Like so many things in our world, there is considerable confusion about Jesus’ teachings regarding money, possessions, and financial stewardship. With misquoted scripture and statements taken out of context, misunderstandings have led some people to make ill-advised decisions and thereby placing themselves, their families, and even the work of God in jeopardy.

The Bible is the foundation of Christian faith, providing guidance, instruction, and a revelation of God’s character and will. Yet Bible study can sometimes feel like homework, resulting in knowledge without meaningful transformation. True discipleship requires moving beyond simply knowing Scripture to applying it in daily life.

ecently, I read a provocative article on LinkedIn, “The Masculinity Recession: Why Millions of Men Are Losing Purpose, Belonging, and Connection.” The author, Matt Hussey, is a therapist in the UK. Hussey asserts that men today have fewer friendships, less work, and less confidence in the future.

He reports that 74 per cent of suicide deaths in the UK are

males. Don’t miss that. Nearly three out of four deaths by suicide in the UK are men.

We’ve known for some time that men are struggling.

We see it in the church. Men are disappearing. They are disappearing from church life, from family life, and from social connection. This is not to say that women aren’t also struggling—they are. But in this article, I need to focus on my brothers in Christ.

A significant number of men today don’t have any close friends. Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever felt that you don’t have any friends in the church?

If so, you are not alone.

First, I need to remind you that you are not alone because God is with you. In John 16:32, Jesus said to his disciples, “You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me” (NIV). Even though His

closest friends forsook Him, Jesus affirmed, “I am not alone. My Father is with me.”

When you feel alone, I encourage you to repeat these three affirmations: 1.

God will help me.

(Isa. 41:13, NLT: “Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.”)

God has a plan for me. (Jer. 29:11, NLT: “I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord.”)

God is with me. God will help me. God has a plan for me. Repeat those affirmations daily.

Secondly, God has designed the church to be a community in which people are deeply known, unconditionally loved, and constantly encouraged. God’s plan is that His children live in this kind of transformational community. Solomon said it this way: “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend” (Prov. 27:17, NLT). In other words, we improve—we are refined and strengthened—through close interaction with one another.

I appeal to my brothers in the church. Please don’t disappear. Reengage. Seek out other men in the church. Go for breakfast together.

Play golf together. Form a men’s small group. Go backpacking or quadding. Mentor the young men in your church. Be real with each other. Encourage one another.

Hold each other accountable.

“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”

You are not alone. God is with you. And one of God’s purposes for the church is to ensure that no one stands alone.

Man of God, I urge you to be intentional about “sharpening” other men. What will you do?

About 450 people gathered at the amphitheatre to enjoy the Sunset Playlist

Sunset Playlist

T

he poster advertising Sunset Playlist, a Youth & Young Adults outdoor concert, said it started at 7 p.m., on Saturday, July 25. But before the concert even started, a few of our young adults walked through the park, started conversations with people, and invited them to join us later that evening. There was no pressure, just real conversations and personal invitations.

Hawrelak Park in Edmonton was a great spot to host the concert, especially with so many people coming and going. The music was excellent, and our young adults did amazing! They helped with setup and teardown, welcomed guests, provided security, served refreshments, and led

out in worship. We served over 300 drinks and 500 donuts and even had a visit from one of our local MLAs. James Wesley, lead pastor at the Edmonton South church, counted around 450 people gathered in the amphitheatre at the peak of the evening, many of whom were from outside our Adventist community.

The rain, a frequent uninvited guest this summer, held off until the very last piece of equipment was packed into the final vehicle. Then it poured! One of my favourite parts of the evening was simply being present where people already were. Showing up, meeting needs, and building friendships. We are living and loving like Jesus!

Canadian Adventist Youth Summit 2026: RISE T

he Canadian Adventist Youth Summit (CAYS) 2026 brought together youth leaders from across the country for a weekend of learning, connection, and spiritual growth under the theme “Rise”—a call to rise to leadership.

Held at Camp Woody Acres in Newfoundland, the summit welcomed approximately 75 participants, including speakers and youth leaders from across Canada, all united

by a shared desire to strengthen youth and young adult ministry.

Alberta was strongly represented, sending 15 delegates—including five ambassadors—who joined leaders from coast to coast to invest in leadership development and ministry training.

The summit focused heavily on equipping participants with practical tools and perspectives for leadership through a series of breakout sessions.

Topics included “Canadian Adventist Youth: Who Are We?” with Pastor Enrique Machuca, “Creating a Vision That Inspires” with Pastor Tony Cortez, and “Working on the Frontlines: The Youth Director’s Toolkit” led by Pastor John Scott.

Additional sessions addressed important areas such as organizational structure, crisis leadership, worship planning, emotional health and self-care for leaders, and conference planning. Additionally, “The

Forgotten Parts” by Pastor Elizabeth Pule, focused on intentionally including neurodivergent individuals in church activities and ministry spaces.

The keynote speaker, Pastor Massiel Davila-Ferrer, challenged attendees through messages centred on the life of Moses, highlighting valuable leadership lessons. Through Moses’ journey, participants were reminded that leadership is not rooted in perfection or ability alone, but in a willingness to answer God’s call and trusting Him to lead.

beyond attendance. The province was also wellrepresented through sessions on strategic visioning and branding led

by Pastor Roberson Dorelus and Thaksheela Dorelus.

These presentations helped equip and encourage leaders from across the country.

While leadership training was at the centre of the weekend, participants also had opportunities to experience the beauty and culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. Activities included a puffin and seabird boat tour, a visit to downtown St. John’s, and iceberg viewing with a coastal hike. Many of these

experiences offered a unique glimpse into the natural beauty that Newfoundland and Labrador is known for.

Overall, CAYS 2026 was a meaningful opportunity to connect with youth leaders from across Canada, build new friendships, and be empowered for ministry. It served as a reminder that leadership is about serving others and allowing God to work through us. It is our hope and prayer that God will use each participant to strengthen youth and young adult ministries and continue growing His church for His kingdom.

Honouring the Hands That Built Tomorrow

E

arlier this year, Sherwood Care CEO Kathy Fortunat was recognized with the Strathcona Award of Excellence for Service to Seniors, an honour presented to individuals whose leadership, dedication, and service have made a significant contribution to the lives of older adults in the community.

