NATIONAL PILE CROPPERS INTRODUCES NEW PC 400 The new Pre-Cast 400 – PC 400 – from National Pile Croppers is a purpose designed hydraulic pile cropper designed to crop piles from 300-400mm. As its name suggests, it is designed to crop precast piles (PCC) with four or more reinforcement bars (rebar).
N
PC has justifiably been proud of the fact that the company is continuously looking at ways to improve the quality and performance of its equipment. The launch of the new PC 400 continues this proud development programme which has seen the company continuously invest in R&D and product development. Weighing in at only 550kgs, the PC 400 can be mounted on a 6t excavator for cost effective use and true mobility. It is designed to remove sections of concrete at approximately 250mm per crop. Equipped with four powerful rams and blades, it has been purpose designed to penetrate past the rebar and into the centre of the pile to leave a minimum of trimming. “Although we are very proud of the PC 400, we cannot claim that it is all our own work,” explains NPC company director Lee Aston. “We’ve worked closely with some of the biggest civil engineering companies

in the world to add features that makes the PC 400 a safer, more efficient and more productive solution. I also need to thank our technicians in the field as they’ve channelled feedback directly based on their real-world site experiences. It is this unique partnership that has enabled us to deliver high quality manufactured solutions with the features that are really required when cropping in the field.” A PROVEN SOLUTION Despite its recent introduction, the PC 400 has already proven its worth. As its name suggests, the PC 400 is used for ‘larger sized’ precast piles (PCC) with four or more reinforcement bars and has been developed for flexible and efficient use. Weighing in at only 550kg, the PC 400 is designed to remove sections of concrete at approximately 250mm per crop, with the four powerful rams and blades penetrating past the rebar and into the centre of the pile to leave a minimum of trimming. One of the first projects where the PC 400 has been used was by contractors Careys on a project for Holcim. “The PC 400 proved itself on this project. Careys reported high levels of productivity, and ease of use,” said Lee who added: “Being able to be used by a 6t excavator meant that cropping could be undertaken with existing equipment onsite. The cropping was undertaken in a timely and efficient manner, with the concrete and rebar being able to be recycled and reused in line with Holcim UK’s inspiring environmental goals.”
ADDED VALUE “The PC 400 further benefits from a new range of specifically in house manufactured chisels, designed with the purpose to not only penetrate the pile, but to leave a perfect finish with little or no tidying up. The new chisels effectively break up the concrete into pieces, and furthermore, the cropped unit can then easily be lifted off the pile enabling the removal and recycling of the cut away concrete in a safe manner,” added Lee. The new PC 400 is now available for hire or purchase throughout the UK and will be introduced globally in the coming months. The NPC PC 400 pile cropper is just the latest development from the pile cropping company that has fast become the UKs, and increasingly Europe, North America and Australia’s leading supplier of pile cropping solutions. www.nationalpilecroppers.com

DONGGUAN BAIER PLASTIC ACQUIRES THREE HIGH-TEMPERATURE ZSK EXTRUDERS FROM COPERION
D
ongguan Baier Plastic Co., Limited, a leading provider of high-performance engineering plastics based in China, has acquired three ZSK Mc18 compounders from Coperion. With these twin screw extruders, the company is expanding its production capacity for high-performance engineering plastics such as PA6/ PA66, PEEK, PEI, PAI, PPS, PPO, PPA, PA9T, PA10T, LCP, and PA46, which are primarily used in the automotive industry, the electrical and electronics sector, and mechanical engineering. The processing of highperformance engineering plastics places the highest demands on production technology and the compounding process. Drawing on its extensive experience accumulated over many years and numerous successful references, Coperion has designed the set-up of the three ZSK extruders and the suitable screw designs for the required high process temperatures. Combined with the high specific torque, the ZSK Mc18 extruders ensure an efficient and product-gentle operation, achieving highest throughput rates while maintaining excellent product quality. The new extruders will enhance the production capacity and expand the product portfolio of Dongguan Baier Plastic, which has successfully operated a ZSK Mc18 twin screw extruders from Coperion for several years. ZSK EXTRUDERS: TAILORED FOR THE HIGHEST DEMANDS High-performance engineering plastics are characterized by their ability to maintain their mechanical properties over long periods, even at extreme temperatures above 400°C. The compounding of these plastics requires specially configured production technology. Extruders used for processing high8

