Dear Cove Family and Friends: What an amazing anniversary year! We are thrilled with all that we were able to accomplish this past year, and with all that was made possible by you, our incredible Cove Community.

Last year, Cove celebrated its 65th anniversary. Since 1947, The Cove School has provided a unique learning environment where students who cannot succeed in other environments are able to thrive and excel.

The Cove@65 Campaign gave us an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate our rich history and to remind us of all of what we must do to give our students what they need to reach their personal best. It allowed us to honor our pioneering founders, Dr. Laura Rogan and Dr. Alfred Strauss, who had a vision for a safe and welcoming school where all students with learning disabilities would thrive. It enabled us to collect valuable resources for the necessary enhancements to our program that would allow us to fulfill our mission.

The Cove@65 Campaign was a remarkable success thanks to YOU! The current financial hardships at the state and federal levels threaten our funding in education and are risks to the progress we are determined to make. Like our students and families, the dedicated team at Cove is driven to surpass any obstacles we face, and we are deeply grateful for the many ways in which our Cove Community has been there for us.

All of the gifts that were given to Cove are important to us. Each dollar counts and makes a significant difference.

As we look to the past with much gratitude for all the Cove Community has done, we also look to the future for all that we believe is needed for us to continue, together, to lead this journey for students with disabilities. Our students have complex needs and the challenges they face are great.

Cove@65 Campaign For 65 years, The Cove School has recognized the complex needs of students with learning disabilities. Students throughout the Chicagoland area continue to receive a highly individualized educational program, with intensive services, in a supportive social and emotional environment at Cove.

In the fall of 2012, The Cove School launched The Cove@65 Campaign, chaired by board members Dan Dickinson and Rob Flanagan to expand five key programs at the school: Health and Fitness, Technology, Transition and Placement Services, Financial Assistance, and Professional Development. The goal was $1.25 million.

The campaign concluded on June 30, 2013 with nearly $1.45 million raised.

In October 2013, a reception was held celebrating the achievements of the campaign and unveiling a renovated lobby and new donor wall. Cove student Diana Ferraro and Cove Class of 2013 graduate Aaron Thal spoke at that event. They thanked the donors for their generous support and spoke about the impact Cove has had on their lives.

“For the first time in my life I was able to go to school where doors were open to me. The teachers taught me in ways that made sense to me. When I had problems they worked with me.

I had so many resources available that learning wasn’t as frightening.

Cove gave me chances to be part of things that I would never try before.

Speaking here tonight in front of all of you was made possible because Cove taught me to believe in myself, see my abilities and believe that I was worth all the efforts.

A Look Back

The Cove School was the nation’s first school founded exclusively for the education of children with learning disabilities. And to this day, it remains one of the premier schools in the field.

Cove was founded in 1947 by Dr. Alfred A. Strauss, a child psychiatrist-neurologist, and his research assistant, Dr. Laura Lehtinen Rogan, a teacher and educational psychologist. The school’s name comes from its original location on the sleepy cove of Lake Michigan in Racine, Wisconsin. In 1950, Dr. Lehtinen Rogan opened the first Cove day school in Evanston, Illinois.

Sue Turner, Speech Language Pathologist and Reading Specialist began working at Cove when it was located in Evanston. “The building looked like a mansion, and because of that, it felt like walking into a home. Cove still feels like a home. That’s the piece of Cove that has never changed. The family and the community that Cove creates is where we impact students the most. Cove is where they can finally feel a part of something bigger. At Cove, they are accepted,” Mrs. Turner remarked.

Vivian Drexler, Cove’s Director of Student Transition Services, recalls having worked with Dr. Rogan. “She was the most gentle, soft spoken, intelligent, common sense, down-to-earth ‘little lady,’ who shared her logical and clear explanations for resolving problems. Her, ‘we can do it together’ spirit predominated.”

In 1973, The Cove School moved to Evanston and in 1986, the school moved again to the historic Skokie School building in

Winnetka, where it remained for the next 10 years.

Mrs. Turner remembers working with Dr. Rogan as well as Dr. Libby Noell and Patty Lister. “The passion they had was contagious. The wonderful collaboration that takes place between staff members at Cove is significant.”

On July 15, 1996, The Cove School moved to its current location at 350 Lee Road, Northbrook, Illinois, and in 2006 the school completed a major property expansion and renovation.

Amidst all of Cove’s moves, Mrs. Drexler is still connected to families that have long left Cove. “Hearing from students and parents is gratifying. The students have always been number one for me.”

She adds, “Establishing the Alumni Association has provided many former students to stay ‘Cove connected’.”

Marty Prujansky, longtime Cove English teacher, remembers a Cove graduation where a missing graduate suddenly burst through the door to join his classmates as the ceremony was coming to an end.

“The students always surprise me,” Prujansky noted.

“I am the one who is inspired by the students,” said Mrs. Turner.

“They overcome challenges every day. They come into school every day with a smile. They willingly come to my office where we attack their greatest challenge— reading, and they have a smile on their face. They truly inspire me with their courage.”

Young Professionals for Cove

YPC member Ian Goldberg remarked, “ Two major goals of YPC are to make people aware of all the great things Cove stands for as well as to encourage a future generation of new supporters and volunteers. You never know how someone hears about Cove and how that could change the life of a future student.” He added, “Part of the draw to my joining YPC was to interact with Cove students. It was great

to see students enjoying themselves and helping to raise money at the Benefit as well as running with their families at the 5K.” Incoming YPC Co-Chair Bradley Lindgren added,“ I believe I speak for the entire YPC when I say that we are extremely excited and energized for the many opportunities to contribute to Cove School in the upcoming year. We are looking forward to increasing our presence at the school and with the students of Cove, expanding membership and providing volunteer opportunities for other young professionals, and establishing more YPC specific events throughout the year.”

On October 25, 2012, the first meeting of the Young Professionals for Cove (YPC) was held at a pizza place in Ravenswood. Thirty young professionals, men and women in their 20’s and 30’s, came together with a vision to serve The Cove School through volunteering, fundraising, networking and advocacy. The group held two additional planning meetings during the year; they volunteered as spotters at the Benefit in February; they donated live and silent auction items to the event; they helped to organize Cove’s second annual 5K Run/Walk in June and held their own event over the summer. Additionally, the group was represented at the Cove Board of Trustees Annual Board retreat and hosted tours of the school.
