Cove Vision Statement

14

Dear Cove Family and Friends: How proud I am of all that was accomplished at The Cove School during the 2011-12 school year. How grateful I am to a community who comes together each year to provide a quality education for students with complex learning disabilities. Since 1947, Cove has provided a unique learning environment where students who cannot succeed in other environments are able to thrive and excel. Last year, through the generosity of our donors, Cove was able to expand its program to include innovative initiatives like a new 1:1 laptop program for all of our high school students. We expanded the Transition Program to include new specialists who provided individualized internships within the community for our students, and we developed new educational opportunities for our parents through our Parent Education Series and support groups. Cove is committed to our students and families who are here today, and Cove, more than ever, is committed to a successful tomorrow. Inside the pages that follow, you will see the names of the donors who have so generously given to our school. You will see the faces of those who have generously given of their time. And finally, you will feel the impact that has been made through the lives of our students who are eager to share their stories, their successes, and their goals for a future that was built on the foundation of a strong Cove education. The demand for quality education to serve a growing population of students with complex disabilities is greater than ever. Education funding in Illinois was and still is at a critical low, greatly impacting the ability of schools to support the extensive costs of supporting those with significant needs. Our students need more; our families need A Cove. As we look to the past with much gratitude for all you have done, we also look to the future for all that we know is still needed. Your contributions allow us to do the work we need to do for our students today, and to ensure the financial stability for the students to come. It is a privilege and honor to present our 2011-12 Annual Report to all of you, our Cove Community. With much gratitude,

Sally L. Sover, Ed.D. Executive Director

Senior Graduation 2012 B e l i e Speech ve Jimmy Kozlov

My name is Jimmy Kozlov and I would like to thank the entire staff at The Cove School, but there are a few special people who made a very large impact on me in my years at Cove. Mr. Lawrence was my first teacher at The Cove School in my first year of junior high. He was very nice to me and made me feel at home. Even after I graduated from his class, we would occasionally talk about physical science and how things work. Mr. Lawrence always encouraged me to do my best. Coach Battista was always my gym teacher. Everyday in gym, Coach Battista pushed me to keep on running and going in sports, even after I thought I had pushed past my 100 percent threshold. By doing this, I believe coach made me a stronger and more disciplined person both mentally and physically. Mrs. Gray is another incredible person that helped me with my speech and articulation. Before going to Mrs. Gray, I literally did not know how to carry on a conversation for more than 30 seconds. I did not really know what I should do when having a conversation. I would

2

•3•

not make eye contact, and I would jump from one subject to another every 30 seconds. With just about an hour a week for one year, I can now carry on a 1-hour conversation and I have the vocabulary of a 30-year-old. The last person I want to include in my speech is Mr. Norwell. Before I met Mr. Norwell, I was getting written up everyday, and did not give a care about school. However, when Mr. Norwell became my case manager and math teacher, he developed behavior plans, and other tools to help me. With Mr. Norwell’s help, I jumped from pre-algebra all the way into Geometry. Mr. Norwell always went beyond the call of duty to help me succeed, and I am very grateful for it. Thanks to these people, I graduated with excellent grades in all general education classes. I hope to attend Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois to study Criminal Justice. In conclusion, Cove is an amazing place with the best staff to help you reach any type of goal. I very strongly believe that miracles do happen here everyday.

Honorary Lifetime Trustees The designation of Honorary Lifetime Trustee was initiated by the Board of Trustees of The Cove School in 2009 to distinguish former Trustees who have served in an officer-level capacity and whose contribution to Cove warrants such extraordinary recognition. In June 2009, Cove honored Edward Finnegan as the first Honorary Lifetime Trustee. In June 2012, Carey Cooper and Edward Weil were additionally recognized. Through their involvement on the board, these leaders inspired a shared vision for the future of The Cove School.