performance plastics must be significantly more powerful than those designed for standard plastics and must withstand high process temperatures. Coperion is recognized as an expert in extrusion systems in this field. With extensive know-how, Coperion has designed the process sections of the three ZSK Mc18 extruders for Dongguan Baier Plastic both mechanically and electrically for melt temperatures of up to 450°C. The extruders are equipped with powerful heating cartridges and effective thermal insulation to maintain the required temperatures consistently. The twin screws are individually configured for the processing of high-performance engineering plastics, and both the screws and the barrels are equipped with special wear and corrosion protection. The high specific torque of the ZSK extruders, combined with the specially designed twin screws, ensures a short residence time of the highly viscous melt in the process section at a very high filling degree. The result is very high throughput rates and outstanding product quality. Additionally, the side degassing units ZS-EG reliably and stably degas the plastic melt, further enhancing the product quality of the highperformance engineering plastics. Additional intelligent features on the ZSK extruders ensure
quick recipe changes. Both the side feeders ZS-B and the side degassing units ZS-EG are in easy design, allowing them to be detached from the process section particularly quickly. This minimizes downtime during recipe changes and increases the OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) of the production systems. To fully exploit the performance potential of the ZSK Mc18 extruders, the ZS-B side feeders are equipped with the patented Feed Enhancement Technology (FET). In the feeding zone there is a porous, gaspermeable wall section to which a vacuum is applied externally. The result of FET technology is a significant increase in throughput and improved cost-effectiveness of the compounding system. “We are very proud to support Dongguan Baier Plastic in their expansion with three additional ZSK Mc18 extruders. We are confident that the company is ideally positioned for the future with these compounding systems. We wish Dongguan Baier Plastic all the best and look forward to further collaboration!” says Joanne Shen, General Manager Engineering Plastics at Coperion. www.coperion.com

HOIST & WINCH SUPPORTS PLANT MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME WITH EIGHT-HOIST PACKAGE
M
aintaining critical equipment across a large industrial processing facility requires lifting systems tailored to the specific demands of each application area. For a UK dockside seed-crush and refinery plant, Hoist & Winch Ltd delivered a turnkey package of eight high-quality electric chain and wire rope hoists to support vital site-wide maintenance operations. Installed as part of a multi-year plant improvement programme, the high-performance hoists serve a variety of maintenance functions across indoor and outdoor process areas, including a quayside pump station, an ATEX-rated mineral oil extraction zone and several general production locations. Following close customer consultation, Hoist & Winch specified and supplied equipment from three renowned European manufacturers, selecting individual hoist designs according to each location’s operational requirements. One of the most demanding applications involved the maintenance of process water pumps situated below sea level at the dockside. To support lifting operations, Hoist & Winch supplied two GIS electric chain hoists, each offering 6-ton safe working load (Swl). Capacity, reliability, travel performance and hook coverage were all key considerations during equipment selection. The GIS hoists feature two-speed motion, crosstravel limit switches and remote radio control. Given their exposed quayside location, the hoists were also supplied with weather-resistant canvas covers and galvanised steel parking enclosures for protection when not in use. Elsewhere on site, maintenance activities within the mineral oil extraction area required a lifting solution suitable for operation in a potentially explosive atmosphere. Hoist & Winch specified an Italkrane YY series 2-ton Swl electric chain hoist certified for ATEX applications up to Zone 1 II B T4. The hoist incorporates flameproof electrical protection, anti-corrosion finishes and anti-sparking components, including brass trolley wheels, load hook and anti-tip devices. A low-headroom design, two-speed operation, cross-travel limit switches and radio control functionality further enhance its suitability for lifting vessel hoods and other equipment during maintenance procedures. A Hoist & Winch CompEx-certified engineer undertook the installation of all ATEX electrical connections. For the indoor and outdoor process plant locations, Hoist & Winch supplied Stahl ST series electric chain hoists with 3.2-ton Swl. These units provide maintenance 14

