INTRODUCTION
Expectations
Italy, the Mama Mia of all travel destinations. Maybe not Greece, but it was indeed ITALY. A place with rich culture, great food, beautiful views and in the midst of it all a group of young college kids that just saw an opportunity and couldn't pass it up. My expectations were high, yet I didn't know what to expect
Meeting the Group
Arriving at Newark airport I had one friend I've known from school. Everyone else was new especially being from Kean University at a Brookdale study abroad Not much interaction was done but everyone seemed nice at the initial "Hi" stage. I think everyone was mainly trying to process that we were about to board a plane to Italy, lol.
Feelings
I feel as if Italy is at the top of many peoples bucket list. To be honest, who would've thought my 21 year old self would be experiencing it this early on in life. A trip many spend years to save for just somehow crossed my path in college. I was nervous, not because of the travel, but because it was almost too good to be true
Note
This booklet with follow my journey throughout Italy. My reactions, my thoughts and pinpoint some of the noted Elements and Principals of Design featured throughout these spaces.

DAY 1
Walking Tour of Naples Naples Archeological Museum
Journal 1
Arriving in Naples, was chaotic to say the least We got off the plane, met our beloved tour guide Matteo and went straight to the hotel traveling with our luggage by bus and on foot through cobblestone streets, lol Everyone was exhausted but we powered through with a tour of Naples only an hour later We got a glimpse of the culture, a beautiful church, the Archeological Museum and ended off with a welcome dinner which served the heart of Italy, pizza! Of course everyone settled in and we all got to know each other pretty quickly. Easy conversation calls for great company.
Repetition & Balance
Everything was very much so balanced. Interiors and Architecture was mainly symmetrical, almost as if you were to fold an inkblot on paper. Repetition was also very strong and could be seen throughout every aspect whether that be structure, artwork or ornamentation. Everything came together very harmoniously.

DAY 2
Paestum
Ancient Greek Temples and Archeological Museum
Journal 2
Paestum, what a sight to see. Honestly, everywhere I looked I was in shock. These temples were straight off a postcard and made me appreciate the people of that time so much more. To think and even express how smart and incredibly creative these individuals were wouldn't do any justice. The surrounding area also featured live music by a few random but talented individuals and the museum held artifacts such as remains, ruins, tombs and so much more
Texture & Proportion
Texture was very visible throughout the temples You can see it in great detail through the pictures featured, in real life it was only that much more effective leading your eyes from the ground all the way up Proportion definitely played its role as well where the stones were so massive and tall that simply put, it was the "big" picture

Pompeii Villas, Theater and S Herculaneum
In my best efforts, Pompeii was both terrifying and beautiful at the same time The stories behind this now beautiful city was heartbreaking where the volcano covered the land in ash along with its people They say "the calm before the storm" but in this situation the history of the people trying to save themselves and escape the future tragedy doesn't state the equivalent to this quote The artwork, the way they praised the penis in all its glory, portrays the humor of such culture The beginning of time before we know it, or what we only know of it So many stories that will never get told and so many people that couldn't be saved Yet today the grass grows and the flowers bloom in their remembrance

DAY 4
Santa Ferdinando Castel Sant'Elmo
Jounal 4
This was our free day and you'd think we'd get some relaxation but instead me and a few of the girls set out for an adventure which consisted of a 2 5 hour walk up steep cobble stone steps to reach the top of Naples itself We started by the water, dipped our feet into the ocean and proceeded upwards to what we thought would be a 22 minute walk but the view walking up to our final destination, Castel Sant'Elmo, was well worth it We reached heights where a very contrasting culture of Naples could be seen, more upscale, and arriving at the castle was both relieving and breathtaking

DAY 5 Walking Tour of Milan The Duomo
Journal 5
Ahhh, Milan In all its glory it was exactly as I expected it to be We arrived by a 200, 300 km/ph train and the cobblestone was gone, the traffic was less hectic, and regular sized cars filled up the streets The Duomo was the most intricate detailing I've seen thus far in architecture The ornamentation spoke for itself and the shopping would make any true shopaholic cry
Pattern & Proportion
Pattern could be seen through ornamentation and intricate detailing Proportion through the scale of such ornamentation and architecture in itself I truly don't believe that such interiors could be replicated in todays time.

