HoneyBee is a fast, flowy, winding, perfectly manicured course that is pure fun. Mountain bikers can navigate this trail and not have to worry about getting lost. Golder Ranch Mountain Bike Trails H 36 min from resort The 50-Year, Golder Ranch, the Chutes, Upper 50, and Middlegate are a part of the 50 year trail and are a must do Tucson mountain bike ride. The trail is beautiful and well kept by volunteers. This is a great trail for mountain bikers of all levels. The Chutes are a roller coaster experience. There is some technical riding here.

Lemmon will take you from the desert valley up to a Ponderosa pine covered mountain peak, the highest point in the Santa Catalina range. Enjoy the scenic viewpoints, picnic areas, a trout-stocked lake and miles of hiking trails. It is generally about 30 degrees cooler than Tucson.

There’s a ski lift ride open year round. The sky ride to the summit takes about ½ hour and covers approximately 1 mile. You depart the base of the ski area near 8200 foot elevation and climb to 9100 feet-where the earth meets Heaven Ski Lift prices range from $7 to $12

Catalina State Park sits at the base of the majestic Santa Catalina Mountains. The park is a haven for desert plants and wildlife and nearly 5,000 saguaros. The 5,500 acres of foothills, canyons and streams invites camping, picnicking and bird watching — more than 150 species of birds call the park home. The park provides miles of equestrian, birding, hiking, and biking trails which wind through the park and into the Coronado National Forest at elevations near 3,000 feet.

Easy-to-follow self-guided nature hikes take you through grassy desert plains and into the northern foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains. A long flowing creek gives you a great opportunity to view abundant desert wildlife.

Saguaro National Park West (Tucson Mountain) a Red Hills Visitor Center,

Tucson, AZ 85743 v (520 773-5100, O www.americansouthwest.net H 45 min from hotel Fifteen miles west of the city of Tucson, the Tucson Mountain region of Saguaro National Park is smaller, lower and biologically younger than the east section but the saguaros are just as large and extensive. This mountainous park is a popular place to see the massive saguaro cactus, which grows only in the Sonoran Desert. View the park with a scenic drive or take advantage of the many hiking trails.

The north and west areas are generally flat with uninterrupted forests of the huge cacti, while the land becomes more mountainous towards the south and east, rising to a high point of 4,687 feet (Wasson Peak) where the saguaro are replaced by scattered bushes and sparse grassland, the temperatures are lower and the environment more moist.

Entrance fee paid for admission to Saguaro National Park is good for seven days and includes both the Tucson Mountain District (West) and (see below) the Rincon Mountain District (East).

Saguaro National Park East (Rincon Mountains) a 3693 S Old Spanish Trail,

Tucson, AZ 85730 v (520) 733-5153, O www.nps.gov/sagu H 47 min from hotel Seventeen miles east of the center of Tucson, the Rincon Mountains section of Saguaro National Park is the larger and more remote of the two halves of the preserve, and includes an extensive mountainous area with hills as high as 8,664 feet (Mica Mountain). The terrain of Saguaro National Park, differs from that found at its sister park to the west. Rolling foothills are softened with trees, grasses, and desert shrubs. An 8-mile loop drive around Cactus Forest Drive provides an overview of the park area.

The cacti here are as large but grow slightly less dense than those at Tucson Mountain in the west, with more intervening bushes and other vegetation so the

overall effect is not quite so dramatic. Faced with a choice between the two, the west is preferable for a short visit, though the east offers many more opportunities for extended hiking.

Camelback Mountain a 5700 N Echo Canyon Dr,

Soaring 2,704-feet high, Camelback’s summit offers spectacular views of Phoenix and Scottsdale and can be reached from the 1.2mile (incredibly steep) Summit Trail. If you’re looking for a more low-key hike, the 1.5-mile Cholla Trail on the east side of the mountain offers a more gradual incline, at least until you near the summit. You can also try one of the several beginner-friendly trails that circle Camelback’s base. Hiking Camelback Mountain is best attempted earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon when the desert heat is bearable. But no matter when you decide to climb, make sure you have plenty of water and sunscreen.

Patagonia Lake State Park was established in 1975 as a state park and is an ideal place to find whitetail deer roaming the hills and great blue herons walking the shoreline. The park offers a campground, beach, picnic area with ramadas, tables & grills, a creek trail, boat ramps, and a Marina.

The nearby Lakeside Market offers boat rentals and supplies. The park is popular for water skiing, fishing, camping, picnicking, and hiking. And the tracks of the New Mexico/Arizona railroad lie beneath the lake and remnants of the old historic line may be found at the Nature Conservancy in Patagonia. Hikers can stroll along the creek trail and see birds such as the canyon towhee, Inca dove, vermilion flycatcher, black vulture, and several species of hummingbirds.