teams with a reliable means of lifting equipment between ground level and elevated work areas. A separate maintenance location required significantly higher lifting capacity, leading Hoist & Winch to specify a Stahl SH series wire rope hoist with 9-ton Swl. Here, low-headroom configuration was essential to maximise available lifting height while accommodating larger process plant components. Across locations, the hoists were again supplied with two-speed operation, crosstravel limit switches and radio control systems to improve operational control and positioning accuracy. Electrical power distribution was tailored to suit the constraints of each installation area. In general process locations, festoon cable C-track systems were mounted alongside runway beams. For the dockside and ATEX installations, however, specialised festoon trolley arrangements running along the bottom flange of the hoist runway beams were employed to accommodate beam configurations and site clearance/access requirements. Following installation, Hoist & Winch conducted comprehensive testing and certification of every lifting system. All hoist and runway beam installations underwent LOLER inspection, dynamic load testing and 125% proof-load testing before entering service. The company issued LOLER Thorough Examination reports for all installed systems. “Every area of this facility presented its own technical challenges, from dockside lifting operations and ATEX requirements to low-headroom maintenance applications,” says Hoist & Winch Director Andy Allen. “By selecting the most appropriate hoist technology for each location, we were able to provide the customer with a safe, reliable and long-term lifting solution that supports efficient maintenance across the entire plant.” Hoist & Winch completed its work on site by delivering operator training, covering safe use of the equipment, operating controls, limit switches, emergency stop functions, routine inspections, lubrication requirements and annual certification obligations. FROM REAGENT LOADING TO PRECISION DOSING
R
eliable reagent dosing in flue gas treatment depends on more than feeder accuracy alone. Before powdered materials such as hydrated lime, sodium bicarbonate and activated carbon reach the injection point, they must be loaded, contained and presented consistently to the dosing equipment. Each stage can influence material flow and the conditions required for consistent reagent delivery, making the wider handling process an important engineering consideration.
16
ENCLOSED REAGENT HANDLING AND DUST CONTAINMENT Trantec Solids Handling engineers containment cabinets that combine keg loading, local holding capacity and precision screw feeding within a compact, enclosed arrangement. During operation, a reagent keg is positioned within the station and mechanically rotated to discharge powder into the hopper. Enclosing the tipping operation helps contain dust during loading, supporting a cleaner and more controlled working environment.
rate can all influence dosing performance, while powder characteristics such as bulk density, particle size and flow behaviour can affect how the reagent behaves during handling and feeding. Considering these factors together allows the hopper, agitator requirements and screw feeder to be matched to the powder and dosing duty, reflecting Trantec’s application-led engineering approach to demanding flue gas treatment applications.
WHERE MATERIAL FLOW MEETS PRECISION DOSING Positioned beneath the hopper, the screw feeder meters the reagent at a controlled and repeatable rate. Maintaining a consistent supply of material to the auger screw is important for stable feeder output. Hopper geometry, material compaction and bridging can all affect material flow. Where required, an agitator mechanism within the feeder body can help maintain material movement and promote uniform filling of the screw flights. Variations in the volume of material captured between the screw flights can affect dosing consistency. Feeder configuration is equally important. Screw geometry, rotational speed and required feed
ADAPTING THE HANDLING ARRANGEMENT The method used to replenish the containment cabinet can be adapted to wider plant requirements. Direct keg-tip loading provides a compact arrangement where local holding capacity is sufficient for the operating duty. For applications requiring greater storage capacity, automated transfer can incorporate upstream bulk storage and a flexible screw conveyor. In this configuration, the conveyor provides an enclosed means of transferring powdered reagent from the storage vessel to the cabinet, reducing the need for manual replenishment. This provides flexibility for plants where

reagent consumption, available space or operating practices make direct manual replenishment less practical. The containment cabinet can therefore form part of a wider automated handling system while retaining its primary role in precision reagent dosing. A prime example is a roadworks project in Dello (Brescia), where the T86 played a pivotal role in preparing the site for a major local company, ensuring precision and operational continuity ahead of the subsequent paving stages. Thanks to its high manoeuvrability and engine power, the T86 enabled the precise removal of the entire topsoil layer, effectively eliminating irregularities and debris while ensuring a uniform base ready for the next steps of the project. It handled not only removal but also the spreading and levelling of stabilized base material; the T86 distributed the material evenly, compacting it progressively to create a smooth, stable final surface. Every movement of the loader combined power and precision, confirming the T86 as a valuable ally for tackling demanding tasks with extreme efficiency. The T86 has proven to be an indispensable tool for jobs where power, precision, and reliability must go hand in hand. BOBCAT T86 LOADER: IDEAL FOR ROADWORKS The Bobcat R-Series T86 compact