Presented before community leaders, fellow award recipients, family members, and supporters, the award celebrated not only Kathy’s decades of service in seniors’ care but also the broader impact that Sherwood Care has had within Strathcona County and beyond. Yet while the recognition acknowledged a remarkable career of leadership and advocacy, it was Kathy’s response that left perhaps the most lasting impression.

When Kathy stepped to the podium to accept the Strathcona Award of Excellence for Service to Seniors, she had every opportunity to speak about accomplishments.

After all, the recognition was significant.

Presented by Strathcona County, the award honours individuals whose leadership and service have made a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults. During the presentation, Mayor Rod Frank highlighted Kathy’s decades of contribution to seniors’ care and her leadership of the largest redevelopment project in Sherwood Care’s history, a project that will double continuing care capacity and introduce the first dedicated hospice palliative care beds in Strathcona County.

It would have been easy to focus on milestones. Instead, Kathy spoke about seniors. More specifically, she spoke about the generation that came before us. She said, “This award really belongs to the

seniors that we serve, the ones who built this community, the founders of Strathcona County, the people who worked hard on those farms, the people who came here with a vision and a dream.” In a culture often preoccupied with what is next, her words offered a reminder of what came before.

Every community has a tendency to celebrate the newest thing, the latest project, the next generation, the future that lies ahead. Yet every future is built upon foundations laid by someone else.

The roads we travel, the schools we attend, the churches in which we worship, the communities we call home all bear the fingerprints of those who came before us.

Many of those pioneers now live in places like Sherwood Care.

Throughout the Bible, God’s people are repeatedly called to remember those who came before them and to recount the faithfulness that brought them to the present moment.

They are the generation that weathered hardships, raised large families, built businesses, served their communities, and helped shape the Alberta we know today.

Their contributions often go unnoticed, not because they were insignificant, but because they have become woven into the fabric of our everyday lives.

Perhaps one of the quiet gifts of senior care ministry is that it invites us to slow down long enough to remember.

In Scripture, remembrance is never merely an exercise in nostalgia. It is an act of gratitude. Throughout the

Bible, God’s people are repeatedly called to remember those who came before them and to recount the faithfulness that brought them to the present moment.

In many ways, caring for seniors is a form of remembering.

It is recognizing that every resident has a story. Every wrinkle reflects years of experience. Every life carries memories, sacrifices, victories, hardships, disappointments, and relationships that have helped shape the world around us.

At Sherwood Care, this understanding has long been part of the ministry’s mission.

Compassionate care extends beyond meeting physical needs. It includes recognizing the inherent value of each person and honouring the life they have lived.

That perspective also helps explain why the current redevelopment project matters so much.

The new facility now rising in Sherwood Park is not simply an investment in infrastructure. It is a commitment to future generations of seniors and families who will one day need support, comfort, dignity, and compassionate care. In many ways, it represents one generation caring for another.

Perhaps that is why Kathy’s comments resonated so deeply.

While the award recognized her leadership, she redirected attention to the people whose lives have shaped the community itself. In doing so, she reminded everyone present that caring for seniors is not merely a service we provide. It is an expression of gratitude for those whose labour, faith, sacrifice, and perseverance helped build the world we inherited.

As Seventh-day Adventists, we understand that every person is created in the image of God and worthy of dignity, regardless of age or ability. Senior care ministry gives us a unique opportunity to live out that belief in tangible ways.

Kathy Fortunat’s award is certainly worthy of celebration. Yet perhaps its greatest significance lies in the truth her acceptance speech highlighted: that the measure of a community is found not only in what it builds for tomorrow, but also in how it honours those who helped build today.

As Sherwood Care continues to grow and prepare for the future, we invite our church family to be part of this important ministry. Whether through prayer, volunteering, words of encouragement, or financial support, each of us has an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the seniors entrusted to our care. Together, we can help ensure that older adults continue to experience the dignity, compassion, and Christ-centred care that reflects God’s love.

Sherwood Care Builds Community Connections at the Great Canadian Trade Fair

S

herwood Care was delighted to participate in this year’s Great Canadian Trade Fair in Sherwood Park, where we had the opportunity to connect with many members of the community and share the exciting vision for our future. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many visitors stopping by to learn more about our new build and expanded services. It was especially meaningful to meet individuals with a long history connected to Sherwood Care, some spanning more than 40 years, who shared heartfelt appreciation for the care their loved ones had received. These conversations were powerful reminders of the lasting impact Sherwood Care has had in the lives of so many families over the years.

We also had the privilege of introducing Sherwood Care to many who were learning about us for the very first time. Once they discovered who we are and the care we provide, many expressed excitement about the future of Sherwood Care and the expanded services being planned. Some expressed interest in volunteering and others in employment opportunities, while others—particularly neighbours in the surrounding community—were enthusiastic about future amenities and the greater sense of connection our new development will bring.

Our hospice plans and expanded care capacity sparked especially meaningful conversations and touched many hearts. Visitors expressed strong support for the additional beds so greatly needed in our region, recognizing the increasing demand for compassionate, quality care for seniors and those requiring endof-life support. Many also asked thoughtful questions about navigating the care system for loved ones in need of additional support, underscoring the importance of this expansion for families throughout our community.

Under the leadership of Lisa Smith from DCG, our capital campaign volunteers, Jean Boisvert, Roxanne Carr, and Iris Evans helped champion awareness of the campaign, while Sherwood Care leaders Michelle Boisvert (CEO Assistant/ Manager Housekeeping and Laundry), Krystal Laubman (Director of Care), and Pastor David Benjamin (Chaplain) shared who we are, what we do, and where we are headed. The event was a wonderful opportunity to strengthen community connections, raise awareness, and open doors for future partnerships.

Church Planter Roundtable

T

he first “Church Planter Roundtable” event was held at the Alberta Conference office on Sabbath, May 23. The inaugural event was attended by all five of our church planters who are in Years 2-5 of their church plant, as well as spouses and coaches.

Church planters in their first year attend four 2-day training events (the ACTS Modules). After their first year, this annual “Church Planter Roundtable” gathering provides the opportunity for conference leadership to pour into our front-line missionaries. It promotes fellowship and discussion, and is a day of inspiration, motivation, and edification.

presentations—Church Planting Landmines and Ten Effective Evangelistic Approaches. The church planters each shared a progress report, then we spent 90 minutes in a roundtable discussion. We enjoyed two delicious meals together, served by Alfredo and Areli Trejo, and we concluded our day by praying over each of the church planters. It was truly a high Sabbath!

