• Constructed a monumental blanket from weighty and labored materials. Materials were hand-dyed, painted & spackled to achieve the desired aesthetic, then constructed into one form for a public exhibition.

This thesis redefines the relationship between pre-existing architectural elements,seeing how they start to interact and affect each other, and how they begin to interact with the land and surrounding that it’s been positioned on. By placing this project on the site for the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library located in Medora, North Dakota, I am able to explore these relationships independently, without intrusion or hindrance of the surrounding urban context.

As Theodore Roosevelt famously quoted the west african proverb “speak softly and carry a big stick;and you will go far.”

Therefore the objective of this thesis is to explore what it would mean for architecture to speak softly, or as we might say exist softly. Where even touching the ground feels like an imposition and yet isn’t it also true that any act of monumentalizing architecture is already carrying a big stick?

HOME LOCATED IN JOSHUA TREE, ENTRY IN THE HOME COMPETITION.

This home is situated in Joshua Tree, characterised by its rugged rock formations and stark desert landscapes, dotted with twisted, bristled joshua trees and cacti.This project focuses on the idea of nature coming into the home and multiple ways of enjoying the landscape. This project proposes a home that is as much for the user as it is for the nature dwelling within its structure. The form of the home enables multiple vantage points which frame not only the inside, but also the outside. The apertures act as a compositional device that frame the users sightline to specific moments inside or outside. The planes in the landscape highlight certain pieces of nature, which creates a dialogue between background and foreground, when being viewed through the apertures.

CRITTER HUT

Resembling a small critter, creeping through the dense forest, this hut proposes a space that allows for the user to experience nature from multiple viewpoints. To achieve this, four different sides of the hut developed in differing manners, with each side creating its own unique aperture type which enhances the users outlook of nature, depending on where they are.

The final studio in the core sequence introduces students to independent thinking and integrative design through a small scale project. With one foot in core and one pointed towards thesis, the pedagogy is based on culminating all previous core studios by charging the students with taking a disciplinary position on the role of mass, interiority, ground, aperture, or surface articulation (AMIGAA), or possibly relations across all five. The studio, as a whole, works on the same project and site with different trajectories according to the framework laid out by each instructor. This provides a platform for students to see how the same problem can be seen through different lenses, from the conceptual to the phenomenological. Precedence research is used as a vehicle for understanding their latent diagrams in relation to AMIGAA as well as cultivating a genealogy-based ethos.

THE FIRST EXCERCISE OF THIS ASSIGNMENT WAS TO TRANSLATE THE LANGUAGE FROM THE CHOSEN PRECEDENT, AND APPLY THAT TO A RESIDENTIAL PROJECT.

IT WAS APPLIED TO THIS ITERATION THROUGH THE FOLDING OF THE FACETED ROOF ONTO THE EXTERIOR FACADE WITH APERTURE CUTOUTS , SIMILAR TO THE PRECEDENT.

FOR THE SECOND EXCERCISE, WE WERE TO FUR THER DEVELOP OUR SCHEME AND IDEAS FROM THE FIRST EXERCISE.

THIS WAS DEVELOPED BY CREATING MULTIPLE MASSES OF DIFFERENT SIZES TO CREAT A SMALL COMMUNITY OF HOUSING.

THIS COMMUNITY ALLOWED THE TENANT FLEXIBILI TY IN TERMS OF HOW MUCH SPACE THEY REQUIRED BY EITHER CHOSING ONE MASS OR MORE, DEPEND ING ON THEIR NEEDS.

LIBRARY EXTENSION FOR THE CONTEMPORARY CULTURAL CENTER [CCCB] IN BARCELONA

The approach to making a new city library was to insert a simple, bar building into the site that spans over conditions of both open and built space, solid and void. Running parallel to the Meier building, the sectional shaping of the bar comes from an almost indexical response to each of the conditions it encounters. Beginning at the northeast edge of the site along the Carrer dels Angels, the new volume intersects the perpendicular bar of the CCCB, nimbly moves through and along the edge of the internal courtyard, passes again through the CCCB and terminates as a cantilever over the main square of the Plaça de Joan Coromines.

Rather than maintaining the new library and the existing Cultural Center as two discrete institutions and buildings, our project imagines conating the two programs. The new institution then becomes both a locus of exhibition and a repository of knowledge, albeit in dierent forms. The new building literally cross-breeds with the existing building at moments of intersection, enabling very dierent routes through the whole.
