Rabbi Michael Schwab's Installation Celebratory Ad Book
Dear Friends, On Sunday, August 30, we plan to come together as a virtual community to witness and celebrate the Installation of Rabbi Michael Schwab as our Senior Rabbi. Although this celebration cannot take place in person, we know it will still allow us to share this special moment together with Rabbi Schwab, his family and the Beth El community-at-large. Today of course we electronically publish this book containing much praise and admiration for him. As I have gotten to know Rabbi Schwab, I've seen that he is a person with a magnificent, caring heart, and great vision. He lives a life guided by halachah, Jewish ethics and Jewish values. He brings those same values to the decisions he makes every day on our behalf. I am privileged to work so closely with him. In many ways this is the culmination of a major life cycle event in our history – the official “passing of the torch” from one beloved rabbinic leader, Rabbi Vernon Kurtz, to another, Rabbi Michael Schwab. You, my friends, have made your support for this event clear by your kind and thoughtful generosity. Your gifts will help sustain Beth El's outstanding programs and activities. Thank you! Dear Friends, It is my honor, pleasure and great privilege to greet members of the Beth El community, my home for 31 years, and offer my congratulations to my colleague and friend Rabbi Michael Schwab as he is installed as the Senior Rabbi of North Suburban Synagogue Beth El and as occupant of the Vernon H. Kurtz Senior Rabbinic Chair. Both Bryna and I felt privileged to make Beth El our spiritual home for so many years. It was at Beth El that both our daughters Hadassa and Shira celebrated their B'not Mitzvah and it was at Beth El that Shira married Avi (Hadassa and Haim were married in Israel). It was at Beth El that we mourned the loss of our dearest ones – my parents, Bryna's father and my sister – and the community's strong support helped us make it through those difficult times. It was as Rabbi of Beth El that I was privileged to serve the wider Jewish and non-Jewish communities in Chicago, in Israel and across the globe. And it was at Beth El that we bid farewell to life in North America before we made Aliyah to Israel in a wonderful celebration that we will always remember. I wish my colleague and successor the same nachat, sense of accomplishment and pride in the community that I was privileged to experience. Rabbi Schwab's personal characteristics of kindness, generosity of spirit, and the bearer of a sweet and caring soul have already made a huge imprint in our community. His deep knowledge of Jewish tradition, his devotion to the Jewish people wherever they may reside, and his dedication to God, Torah and Israel serve as a guiding light to his congregants, colleagues and members of the wider community and are enhanced by his excellent leadership skills. He has assumed personal responsibility for actualizing our motto for many years – Aloh Na'Aleh – we shall surely ascend in holiness, commitment and dedication – and I am convinced he will lead the Beth El community to even greater heights in the future. Rabbi Schwab's nuclear family – Erica, Ari, Liana, Noa and Miri – have been enveloped by our community with love and they have served as a model family for us all. I have been privileged to know the extended Schwab family for many years and I know how proud they are, and rightfully so, of Rabbi Schwab's many accomplishments. I am most pleased and honored that my colleague, with whom I worked so closely for so many years, is now sitting in the seat on the bimah that I was privileged to occupy during my tenure. I know he will bring great honor to North Suburban Synagogue Beth El and lead the community with caring, wisdom and insight. May the work of his hands always be blessed. To the Beth El community I say: Hazak v'Ematz, be strong and of good courage, and to my friend, colleague and successor Rabbi Michael Schwab I say: May you go MeHayil el Hayil, from strength to strength. RABBI MICHAEL SCHWAB
Rabbi Michael Schwab is completing his sixteenth year at NSS Beth El. During this time he has brought to our synagogue a strong sense of community, engaging innovative programming, a deep love for Israel, an unbridled enthusiasm for serving others, a passion for our rich tradition and an uplifting sense of joy in teaching and practicing Judaism. In addition to his work at Beth El, Rabbi Schwab serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Solomon Schechter Day School, sits on the Executive Committee of the Chicago Board of Rabbis, serves as a Shalom Hartman Institute Rabbinic Leadership Fellow, and as a member of the National Council of Rabbis for JNF. Rabbi Schwab has also chaired JUF's Synagogue Federation Commission, served as Vice Chair of the JCRC, as a Chicago Global Justice Fellow for American Jewish World Service, is a past President of the Chicagoland Rabbinical Assembly, a past member of the National Council of AIPAC, and was among those selected to participate in Hebrew University's Melton Center Senior Educators Program for Outstanding Diaspora Educators. In addition, he was chosen as a fellow in the STAR PEER Rabbinic Leadership Program for early career rabbis who have demonstrated leadership excellence. Rabbi Schwab completed Northwestern University's Kellogg Management Education Program and is now a member of Kellogg's Jewish Leaders Circle. He is also featured as a scholar for Jewish Values Online, an interactive website that serves as a portal to Jewish responses to relevant ethical issues. Rabbi Michael Schwab was born in Philadelphia and he received his BA from Rutgers University, where he majored in History and Jewish Studies. Rabbi Schwab received his ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS) in May, 2004, and received an MA in Jewish Education from the William Davidson Graduate School of Education. During his studies at JTS, he completed the Clinical Pastoral Education Program at Penn Foundation for Mental Health and served as the Jewish Life Director of the Goldsmith Student Dormitory. He also spent several years studying in Israel at the Hebrew University, Machon Schechter and the Conservative Yeshiva. Rabbi Schwab is married to his lovely wife, Erica, who is a behavioral therapist and teacher of children with developmental disabilities. They have four children: Ari, Liana, Noa and Miri.

