D e a r C o v e Fa m i l y a n d Fr i e n d s : Believe. Achieve. Inspire. As I think about the extraordinary Cove Community and the accomplishments of the 2009-10 school year, I can’t help but reflect on the many ways in which these words have come to life through the lives of the many who believe in our school. Inside this Annual Report, you will see lists of those who believe in Cove and who believe that the gifts they provide serve a great purpose and need. You will read of a student who believes in himself because of the many ways in which Cove believed in him. You will celebrate the achievements we’ve shared and the many more that are to come thanks to your generosity and commitment to our mission. And you will be inspired by the significance of the difference you have made. The demand for quality education to serve a growing population of students with complex needs is greater than ever. Last year, and for the past 5 years, we have seen our enrolllment at the high school grow to its highest level in Cove’s history. We welcomed over 30 new families into our school and introduced new programs and technologies to serve their unique needs. Although we are in the midst of difficult economic times, your contributions and sacrifices remained strong, allowing us to achieve what others have not been able to do. As we look to the past with much gratitude for all you have done, we also look to the future for all that we know is still needed. As we embark on Year 2 of our Strategic Plan, it is with much urgency that we focus our efforts on providing the programs and staffing that are necessary for our students’ success while ensuring the financial stability of our school. Your contributions allow us to do the work we need to do that is critical for our students today and for those with learning disabilities in the future. It is a privilege and an honor to present our 2009-10 Annual Report to all of you, our Cove Community. Thank you for believing in our students and for helping us achieve and inspire others to do the same.

id you ever wonder why this school is called The Cove School? I have, so I looked it up. First, what is a cove? The dictionary definition of a cove is, 1. a small sheltered inlet. 2. a sheltered nook. 3. a recess in a mountain or cave. I’m going to use the first definition: a small sheltered inlet. So, how did The Cove School get its name? The Cove School got it’s name from it’s original location, a sleepy cove of Lake Michigan in Racine, Wisconsin. A sheltered inlet. A sheltered place is great - when there’s a big storm. It’s safe. In the three years that I have been here, I feel that The Cove School has been a cove for me. The teachers are always helpful. The happy and cheerful attitudes, of my peers and teachers, make the days flow smoothly. We try to solve problems, so that the water doesn’t become too rough. I’m very proud of my successes.
When I started in sixth grade, I was riding on rough waters. I have maneuvered successfully, through the rough waters, and now it’s calm and peaceful.
2
So, what is success? The American Heritage Dictionary defines success as: “the achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted”. My definition is trying and failing, then trying again until I get it right. Sometimes, it’s just -
putting out to the world - the best that I can do. Some of my successes at Cove are: I really know how to read a book, think about it, and understand what the author is trying to get across. I am a lot more confident. I know a lot more about who I am - the good, the bad, and the ugly, but honestly, there is a lot more good - than anything else. I also really want to thank my family for making the decision to send me to this amazing school. Dan Rather, a newsman, once said: “The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs, and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called “truth.” and Thomas Edison once said, “If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.” To my teachers and everyone who have worked with me through the years at Cove, thank you for helping me realize that I can learn, for pushing me, and for helping me see some of the “truths” about myself. I ‘ve had many successes here. I can’t wait to see what I’ll do next!