The Church Planters who attended were Ian Bramble, NOW Church in Edmonton;

Seth Braza, Edmonton South Filipino (aka ESFIL); Viktor Kononenko, Calgary Ukrainian; Waya Manuel, Lakeland Fellowship in Cold Lake; and Mario Parchment, The Friendship Company (aka TFC) in Lacombe.

In addition to these five church plants, there are several others currently taking shape: Calgary Young Adult, Calgary Ethiopian, Edmonton Ukrainian, and Edmonton Karen. Please join me in praying for more lay church planters.

his year, Club Ministries across Alberta has been filled with meaningful opportunities for children, youth, families, and leaders to grow in their relationship with Jesus. From opening the Bible together and learning its stories to worshipping under the open sky, serving, leading, and building lifelong friendships, every program has carried the same purpose: helping this generation experience a faith that is real and personal.

Isaiah—Pathfinder Bible Experience

For our pathfinders, the Pathfinder Bible Experience (PBE) took them deep into the book of Isaiah.

Isaiah is filled with powerful messages of hope, redemption, prophecy, and God’s promise of salvation. Through months of study, Pathfinders were challenged not only to remember Scripture but to spend intentional time in God’s Word.

The journey required commitment, teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.

Yet beyond the scores and levels of participation, the greatest accomplishment was seeing young people dedicate hours to studying the Bible together.

This year, four teams from our conference advanced through every level of the Pathfinder Bible Experience, all the way to the North American Division Finals! It was a life-changing experience, not only Photos contributed

because they achieved First Place ranking, but because they had the opportunity to join more than 3,000 pathfinders who shared the same dedication, passion for Scripture, and spirit of fellowship.

Every chapter studied and every verse remembered represents something much greater: God’s Word being planted in the hearts and minds of a new generation.

Heaven Is Real— Adventurer Club Family Camp This year’s Adventurer Family Camp brought families together around a wonderful promise: Heaven Is Real!

Throughout the weekend, adventurers learned that heaven is more than a beautiful Bible story, it is the home Jesus is preparing for us and the hope we have because of Him. Through worship, activities, family experiences, friendships, and time together at camp, children were invited to imagine the incredible future God has promised while also discovering what it means to walk with Jesus today.

With approximately 1,300 people participating, the campground was filled with families worshipping, learning, laughing, and creating unforgettable memories together.

Nwamiko Madden making the call to follow Jesus ALBERTA CONFERENCE keynote speaker for the weekend, brought ADVENTURER FAMILY CAMP 2026 the message of heaven and salvation to life in a way that children and adults alike could easily understand and connect with. His messages helped make the promise of heaven feel real, personal, and exciting!

One of the most memorable experiences of the weekend was a special station that was transformed into a glimpse of heaven! Families had the opportunity to walk through this interactive experience and imagine, even for a few moments, what it might be like when we finally reach the home Jesus is preparing for us. It was truly inspiring!

By the end of the weekend, one thing was clear: we want to be in heaven! Children and families left camp with hearts full of hope and a renewed longing for the day when Jesus will return and take us home.

Choosing Jesus: Pathfinders respond to a baptism call made by Pr Rodolfo Alvir

Speak Lord, I Trust You!—Pathfinder Camporee The 2026 Alberta Pathfinder Camporee gathered hundreds of pathfinders and leaders at Foothills Camp under the theme Speak Lord, I Trust You! Throughout the weekend, with messages from our keynote speaker, Pastor Rodolfo Alvir, pathfinders were challenged to listen for God’s voice and have the courage to respond with trust.

The camporee was filled with worship, honours, activities, sports, competitions, fellowship, and opportunities for pathfinders to grow physically, socially, mentally, and spiritually.

One of the most powerful moments came during Sabbath worship, when young people were invited to make personal decisions for Jesus. Celebrating a baptism

together reminded everyone why Pathfinder ministry exists. Behind every uniform, honour, activity, campout, and event is a greater mission: leading young people into a lifelong relationship with Jesus.

With nearly 500 pathfinders and more than 300 leaders and support staff, the weekend was also a powerful reminder of the incredible community surrounding our young people.

Our pathfinders look forward to this event every year, and it has truly become a highlight of their lives. In a world filled with distractions and so many influences competing for their attention, creating intentional opportunities for our young people to step away, connect with one another, experience God, and strengthen their faith is more important than ever.

Faith in Motion— Master Guide Outdoor Backpacking Trip Faith in Motion took on a very literal meaning this year as our master guides headed into the outdoors for an unforgettable Master Guide Outdoor (MGO) backpacking trip!

With backpacks on and the trail ahead, participants were challenged physically, mentally, and spiritually.

The experience provided an opportunity to step away from everyday routines and distractions, enjoy God’s incredible creation, build meaningful relationships, and strengthen their faith along the way.

Backpacking is about much more than reaching a destination. It requires preparation, perseverance, teamwork, and the willingness to keep moving even when the trail gets difficult—powerful lessons that also apply to our journey of faith and leadership.

Through shared challenges, conversations, prayer, laughter, and time surrounded by nature, Faith in Motion was an opportunity to experience God in a practical and meaningful way.

It was faith lived, faith tested, and faith in motion!

Parade ready!

Sabbath afternoon at camp meeting 2026

Club Ministries at Camp Meeting

Club Ministries was once again a vibrant part of Alberta Conference Camp Meeting, bringing adventurers, pathfinders, master guides, families, and leaders together for a week of connection, learning, and fun!

Throughout the week, the Club Ministries Hub became a gathering place where children, youth, and leaders could participate in hands-on activities, work on honours, connect with friends, and discover more about Adventurer, Pathfinder, and Master Guide ministries. Each day brought something different, creating opportunities to learn new skills while building friendships and enjoying the Club Ministries experience.

One of the biggest highlights of the week was our annual Club Ministries Parade. Approximately 700 adventurers, pathfinders, master guides, and leaders proudly marched together, filling the camp meeting grounds with uniforms, flags, smiles, and Club Ministries spirit.