track loader represents the pinnacle of Bobcat’s technological evolution in its class. It stands out for delivering the highest engine and hydraulic power the company has ever achieved – qualities that make it particularly well-suited for the demanding tasks typical of road construction sites, where efficiency, versatility and consistent performance are essential. At the heart of the machine lies the proven 3.4-litre Bobcat Stage V engine, capable of delivering 78 kW (105 HP). This unit ensures smooth, reliable power delivery that complies with emission regulations, while simultaneously offering low fuel consumption and high productivity, even during continuous operation. One of the T86’s key strengths is the great flexibility of its hydraulic system, which easily adapts to various attachments and tasks. Operators can choose from three auxiliary flow levels: 87 l/min for loading, hauling or low-demand attachments; 138 l/min in High Flow mode for more demanding attachments; and the Bobcat-exclusive Super Flow, which reaches 159 l/min for the most rigorous applications. Majkol Fornari, Site Manager at Gambara Asfalti, states: “We chose to purchase the T86 compact track loader because we consider it the flagship of the Bobcat range. It is an extremely powerful machine that is making many of our tasks simpler and faster. “We use it every day across all our sites – primarily with a bucket
From left, Majkol Fornari (Site Manager, Gambara Asfalti) and Attilio Zanon (Sales Representative, Zanon & Ormac)

AJAX EQUIPMENT’S NEW CONTINUOUS MIXER COMBINES OVER 55 YEARS OF INNOVATION
L
eading solids handling and processing equipment maker, Ajax Equipment, has produced a food grade, stainless steel continuous mixer combining the company’s mixing and hygienic production innovations into a single machine. The Ajax twin mixer is designed to quickly and efficiently achieve the mix desired, whilst also minimising the downtime required between production runs. An inverter rated motor offers a range of speeds for operation and the ability to alter the degree of mixing intensity, making the mixer a very flexible processing machine. Different mixes can be realised by using either the LynFlow™ ribbon augers or paddle augers which are readily interchangeable within the mixer. The twin mixer’s LynFlow™ paddle or ribbon screws work together to provide gentle yet thorough mixing, ensuring a homogenous mix without compromising on the integrity of the ingredients with the ribbons offering a more gentle combining action than the modest shear intensity offer by the paddle augers. The mixer features a profiled casing which ensures all the ingredients are mixed actively by the sweep of the screws, preventing any ‘dead’ areas where material could otherwise build up. Cleaning is easy as the highly polished mixer has covers giving
great access to the internals and the augers can even be withdrawn from the machine from one end without disturbing the drive end arrangement. The mixer can be filled with water and cleaning fluid when its integrated blanking plate is fitted to the outlet. With the covers down the mixer can be safely run as normal and the actions of the rotating screws being highly effective in helping to remove any remaining product. “Food production is one of the most demanding processes with producers wanting to deliver a variety of high quality products safely and efficiently, often with delicate ingredients. The design of Ajax’s mixer ensures both hygienic and effective production, while the use of quick release augers provides flexibility by enabling manufacturers to easily switch between different types of screws for mixing different products,” commented Eddie McGee, managing director, Ajax Equipment. “From delicate nuts and cereals to sticky syrups, potato products and even chocolate pastes and inclusions, Ajax ensures every mixer meets the needs of each ingredient. Having built this new
‘state of the Ajax art’ mixer, we can support our customers fully with the possibility of having hands-on use, practical trials and rentals.” INVEST IN TESTING Ajax Equipment recommends starting any solids handling project by learning about the material and its characteristics. Investing in materials testing provides essential information for the design process and delivers significant value over the service life of a mixer for most materials. For particularly demanding materials, such as the friable or cohesive ingredients frequently encountered in food production, testing is of tremendous value. RECYCLING & WASTE MANAGEMENT
ALLU LAUNCHES NEW CONCRETE BUCKET TO ADVANCE ON-SITE CRUSHING AND SCREENING OF DEMOLITION MATERIALS
A
