Welcome! 2020 has been a year truly unlike any we’ve seen before. The entire world has faced an unprecedented and unexpected situation that has presented us with tremendous challenges. Our global interconnectedness means that every corner of the world has been touched by the pandemic. Tenerife is no exception. We have experienced the economic, social, and health crises that everyone has, and been forced to improvise and prioritize in a way we never thought we would have to. It has been difficult. But we have had the opportunity, throughout the year, to marvel at the ways humans find solutions in difficult times. We have discovered that we are resilient, creative, and able to work together for the common good. Most importantly, we have been reminded that our health, one of the most important gifts we have, should never be taken for granted.

We have used this year to reflect on the things that are truly important to us, and set these as the foundation for everything we do going forward. As you’ll see below, we have launched new initiatives in wellness, health, and community in 2020 that reflect these priorities and will guide us in the right direction. As we close out this year with many uncertainties still on the table, we hope we will take with us into 2021 a willingness to keep thinking about our loved ones, our neighbors, and our whole community, and finding ways to keep working for the good of the whole. We are always stronger together. Elodie Casolà

about the reasons, we spoke with one Irish couple in their

forties about their choice to remain at Abama rather than return to their primary residence, and their experience in general during these strange times.

Their reasons were many, but in answer to our question about

whether there was one overall driver of their decision, they said, “In Ireland, we live in the middle of a city, without a

garden, and we believed that, given the situation, we would benefit from the tranquility of the atmosphere at Abama.”

It’s a sentiment we’ve heard echoed by many of our owners.

They’ve also relayed that there was a real feeling of community here, rather than isolation, throughout the confinement. It’s something we’re very happy to hear, because our entire

team made our owners’ comfort their top priority through the communication and actions of our Abama Prestige Owners’ Club and the team at Las Terrazas.

oming into this year, Cathaysa Vargas, the Social Wellness Minister of Guía de Isora, our municipality, could have never known what was awaiting her. Her full slate of programs, designed to help the area’s most vulnerable populations, was already prepared. But a few short months into 2020, it was clear that priorities would have to be adjusted to adapt to our surreal new conditions.

We sat down with Ms. Vargas to talk about everything that has happened this year and the concrete steps Guía de Isora has taken to care for its citizens. We have been incredibly impressed by the government’s ability to identify and address the most important needs of the population, and its agility in finding solutions. +

n mid-November, 2020, we were delighted to finally launch our Los Jardines de Abama show apartment, opening this incredible residence to visitors and owners awaiting the delivery of their new properties.

To celebrate, we invited Juan Lima Coderch, Jorge Coderch Figueroa, and Alejandro Afonso Coderch, the principal architects from the project, to give us a video tour of the property. Their firm, Coderch Urbanismo y Arquitectura, has been fundamental in laying out the vision for Los Jardines, and they were the perfect people to tell us how this project will complement the rest of the resort. We also filmed a short interview with one of the agents from RE/MAX, who offered the client perspective on what makes these homes attractive and the kinds of families that this new project is bringing in.

RESORTS: THE ULTIMATE SAFE INVESTMENT

R E SORTS

the ultimate safe investment O

ur experiences over the past months have opened

our eyes to a new reality, and our expectations about

security, mobility, leisure, and tourism have all been tested. In the realm of real estate, we’ve had the opportunity to examine our investment choices to see whether they hold

up under pressure, and whether they fit with the realignment of our priorities.

This same examination has been taking place in the real estate sector at large. We’ve been talking with experts

about the effects that these uncertain times have had on the global real estate market and, most importantly, where and

how people are looking to buy property as an investment. As ever, much depends on your goals and objectives, but

professionals agree that the niche market of resort property is a standout in terms of its ability to weather any kind of storm.

Resorts offer a unique combination of financial, logistical, and

practical advantages that independent homes do not. These

are particularly obvious under the circumstances in which we find ourselves, but their benefits won’t disappear once

we have overcome these difficult times. Factors like stable

pricing, security, and amenities will continue to be important no matter the context.

Looking to the future, our recent experience will inform our choices, but so will changes in the way we care for the

planet, work, and travel. What is certain is that there are some fundamental elements that no one investing should do without.

R

esilience is defined as the capacity to recover

quickly from a setback, but sometimes it just

means continuing to move forward in the face of

difficulties. And that’s what we have focused on at Abama this year.

Our entire team has worked hard to uphold our

commitments to our owners and to the island, and keep our development on track. We’re proud to say

that construction never stopped, not even for a day. We’re proud to say that short-term investment in this

project has increased to over €500 million, and that it has created more than 300 direct jobs. Our delivery

schedule has not changed, and we are working under all the Covid-19 safety protocols to protect our workers, staff, and residents.

Abama is currently the largest development in the Canary Islands. We have 5 different communities under construction, as well as a commercial and

social center, each with different architectural and

engineering teams. The result is a landscape that is transforming before our very eyes, and a project whose economic importance to the island is significant

The media have taken note, and a number of pieces

have come out this year featuring our Project Director, Carlos Server. An article in La Gaveta Económica highlighted the importance of attracting foreign

residents to the Canary Islands, while a primetime television report on Antena 3 explored the heightened

interest of Spanish nationals in buying a home in a resort like Abama.

