D E A R CO V E FA M I LY A N D F R I E N D S : The 2013-14 school year was a great one, and one that is sure to be remembered by most as a year of celebrations. Thanks to all of you, our Cove Community, we ended the fifth year of our strategic plan strongly and were able to begin planning for a new beginning. The successes we shared during the past five years were nothing less than remarkable and were only made possible through the extreme generosity of this extraordinary community. The annual funds we raised each year, along with our Cove @65 Campaign, were able to support initiatives like our state of the art technology program, our new health and fitness center, a rubberized running track and new irrigated field, an enhanced transition program that specializes in individualized internships and post-secondary placements, stronger instructional supports, and expanded community relationships who embrace our mission and continuously partner with us to provide a quality education for students with disabilities throughout the Chicago area. As a result of these efforts and the hard work of our amazing staff, our enrollment reached capacity in the spring and now includes a waiting list as well. The current financial hardships at the state and federal levels remain a threat to our funding and are risks to the progress we must make for the students and families who need it most. Like our students, the dedicated team at Cove is determined to surpass any obstacles we face, and are deeply grateful to our Community for the many ways you have been there for us. All of the gifts that were given to Cove last year are important to us. Each dollar counts and contributes to the strength we must have to support our students during these difficult educational times. Each of you has our sincere thanks for the countless gifts you have provided to our school. T H E FA C E S O F CO V E STUDENTS Cove’s student body consists of 157 students in grades K-12. Some students travel from as far as Wisconsin and the south suburbs to attend school each day. Over 60 school districts are represented. The diversity that exists at Cove makes it a unique environment that broadens and enriches the lives of our students. Cove has served students with learning disabilities throughout the Midwest and we are extremely proud of the rich history, strong foundation, and bright future of our school. The fundamental belief in a highly individualized education within a safe and nurturing environment is the cornerstone of our mission and provides the basis for the strength in our academic program.
FACULTY Today, we have 101 staff members serving 157 students. With our small class sizes and comprehensive staffing, we are proud of the individualized attention we are able to provide to all of our students. Each year Cove continues to add specialists for the wide range of academics and services that we provide, to accommodate the growing student population. Currently, Cove’s faculty consists of: case managers, classroom teachers, and assistants. Specialists include: math, fitnesss, art, language, music, theater, transition, reading, and technology. Additionally, there are speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, social workers, and office administration. As the number of students who require a specialized education continues to grow, so does our urgency for continuous improvement.
LEADERSHIP Cove is fortunate to have a dedicated and committed group of individuals that comprise its Board of Trustees. Currently, there are 17 active board members and four lifetime trustees. The board consists of Cove parents, alumni parents, and members of the community. The professional backgrounds of our board members provide an array of knowledge and expertise in many areas. They support the school on committees such as facilities, finances, development, and marketing. Cove’s leadership is also is represented by Young Professionals of Cove, Annual Benefit Chairpersons, and The Parent Association.
THE FACE OF THE FUTURE In November, 2014-15 a new five year Strategic Plan for The Cove School was implemented. A diverse group of stakeholders helped develop areas of focus. The following six focus areas have been identified as critically important to the future of our school: Program, Transition, Faculty, School of Choice, Fiscal Integrity, and Governance. Through the rigorous execution of the plan over the next five years, the Cove School will strategically enhance the educational experiences of the students, and will position itself as the clear leader in the educational community. Many thanks to all who participated in this extraordinary planning effort and to those who will make the plan a reality for our future.

SCHOL AR SHIP AND FINANCIAL AID The Cove School’s student body has always been reflective of the reality that learning disabilities affect children from all economic backgrounds. The cost of private tuition for those who do not receive support from their local school districts is prohibitive for many families. Additionally, many families find it a hardship to pay for hot lunches, field trips, after-school sports and activities. To enable all students to fully participate in the school’s programs, Cove raises dollars through events and grants directed to a needbased Scholarship and Financial Aid Fund. Each year, Cove families also have the opportunity help one another by donating to the Sharing Fund. Two of Cove’s community events have a specific focus on scholarship and financial aid. At the 2015 Annual Benefit, over a dozen Cove High School students volunteered, selling buttons for a game of “Heads or Tails. “This effort raised over $16,000 for need-based tuition scholarships. “One Step at a Time,” Cove’s fourth annual 5K Run and Walk raised over $19,000. The Siragusa Foundation has supported Cove since 1986, providing much needed assistance to families in need of tuition assistance at Cove.
P R E S I D E N TS ’ SCHOL AR SHIP FOR T U I T I O N A S S I S TA N C E At the close of the 2014-2015 academic year, we had the opportunity to thank and honor our outgoing Board of Trustees President, Dean Gerber. Mr. Gerber is a dedicated leader, committed community member, and a special friend to The Cove School. Mr. Gerber served as the school’s president from 2012-2015. We are grateful for Mr. Gerber’s service and look forward to his continued support as an Honorary Lifetime Trustee. In his own words,“…I get way more back from Cove than I could ever give, and these are not hollow words.” To honor Mr. Gerber and all he has done for the Cove Community, we have established a special scholarship fund that will help students in need of tuition assistance. Cove is pleased to have Dan Dickinson serve as our current President of the Board. Mr. Dickinson is an alumni parent, an innovative leader and a role model for all. Cove continues to go from strength to strength with our new President at the helm. The Presidents’ Scholarship Fund will continue in honor of each immediate past president upon their end of service as a lasting legacy.