LLU, a Finland-based manufacturer of material processing attachments, has announced the launch of the ALLU Concrete Bucket, a new excavator attachment designed to crush and screen pulverized demolition concrete directly at the point of demolition. The new solution enables contractors to process demolition materials where they are generated, helping improve workflow, reduce unnecessary transportation, and support more efficient material recovery across demolition and recycling projects. As construction and demolition industries continue to prioritize operational efficiency and sustainable material management, contractors are increasingly seeking equipment that minimizes handling while maximizing the value of recoverable materials. Demolition sites commonly produce large volumes of mixed waste, including pulverized concrete, reinforced concrete, brick, asphalt fragments, soil, and steel contamination. Processing these materials on-site can reduce hauling requirements, simplify logistics, and allow reusable aggregates to be produced more efficiently for future construction applications. The ALLU Concrete Bucket has been developed to address these operational challenges by allowing contractors to crush and screen demolition material using the excavator already operating on the jobsite. Rather than transporting debris to a secondary crushing facility or bringing in additional processing equipment, operators can complete material processing 20

directly where demolition activities are taking place. This approach can improve productivity while reducing equipment movements and supporting more streamlined project execution, particularly on urban projects or locations where available space is limited. DESIGNED TO IMPROVE DEMOLITION PRODUCTIVITY Designed for excavators in the 25- to 45-tonne operating class, the ALLU Concrete Bucket accepts feed material measuring up to 300 millimeters (11in) and produces finished aggregate in either 0-50 millimeter (0-2in) or 0-100 millimeter (0-4in) sizes, depending on the selected counter blade configuration. Under suitable operating conditions, the attachment is capable of processing as much as 100 tonnes of material per hour, providing contractors with a practical solution for handling large volumes of demolition waste while reducing reliance on off-site processing. According to Peter Grönholm, Chief Executive Officer of ALLU Finland, the new attachment reflects the company’s continued focus on developing equipment that responds to the practical needs of contractors working in demanding environments. “Our goal has always been to develop equipment that enables customers to process materials where the work is taking place,” said Grönholm. “The ALLU Concrete Bucket continues that commitment by helping contractors improve efficiency, reduce unnecessary material handling, and recover valuable materials directly on-site.” The attachment has also been engineered to perform effectively
in reinforced concrete applications where steel contamination is commonly encountered. During operation, reinforcing steel and rebar can pass through or be separated as materials are processed, helping maintain continuous production while reducing interruptions that can occur when processing contaminated demolition waste. This capability allows contractors to process a wider range of demolition materials without compromising productivity. INNOVATIVE DESIGN SUPPORTS CONTINUOUS MATERIAL PROCESSING Unlike conventional jaw crusher systems, the ALLU Concrete Bucket utilizes rotating drums equipped with replaceable carbide picks working together with a counter blade structure to crush and screen material continuously. This design promotes a consistent material flow while reducing oversized concrete into reusable aggregate suitable for recycling, backfilling, road construction, and other civil engineering applications. The rotating drum technology has been developed to withstand demanding demolition environments while providing reliable performance throughout extended operating periods. Replaceable wear components allow routine maintenance to be completed directly at the jobsite, helping contractors minimize downtime and keep equipment in service without lengthy interruptions. Compatible carriers can also utilize ALLU’s Drain Line Eliminator™ hydraulic technology, further simplifying installation and improving operational efficiency.
RECYCLING & WASTE MANAGEMENT
Field testing has provided contractors with an oportunity to evaluate the attachment under real demolition conditions. Jonathan Bjon, Chief Executive Officer of Ursa Demolition, said the equipment has demonstrated strong performance during practical applications. “We have been pleased with the production capacity and overall handling characteristics,” Bjon said. “The attachment has performed well in our demolition applications and has proven capable of handling demanding material processing tasks efficiently.” SUPPORTING MATERIAL RECOVERY AND SUSTAINABLE DEMOLITION PRACTICES Growing demand for sustainable construction practices continues to encourage greater recovery and reuse of demolition materials. Producing reusable aggregate directly at the demolition site can reduce transportation requirements, lower fuel consumption associated with hauling materials, and decrease dependence on external crushing facilities. These
operational improvements can help contractors manage projects more efficiently while supporting broader environmental objectives within the construction and demolition sectors. According to Antti Rautamies, Head of Research and Development at ALLU, the introduction of the new attachment further expands the company’s portfolio of material processing solutions while addressing evolving customer requirements. “The Concrete Bucket has been developed to provide contractors with an efficient and practical way to process demolition materials directly where the work is taking place,” said Rautamies. “As project requirements continue to evolve, we remain committed to developing solutions that improve productivity, simplify material handling, and support responsible resource management.” The ALLU Concrete Bucket is designed for processing pulverized demolition concrete, reinforced concrete, brick, asphalt fragments, demolition rubble, and other mixed construction materials commonly generated during demolition projects. By combining
