Establish a clear instructional focus, such as developing comprehension strategies, building vocabulary, introducing literary language or supporting content knowledge. A well-defined purpose directs teacher modelling and shapes children’s engagement (Duke & Roberts, 2010).

Select the Text Choose a text that aligns with your instructional goal, offers rich and engaging language and provides meaningful conceptual depth.

Texts should connect to and build upon children’s background knowledge. Consider cultural and linguistic relevance by selecting literature that reflects the diverse identities and experiences of all learners (Bishop, 1990; Ladson-Billings, 1995; Reflecting Realities, 2025).

Pre-Read the Text Previewing the text enables teachers to anticipate challenging vocabulary, highlight key ideas and identify natural stopping points.

Research underscores that pre-reading supports coherent and responsive instruction (Zucker, Ward, & Justice, 2009).

Develop a short set of questions that connects directly to your instructional purpose. Plan where to pause for think-alouds, predictions, clarifications, defining vocabulary or brief discussions that draw attention to book-handling skills or concepts of print.

Purposeful questioning, vocabulary-focused modelling and carefully chosen stopping points support deeper comprehension and help children build a robust and transferable word knowledge base (Beck & McKeown, 2006).

Briefly explain why the text is being read and what children should pay attention to. Establish the children’s background knowledge, engage their interest and support their metacognitive awareness before the story begins (Fisher et al., 2004).

Read fluently, expressively and with attention to pacing. Use planned think-alouds to model intentional strategies for comprehension, strategic reasoning and knowledge development. Facilitate brief but meaningful opportunities for children to talk, ensuring alignment with your instructional purpose (Johnston, 2016).

Support Post-Reading Reflection Guide children in revisiting the learning goal, discussing key ideas and reflecting on their understanding. This post-reading dialogue consolidates comprehension and supports the transfer of strategies to independent reading (McGee & Schickedanz, 2007).

Extend the Learning Provide follow-up experiences through discussion, writing, playbased exploration or related texts. These extensions reinforce concepts, deepen understanding and offer additional contexts for meaningful language use (Duke, Pearson, Strachan, & Billman, 2011).

Intentional Read-Alouds for Diverse Learners

Intentional read-alouds offer powerful opportunities to create inclusive literacy environments where every child can see themselves, hear themselves and learn through texts that honour their linguistic, cognitive, cultural and experiential diversity. For children who are bilingual or multilingual, who are neurodiverse or who come from varied socioeconomic, cultural or family backgrounds, thoughtful text selection is not simply a matter of preference. It is fundamental to equitable literacy instruction. Texts mediate children’s developing identities as readers, shape what they perceive as ‘normal’ or valued and influence the accessibility of academic language, background knowledge and conceptual understanding. When teachers select read-aloud texts with intention and respond to the needs of diverse learners, they strengthen comprehension, engagement, participation and belonging.

Representation and Identity

Representation is central to the power of intentional read-alouds. All children benefit from books that function both as mirrors that reflect their lived experiences and as windows that offer insight into the lives of others (Bishop, 1990). For multilingual learners, texts that incorporate translanguaging practices, bilingual dialogue or cultural schemas connected to home experiences can validate their linguistic identities and strengthen the bridge between oral language and academic vocabulary. For children from minoritised cultural groups, seeing characters who share their heritage, family structures or community experiences can nurture a sense of affirmation and reduce the ‘cultural distance’ that sometimes characterises school-based texts.

Neurodiverse children similarly benefit from representation that avoids stereotypes and portrays diverse ways of thinking, communicating and interacting. Books that feature characters with autism, ADHD or sensory sensitivities, framed with authenticity, agency and strength, can help children to understand themselves and others more compassionately while supporting teachers to model inclusive language and perspective-taking.

Linguistic Diversity

For bilingual and multilingual children, intentional read-alouds can scaffold the acquisition of complex vocabulary and academic syntax. Choosing books with rich but well-supported language, recurring phrases and opportunities for discussion helps children to map new words onto existing linguistic knowledge. Texts with embedded cultural references, code-switching or multilingual labels can be particularly supportive when teachers pause to explain meanings, draw connections to children’s home languages and encourage children to share how concepts sound or are expressed in their families.

At the same time, intentional read-alouds for multilingual learners benefit from texts that are not oversimplified. Challenging narratives paired with strong teacher mediation, such as previewing key vocabulary, linking to background knowledge, modelling inferencing aloud, enable access to high-level content and prevent the lowering of cognitive demand often inadvertently applied to emerging bilinguals.

Children learning English as an additional language may encounter print in multiple language systems and may have different experiences with book handling and text conventions.

Some adaptations for these learners include: • • •

Incorporate home languages: Where possible, include bilingual books or read stories first in the child’s home language, then in English. Invite families to share favourite stories from their culture.

