The other day I bumped into a legal colleague of mine in a bar in Palma, and we ended up, after a few drinks, coming to the conclusion that we are very fortunate to live in Mallorca!
El otro día coincidí con un compañero abogado en un bar de Palma y llegamos a la conclusión, tras tomar algo juntos, que es una suerte vivir en Mallorca.
For us, as lawyers who on a daily basis are dealing directly with people connected with property transactions (purchasers, sellers, estate agents), we realized that in spite of the present economical situation, Mallorca continues to be a very good investment option, mainly thanks to the German, British, Swedish and Russian buyers, (in that order) that for them offers security, confidence, stability and a well developed infrastructure that simplifies the purchase and sales process.
Para nosotros, cómo abogados que tratamos a diario con personas que trabajan en el mercado inmobiliario (compradores, vendedores, agencias inmobiliarias), nos dimos cuenta que a pesar de la situación económica actual, Mallorca sigue siendo una muy buena opción gracias en gran parte al comprador alemán, británico, escandinavo y ruso (en ese orden), ya que para ellos Mallorca ofrece seguridad, confianza, estabilidad y fantásticas comunicaciones que facilitan la compra y venta.
On the island, the opportunities or ‘bargains’ appear to already have been sold leaving as such just a few high value properties at low prices. Mallorca is a guarantee for the European investor, with almost nothing in common with mainland Spain. Although it is true that the Spanish situation remains challenging, it is also true that more and more central European investors choose to invest in Mallorca which is surely proof of the security in property investments thanks to the still low interest rate and the reduction over the past few years in prices. Experts now believe that we have reached the bottom of the ladder and that we will start to see increases in prices towards the middle to end of 2011.
En Mallorca, las oportunidades o gangas parece que ya se han vendido dejando sólo pocos inmuebles de alto standing a bajos precios. Mallorca es una garantía para el inversor europeo y muy poco tiene que ver con el resto de España. Si bien es cierto que la coyuntura española no es buena, no deja de ser cierto que cada vez más el mercado centroeuropeo quiere invertir en Mallorca como muestra de seguridad para sus inversiones inmobiliarias gracias a unos tipos de interés aun bajos y a la bajada de precios. Los expertos creen que hemos tocado fondo y que empezaremos a ver una subida de precios a finales de 2011.
Während der letzten Weinachtsfeiertagen, traf ich einen Kollegen auf ein Glas in einer Bar in Palma und am Ende der Unterhaltung fanden wir, dass wir glücklich waren auf Mallorca zu leben. Als Rechtsanwälte die täglich mit Personen aus der immobilienbranche (Käufer, Verkäufer, Makler) zu tun haben, wurde uns klar, dass trotz der jetzigen finanziellen Krise, Mallorca immer noch eine der besten Optionen für Käufer aus Deutschland, Grossbritanien, Skandinavien und Russland (in dieser exakten Reihenfolge) ist. Mallorca bietet, nach wie vor, Sicherheit, Vertrauen, Stabilität und beste Kommunikationsmöglichtkeiten, Faktoren die den Kauf attraktiv machen. Zur Zeit scheinen die Immobilien„Schnäppchen“ alle verkauft worden zu sein. Es bleiben nur noch wenige Objekte der höheren Klasse die noch günstig zu kaufen sind. Der europäische Investor weisst, dass Mallorca, die sich finanziell anders als der Rest Spaniens verhält, eine Garantie darstellt. Obgleich die Konjunktur in Spanien im Moment ungünstig ist, steigt die Tendenz des Mitteleuropäischenmarktes, auf Mallorca zu investieren, dank der niedrigen Bankzinsen und des Preisabstiegs der Immobilien. Ich glaube wir haben jetzt den Tiefstand erreicht, und dass im Immobilienmarkt, Ende 2011 eine positive Änderung stattfinden wird. Die vorgesehene Zunahme desTourismus bestätigt den Aufschwung des europäischen Tourismus auf Mallorca (nicht zuletzt durch die kritische Situation anderer Urlaubsziele, wie z.B. Ägypten). Dies wird sich entsprechend auf den „Zweiter Residenz“-Markt positiv auswirken.
Another factor is the predicted growth in tourism this year for the island (caused also by the critical situation in other tourist destinations such as Egypt) which will create a surge in the activity relating to second-home purchases in Mallorca.

Otro factor a tener en cuenta es el incremento en el sector turístico previsto este año en la isla (motivado también por la situación crítica de otros destinos turísticos cómo Egipto) que a su vez dará pie a un incremento en la actividad relacionada a compras de turismo residencial en Mallorca.