We plan to continue moving forward in 2021, and can’t

wait to welcome all the residents who have chosen to call Abama home.

BROKER SUMMARY 2020

Broker summary 2020 2020 has been an unusual year for our brokers, with an important set of challenges, to be sure. But it has also been a great opportunity for reexamination and reinvention. Remote work, the strengthening of

digital systems and processes, virtual tours, and the

deepening of client loyalty and communication have all been high on the list of priorities.

At Abama, 30% of our sales this year came through

brokers, and they brought in 200 potential clients. Here in Spain, brokers Engel & Völkers and Michael Nolan

were

especially

active.

Internationally,

Luxury4u from Münich, Germany, and Nieuwbouw Tenerife from Belgium were also great supporters of our properties at Abama. Overall, the greatest client

interest came from Germany, the UK, Spain, and Belgium.

In the coming year, our brokers will be able to build on new skills to create hybrid work methodologies that will leverage digital even as we can return to enjoying time face to face and on the grounds of Abama.

SKI CHAMPION MICHAELA GERG SEEKS TENERIFE ACCOMMODATION WINTER

Ski champion Michaela Gerg seeks Tenerife accommodation in winter E

njoying the sun and springtime temperatures of Tenerife

accommodation in winter is a pleasure even snow

lovers revel in. Case in point: Michaela Gerg, one of the most successful German ski racers of all time. Between

1980 and 1996, Gerg was in the top 10 of skiers over 100 times and in the top three 41 times. She won four World Cup

races and World Cup bronze in the Super-G in 1989. She

was in the Olympics four times. And this winter, we found the former professional athlete lounging on the terrace of her holiday destination at Abama Resort, taking in the views and the ocean breeze.

“It’s the first time I’ve been away from home in winter,” said Gerg. “That’s because of Coronavirus. Normally I would be

in Lenggries by now, where I have been running a ski school with about 60 instructors since 2008. In the fall, I’m usually busy for weeks preparing for the ski season, as was the case last year. But the start of the season has been delayed due to the lockdown.”

POST-SK I I NG C A R EER Never one to shy from new challenges, Gerg has been busy since retiring from professional racing. Seeking enjoyable projects that would allow her to meet people she would like

to spend time with, she created the Schneekristalle Foundation to help socially disadvantaged and disabled children.

In 2012, the year it was founded, the organization supported 500 children, and since then the number has swelled to 6,000. “My partner, Achim Winter,” said Gerg, “is a great help with the project, and his daughter Vanessa works sideby-side with me to find donors.”

Since 2013, Gerg has also been a successful speaker. She

gives 20 or more talks a year, appearing at skiing events and other gatherings to talk about her eventful life. She encourages people to pursue goals and set their own paths,

reminding them that success depends greatly on one’s personal attitude, but that team building and teamwork are

crucial in every aspect of life, whether or not related to sport.

R EMOT E WOR K I N BE AU T I FU L SU R ROU N DI NGS Recently, though, Gerg has been enjoying her relaxing days at Abama Luxury Residences in Guía de Isora. In her Tenerife accommodation, which she shares with partner Achim Winter, “We sleep in, have a nice breakfast at Melvin restaurant, go for a walk, or shop down in the village

of Playa San Juan. Every other day we golf on the fantastic

course, enjoying views of the ocean and the island of La Gomera. We’re going to drive over there sometime as well,

and visit the north of Tenerife. On a previous trip, we explored the National Park around the Teide volcano. I’m also doing yoga and Pilates with a personal trainer here,” says Gerg, “but work continues. Actually, I’m always working, but

that doesn’t bother me. I enjoy my work and I don’t perceive it as an obligation.”

50

ABAMA NEWS 9 - 2021

She can do what she needs to largely from her laptop: an-

swer emails, prepare speeches, work out new concepts for the ski school and the foundation, and more. “I can do all

that perfectly well here from our Tenerife accommodation. The Tenerife weather is wonderful, the sun provides light;

I’m even more motivated in these great surroundings. We are even considering buying an apartment here, and are looking at a few properties at Abama right now.”

ABAMA RESORT NEWS

CH A R I T Y GOL F TOU R NA M EN T Gerg is also beginning to think about a golf tournament to

be hosted with Abama Luxury Residences to benefit her foundation. With the experience of two similar tournaments

behind her in other locations, it’s an enticing prospect.

“We’ve just begun the planning, probably for 2022. We

would like to host the tournament here at Abama and invite up to 80 golfers to support Schneekristalle. Since I golf my-

self, I have a long list of potential participants, and Abama has many regular golfers, of course. I think together we can create a great event that the participants will enjoy, and that

will greatly benefit the disadvantaged and disabled children we serve.”

Gerg seems to have joined the ranks of those making their

Tenerife holidays into something more. The circumstances

of the past year have forced us all to be more flexible and to adapt to changing conditions even as we pursue the goals

that are most important to us, and for Gerg, with her honed iron will, it is just the latest set of challenges to face and overcome.

“I can do all that perfectly well here from our Tenerife accommodation. The Tenerife weather is wonderful, the sun provides light; I’m even more motivated in these great surroundings.”