Contrastive analysis: Briefly compare print conventions across languages. (e.g. right-to-left vs. left-to-right reading direction).

Oral language bridge: Encourage children to orally discuss stories in their strongest language before connecting to English print. This helps deepen comprehension and strengthens print-meaning connections.

Cultural and Socioeconomic Contexts

Children’s interpretations of texts are influenced by their funds of knowledge—the cultural, familial and community-based knowledge they bring with them (Moll et al., 1992). Intentional read-alouds that incorporate stories set in diverse communities, households and environments can affirm these experiences. Choosing texts with varied family structures, community traditions and socioeconomic realities helps resist deficit narratives. Teachers can enhance relevance by connecting read-alouds to children’s lived contexts: linking characters’ problem-solving to familiar community spaces, discussing how characters’ choices resonate with local experiences or drawing attention to vocabulary that describes everyday practices.

Neurodiversity, Processing Differences and Cognitive Accessibility

Neurodiverse learners, such as those with autism, ADHD, DLD, dyslexia or sensory processing differences, benefit from carefully selected texts that align with their cognitive and linguistic strengths.

Books with predictable structures, strong visual supports, clear narrative arcs and explicit causal relationships can reduce cognitive load and facilitate comprehension. For some children, multimodal texts (e.g. picture books with graphic or sensory elements) can provide additional pathways to understanding.

Teachers can further support neurodiverse learners by using intentional scaffolding during read-alouds: previewing plot sequences, naming emotions explicitly, connecting narrative events to sensory experiences or breaking stories into shorter segments with opportunities to move, talk or summarise.

Structured, repetitive routines: Use consistent language and routines during read-alouds. Predictable structure helps reduce cognitive load.

Multisensory approaches: Combine tactile, visual and auditory input. Use textured letters or incorporate songs/rhythms when tracking text.

Shorter sessions with sensory breaks: You may need to consider chunking read-alouds into shorter intervals for children with attention challenges. Offer movement or sensory options during or after sessions.

Assistive technology: Use text-to-speech apps or large print adaptations for children with visual processing difficulties or dyslexia.

Avoiding Stereotypes and Ensuring Authenticity A critical aspect of selecting texts for diverse learners is recognising and avoiding stereotypical or tokenistic representation. Authenticity matters for both accuracy and emotional safety: children can quickly recognise when a portrayal does not ring true. Teachers should also consider the narrative roles of diverse characters. Books that position minoritised characters solely as helpers, sidekicks or sources of moral lessons can reinforce harmful hierarchies. Instead, intentional selection prioritises texts where children from diverse backgrounds hold agency, solve problems, express complexity and inhabit joyful, everyday experiences.

Building a Balanced and Inclusive Text Set Teachers can evaluate their text sets by asking: ● Whose stories are present? Whose are missing? ● What languages, identities and family structures appear in the texts? ● Are children represented in everyday, joyful scenarios as well as in culturally specific stories? ● Do texts promote both familiarity and new perspectives? ● Are neurodiverse ways of experiencing the world portrayed respectfully? ● Is linguistic diversity treated as an asset?

A balanced collection includes narrative and informational texts, culturally sustaining literature, texts that prompt inquiry or challenge assumptions and books that invite critical conversations about fairness, identity and belonging.

Responsive Read-Aloud Practice Responsive practices include: ● inviting children to share words or phrases from their home languages; ● pausing to clarify cultural references or metaphors; ● linking characters’ experiences to children’s funds of knowledge; ● validating diverse interpretations of characters’ motivations or emotions; ● preparing visual supports or sensory accommodations for neurodiverse learners; ● using open-ended questions that encourage children to bring their identities into the discussion.

These practices help all children access the text’s full meaning while fostering an inclusive, dialogic classroom culture.

Chapter 2

Building Motivation and Engagement to Read Why Motivation and Engagement Matter Reading motivation and engagement are central components of children’s literacy development.

Motivation refers to the internal processes that influence whether, why and how learners choose to participate in reading, while engagement captures the observable behaviours that arise from these motivational states. Motivation is multidimensional, encompassing self-efficacy, intrinsic and extrinsic orientations toward reading, purpose, autonomy and social dimensions (Li & Gan, 2022; Readence et al., 1989; Wigfield & Guthrie, 2000). When learners are motivated, they engage more deeply and persistently with texts, demonstrating heightened attention, curiosity and strategic processing.

Engagement reflects these behaviours in action. The OECD (2016) conceptualises reading engagement in terms of interest, enjoyment, a sense of control, social involvement and wide-ranging reading practices. Considerable research has demonstrated that both motivation and engagement predict reading achievement more strongly than socioeconomic status or instructional time (Guthrie & Wigfield, 2000; Kurikova & Cremin, 2020). Importantly, motivation and engagement are malleable: they can be nurtured, strengthened and supported through intentional instructional practices.

