WE’RE MAKING A tuition-free PROMISE.
DO I QUALIFY?
As part of K-State’s pledge to fulfill its land-grant mission by providing essential financial support to undergraduate students, qualifying Kansans can attend tuition-free and experience a world-class education with the Land Grant Promise award.
This award is offered for students attending the Manhattan and online campuses only. This grant is awarded as a last dollar grant. This means it covers any remaining tuition costs after all Pell grants an/or federal, state or institutional aid have been applied.
Check out the qualifications and renewal requirements listed to the right or visit our website to learn more and see if you qualify!

UNDERSTANDING TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID
UNDERSTANDING TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID
1. Scholarships
Scholarships do not need to be paid back and are typically awarded based on merit or demonstrated achievement. K-State offers general university scholarships and awards based on a student’s admission application. The university offers additional scholarship opportunities, including college/department awards, through the K-State Scholarship Network, or KSN.
• Students can also apply for external (non-K-State) scholarships, which can make paying for college easier and will be factored into the total aid package.
2. Grants
Grants are forms of financial aid that do not need to be repaid and are usually determined by financial need.
• Most grant programs are applied for via the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.
• Specific grants may have additional requirements.
3. Work-Study
Many students work part time on campus through the federal workstudy program, which allows them to earn money for personal and educational expenses.
• Students are considered for work-study via the FAFSA.
4. Loans
Loans are financial obligations that must be repaid.
• Pay careful attention to the terms and conditions of any loan you accept and do not borrow more than you need or can repay comfortably after leaving school.
• Most loans are applied for via FAFSA.

APPLY FOR FEDERAL AID
Applying for financial aid almost always begins with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. When you submit the FAFSA, you are applying for federal financial aid, including grants, work-study funding and loans. This application will need to be submitted annually each year you are at K-State.
• Obtain your FSA ID: If you haven’t already, start by obtaining your FSA ID, which will consist of a username and password. Your FSA ID is used to confirm your identity when electronically submitting the FAFSA. It’s best to obtain this as early as you can to ensure a smooth application process.

• Gather documentation and start your FAFSA: Check out the official FAFSA website for a list of documentation to have handy while you are applying.

• When submitting your FAFSA, you’ll be able to have the results automatically sent to K-State by entering our federal school code when prompted: 001928. Transfer students may add K-State to their current FAFSA if they are starting at K-State mid-year.
• The FAFSA helps each university determine your financial need. This number is identified by subtracting your Expected Family Contribution, or EFC, obtained from your FAFSA application, from your estimated cost of attendance at the university.
• The application takes approximately 30 minutes to complete online.
• The FAFSA opens Oct. 1 each year.
• K-State’s priority deadline to submit your FAFSA is Dec. 1.