The parade is always more than just marching in uniform. It is a beautiful visual representation of the children, youth, families, and dedicated volunteers who make up this ministry across Alberta. Seeing different generations

When we look back at these events, we see much more than a calendar filled with programs.

We see adventurers discovering the Bible with their families. We see pathfinders opening their Bibles and hiding God’s Word in their hearts. We see families holding onto the promise that heaven is real. We see young people responding, “Speak Lord, I Trust You!” And we see leaders putting their faith in motion as they mentor and disciple the next generation.

Different ages. Different programs. Different experiences. But one mission: helping children, youth, families, and leaders know Jesus, trust Him, and live their faith.

We celebrate God’s incredible blessings alongside our countless volunteers, coordinators, club leaders, parents, pastors, church communities, and staff who contributed to making this year not only possible, but truly exceptional! We look ahead with great expectation to all that will continue to do through Club Ministries!

What Did Jesus (Not) Say About Money?

L

ike so many things in our world, there is considerable confusion about Jesus’ teachings regarding money, possessions, and financial stewardship. With misquoted scripture and statements taken out of context, misunderstandings have led some people to make ill-advised decisions, and thereby placing themselves, their families, and even the work of God in jeopardy.

Again and again, Jesus moved the discussion from the amount of money a person possessed to the allegiance of the person’s heart.

Here are five things that Jesus did not say about money that many people—through assumptions and cultural interpretations instead of the direct words of Christ in Scripture—have come to believe in the Christian world today.

1. Jesus did not say that wealth is inherently evil.

A commonly misquoted passage of scripture regarding this comes from the writings of Paul. Many believe that “money is the root of all evil” but Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, actually wrote, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils…” (1 Tim. 6:10, ESV).

Somehow, some believers today have come to equate the possession of wealth with sin or moral failure. Neither Paul nor Jesus ever condemned money itself, but rather the love of money. The distinction is important: money and possessions can become powerful tools God uses through faithful believers, but the love of wealth is a form of idolatry that leads hearts away from the Lord. That’s why Jesus said: “No one can serve two masters. … You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money” (Matt. 6:24, NLT).

Jesus repeatedly warned about greed and misplaced devotion in our lives, but not about money itself. Possessing material resources is one thing, but being possessed by them is another.

2. Jesus did not say that obedience or giving leads to financial prosperity.

This concept is often called the “prosperity gospel.” The idea is that if you obey and give, then you will be materially blessed every time. But this “prosperity gospel” idea is not found in Jesus’ words. Jesus didn’t say, “If you have enough faith, God will make you wealthy and untroubled.” In fact, Jesus actually said His followers would experience difficulties in this life.

“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous!

I have conquered the world” (John 16:33, CSB).

Jesus taught that believers should steward faithfully and give generously. He did teach that there are blessings to be received when one is faithful and obedient to the Lord’s commands. However, the blessings Jesus mentioned are not guaranteed to be financial gain, but rather could come in the form of spiritual, relational, and eternal blessings. We can see the non-temporal emphasis of Jesus’ message in Matthew 6:19-21: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven … For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (ESV).

Jesus called His disciples to something greater than mechanical obedience. He called for faithful stewardship and heartfelt worship that flows from love, gratitude, and unbending trust in the abundant provisions of God. Grace never produces a mindset that asks, “What is the least I can give?” Instead, it reveals obedience to be the grateful expression and joyful, trusting response of a surrendered life.

4. Jesus did not say that believers must give all their money away to be saved.

Jesus spoke to the rich young ruler one day, and those words have since been misunderstood and misapplied. “‘If you want to be perfect,’ Jesus said to him, ‘go, sell your belongings and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.

Then come, follow me’” (Matt. 19:21, CSB).

Jesus was speaking to one individual whose wealth had become the barrier between himself and wholehearted discipleship.

He was addressing one young man’s heart, not establishing a financial formula for all believers.

Some have interpreted Jesus’ words to mean that everyone who wishes to follow Him must sell all their possessions, give everything away, and thereafter live 28 Alberta Adventist News

in poverty. But that is not what Jesus was teaching.

The rich young ruler had claimed to keep God’s commandments, yet Jesus revealed that there was one area of surrender he still resisted. In effect, he was unwilling to obey the first commandment: “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exod. 20:3, NKJV).

The problem was not that he possessed wealth, but that his wealth possessed him. This is evident when the young man “went away grieving, because he had many possessions” (Matt. 19:22, CSB).

Jesus did acknowledge that wealth can make entering God’s kingdom more difficult because of the powerful hold it can have on the human heart. Yet, He never taught that wealthy people cannot be faithful disciples or be saved eternally.

Scripture consistently shows that owning wealth is not contrary to God’s will.

Abraham, Job, and David

all possessed significant resources while remaining faithful servants of God. Their wealth was never presented as a problem, as they held God’s blessings with open hands. Likewise, Joseph of Arimathea generously provided Jesus’ burial place and Lydia used her home to support the early church, as did Mary, Martha, and Lazarus for Jesus. Throughout Scripture, the issue is never wealth itself, but whether wealth possesses the heart.

Just as Jesus didn’t teach a prosperity gospel, neither did He teach a poverty gospel.

Being rich is not sin, and being poor isn’t a mark of holiness. Jesus ministered to both rich and poor and called every person to wholehearted discipleship. Nothing about that has changed today.

5. Jesus did not say that financial net worth equals spiritual worth.

Some people assume that financial success reflects spiritual maturity—that net worth equals spiritual worth.

This misunderstanding was prominent in Jesus’ day, when many assumed that financial prosperity was evidence of God’s special favour, and that poverty or suffering indicated spiritual failure. The rich folks were viewed as blessed by God, and the poor were overlooked and unfairly judged.

DEPARTMENT NEWS ruler and he had walked away, this interaction occurred: “Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven.’ ...

When the disciples heard this, they were utterly astonished and asked, ‘Then who can be saved?’”

(Matt. 19:23, 25, CSB).

The disciples were shocked at Jesus’ words. In their thinking (at that time) a wealthy person was assumed to be especially blessed

by God. Jesus revealed that wealth is not proof of spiritual approval. A person can have great possessions and still have a heart that is attached to earthly treasure and far from God. Similar sentiment was expressed in the parable of the rich fool that Jesus shared in Luke 12:16- 21.