The intentional read-aloud is one of the most powerful tools for fostering reading motivation and engagement. Rich, communal, meaningful encounters with texts create opportunities for connection, curiosity, social interaction and joyful reading experiences. Intentional read-alouds enable teachers to cultivate positive reading identities, promote autonomy through carefully structured choice, model the value of reading and support comprehension through discussion and shared meaning-making (Morrison & Wlodarczyk, 2009; Ness, 2023). This chapter explores the foundations of reading motivation and engagement and demonstrates how purposeful, intentional read-aloud practices can help build and sustain these critical dispositions.

What is reading motivation?

Reading motivation is multidimensional and relates to the feelings individuals associate with engaging in or avoiding reading contexts. It is influenced by several underlying components, including self-efficacy, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, purpose for reading and various social aspects of motivation (Li & Gan, 2022; Readence et al., 1989; Wigfield & Guthrie, 2000).

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation Intrinsic motivation stems from internal reasons for reading, such as enjoyment, curiosity and personal interest. Extrinsic motivation, by contrast, arises from external pressures or rewards such as praise, results or competition. While extrinsic motivators can initiate reading behaviour, intrinsic motivation is far more robust in supporting deep engagement, strategic thinking and comprehension (McGeown, 2013; Wang & Guthrie, 2004). Children who read because they want to read, rather than because they have been compelled to, demonstrate richer understanding and more sustained reading habits.

Why Motivation Matters for Reading Development Motivation is a significant predictor of reading success. Multiple studies have demonstrated its influence on reading volume, frequency, comprehension and long-term academic growth (Guthrie & Wigfield, 2000; Pressley, 2006). Motivated readers read more, choose more challenging texts and self-initiate reading behaviours. They also develop more positive reading identities and are more resilient in the face of difficulty.

Motivation and Engagement as Interconnected Factors

Engagement is inseparable from motivation. When children believe reading is worthwhile, enjoyable and meaningful, they are more likely to engage deeply. Engagement reflects not just the act of reading, but also the quality of involvement—how much effort, strategy and emotion a child invests in the activity (Guthrie & Humenick, 2004).

Reading Engagement as a Protective Factor

Reading engagement has powerful long-term implications. Research shows that high levels of engagement may lessen the impact of socioeconomic disadvantage on reading achievement (Kurikova & Cremin, 2020). Engaged readers also exhibit greater resilience, confidence and overall wellbeing (OECD, 2021). Engagement supports broader academic success as well as literacy outcomes.

The Role of Intentional Read-Alouds Why Intentional Read-Alouds Are Ideal for Fostering Motivation

Intentional read-alouds occupy a unique and powerful position in literacy instruction because they nurture the motivational foundations that underpin children’s desire to read. By combining cognitive, emotional and social dimensions of learning, intentional read-alouds create conditions in which children are more inclined to approach reading with interest, curiosity and confidence. A read-aloud transforms reading into a shared, multimodal experience in which children listen, visualise, predict, respond and make personal connections within a supportive communal context. This collective experience is deeply motivational, as it frames reading as enjoyable, meaningful and socially significant (Gambrell, 2011).

Research has consistently shown that intentional read-alouds expose children to rich vocabulary, complex syntax and diverse genres they may not yet be able to decode independently (Beck & McKeown, 2001; Lennox, 2013). By removing the demands of decoding, read-alouds allow children to focus on emotion, imagination and understanding – key affective drivers that strengthen intrinsic motivation to read (McGee & Schickedanz, 2007).

Intentional read-alouds are distinguished by their purposeful design to support specific learning outcomes. When teachers select texts with clear motivational goals, pre-plan strategic stopping points and read with expression and fluency, they model not only skilled reading but also the pleasure and value of engaging with texts (Johnston, 2016; Wright, 2019). Purposeful facilitation – such as thoughtful questioning, scaffolding and connecting text ideas to children’s lives and lived experiences – strengthens children’s sense of relevance, autonomy and competence, all of which are critical components of reading motivation (Fisher, Flood, Lapp, & Frey, 2004). In this way, intentional readalouds play a central role in fostering positive reader identities and cultivating the internal desire to read.

Intentional Read-Alouds Foster Motivation in Several Key Ways: 1. Helping children connect personally with stories

When texts reflect children’s experiences, interests and identities, they are more likely to engage emotionally and cognitively. Personal relevance enhances motivation, supports empathy and increases willingness to participate in reading-related activities (Gambrell, 2011).

2. Introducing high-interest, high-quality texts not yet accessible independently

Children benefit enormously from hearing rich, sophisticated literature that lies beyond their independent reading level. Such texts expand vocabulary, background knowledge and conceptual thinking – key drivers of both motivation and comprehension (Duke, 2000; Duke & Roberts, 2010).