crushing and screening functions into a single attachment, the new solution provides contractors with greater flexibility while reducing the need for additional processing equipment on-site. ABOUT ALLU ALLU is a Finland-based, familyowned manufacturer specializing in material processing attachments for the construction, demolition, recycling, environmental, mining, and earthmoving industries. For more than 40 years, the company has developed innovative solutions for screening, crushing, mixing, stabilizing, and recycling materials, helping customers improve productivity while maximizing resource recovery. RECYCLING & WASTE MANAGEMENT
UNTHA SECONDARY SHREDDER BOOSTS PERFORMANCE AND AVAILABILITY With the new SR3000XC, KORN Recycling GmbH is modernising its substitute fuel processing operations, prioritising high plant availability, stable throughput rates and consistently high fuel quality. The new UNTHA secondary shredder was integrated into the existing processing line within a few days and has since been reliably producing up to 14 t/h of highquality main burner material smaller than 25 mm for the cement industry.. LEADING WASTE MANAGEMENT COMPANY WITH STATE-OF-THEART TECHNOLOGY KORN Recycling GmbH, based in Albstadt, is one of Germany’s leading waste management companies. With around 220 employees, eight sites, 66 vehicles and some 5,000 containers, the company operates one of the country’s most modern sorting and alternative fuel processing plants. Annually, around 100,000 tonnes of waste are processed and converted into approximately 60,000 tonnes of alternative fuels, including highcalorific fluff for the cement industry. RAPID REPLACEMENT OF A KEY COMPONENT As part of the modernisation of one of three secondary shredding units, KORN Recycling opted to use the new SR3000XC. Integration into the existing line was straightforward and completed within a single weekend. By the following Monday, the plant was already back in regular multi-shift operation. The robust shredder is driven by the beltless UNTHA Power Drive with an output of 2 x 250 kW. The machine processes pre-sorted commercial and industrial waste to a particle size of 25 mm, achieving
22

throughput rates of up to 14 tonnes per hour. The plant operates on a multi-shift basis six days a week, underlining the machine’s high performance and availability in demanding continuous operation. A SLIDE-GATE-FREE DESIGN MEETS INTELLIGENT MATERIAL HANDLING At the heart of the slide-gate-free secondary shredder is the XC cutting unit, featuring a rotor diameter of 1,000 mm and a working width of three metres. The large rotor ensures continuous self-feeding of the
material, meaning that a hydraulic feed-pressure pusher is not required at all. This reduces the number of moving components, minimises potential sources of faults and lowers maintenance requirements. The newly developed SR FlowGuide optimises material flow within the cutting chamber, reduces material carry-over and shortens the residence time within the shredder. This ensures that the available drive power is utilised efficiently and guarantees a continuous, stable material flow. The result is a consistently high output
RECYCLING & WASTE MANAGEMENT and economical running costs. And UNTHA has achieved this very well with the SR3000XC,” explains Alexander Korn, managing partner of KORN Recycling GmbH. DEVELOPMENT IN COLLABORATION WITH PLANT OPERATORS
Final state: Homogeneous feed material without oversized pieces. Image credit: UNTHA shredding technology GmbH
Even during the development phase, UNTHA relied on close collaboration with experienced EBS processors. A workshop was held to define the key requirements for a new generation of secondary shredders. The focus was on a slide-free machine design, a low-maintenance direct drive and a bolted wear plate on the blade holder. The aim was to create a design with as few wear-prone and high-maintenance components as possible. “In the new SR class, complex processes have been systematically streamlined. The result is a robust and high-performance shredder with high availability and low maintenance requirements,” explains Christian Lanner, Head of Research at UNTHA shredding technology. quality combined with high process stability and increased throughput. The cutting unit features six rows of blades with a total of 84 strip blades. The cutting tools are designed for four-way use and help to significantly reduce the cost of wear parts as well as downtime. In combination with the large screening area and a rotor speed of around 250 rpm, the secondary shredder achieves this high throughput whilst maintaining low wear. The direct drive also replaces the belt drive technology that
is otherwise frequently used. Tasks such as belt tensioning, readjustment or belt replacement are completely eliminated. This reduces maintenance requirements, increases availability and lowers operating costs over the machine’s entire service life. A maintenancefree safety clutch reliably protects the cutting unit and drive from damage caused by foreign matter. “What you want as an operator of an EBS plant is a stable process with high throughput, smooth operation, consistent output quality