Mallorca has five of Spain's 139 Michelin stars this year, and every gourmet worth their salt has talked about them. Like, why no star for Thomas Kahl's exceptional cuisine at Es Fum? It's twice been voted the island's best restaurant by abcMallorca readers. Some will have vowed to try one-star Zaranda (which relocated to Hilton Sa Torre - with entire kitchen brigade - from its Madrid premises); some have expressed surprise at the star for Gadus in Cala d'Or (closed and with no re-opening date, at time of writing). There's often confusion about Michelin stars. Are they awarded for the chef? Or restaurant? A Michelin spokeswoman says: “They're based solely on the quality of the cuisine served and don't specifically relate to

Por ejemplo se preguntan por qué la cocina excepcional de Thomas Kahl no se ha llevado ninguna estrella; su restaurante se ha votado el mejor de la isla dos veces en la encuesta anual de abcMallorca. Otros se proponen visitar Zaranda, ganador de una estrella (restaurante que se trasladó al Hilton Sa Torre – con todo su equipo de cocinadesde su anterior ubicación en Madrid); y otros han expresado su asombro al enterarse de la estrella concedida a Gadus en Cala d’Or (restaurante cerrado y sin fecha de reapertura a fecha de publicación). Las estrellas Michelin suelen causar bastante confusión. ¿Se conceden al cocinero o al restaurante? Una representante de Michelin dice: “Las basamos únicamente en la calidad de la cocina y no tienen relación directa con el local o el chef.” Sorprendentemente, la decoración del restaurante no forma parte del criterio de inspección: “No todos los restaurantes Michelin son formales con mesas bien vestidas, pero las estrellas no suelen asociarse con establecimientos poco elegantes. Los chefs suelen esforzarse

Bereits zweimal wurde das Restaurant von den abcMallorca-Lesern zum besten Lokal Mallorcas gewählt. Viele hätten wohl auch gerne einen Stern für das Zaranda gesehen (ein Restaurant, das mitsamt der Kücheneinrichtung im vergangenen Jahr von Madrid ins Hilton Sa Torre zog). Andere wunderten sich, dass es einen Stern fürs Gadus in Cala d´Or gab (obwohl es bereits vor der Auszeichnung seine Türen schloss – ohne Termin zur Neueröffnung). IBezüglich der Michelin Sterne herrscht allgemeine Verunsicherung. Werden die Dinger nun dem Küchenchef verliehen? Oder dem Restaurant? Ein Michelin-Sprecher erklärt: “Sie gelten einzig und allein der Qualität der servierten Speisen und sind weder an das Lokal noch den Küchenchef gebunden.” Überraschenderweise ist auch die Inneinrichtung des Restaurants kein Kriterium der Michelin-Prüfer: “Nicht alle unserer Sterne-Restaurants servieren auf strahlend weißen Leinen-Tischdecken, andererseits wird man in ihnen wohl auch keine dreckverkrusteten Tische finden. Küchenchefs neigen allerdings häufig dazu, allzu großen Wert auf das Tischgedeck zu legen, anstatt sich auf die Zubereitung der Speisen zu konzentrieren.” Immer öfter zeichnet Michelin unkonventionelle Restaurants mit einem Stern aus, wie beispielsweise das Nobu in London vielleicht deshalb, weil auch die MichelinPrüfer zusehends jünger werden. Doch worauf genau achten die? “Auf das Besondere, die Ausgewogenheit und den innovativen Charakter des Menüs; auf die Qualität der verarbeitenden Produkte; auf das technische Know-How und das Fingerspitzengefühl bei der Zubereitung; auf

either the establishment or the chef.” Surprisingly, restaurant décor is not part of the inspection criteria: “Not all Michelinstarred restaurants are formal with linenclad tables, but stars aren't usually associated with scruffy establishments. Chefs tend to spend too much on tableware, when they should be concentrating on the food.” Michelin is awarding stars to an increasing number of buzzy, informal restaurants, such as London's Nobu probably because they now have a team of younger inspectors. They look for: “Interest, balance and innovation of the menu; quality of products used; technical skill and flair in preparation; clarity of flavours; compatibility of ingredients, consistency of culinary standards; quality of the wine list, and value for money offered.” They make as many visits deemed necessary to ensure consistency - “a byword for Michelin.” Well, Es Fum seems to meet all those criteria. Maybe they have yet to visit? With the Internet offering myriad restaurant reviews and many people having a greater knowledge and interest in food, do these stars still matter, 110 years after the guide was first published? They do to ambitious chefs - sometimes to the point of obsession. In 2003, Bernard Loiseau - whose cuisine at small French town restaurant Côte d'Or had garnered three Michelin stars annually since 1991 - committed suicide. Upset by a review in the Gault Millau guide, his increasing anxiety about the possible loss of even one of the three Michelin stars tragically overwhelmed him. Claudio Marini, restaurant manager at onestar Tristán in Puerto Portals, finds the pressure positive: “It's a healthy pressure that, as professionals, we need. Like a professional footballer, who knows that he has to win every game in order to win the league or the cup, we need to be perfect every night to be acknowledged by our guests and the various guides.” At Reads, Marc Fosh became Spain's first British chef whose cuisine won a star: “I can honestly say I enjoyed the pressure for the most part, as it motivated me to constantly push myself forward. Achieving Michelin stars is a rush for any chef, as it puts you into a very select group of very talented people.” This month, Fosh opens Misa Braseria and Bar: “It's very different from both Simply Fosh and Tasca - a Mediterranean brasserie, and something totally new for Palma.” He doesn't deny that he'd like to win another star: “When I opened Simply Fosh I was a little concerned about the connotation that

