STAYING COOL: MANAGING HEAT-RELATED ILLNESS IN THE WORKPLACE

Every year, numerous workers suffer from heat-related illnesses, a prevalent issue especially during the intense Florida summers. The risks are often exacerbated by workers avoiding breaks out of fear of job repercussions, leading to severe health consequences.

Understanding Heat-Related Illnesses

Heat-related illnesses encompass a range of conditions, with heat stroke being the most severe, albeit less common. Immediate medical attention is required for heat stroke, making it crucial to recognize its symptoms early on. However, most cases of heat exhaustion or milder forms of heat-related illnesses can be managed effectively on-site, without the need for emergency medical intervention.

Preventive Measures and Workplace Safety

Employers and employees can take several proactive steps to mitigate the risk of heat-related illnesses:

1. Hydration: Begin hydrating the night before a shift, with 1-2 glasses of water before bed, and continue drinking water throughout the workday. It’s recommended to consume at least 8 oz. of water every 20-30 minutes, adjusting intake based on the intensity of the work and environmental conditions.

2. Access to Water: Ensure that cool or cold drinking water is readily accessible at the workplace.

3. Gatorade and Sports Drinks: While beneficial during lunch or breaks for replenishing electrolytes, Gatorade should not replace water as the primary source of hydration

4. Regular Breaks: Adopt the practice of taking short breaks in the shade or a cool area to allow the body to recover. Employers should encourage this practice without penalty, promoting a culture of safety and health.

5. OSHA’s Guidance: Following OSHA’s “REST, WATER, SHADE” program can be instrumental in preventing heatrelated issues. It empowers workers to take necessary breaks for hydration and cooling down without fear of repercussions.

6. Monitoring Colleagues: Be vigilant about the condition of your co-workers. If someone appears overheated or sluggish, encourage them to take a break and cool down.

MEASURE your performance on key components. STRENGTHEN and expand best practices. BUILD your safety culture.

ABC’s STEP Safety Management System provides members the framework to measure, strengthen and build industry-leading safety programs. Participating in STEP is at no cost to members. For more information, email safety@abccf.org.

Empowering Workers

Creating an environment where workers feel empowered to take care of their health without fear of losing their jobs is critical. Employers must educate their teams on the signs of heat-related illnesses and the importance of preventive measures. By fostering a supportive and safety-first workplace culture, companies can not only enhance worker welfare but also improve productivity and reduce the incidence of heatrelated health issues.

This comprehensive approach ensures that as temperatures rise, both productivity and safety are maintained, protecting workers from the severe impacts of the heat.