The parable’s main character viewed wealth as security and blessing, but Jesus showed that earthly abundance does not equal spiritual riches. While being financially successful, the man’s condition was spiritually bankrupt.

A person’s bank account does not reveal the condition of their heart or spiritual maturity. A wealthy believer

may faithfully steward God’s blessings, while a poor person may still be consumed by covetousness—and the reverse is equally true. “[Jesus] then told them, ’Watch out and be on guard against all greed, because one’s life is not in the abundance of his possessions’” (Luke 12:15, CSB).

In God’s kingdom, spiritual worth is not determined by financial net worth. Generous giving doesn’t automatically make one righteous or blessed.

The condition and intent of the heart is what matters in the eyes of God. Jesus spoke more about money than other practical subjects because one’s use of money usually reveals priorities, values, and where trust is placed. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt. 6:21, CSB).

Conclusion Modern misunderstandings often attribute ideas to Jesus that He never taught about money. He never said that money is evil, that faithfulness guarantees wealth, that riches prevent salvation, that poverty is a virtue, or that financial success reflects spiritual worth.

Throughout His ministry, Jesus consistently directed His followers’ attention to something deeper. Jesus’ concern was never the size of a person’s bank account, but the lordship of their heart.

He taught a holistic view of stewardship that is ultimately about worship, trust in God, surrender, and eternal priorities. Money was never really the focus of His teaching; rather, it remains one of the clearest indicators of where one’s heart-allegiance truly lies.

Jesus did say, “You cannot serve God and mammon.” He did say, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” He did say, “Seek first the kingdom of God.” And He reminded us that “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” One day, to those who have trusted Him, lived faithfully by His grace, and stewarded His gifts for His glory, He will say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Bible Conference on the Triunity of God Results in Consensus I

nspired by the early Adventist Bible Conferences, a small group of pastors, professors, and lay members met from March 13–15, 2026, to arrive at a consensus that could guide teaching on the “Triunity of God” in the Alberta Conference.

They were joined by keynote presenter, Matthew Tinkham, Jr., a pastor in the GeorgiaCumberland Conference; Burman University professors Jonathan Campbell and Samuel Pagán; and SDACC president Paul Llewellyn. As organized by pastors Tyler Rosengren (Ministerial Director), David Hamstra, and Ryan Brousson, from Friday evening to Saturday night the group did little else but eat, sleep, sing, pray, present research, and discuss the Trinity: even the Sabbath-afternoon walk was abandoned in favour of study.

The drafting committee consisted of Pastors Brousson, Hamstra, and Tinkham, who worked into the wee hours of Sunday morning to produce a rough draft. The rest of the group refined the rough draft and voted the first draft of its consensus statement before the conference adjourned on Sunday afternoon. The statement was further revised

and updated by the drafting committee in consultation with multiple Adventist theologians before being presented to our conference’s pastors in their district ministerial associations.

Each round of presentation garnered more feedback to incorporate until the refined document was finally approved.

The whole process and its final product indicate that the Spirit who guided the foundational Adventist Bible conferences of the 1850s is still guiding our movement to understand the deep things

of God, that Adventist leaders can still gather around God’s word and experience unity by following its instruction and correction, and that Christ is still enlightening His people as they near His return.

Bible Study for Spiritual Maturity:

Moving from Information to Transformation

Sacred Scriptures The Bible is the foundational sacred text of Christianity. It serves as the ultimate spiritual authority, containing God’s inspired Word and outlining the relationship between God and humanity. Christians view it as a guide for living, a tool for moral instruction, and the story of salvation through Jesus Christ. Paul says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (NIV).

Christians believe that the entire Bible was divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit. In other words, human authors wrote the words as they were guided by God. Scripture is God’s self-revelation to humanity, revealing His character, love, and will. It is the standard for Christian doctrine, theology, and ethical living. The Bible shapes Christian worship, prayer, and liturgy, thus binding the global community of Seventh-day Adventist believers together as the “people of the Book.”

Just a few decades ago, Seventh-day Adventists were especially known to be “the

people of the Book” who believed in the Bible as the sole rule of faith and practice as well as the importance of systematic Bible study and scripture memorisation.

Not only were Seventh-day Adventist Christians expected to know the Scriptures and live by its principles, but they were also expected to be able to defend their beliefs. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, each believer is expected to develop and maintain a personal and dynamic relationship with Jesus and joyfully and confidently share Him with the world.

When the Bible Feels Like Homework Let’s be honest. For many of us, opening the Bible during the week can feel like one more item on the list. We attend Sabbath school, we review the quarterly lessons, we discuss a few questions, listen to the sermon … and then resume our regular lives. The Bible stays closed until next Sabbath.

It’s not that we don’t love Jesus. It’s not that we don’t believe the Bible is true. But somewhere between busy schedules, tired minds, and “I’ve heard this before,” Bible study has started to feel

like homework instead of spiritual food. What’s the result? We have a lot of information, but very little transformation. We can quote verses, but our patience at home hasn’t changed. We know what the Bible says about surrender, but when God asks for our “cup,” we struggle to pray “Your will be done.”

Jesus understood this struggle. On the night before the cross, He took His disciples to Gethsemane (see Matt. 26:36–44). Rather than lecture them, He invited them to watch and pray with Him. Three times He surrendered to His Father, praying, “Not as I will, but as you will” (Matt. 26:39, NIV). This is discipleship: not merely knowing God’s will but choosing to follow it. God wants bible study to transform us—to shape our character, bear fruit in our lives, and lead us to obedience.

That is why we are introducing Bible Study for Discipleship. Using FORM—a cooperative learning structure based on Focus, Observe, Reflect, and Move—we can study Matthew 26:36–44 together.

Our goal is not simply to gain more knowledge, but to ask, “Lord, what are You asking me to do this week?” My prayer for the Alberta Conference is that Bible study will no longer feel like a duty, but like meeting Jesus in the garden again. May we leave not only with notes, but with a step toward obedience. When God’s Word meets a willing heart—even a tired one—transformation begins.

We can all read the Bible and still feel spiritually stuck. We know more verses, we’ve heard more sermons, but we still react in anger, worry more than we pray, and struggle to love people. The problem isn’t the Bible. The problem is often how we apply it.