As secondary shredding represents a key process step within the entire processing chain, the development focused on operational reliability and ease of maintenance. The robust design and good accessibility of all relevant components shorten service calls and reduce unplanned downtime. “The throughput is high and the quality of the resulting substitute fuel consistently meets our customers’ requirements at a very high standard. Our customers in the cement industry confirm that we deliver consistently high quality without any outliers. We are very satisfied with the SR3000XC,” adds Alexander Korn. DUST CONTROL & EXPLOSION PROTECTION
PASSIVE DUST CONTROL AT CONVEYOR TRANSFER POINTS Todd Swinderman, CEO Emeritus / Martin Engineering
M
ost belt conveyors experience some spillage and dust at the transfer point, leading to safety and air quality concerns. Passive dust control is achieved by retrofitting the conveyor transfer point to seal the enclosure and control airflow within it, allowing dust to settle back onto the material stream, rather than using powered air cleaners or HVAC hoods to extract particulates. Although passive methods are not a silver bullet, this engineering control should be the first step toward transfer-point dust suppression, for the long-term ROI with low maintenance and a track record of compliance. Nearly all global government air quality regulations for bulk handling address respirable crystalline silica (RCS) due to its association with silicosis, pneumoconiosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Raw material handlers are acutely affected by RCS. However, general particle emissions are also harmful, so most bulk handlers, such as recyclers, agricultural operations, ports, and steel producers, greatly benefit from the workplace safety that passive dust control provides. HAVE DUST, WILL TRAVEL The skirtboard enclosure is essentially a settling chamber. The basic concept is that a dust particle will settle out of a laminar air stream based on the speed of the air flow, Vair, and the terminal velocity, Vt, of the dust particle. [Fig.1]
24
Bulk Solids Today
Copyright © 2026 Martin Engineering Figure 1 - Theoretical dust particle settling distance “L” in skirtboard enclosure
Copyright © 2026 Martin Engineering. Figure 2 - Typical recirculation air flow results with 3 curtains
Current practice for conveyor enclosures is to design for Vair ≤1.0 m/s by increasing enclosure height. Two common rules of thumb for the enclosure length are 2 times the belt width or 0.6 m per 1.0 m/s of belt speed. It is interesting to note that if H is increased, the distance (L) that the average dust particle must travel also increases. CONTROLLING AIRFLOW The average air velocity through the skirtboards is directly proportional to the induced airflow
and cross-sectional area. Average velocities in the skirtboards due to induced air can range from 0.8 to 2.8 m/s. Belt speed has a minor effect on the average velocities. The maximum air velocities are almost always found where the air flows under the skirtboard curtains.[Fig.2] Particle Density - Particles of 40 and 100 microns (μm) in size – roughly the size of a human hair – settle quickly. A particle 10 μm or smaller is “respirable,” or able to penetrate the lungs’ natural defenses and cause serious lung diseases. As
DUST CONTROL & EXPLOSION PROTECTION bulk density increases, respirable dust emissions decrease moderately and must be properly contained. Curtains – The best results are obtained using three or more curtains. Martin® A.I.R. Control™ Dust Curtains create controlled recirculation zones that allow dust particles to agglomerate and settle.[Fig.3] Loading Chute and Tailbox – The width of the loading chute should be narrower than the skirtboard width. This folds the airflow between the first curtain and the tailbox, encouraging it toward the top of the enclosure rather than along the material’s surface. Skirtboard Length – If airflow is under 0,5 cubic meters per second (1000 cubic feet per minute), the length of skirtboard is 0,6m (2 ft) for every 0,5 mp/s (100 fpm)of belt speed. If airflow is greater than 0,5 cmp/s (1000 cfpm), the length of skirtboard is 0,9 m (3 ft) for every 0,5 mp/s (100 fpm) of belt speed. This allows enough room to establish circulation zones and – if properly sealed with skirting like Martin® ApronSeal™ Urethane Skirting – results in passive dust control.[Fig.4] Skirtboard Height – An enclosure height beyond 600 mm (24 in.) for the standard conveyor with a single exit curtain can reduce nuisance emissions but, space allowing, a taller enclosure
increases the average settling path for greater control.
Copyright © 2026 Martin Engineering. Figure 3 The Martin® A.I.R. Control™ Dust Curtain slows dust and turbulent air flow through the transfer point.
CONCLUSION Along with reducing emissions and spillage, passive dust control requires no power and only limited maintenance. By controlling airflow, dustbags can be added for an extra layer of passive particle suppression. Retrofitted equipment decreases cleaning labor, increases system life, improves compliance, and reduces downtime, making a quantifiable case for a short return on investment.