Buscan: “Una carta interesante, equilibrada e innovadora; materia prima de calidad; habilidades técnicas y esmero en la preparación; sabores claros; ingredientes compatibles, niveles culinarios estables; una carta de vinos de calidad y una buena relación calidad-precio. ” Visitan un restaurante las veces que crean necesarias para asegurarse de una buena continuidad - “un sinónimo de Michelin.” Y bien, Es Fum parece cumplir con todos esos requisitos. ¿O es que todavía no lo han visitado? ¿Siguen importando tanto estas estrellas, cuando ya hace 110 años que se publica la guía y teniendo en cuenta la gran cantidad de críticas de restaurante que podemos encontrar en Internet y el hecho de que hoy en día la gente sabe mucho más sobre gastronomía? A los cocineros ambiciosos está claro que sí que les importan – hasta a veces se convierte en una obsesión. En 2003, Bernard Loiseau – ganador de tres estrellas Michelin cada año desde 1991 por su cocina en el pequeño restaurante provincial Côte d'Or en Francia– se suicidó. Una crítica en la guía Gault Millau le había disgustado y la ansiedad que sentía por perder una de sus tres estrellas pudo con él y le llevó a la tragedia. Como un jugador de fútbol profesional que sabe que tiene que ganar cada partido para poder hacerse con la liga o la copa, nosotros tenemos que estar perfectos cada noche para que nos lo reconozcan nuestros clientes y las guías. ” En Reads, Marc Fosh se convirtió en el primer cocinero británico de España en recibir una estrella: “Sinceramente puedo decir que me gustaba la presión, me motivaba para seguir adelante. Conseguir una estrella Michelin es un gran acontecimiento para cualquier chef, entras dentro de un grupo muy selecto de personas con muchísimo talento. ” Este mes, Fosh abre Misa Braseria & Bar: “Es totalmente diferente a Simply Fosh y Tasca – una ‘brasserie’ mediterránea, algo totalmente novedoso para Palma.” No niega que le gustaría volver a ganar una estrella:

Tja, das Es Fum scheint alle diese Kriterien zu erfüllen. Vielleicht haben die Michelin-Prüfer es einfach noch nicht dorthin geschafft. Sind die Michelin-Sterne 110 Jahre nach ihrer erstmaligen Veröffentlichung im gleichnamigen Restaurantführer überhaupt noch zeitgemäß? Schließlich findet man heutzutage nicht nur im Internet unzählige Restaurant-Kritike, sondern auch immer mehr Menschen, die sich in ihren jeweiligen Gastroszenen bestens auskennen? Für ambitionierte Küchenchef sind die Sterne natürlich zweifellos von großer Bedeutung – und das oftmals bis zur Besessenheit. Gutes Beispiel hierfür ist die Geschichte von Bernard Loiseau. Seine Küche in dem kleinen französischen Stadtrestaurant Cote dÓr wurde seit 1991 mit gleich drei MichelinSternen ausgezeichnet. 2003 nahm er sich das Leben, nachdem er im Gault MilleauRestaurant-Führer eine schlechte Kritik verpasst bekam und anschließend aus Furcht, aus diesem Grund womöglich einen seiner Michelin-Sterne einzubüßen, verzweifelte. Claudio Marini, Restaurant-Manager im EinSterne-Restaurant Tristán in Puerto Portals empfindet den Druck dagegen als positiv. “Es ist eine gesunde Art von Druck, die wir als Profis brauchen. Ebenso wie ein ProfiFußballer, der weiß, dass er gewinnen muss, um die Liga oder einen Cup zu gewinnen, müssen auch wir jeden Abend eine perfekte Leistung erbringen, um von unseren Gästen und den verschiedenen Restaurant-Kritikern anerkannt zu werden.” Im Read´s wurde Marc Fosh als erster Brite in Spanien mit einem Michelin-Stern ausgezeichnet. “Ich kann wirklich sagen, dass ich den Druck gerne habe und ihn als Motivation verstehe, meine Arbeit kontinuierlich voran zu treiben. Michelin Sterne zu sammeln ist ein Anreiz für jeden Küchenchef, da er dir den Zugang zu einem sehr engen Kreis talentierter Menschen verschafft.” Diesen Monat eröffnet Fosh Misa Braseria und Bar: “Dieses Lokal unterscheidet sich sowohl von Simply Fosh als auch von Tasca. Es ist ein mediterranes Bistro und etwas ganz Neues in Palma.” Dass er einen weiteren Michelin-Stern möchte, verneint er nicht. “Als ich Simply Fosh eröffnete, war ich