Spiritual maturity isn’t measured by how many chapters you’ve read. Hebrews 5:14 says mature believers are those “who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil” (NIV). God gave us His Word not just to inform us, but to form us into the likeness of Christ. Ephesians 4:13 calls this “mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ” (ESV).

If that’s the goal, then we need a way of studying Scripture that moves us from knowledge to Christlike character. You don’t need a theology degree to grow spiritually. You need a repeatable rhythm. Try the FORM structure with any passage; it is a simple path forward.

THE FORM STRUCTURE FOCUS ON GOD Before you read the Bible, pray: “Spirit, show me who you are in this text.” Maturity starts with seeing Christ, not just seeing principles. Ask, “What does this passage show me about God’s character?”

OBSERVE THE TEXT Read it twice, slowly. What stands out? What is repeated?

Are there commands, warnings, or promises?

Don’t jump to “What does this mean to me?” First, ask yourself, “What did it mean to the original hearers?”

REFLECT ON YOURSELF Now the hard part. Ask: “Where am I immature in this area?” James 1:22 warns us not to be hearers who forget, but doers. For example, if the passage is about forgiveness, ask “Where am I holding bitterness?” If it’s about generosity, ask “What am I holding onto too tightly?”

MOVE IN OBEDIENCE Maturity is proven in action.

Finish by writing down one specific step you will take in the next seven days. Then pray it back to God. “Father, help me to do ... because [fill in the Bible verse].” This structure works because it forces the Word to move from your head to your hands. We are to practice what we preach and teach.

Putting it into Practice Christian maturity shows up in three places: character, relationships, and obedience.

After you are done studying, take the following steps:

To remain faithful in studying God’s Word, believers must treat it as essential daily spiritual nourishment, set aside a regular time for Bible study, and prepare their hearts through prayer.

Their daily, careful study led to conviction and growth. I saw this in my own life with Matthew 18. I had read about forgiveness for years but stayed bitter toward someone. When I used the “Move” step, I

Cooperative learning is not simply a teaching technique; it is a tool for discipleship.

When used in small group Bible study, it creates an environment where the Word is understood, the Spirit is welcomed, and obedience is supported. For the Alberta Conference, adopting cooperative learning in Bible study can help shift our culture from

information gathering to spiritual transformation. It is a return to how Jesus made disciples: together, in the Word, and in obedience.

Five Strategies for Effective Cooperative Learning Groups of three or four may be ideal for cooperative learning. Cooperative learning in Bible study replaces passive listening with active, mutual engagement. This requires both individual accountability and positive interdependence; these methods deepen spiritual comprehension, encourage diverse perspectives, and build community.

1. The Jigsaw Break a long passage or overarching theme (e.g. the fruits of the Spirit or the sanctuary) into smaller chunks.

Process: Divide participants into “home groups” of three to four people and assign each member a specific text or topic to master.

Action: Members leave their home groups to form “expert groups” with individuals who share their same assigned topic. Together they study the context and discuss teaching points.

Result: They return to their home groups to teach their newly acquired insights to the rest of the team.

2. Think-Pair-Share An excellent tool for introverted participants or those who need time to process complex theological concepts.

Process: The study leader poses a broad, open-ended question about the scripture.

Action: Participants reflect quietly for 1–2 minutes, formulate their thoughts, and then turn to a partner to discuss.

Result: After a few minutes, pairs share the highlights of their conversation with the entire group, ensuring broader total participation without putting anyone on the spot.

3. Numbered Heads Together A great strategy to keep everyone accountable for assigned reading and to foster equal participation.

Process: Count off group members (e.g. 1, 2, 3, or 4). Give the entire group a specific task, such as outlining the sequence of events in a Gospel chapter or biblical subject.

Action: Have the groups “put their heads together” to discuss and agree on the correct answer, ensuring everyone knows the answer so they can respond if called upon.

Result: Call a random number (e.g. “All number 2s stand and answer). This promotes equal participation and mutual accountability.

4. Round Robin This strategy boosts engagement and accountability. It relies on oral, turnbased sharing.

Process: The leader poses an open-ended question; participants form small groups (three to four people) and are given 1–3 minutes to think about their answers. One at a time, each person shares their idea out loud while group members listen.

Action: Participants take turns going in a circular order until the leader calls time or the ideas are exhausted. Teammates may pass if they do not have an answer, but they are encouraged to contribute their unique ideas.

Result: Each participant participates and contributes to the group’s collective understanding. It allows the facilitator to quickly assess prior knowledge, identify trends, and brainstorm solutions.

Pray for Your Pastor W

hat does your prayer list look like? Maybe your spouse, your kids and grandkids, friends and family, church members or neighbours facing illnesses or other difficult situations— am I close? How about your pastor? Is he or she on your prayer list regularly?

Pastors carry heavy burdens; they fight spiritual battles on a daily basis, not just for themselves but every member of their congregation. As the apostle Paul put it, “I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. Apart from such external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all the churches” (2 Cor. 11:27-28, NASB).

They carry these burdens with

love, but not without cost. Ministry is taxing on many aspects of their life and it is up to us to lift up our pastors in spiritual support. One of the enemy’s tactics is to attack our pastors where thy are weakest. We can join this battle by praying for specific things, so here are a few ways you can pray for your pastor:

For Family

“A church leader must be a man whose life is above reproach. He must be faithful to his wife. … He must manage his own family well, having children who respect and obey him.

For if a man cannot manage his own household, how can he take care of God’s church?” (1 Tim. 3:2, 4-5, NLT).

“Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Faithful are the wounds of a friend; profuse are the kisses of an enemy” (Prov. 27:5-6, ESV). So much of what pastors deal with on a regular basis are confidential matters, and the honest truth is that they cannot befriend their church members in a way that would betray confidentiality or impartiality.

Pastors need trusted advisors and confidants who can tell them the truth. Let’s pray that our pastors form meaningful support networks to help them grapple with the weight of ministry.

For Wisdom

“But anyone who needs wisdom should ask God, whose very nature is to give to everyone without a second thought, without keeping score. Wisdom will certainly be given to those who ask” (Jas 1:5, CEB). Pastors

“Let’s not become discouraged in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not become weary” (Gal. 6:9, NASB). Frequent long nights and high-stress situations can take a heavy physical and emotional toll on a pastor that can lead to burnout. Let’s pray for our pastors’ physical and mental health so that they can maintain healthy and sustainable ministries.

