Three uppingham at Hurlingham Observer

ast Saturday afternoon, the British Embassy Cricket XI managed to reclaim the venerable “Bone of Contention” Trophy after an hiatus of five years, much to the satisfaction of H.B.M.’s Ambassador to Argentina, John Freeman and his charming wife Corinna, plus the usual sprinkling of bonnie Embassy wives and kinder.

Finally, Ambassador Freeman thanked the locals for their generous hospitality and mentioned that he was happy to be taking the famous “Bone” back to its proper place!

Hatt trick For this they were largely indebted to a splendidly aggressive innings from young Sam Hatt, an English teacher from the renowned public school of Uppingham, Rutland, who smote 32 runs, undefeated, in quick time; he was aided and abetted by certain other former scholars from the same institution, who were out in force that afternoon. Another, by the name of Piers (Plowman?), struck 25 polished runs, undefeated, as well. Final victory was achieved for the loss of eight wickets. Conclusive evidence of “One Uppingham” if ever there was one... or even three!!! Locals adrift, and all at sea. The Hurlinghan XI took first lease of the excellent wicket provided for the occasion and could only amass 107 runs for 7 wickets of their allotted 25 overs, Brian Davies shining with 22 notches. Opening Embassy bowlers Woodman and Wood, in particular, wrought havoc amongst the early local batsmen, and the remainder found the gointough, except for Nigel Worsnop, who compiled a useful 18 runs, not out.