DAY 6
Memphis Milano Galleria Fornasetti Store Nilufar Gallery
Journal 6
These galleries for any designer are too die for. The most amazing ideas and creativity flowed through my veins this day and for anyone reading this who hasn't yet gotten the chance to visit them should know you will not be disappointed!
Shape
The Memphis Gallery used the strangest shapes to create beautiful works of art and furniture There was nothing quite like it to compare to except a child's imagination and an adults function Pictured is some of the galleries featured glass blown vases/decor along with a fun patterned dresser It reminded me of a Tim Burton set with bolder color
Art
The Fornesetti Gallery was very luxurious. It featured one woman on multiple pieces in various renditions. The artist took his obsession with this woman to a new level of dramatization ad created one of a kind pieces for everyone to later enjoy and fascinate over. Along with this, his craftsmanship included painting every single detail on his decorative furniture.
Contrast
The Nilufar Gallery presented some of its greatest collections throughout the 2 story building where high contrast colors made every piece standout on its own Pictured are two rooms that highlight how this contrast comes together harmoniously Representing the companies uniqueness through the choice of colors and their fun forms

Rossana Orlandi Gallery
Villa Necchi Campiglio
On this day, we visited the Rossana Orlandi Gallery and the Villa of Necchi Campiglio The Gallery to start was yet another fan favorite Everywhere room you looked into would take you by surprise and every room had its own mood to go with it Their greatest pieces included high end furniture with the use of resin and everyday materials Villa Campiglio, showcased the life of historic Art Deco The Glass Room was gorgeous with views all around the Villa and the floors had intricate detailing leading people from one froom to another seamlessly
Form & Balance
The R.O. Gallery featured mainly form, showcasing how everything could be manipulated and turned into something new. (Vase made of Smurfs, Chair made of Golf Balls) Villa Necchi Campiglio on the other hand focused on balance as each room had distributed weight and complimenting furniture pieces. The architecture was detailed from ceiling to bookcases and sleek for its time

DAY
8 Lake Como
Journal 8
Lake Como was enlightening To see the way people live in such a calm, happy and scenic place makes one aware of just how different our lifestyles are from them We are always on the move, the energy is getting up and going whereas here everyone does their tasks in peace No one from here really rushes, they're always smiling as if nothing can get in their way It empowers everyone around them as well Positive energy spreads and even on a rainy day you could feel it We took a ferry ride on the lake where mountains filled up the sky and the lake bordered both Italy and Switzerland which was a shock to me I've gotten to see a plane start off from the water first handedly while others swam along the lake on kayaks, jetskii's and boats The surrounding homes were painted in bright colors all along the water, all shining bright on their own Along with this the center of this happy town holds a parade of some sort only twice a year and we got to experience it in all its glory People dressed up in crazy costumes, singing, dancing in the blazing heat I'm sure you could hear the celebration in Switzerland! Another trip will be taken in the near future

DAY 9
Journal 9
Casa degli Atellani DaVinci's Vineyard
The final day got wrapped up through Da'Vinci's Vineyard, or Casa degli Atellani We had gotten a tour of the courtyard, a room of zodiac symbols, a library with multiple hidden doors and passageways, the first bottle of wine produced through Da Vinci and the smaller scaled vineyard Each room was filled with detailed art from floor to ceiling The floor being done in mosaic patterns, the walls in none other than painted relatives, royals, and historic tales The ceiling through intricate three dimensional wood carvings and or painted in Da Vinci's signature After the tour we got a second look ourselves where the surrounding environment was thriving in all its glory
Scale & Line
Line was most featured thorughout this space as each painting created visual stories throughout history It wasn't used as a way of wayfinding but lead the viewers eyes up and around the space simutanously Scale was another big one where sculptures would stand tall and grab focus of the exterior spaces Almost used as landmarks

FINAL THOUGHTS
Culture
Italy was rich in all they do. Maybe that can't be seen through some of the cities but they live in a world drastically different from our own The way they produce food, the way they sell, the way they walk the streets in confidence was refreshing. As stated before no one was really unhappy, it's a place where even your deepest troubles would be set free. They don't care about how others view them, they're just simply their own people and that gets carried all throughout with grace and dignity.
Experience
The group we travelled with turned out to be some of the best people I've met in a long time It's one thing to be friendly but to have a head on your shoulders and be genuine is rare to find these days and that's what this group was. Never a dull moment and lifelong friends with a memory that will live on for just as long.
Overall
If I had gotten the chance to do this again, I would in a heartbeat The nerves that take place before hand are temporary and worth while. I've seen and learned more than I've ever had on a trip, all with good company It didn't feel like a class or that we were learning perce but more-so an exciting adventure that we took on everyday. It brought energy, a new life and a fresh perspective to everyone that had attended. Thank You Italy!!