For Encouragement

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other” (1 Thess. 5:11-13, NIV). Many of us know the Bible verse, “Encourage one another and build each other up,” but not many read past that to the following two verses. We are to acknowledge our spiritual leaders and hold them in highest regard. In fact, one 46 Alberta Adventist News

translation reads, “Recognize the value of those who work hard among you … Show them the highest respect and love because of the work they do” (vv. 12-13, ERV). Being a pastor is hard enough, let’s help them by praying for them and encouraging them instead of arguing or sowing discord.

For Protection

“‘No weapon formed against you will succeed, and you will refute any accusation raised against you in court. This is the heritage of the Lord’s servants, and their vindication is from me.’ This is the Lord’s declaration” (Isa. 54:17, CSB).

We know that the devil “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Pet. 5:8, ESV) and nothing would please him more than to cause the downfall of a

spiritual leader. Let’s pray for our pastors that they may remain under God’s protection.

The next time you speak to your pastor, how about asking if you can pray over them? “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace” (Num. 6:24-26, ESV).

ESFIL Reaps the Harvest T

he Edmonton South Filipino-International Seventh-day Adventist Church (ESFIL) celebrated God’s goodness as they witnessed the fruits of their labour with Jesus. ESFIL saw two people choose Christ through baptism in June and three more in August. Aniceto “Seth” Braza III, the Bible worker and servant-leader of ESFIL Company, prayerfully nurtured the candidates through regular visitations and Bible studies. When the invitation was made for them to accept Jesus into their hearts, they readily gave their affirmative replies and showed their excitement to be a part of God’s kingdom. Three more people are being prepared for baptisms later this year.

ESFIL shares in the mission of the church and in translating the great Gospel Commission (to teach, make disciples, and baptise) into action. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Service Beyond the Church Doors

M

erle Warnock is a busy lady. For years, she has invested her own time and money to visit to people in need—homebound church members, hospital patients, care home residents, and incarcerated individuals—oftentimes with gift cards, fruit baskets, or a home-cooked meal.

Merle has also made a habit of bringing warm clothing, pocket-sized copies of Steps to Christ, water, and hot pizza to individuals experiencing homelessness in downtown Edmonton. She has a sincere passion for people, investing time in nurturing relationships, and showing interest in their stories, disappointments, and setbacks.

I accompanied Merle on one such Beyond the Church Doors trip to visit her unhoused friends and had a few questions about her ministry.

Ina: How did you become involved in this kind of ministry?

a place where I could pre-order a large amount of pizza, bottled water, and drinks for my street friends—not just on my birthday but at least once a month—at a reasonable price.

Merle: It was on my birthday back in January 2015. I decided to drive downtown and purchase some hamburgers for people in need. Unfortunately, January is cold so not very many people would be outside, and buying hamburgers would be very expensive.

I realized that I would not have been able to make as much impact as I would have liked.

I: Were you able to accomplish your goals as you had planned?

I: So what did you decide to do at that moment?

M: As I was driving and gathering my thoughts, the Lord spoke to me very clearly about finding

M: Oh yes, the Lord did provide and I have been doing this consistently ever since. It is amazing how God can navigate a situation to benefit His children and for His glory.

Whenever I visit this location, I give God the praise and the glory for blessing me so that I can, in turn, share His blessing with those in need. I can see the joy and appreciation

on their faces every time I visit. As humans, we have the capacity to care because God made us that way, but oftentimes, when it comes to supporting those outside of our circles, we are reluctant to do so.

I: I noticed that on some occasions, you also carry personal items such as clothing, shoes, and socks in your car. Why?

he Mirror Seventh-day Adventist Church has a problem—a very good problem. They have been experiencing growing pains with their existing church building. As such, the church, under the leadership of Pastor Ted Deer, has undergone a building extension project. Dean Collier, who has been extensively involved with the construction, shared the following progress photos from this summer. We praise God for His mighty work in the Mirror congregation.

M: Oftentimes, my street friends may need a clean set of clothing, and in that case, I can meet their needs immediately.

I: Have you ever thought about the number of people in our city that are experiencing homelessness and what else can we do as a church community to help those less fortunate?

M: The last time I did my research, there were about 5,000 people experiencing homelessness in Edmonton. But I believe it starts with each person as we go about our daily lives, asking ourselves, “What I can do to help someone who is in need?” Helping others is not confined to our church family, we need to go and do as Jesus did—building relationships with kindness and compassion with all of God’s children.

When we do so, we are pointing them to God and doing what He has asked us to do.

Baby Dedication at Edmonton Central Seventh-day Adventist Church

A

baby dedication is a great opportunity for parents to thank God for the child He has placed in their care. It is not only a celebration, but also a time when parents commit to raising their child in God’s guidance and wisdom, while giving their child back to Him. Accompanied by family, friends, and church family, Shiney Daniel Singh shared her courageous story through joyful tears of how God has blessed her and her husband, Abhishek, with baby Zion.

Shiney shared a deeply personal experience of how God answered her endless prayers as she unquestioningly trusted in Him. She said, “I have waited many, many years for this moment, and now that it’s here, it feels so surreal to me.” After many years of praying and waiting for a child, Shiney testifies, “God’s leading in our lives has been nothing short of a miracle, and I am taking this opportunity to be a living witness for him.

We have learned what it means to trust God through many tears and unanswered questions, but He reminded me time and again that He was in control. Today I can say with a grateful heart that God heard my prayer. I shared my testimony not only to celebrate our blessing, but to encourage others to trust in God.”

As I listened to Shiney’s remarkable testimony, I thought about how Hannah’s parenting journey began with similar desperation and unfiltered prayer, as she poured out her soul to God. Her story begins with deep sorrow and unfulfilled longing in 1 Samuel 1:6-10. She carried the heavy burden of barrenness. This story reminds us that God sees our tears even in our deepest weakness. Pastor David Hamstra, who officiated the dedication service, welcomed baby Zion to the church family, followed by a prayer of dedication for the family, petitioning God to continue to pour out His blessings on the family.

fter the success of last year’s evangelistic campaign with Pastor Bill Santos of Hope Channel Canada, the Strathmore Seventh-day Adventist Company wanted to keep the progress going. They voted to hold an outreach event, and thus began three months of planning culminating in “Joy in the Park” on Sabbath, August 8.