Over the past two years the restaurant has developed and we are now very close to the level needed. It remains to be seen if Michelin in Spain will follow the lead set by the USA and other countries, where slightly more casual restaurants are also being awarded with stars.” According to Tristán's Marini: “The star itself doesn't influence the selling price directly but you have to work with the best ingredients and well-qualified staff and that does make the price higher. A Michelin star justifies that to your clients.” And on the previous loss of one of Tristán's former two stars? “It didn't make a remarkable difference to the restaurant's popularity, but it did to our ambition,” Marini says. “It means our entire team is working harder to give our guests a unique, memorable time at Tristán.” He's confident of regaining the second star. Plat d'Or lost its star after adapting to new market demands: “Due to a re-branding from 'The Luxury Collection' to 'Sheraton', a

“Cuando abrí Simply Fosh me preocupaba el hecho de que los restaurantes Michelin suelen considerarse demasiado caros y por eso simplificamos las cosas. Durante los últimos dos años el restaurante se ha desarrollado y ahora estamos muy cerca del nivel que se necesita. Aún está por ver si Michelin España seguirá el ejemplo de los Estados Unidos y otros países donde ya se galardonan a restaurantes menos formales. Según Marini de Tristán: “La estrella no influye directamente en los precios – pero tienes que trabajar con los mejores ingredientes y una plantilla cualificada y eso sí hace que suban los costes. Una estrella Michelin justifica esos precios más elevados. ¿Y qué dice Marini sobre el hecho de que Tristán ha pasado de tener dos estrellas (hace dos años) a tener sólo una? “No se ha notado demasiado en cuanto a la popularidad del restaurante, pero si ha influido en nuestra ambición,” dice. “Todos estamos trabajando más que nunca para que nuestros clientes disfruten de una velada única y memorable en Tristán. ’’ Está

Da wir aber ausschließlich mit den besten Zutaten und dem fähigsten Personal arbeiten, führt das automatisch auch zu höheren Preisen. Ein Michelin Stern rechtfertigt diesen Preis jedoch gegenüber den Gästen.” Und wie beurteilt er den Verlust von einem der beiden früheren Sterne im Tristán? “Der Beliebtheit des Restaurant hat das keinen Abbruch getan, für unseren Ehrgeiz bedeutete der Verlust jedoch viel”, sagt

Michelin dice que elige los establecimientos a visitar “tras haber sido contactados por el propietario, miembros del público, agencias de publicidad, la prensa, o tras leer buenas críticas sobre la cocina.” Vamos Michelin. Visita Es Fum, Simply Fosh y Restaurante Jardin (la cocinera Macarena de Castro sería una entre pocas – sólo son 10 las mujeres españolas que han ganado estrellas Michelin). Plat d'Or verlor seinen Stern nachdem das Restaurant sich einem neuen Kundenmarkt zuwandte: “Durch den Markenwechsel von “The Luxury Collection” zu “Sheration” verlor der Michelin-Stern für unser gastronomisches Angebot im mittleren Preissegment, den kürzeren Essenszeiten und dem entspannenderen, informelleren Restaurantkonzept an Bedeutung”, sagt Christine Crespo, Pressesprecherin für Starwood Hotels & Resorts Mallorca. Über die Gründe, warum Es Fum keinen Michelin-Stern trägt, will Crespo nicht spekulieren. “Wir hoffen, dass Michelin die Küche von Thomas Kahl über kurz oder lang anerkennt. Seine Kreationen sind bei unseren Gästen sehr beliebt – und das ist, was für uns zählt.” Restaurants selbst können sich nicht um einen Stern bewerben, aber sie können Informationen über ihr gastronomisches Angebot zu den Herausgebern des Michelin-Restaurantführers schicken. Letzendlich entscheidend, ob ein Restaurant überhaupt in die Auswahl kommt, ist nach Aussage von Michelin “der Kontakt mit dem Besitzer, die Meinung von Gästen, PR-Agenturen, der Medien oder das, was man über die Küche dort liest”. Also los, Michelin. Besuch´ doch einmal Es Fum, Simply Fosh und Restaurante Jardín (Chefköchin Macarena de Castro würde in erlesene Gesellschaft geraten – nur zehn Frauen in Spanien wurden für ihre Küche von Michelin mit einem Stern ausgezeichnet).
