D E A R C O V E FA M I LY A N D F R I E N D S : What a remarkable year! The 2015-16 school year brought the Cove Community together in meaningful ways that touched the hearts of our students, parents, families and staff.

Thanks to all of you, Cove was able to serve our greatest enrollment in decades with 155 students spanning grades 1-12. Our year began at capacity and continued with a wait list that was only able to be filled by the vacancies of our graduating class. The need for a quality education for students with disabilities is great, and the ability of our school to meet that need is possible because of YOU! Thanks to your generosity, the opportunities for our students have grown and the accomplishments they have achieved are remarkable. The annual funds we raised supported specialized training, unique academic programs, state of the art technology, intensive services, expanded job coaching, etc. Each student at Cove

requires a highly individualized education plan that comes with significant costs that cannot be met through tuition dollars alone. The current financial hardships at the state and federal levels remain a threat to our overall funding as well and are risks to the progress we must make for the students and families who need it most. All of the gifts that were given to Cove last year are important to us. Each dollar counts and contributes to the unified strength we must have to support our students during these difficult times. Each of you has our sincere thanks for the countless gifts you have provided to our school. We thank you for your donations, for your trust, and for your ongoing commitment to make a difference for those with disabilities. With Much Gratitude,

Sally L. Sover, Ed.D. Executive Director

C O V E PA RT N E R S W I T H Cove is proud to have built numerous relationships with valuable community partners. Partnerships often develop through a parent, board member, or transition introductions. These connections help Cove foster deeper ties to the broader Chicagoland community.

C U R R I C U L U M PA RT N E R S Curriculum partners work with our students in specific areas of study that dovetail with their work, or provide materials and equipment that facilitate learning in a specific discipline. Employees from Pearson volunteered at an elementary read-in.

Volunteers from UL presented material on home safety to our elementary students.

Cove welcomed USI employees to clean up and transform the school’s outdoor grounds.

Winnetka’s Eagle Scout Troop 20 worked to restore the sensory garden by replacing clay soil, mulching, tilling and fertilizing the area.

V O L U N T E E R PA RT N E R S Volunteer partners touch Cove by donating their time and energy with hands-on projects. In turn, these individuals gain a better perspective of students with learning disabilities.

T R A N S I T I O N PA RT N E R S Cove’s transition partners participate in career day and open their doors for students to job shadow or intern.

OUR COMMUNITY THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR 2015-2016 FUNDING PARTNERS.

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY

TRANSITION SPOTLIGHT Cove Partners with Walgreens to give students an opportunity

The Cove School and Walgreens came together to help our students gain real world work experience. In the summer of 2016, three senior Cove students held internships at the Deerfield Walgreens. Between stocking, cashiering, and merchandising the students were able to learn the many responsibilities of a Walgreen’s employee. A Cove job coach assisted our students and was tremendously proud of the progress each student showed. Not only did the students work well individually, but they also came together to support each other and work as a team. Most importantly, our students were able to recognize their challenges, strengths, and weaknesses through performing the different positions. While some of the students enjoyed interacting with Walgreen’s guests in a customer service role, others gravitated to

more task-related roles such as shelf stocking. This learning experience helped Cove students under-

stand their preferred positions, develop a skill-set, and gain comfort in a new environment. Cove is grateful for the education Walgreens gave our students as well as the impact they made on their futures.

As one of the first members of The Cove Legacy Giving Circle, Rob stated “Cove has had an enormous positive impact on my daughter and our entire family, and I’ve seen how it has transformed the lives of so many students over the years. I’m gratified to have an opportunity to plant seeds to support Cove so it can carry out its mission for generations to come. My hope is that legacy giving will be a strong new pillar of support for Cove.” Please consider this simple way to ensure Cove will be able to provide an exceptional education for students today, tomorrow and beyond.

Sharing Fund To enable all students to fully participate in the school’s programs, Cove raises dollars through events and grants directed to a needbased Scholarship and Financial Aid Fund. Each year, Cove families also have the opportunity to help one another by donating to the Sharing Fund.

TRIBUTES AND MEMORIAL DONATIONS Did you know that you, a friend, or relative can make a gift to Cove in honor of or in memory of a loved one? Proceeds support students at Cove. A card will be sent to your loved one acknowledging your donation.

President’s Scholarship To honor each outgoing Board of Trustees president, we established a special scholarship fund that will help students in need of tuition assistance. The Presidents’ Scholarship Fund will continue in honor of each immediate past president upon their end of service as a lasting legacy.

AARON RYAN THAL SCHOLARSHIP The Aaron Ryan Thal Scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating senior to be used towards his or her post-secondary opportunity. We are grateful to our donors who continue to support our student body and the memory of Aaron.

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP From its earliest beginnings when it was founded in 1947 until today, Cove remains a leader in the LD field. Cove is committed to providing ongoing education and professional development for all staff members and area LD professionals. We strive to be considered thought leaders in the learning disability community. For the past five years Cove has brought experts such as Dr. Russell Barkley, Dr. Steven Feifer, Dr. Warren Rosen and Dr. Peg Dawson in the areas of ADHD, Dyslexia, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Executive Functioning to educate our staff and community professionals. Training sessions have occurred in topics such as math, reading, behavior, and diversity just to name a few. By enhancing our knowledge on these and other important LD topics, we continue to make Cove the best place for students to learn and flourish.

L O O K I N G F O R WA R D T O C E L E B R AT I N G 7 0 Cove is looking forward to celebrating our 70th year, a platinum anniversary. We are so proud of all the accomplishments we have made as leaders in education for students with complex learning disabilities. As we reflect on 70 years, we will celebrate the history, the progress, breakthroughs, and successes of The Cove School.