Joy in the Park is a free gospel music festival and picnic in the park held at Kinsmen Amphitheatre. The Strathmore Company was joined by sister Calgary-area churches, House of Hope, Bridgeland, Garden Road, Cornerstone, and Airdrie, in both artists and attendees.

Despite an unpleasant forecast, the outdoor concert enjoyed perfect weather throughout the afternoon. Attendees were delighted by the talented singers and complimentary

Strathmore’s Gospel Music Festival, “Joy in the Park,” brought live gospel music, worship, family activities and community together at the Kinsmen Amphitheatre on Aug. 8.

How To Rely on God

O

ne of the most exciting things about God’s presence in our lives is experiencing the joy it brings, knowing that we can rely on Him without

He mentioned that, as human beings, we make promises to ourselves and others, but we often find ourselves unable to keep them. We have trouble with our commitments to each other. But how can we actually rely on God? He emphasized that we need to take a different stand, a different approach, a different

Yellowknife Community Outreach and Youth Ministry Weekend

T

he Yellowknife Seventh-day Adventist Church recently celebrated a weekend of community outreach and youth ministry to kick off its Vacation Bible School summer camp.

On Sabbath, June 27, three young people committed their lives to God through baptism, signifying spiritual renewal and formal membership within the church body.

The next day, the church hosted its public health and wellness initiative, the YK Family Fun Walk, aimed at raising local awareness for diabetes prevention and management. Despite an uncharacteristic and severe heat spell in the region, proactive monitoring and

Following the weekend’s public initiatives, the church officially launched its annual Vacation Bible School (VBS) Summer Camp.

The program opened with strong enrollment, securing a robust cohort of local children for the week’s interactive educational and recreational curriculum. Notably, a segment of the registered children had also participated in the Family Fun Walk the previous day. This overlap suggests that the public health campaign served as an effective touchpoint, successfully motivating families to engage further with the church’s subsequent youth programming.

s another school year draws to a close, the Chinook Winds Adventist Academy (CWAA) family finds itself standing at a meaningful intersection of gratitude and anticipation. This year has been marked by growth, challenge, achievement, and God’s unmistakable faithfulness. Through every chapel, classroom lesson, concert, athletic event, service project, and quiet moments of student support, our school has continued its mission of engaging students to follow God completely, act unselfishly, and achieve excellence.

The true strength of a school is not found in its buildings or programs, but in the people who show up each day to invest in the lives of young people.

As we look ahead to the 2026-27 school year, we are pleased to welcome Lee Richards as Principal and Sandra Dodds as Music

Teacher. Their appointments bring a wealth of experience, proven leadership, and deep commitment to Adventist Christian education. Mr. Richards joins CWAA after more than four decades of service in Adventist education across Canada.

His leadership philosophy is rooted in service, integrity, and building strong school communities where students can flourish academically, socially, and spiritually.

each day to invest in the lives of young people. Teachers, educational assistants, office staff, support staff, coaches, volunteers, pastors, and parents have collectively contributed to a school culture that seeks to reflect the love of Christ in practical and meaningful ways.

Throughout the year, students have been challenged to discover their gifts, deepen their faith, serve their communities, and pursue excellence. Behind each of those opportunities stands a team of dedicated adults who believe deeply in the transformative power of Adventist education.

As we prepare for a new chapter, we do so with confidence that God continues to guide this school. We celebrate the foundation laid by those who have served faithfully; we welcome those who are joining our community. IN MEMORY

A Legacy of Service:

A Life Well-Lived Faithfully to God Ewald Wutzke

July 22, 1930 ~ September 8, 2025 (Age 95 years)

E

wald Wutzke was born in Volhynia, Poland, on July 22, 1930. In 1953, Ewald immigrated to Canada.

He was introduced to a young lady named Erna Stobert and they married in 1960. During their courtship, the couple was introduced to the Seventh-day Adventist faith.

Their trust and belief in God grew quickly, and in 1961 they were both baptized.

The Adventist faith and the Edmonton Central Seventh-day Adventist Church were very important to this couple, and they lived their lives in service to others.

Ewald and Erna lived their lives faithfully to God from 1957 until their passings.

Erna was exceptional at baking and quilting and supported the church’s community service department

with these skills. Erna passed to her rest on February 3, 2021.

For many years, Ewald was part of the maintenance team at Edmonton Central, where he was dependable and dedicated to whatever task needed to be completed. He not only taught maintenance to those who worked with him, but by his example, he taught that dedication is your most valuable asset. On September 8, 2025, Papa Wutzke—as he was passionately called by those who knew him well— closed his eyes to rest until Jesus comes.

Ewald is lovingly remembered by his children, Karl Jentsch, Brigitte Johnson, Rita (Scott) Helwig, and Richard (Debra Urban) Wutzke, as well as numerous relatives and friends. He was blessed with seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The Alberta Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church seeks a qualified Associate Treasurer for Education to provide financial leadership, oversight, and support for the Alberta Conference School Division. Responsibilities include overseeing school financial operations (statements, budgets, reconciliations, year-end procedures), coordinating internal and external audits, and supporting Business Managers, administrators, boards, and finance committees.

The role manages annual budgeting and Alberta Education funding and reporting, administers government grants, transportation funding, tax and donation receipts, and ensures compliance with CRA, Alberta Education, GST, T3010, and other financial requirements. It also supports financial systems (including Sage, ChurchPal, and Rycor), banking administration, grant applications, and related education bookkeeping.

Qualifications: a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (or related field); CPA designation or progress is an asset; relevant experience in accounting, auditing, budgeting, and school finance; strong knowledge of reporting, internal controls, and regulatory compliance; proficiency with Sage and Microsoft Excel; excellent analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills; high accuracy, confidentiality, and integrity; collaborative approach; and good standing with the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The Maintenance Assistant plays a vital role in keeping our university campus safe, functional and visually appealing. Working under the direction of the Facility Maintenance Director and the Operations Support supervisor, this role assists with general repairs, preventive maintenance, and routine upkeep across multiple campus buildings including residence halls and academic facilities. This is a dynamic, hands-on role ideal for a handy individual who enjoys variety, team collaboration, and contributing to a thriving educational environment.
