family time,” Eli describes. For example, the cousins both recall singing ‘Zeidy Friedman’s Maoz Tzur,’ a unique Friedman family tune which their grandfather heard in a shul in Cracow and passed down.
Although the entire family sang and harmonized, of course, Avraham Fried, their famous uncle with the golden voice, looms large in the memories.
“When I was a kid, before computers were so popular, we would get Avremel’s cassette tapes in the mail, his music
albums pre-released and sent to our family before they came out to the public,” Benny reminisces. “The one which stands out the most is probably the Chazak album. That really arrived with a bang. So many songs felt groundbreaking, so many became pumping hits.”
Eli’s standout memory is of the 1993 Shtar Hatnoim album. “It was released right before my oldest brother got married, and when I was invited up to sing at the wedding, I said I wanted to sing “Baruch Haba.” [Remember when that was all the rage? ‘Baruch Haba, ay, Baruch Haba, Melech Hamashiach…] As it had just come out, it was not super-popular yet, but its energy drew me.”
Although Avremel’s presence was always in the background, as a famous superstar of the Jewish music world, both Benny and Eli, who are at the summit of today’s scene, say that after they grew up and had some worldly experience, they marvelled more at their uncle’s persona, standards, and lifestyle. “A chassidishe superstar, who shows the way in how to meld those two oxymoronic realities,” is how Benny
puts it. In other words, a role model. This dynamic was on display in 2018, when, as Avremel wowed the KMR audience in person, his nephews Benny, Shmuel, Bentzi and Eli Marcus joined him virtually for a warm nostalgic medley, coming full circle.
The musicality is combined with something deeper, an emotional expression that audiences can immediately sense. “I know so many people who have a strong connection to their Yiddishkeit because, as children, they connected with the music and felt something inside. Music is another dimension of our connection with the Eibishter,” Benny reflects. “It gives something to the soul.”
Benny shares that he recently heard from one of the Bluzhever Rebbes that his great-greatgrandfather, Reb Benztion, used to lead the crowd in uplifting davening as the baal tefillah in the original Bluzhev court, under the leadership of the Tzvi LaTzaddik.
Just two generations back, their grandfather, Rav Yaakov Moshe Hakohen Freidman, was imprisoned in Prague, and while there, he took on himself several resolutions which he wrote in his diary. Tellingly, some of these were music related. “He wrote that he would always sing zemiros, that he would not sing songs that goyim sang, and that he’d say a lot of Tehillim each day,” Benny says. “Which shows the important role that singing played in our grandfather’s life.” Fascinatingly, Reb Yaakov Moshe, a Bobover chassid, remained a staunch Bobover even as he worked in the administration of the Lubavitcher yeshivos and became close to the Lubavitcher Rebbe. While his family became part of the Chabad chassidus, they’ve always retained the Zeide’s legacy of niggunim, especially on Shabbos, when the slow, inspiring Bobover “Kol Mekadeish” takes center stage. In 2008, Avraham Fried recorded this beautiful piece on an a capella album called My Father’s Zemiros, together with a choir made up of Friedman family members. The album sold well, with all proceeds donated to a tzedakah close to his heart, the Yad LShliach organization.
In another twist, the Friedman /Marcus family just recently became aware that their great-grandfather, who was banished to Siberian exile during the war, wrote charuzim [Hebrew song lyrics] about themes such as Shabbos, Yomtov, and Yerushalayim in rhyme and acrostics, while he was there. “Even while undergoing those tzaros, he had the clarity to write beautiful songs,” Eli points out. Because the sound of Jewish song plays on and carries us through to happier themes, even in our darkest times.
As a veteran KMR performer, Benny Friedman is proud to call the program one of his favorite performance destinations of the entire year. He’s also proud of the way KMR has developed its musical muscle since those early days.
“In 2008, we might or might not have had to borrow the speakers from the musician, while today the production at KMR is world-class; it’s the best show of the year.”
It's not just the production which stands out. It’s actually the familiarity of the audience, where Benny feels he can let his guard down and sing a little more freely. “It’s not bombastic, it’s a setting which feels like family.” Both a shared passion for music and a shared comfort create the special intimacy. A concert at a hotel program is very different to a concert in a venue where the audience have just gathered together for a night’s entertainment, each person coming from their own individual, hectic life. At KMR, during an uplifting Yomtov spent together, the room full of people have bonded into a cohesive group, ready to relax and experience music together, and it’s that special all-in-ittogether feeling that brings performers back so enthusiastically, time after time. The crowd feels united, and in that way, the artist feels at one with the crowd too.
Beautiful moments which Benny has shared with KMR include a heartwarming Motzaei Shabbos concert in Vail, Colorado which started with classic Melave Malka niggnim. Another year, there was a magnificent duet with MBD, and, in Pesach 2017, he sang Sheya
Mendlowitz’s hand-picked medley of the iconic songs played in decades of Jewish music, with the audience caught up in nostalgia, transported back to the hits of Pirchei, Carlebach, MBD, and Avraham Fried.
Eli Marcus also has happy memories of the audience’s warmth. “From my first experience at KMR, which was a winter program in Palm Springs back in 2013, the audience really welcomed me warmly. I remember singing there around the piano, with Avrumi Berko, and I remember how the KMR crowd appreciated the nostalgia, which is a big deal for me,” Eli says. He also sang at the Next Generation KMR Pesach concert in Tampa, Florida, during the Covid period.
For KMR, the cousins’ joint odyssey really started when Avromy Werner stepped into a wedding, intending to stay for just three minutes. But Benny and Eli were on stage, and the magic pulled him in. “I couldn’t leave! And that’s when I knew this was a duet made in
Heaven.” For Avromy, whose discriminating taste in Jewish music seeks out the best for his guests, the two are his favorite duet in Jewish music. “The nostalgic songs, MBD and Avremel’s finest moments of the seventies, eighties and nineties are utterly natural to them. It’s the material they grew up on, and you can hear that. But whatever they sing, it’s always geshmak and always memorable.”
Over the years, the KMR team and guests have come to feel like family. Each year, as Benny leaves on Chol Hamoed Pesach behind to go back to his own family, he receives something special to take with—a beautiful kosher lePesach birthday cake to bring home to his son, who was born on the last day of Chol Hamoed. This year will be especially meaningful—when he goes home from Scottsdale, it will be to his son’s bar mitzvah. Mazel tov! And here’s to many more incredible concerts together!