3. Cultivating curiosity, anticipation and joy

Why Intentional Read-Alouds Are Ideal for Building Engagement Intentional read-alouds create optimal conditions for reading engagement by deliberately structuring the experience to support emotional, cognitive and social involvement. Engagement is not accidental; it is cultivated through carefully orchestrated interactions that invite children into the text, into conversation with peers and into purposeful meaning-making (Guthrie & Wigfield, 2000; Morrison & Wlodarczyk, 2009). The following components illustrate how intentional read-alouds foster this engagement:

1. Emotional Connection

When teachers choose texts that resonate with children’s interests, identities and lived experiences, they create emotional entry points that heighten curiosity, empathy and enjoyment. Emotional engagement is a powerful motivator because it encourages children to invest effort in understanding and responding to texts (Gambrell, 2011). 2. Shared Experiences

How Can I Foster Reading Motivation and Engagement Through Intentional Read-Alouds?

The read-aloud has long been recognised as an evidence-based practice which supports and encourages reader motivation and engagement. It can be used intentionally and conscientiously by teachers to nurture reading motivation and engagement across all ages and stages (Gooch & Lambrith, 2011; Ness, 2023). To achieve this, it is important that teachers recognise the variety of factors impacting reader motivation and are equipped with strategies and engaging activities to support the development and sustainment of reading motivation and engagement throughout read-aloud experiences.

Key Practices for Fostering Reader Motivation and Engagement Through Intentional Read- Alouds 1. Meaningful Text Selection

Selecting texts that resonate with children’s interests, identities and lived experiences is central to fostering reading motivation. Research consistently shows that when texts feel relevant and meaningful, children are more inclined to participate actively and to invest cognitive effort in making sense of what they hear (Gambrell, 2011). Relevance strengthens personal connection – one of the most powerful motivational drivers – because it allows children to recognise aspects of themselves, their communities and their cultural backgrounds within the text (Bishop, 1990; LadsonBillings, 1995). Such connections enhance engagement during the read-aloud and support deeper comprehension, as children draw on prior knowledge and emotional associations to understand the narrative or information (Duke & Roberts, 2010).

Meaningful read-aloud experiences therefore depend on intentional and informed text selection.

Teachers play a pivotal role in choosing books that align with children’s evolving interests, reflect diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and connect with ongoing curricular learning. 3. Offering a Variety of Texts

Providing children with access to a rich variety of texts is essential for cultivating both reading motivation and reading development. A diverse textual diet exposes learners to multiple voices, genres, structures and linguistic experiences, broadening their understanding of how texts work and what reading can offer.

As the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE, 2020) notes, ‘a range and breadth of texts allows children to hear and appreciate a wide range of voices and writing styles, investigating how language can be used for a variety of different purposes and audiences and to inspire them to read for purpose and pleasure’ (p. 4).

Intentional read-alouds provide an ideal platform for offering this breadth because they enable teachers to introduce complex, conceptually rich or linguistically sophisticated texts that children may not yet be able to read independently. Research demonstrates that exposure to a wide range of genres through read-alouds – including nonfiction, poetry, digital texts and multimodal formats – supports vocabulary development, background knowledge, comprehension and genre awareness (Duke & Roberts, 2010; Lennox, 2013). Moreover, presenting children with a broad variety of texts helps counter the well-documented tendency of early childhood and primary classrooms to rely heavily on narrative fiction, often at the expense of nonfiction and informational texts (Conradi Smith et al., 2022; La Croix et al., 2023).

Varied and carefully selected texts also play a motivational role. When children encounter texts that surprise them, challenge them or reflect unfamiliar formats – such as graphic novels, wordless picturebooks, magazines or multilingual texts – the novelty and relevance can significantly increase curiosity and engagement (Guthrie, 2004; Ness, 2023). A diverse reading environment signals that reading is not a narrow activity but an expansive one, capable of meeting a wide range of interests, identities and needs.

For these reasons, variety in text selection is not a superficial enhancement but an essential component of intentional read-aloud practice.

Things to try: Commit to reading diverse literature. Include texts that reflect a wide range of cultures, voices, identities and experiences to provide windows, mirrors and sliding glass doors (Bishop, 1990; Scorer, 2025).

Select appropriately challenging texts. Choose books that extend children’s language and thinking, including texts above most children’s independent reading level (Beck & McKeown, 2001; Lennox, 2013).

Read a variety of genres and text types. Incorporate nonfiction, poetry, magazines, comics, graphic novels, informational texts and texts in multiple languages (Duke, 2000; CLPE, 2020).

Make texts visible and accessible throughout the school. Place engaging books in hallways, shared spaces and classroom corners to encourage spontaneous read-aloud opportunities and text browsing.

Host Book Tastings or Book Buffets. Use book sampling events to introduce children to a wide range of genres and authors and to support informed choice and interest-driven reading.