To the Members of North Suburban Synagogue Beth El on the Installation of Rabbi Michael Schwab, "Make for yourself a teacher, and acquire for yourself a friend and judge each person favorably (Mishnah Avot 1:6)." Today Michael Schwab is installed as the head rabbi of your kehillah, and for that you are incredibly lucky. But I want to relate to Michael’s qualities as a friend. On this mishnah, Avot De-Rabbi Natan comments, "A person can find a teacher to teach wisdom but to find a friend to learn with is very difficult…And who is a friend? One who thinks clearly. They eat and drink together. They speak with one another, and reveal to each other their inner lives." It is not easy to find friends like Mike and Erica Schwab. Mike and Erica have been incredibly close friends of ours for as long as they have been together, from the time our oldest children were born. While living in Israel, they frequently visited our home in Modiin, where our children would wake up early in the morning so that they could run downstairs and crawl into their bed. The hours we spent eating together on Shabbatot and holidays, drinking together, talking about our lives, our families, our work, our aspirations and our difficulties were precious moments to me and to my wife. We treasured those moments and look forward to more such opportunities in the future. I have known Michael and Erica since they were teenagers at Camp Ramah in the Poconos in the 1980’s. Indeed, Michael’s love of Torah, his love of learning, his love of singing and prayer, and most importantly, his love of the Jewish people, have been some of his outstanding qualities, noticeable to all even from that time. Michael and Erica began dating while studying at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem, during my early days there as a young Talmud teacher. Under his tenure as assistant rabbi at Beth El, I and my colleagues have made many visits to Highland Park, teaching Torah, delivering guest sermons, and getting to know the congregants (and on one occasion, drinking beer). Indeed, Highland Park has been a second home for me in Chicago. We at the Conservative Yeshiva have been blessed with the unwavering support of Beth El and its clergy, Rabbi Kurtz, and now Rabbi Schwab. Beth El is a flagship example of dedication to prayer, learning, social justice and community and we at the CY consider it an incredibly valued partner in the mission that lies ahead of us as Jewish leaders. We look forward to many years of working together, of frequent visits, of learning and of friendship. But I have distinct memories of fruitful conversations in Jerusalem, Chicago, and aboard a long fly back from Israel. You have the gift of engaging me, and I know not only me, with mind, heart, and soul together. You are one of the rabbis I most enjoy talking with, and from whom I learn the most. Our shared Philadelphia roots probably have something to do with that. More, I think, is the insightful, honest, commonsense, joyful optimism you bring to everything that you do. MERCAZ USA, the US Conservative movement’s Zionist organization, is proud to have Rabbi Schwab as one of its members and strong supporters. We know he was instrumental in facilitating a strong campaign in the recent World Zionist Congress Election at your kehillah/synagogue. Rabbi Schwab has many strong ties to Israel and we are proud of these connections. He studied at Machon Schechter (also known as the Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies), at the Conservative Yeshiva at the Fuchsberg Center in Jerusalem, participated in the Hebrew University’s Melton Center Senior Educators Program for Outstanding Diaspora Educators, studied at and is now a Shalom Hartman Institute Rabbinic Fellow, and visits Israel as often as he is able. What a wonderful opportunity he took to celebrate his son Ari’s bar mitzvah in Israel recently with a large family contingent. A New Start; An Established Tradition Organized on Chicago's North Shore in the years following World War II, North Suburban Synagogue Beth El grew from a handful of committed Jewish families to a strong congregation of more than 1000 families. Guided by outstanding lay leadership, throughout its history Beth El also established a tradition of excellence in its rabbinic leadership. Rabbi Michael Schwab now continues that tradition by becoming Beth El's sixth senior rabbi. He follows in the footsteps of his predecessors: Maurice I. Kliers: Born in Safed, in what was to become the State of Israel, Rabbi Kliers served as the synagogue's first rabbi from 1948 to 1950. He brought a vision of growth to the small congregation. Philip L. Lipis: An experienced pulpit rabbi, Rabbi Lipis came to Beth El in 1951 and sparked the growth of the synagogue into a strong and vibrant community of over 800 families. An advocate for the expansion of its physical facilities, Lipis oversaw the programs which resulted in a school building, social hall and sanctuary. Committed to Jewish education, he firmly established the Beth El tradition of strong educators and a vibrant educational system. A powerful preacher, he inspired a generation of young people to remain committed to Jewish values and lifestyles. Samuel H. Dresner: A prolific author and recognized scholar, Rabbi Dresner was an advocate of commitment to Jewish religion and tradition, but recognized and embraced evolving changes within the Conservative movement in the 1970s. An eloquent preacher, he filled the sanctuary each Shabbat with thoughtful and inspiring sermons. William Lebeau: Rabbi Lebeau's ten year rabbinate at Beth El, from 1978 to 1987, was marked by a reinforcement of the synagogue's commitment to education, religious tradition and continued growth. With a special warmth and personal interest in each congregant, Rabbi Lebeau established the congregation's Cultural and Learning Center, emphasized the development of its youth community, and recognized the need for expansion and improvement to the synagogue's facilities. He left Beth El to serve as Vice Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. Vernon H. Kurtz: A firm believer in maintaining high standards of traditional Judaism. Rabbi Kurtz worked to build a caring community and shared institutional goals. He fervently supported the State of Israel and undertook active rolls in many local, national and international Jewish organizations. He personally taught classes at many different levels and worked to bring to Beth El speakers who were relevant and impactful. By the end of

his thirty year tenure at Beth El, he had gained the respect and friendship not only of the congregation but of rabbinic colleagues from all streams of Judaism in the United States and Israel. One of the prominent leaders in the Conservative movement recently remarked that Beth El has been fortunate to have had “giants� serve as its senior rabbis. Rabbi Michael Schwab now embarks on his journey as Beth El's senior rabbi, following in the synagogue's legacy of strong rabbinic leadership. A lifelong member of NSS Beth El, Mort formerly served the synagogue as secretary and then president and is a current member of the Board of Trustees.