Achieve meg barnhart and susan milanak cove parents and benefit co-chairs The Cove School’s Annual Benefit, The Art of Giving, was held on Saturday, February 20, 2010. Co-Chairs and Cove parents Meg Barnhart, and Susan Milanak, led an incredible effort which resulted in a successful fundraising and friend-raising night for Cove.
M
eg and Susan decided to chair the 2010 Cove Benefit together as a way to give back to the school for everything that Cove has done for their children and families. “I don’t know that we can ever really repay Cove – the teachers and staff – for what the school has done for us or for Jack, but chairing the 2010 Benefit was one small way to give back,” said Susan. Meg added, “We witnessed an immediate transformation in our son Doug when he started at Cove five years ago. While we were fortunate to have an excellent school district, Doug’s learning challenges were so extreme that he was only able to attend one or two classes with other students each day making it difficult for him to fully integrate into the school. Seeing Doug blossom at Cove, I experienced, first hand, what that meant.” Early in the planning process, Meg and Susan identified three ambitious goals for the event. The first was to increase the event’s attendance from 400 to 500 guests. The second goal was to help cover the event’s expenses by launching a corporate underwriting campaign. Finally, they wanted to broaden Cove’s reach into the greater community by building bridges to local businesses, artisans, and other nonprofit organizations. Remarkably, they accomplished all three goals. The event drew over 500 guests and raised a
record of $320,000, including over $35,000 in corporate underwriting support. Along with Auction Co-Chairs Betsy Crosswhite and Nydia Searle, Basket Chairs Carol Finnegan and Patty Huffman, as well as their hard working committee, the team was able to use the auction as a vehicle to reach out to the community. Most notably, local mosaic artist, Bernadette Elenteny worked with the Junior High Classes in creating original pieces of art. For both Meg and Susan, their children were the main inspiration for their desire to achieve. “Doug inspires me every day. He has an amazing ability to connect to people and I find him one of the most courageous people I know,” said Meg. Likewise, Susan credits Jack for her inspiration. “I watch Jack work hard at almost everything he does. I remember the first time Jack was in the Cove Variety Show, telling jokes. I thought, ‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ But he went on stage with no fear and he did great. His determination to achieve is inspiring.” For Susan and Meg, the financial success of the benefit was only part of the story. Both women agreed that the most important thing they wanted to achieve was a sense of warmth and community. Meg said, “I am proud that throughout the process we didn’t focus on the bottom line, but rather stayed committed to the joy of being together, creating an evening that everyone would enjoy and an event that represented the beauty of our children.”

Inspire chris grene s o c i a l w o r k e r at c o v e
W
hile there is no formula for giving or receiving inspiration, it is something easily recognized when we are in its presence. It can lift us to imagine possibilities previously unseen, remind us of what is most important in life, and restore our faith in what is highest and best in human nature. In 1947 The Cove School was born of the inspired thoughts and actions of Dr. Albert Strauss and Dr. Laura Rogan. These two individuals believed deeply in the importance of learning and the potential of each child to develop and grow within their own time given the appropriate accommodations and supports. These pioneers understood that conventional teaching methods would not reach every child. They pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible at the time, and they envisioned and established a learning environment in which discouraged children and their families could begin to trust and hope in the future.
I believe that the same energy and spirit of inspiration can be felt today within the walls of The Cove School.
8
The results? Like-minded administrators, staff, and parents collaborated to understand and support the potential of each child who participated in their community of committed learners. A high level of dedication and belief in their abilities inspired the students to take risks in the service of new learning and to achieve that
which was previously thought to be impossible. Students’ pride in their accomplishments motivated them to set new goals for themselves and further inspired the adults who were guiding the process. I believe that the same energy and spirit of inspiration can be felt today within the walls of The Cove School. It is still a community that seeks to provide opportunities for all children to have a sense of belonging and value. Our students belong to teams, participate in plays, act as student council representatives, join in community service projects and have friends with whom they connect outside of school. Their victories continue to inspire the adults who have the privilege of working with them. What is that feeling that visitors describe when they enter Cove’s building? I believe it is the experience of a warm and nurturing environment where students come first and adults collaborate to bring forth the endless possibilities that they see in these students. There is a felt sense of hope and belief in that which is certainly there, if not yet fully developed. There is an invitation to belong to this community and play a part in one of the inspiring stories that have shaped many lives over the past sixty plus years.

Cove Vision Statement The Cove School, a private K–12 day school, is a national leader in educating children with learning disabilities. Cove was founded by pioneers in the field of learning disabilities in 1947. Cove provides children from diverse backgrounds with an individual educational experience in a safe and respectful environment. Cove’s dual purpose is to provide students with customized learning strategies to complete an academic curriculum and to facilitate the development of their social, emotional and self-advocacy skills. Cove’s approach to learning creates an environment for students to build the self-confidence necessary to make a successful transition to their community schools, or to make post-secondary choices.