Carey Cooper joined the Board of Trustees in 2004- 2005 and quickly rose to co-chair Cove’s Milestones Campaign with Ed Weil. Following his leadership on the capital campaign, Carey served as Board President from 2010-2012. He and his wife Cheryl have three children; their youngest, Douglas, graduated from Cove in 2011. Carey describes The Cove School as, “a beacon of light for families with children with moderate to severe learning challenges.” He added, “Cove was fantastic for Doug and our family. It provided Doug with a safe learning environment and allowed him to blossom socially. We will always be grateful to Cove. Although I am no longer President, I intend to stay involved for many years to come.”

Edward Finnegan joined the Board in 1989, and became President in 2001, serving until 2009. He led the board during the Milestones Campaign, which greatly renovated and expanded the school and its program. Recruiting Dr. Sally Sover as Executive Director is the accomplishment for which Ed is most proud, citing her “remarkable vision, energy and leadership.” On a personal level, Ed and his wife, Carol, said that at Cove they “found people that truly ‘got it’ as it relates to Tim.” Ed adds, “Cove also was transformative for Carol and me. Both of us developed a real passion for Cove’s mission and formed many lifelong friendships with members of the Cove community. The Finnegans will always find a way to stay plugged in at Cove. We feel an incredible debt of gratitude.”

Edward Weil joined the Board of Trustees after attending a Cove Benefit with his wife, Karen, in February 2003. Before co-chairing the Milestones Campaign with Carey Cooper, Ed worked on a strategic plan which decided to strengthen the high school, and ultimately to raise the funds to build a new school and meaningful cash reserve. After the campaign, Ed continued to help the school raise funds, serving as development committee chair for five years. The Weil’s son, Charlie discovered a love for theater during his time at Cove. Currently, Charlie is in his senior year at Highland Park High School. He is in the school play and gearing up to go on to college next year to pursue his passion for film and theatre. Ed describes Cove as “a haven for learning-challenged kids who are struggling in public school settings. It’s an inspirational, magical place – and a jewel in our community.” •8•

The Cove School Annual Benefit Attendance Over Period of Four Years

On the evening of March 3, 2012, a record crowd of 540 guests came together at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare to celebrate the students of The Cove School at “Soaring to New Heights,” Cove’s annual Benefit. Under the leadership of Co-Chairs Betsy Crosswhite and Lisa Flanagan, Auction Chair Maureen Klatt, Underwriting Chair Cynthia Mondi, and a hardworking committee, the event proved to be a fun and meaningful night for Cove. The evening raised a phenomenal net total of $402,000 to benefit Cove students with learning disabilities. Cove parent and volunteer, Carol Finnegan, was recognized with the 2012 Prism Award for her inspirational leadership, outstanding commitment, and transformational impact at the school. Cove’s Corporate Sponsorship program continued to grow for the third year in a row. Many sponsors attended the event, including a table from Astellas USA Foundation, Danaco Solutions, Goldman Sachs, Mesirow Financial, and additional guests from American Chemet Corporation, BMO Harris Bank, and HCI Equity Partners. The silent auction and paddle raise also broke records, raising over $62,000 and $107,000 respectively. 8

Over the years, guests at the Benefit have been asked to raise their paddles in support of a special project or for general operating support. The paddle raise is an opportunity for everyone at the event to participate at varying levels. Despite the challenging economic times, the dollars raised through the paddle rasise have nearly doubled over the last four years.

Cove Vision Statement The Cove School, a private K–12 day school, is a national leader in educating children with learning disabilities. Cove was founded by pioneers in the field of learning disabilities in 1947. Cove provides children from diverse backgrounds with an individual

educational experience in a safe and respectful environment. Cove’s dual purpose is to provide students with customized learning strategies to complete an academic curriculum and to facilitate the development of their social, emotional and •14•

self-advocacy skills. Cove’s approach to learning creates an environment for students to build the self-confidence necessary to make a successful transition to their community schools, or to make post-secondary choices.
