Editor’s Note Over the last year I have discovered some alarming facts; not only is the number of Christian books being sold still in decline, but when a Christian bookshop closes very little of its sales are picked up by nearby bookshops - possibly up to 95% is lost. A recent Evangelical Alliance survey on Bible reading reported that people under 44 years old read the Bible on average 40% less than people over 44 years old (I would suspect a survey on the reading of Christian books would be even more telling!). And when discussing all this with the Right Revd.

John Pritchard, the former Bishop of Oxford, he stated that he believes many Christians are now ‘religiously illiterate’! If the church is not reading Christian books it is missing out on a rich vein of spiritual knowledge and information to help us understand what we believe and why.

So what does this all mean for us in our bookshop ministry?

For me it has been both releasing and exciting that the decline of the Christian Bookshop is not inevitable.

Yes, the market has changed. Many of us have to accept the collapse of sales from Sunday School prize-giving, the decline of church hymnbook sales as churches move to the big screen, and the gradual end of many regular church bookstalls.

The challenge ahead for all of us in Christian retailing is to help the church to rediscover the value of Christian books. We want to dispel the myth that it is always cheaper and quicker to buy books on-line rather than from your Christian bookshop (we can often give a quicker and better service). We are also working to encourage church leaders to regularly recommend books when they preach, and to consider having suggested books to read with each teaching series. I believe that people are hungry to be fed but do not know what to read. When books are recommended, people buy them, read them and lives are changed.

Be encouraged - the end is NOT inevitable. BOOKS DO CHANGE LIVES! So when you’re making choices about what gifts will most bless your loved ones this Christmas, why not reject the socks and the bubble bath, and choose something to encourage, inspire, challenge, grow… Choose a Christian book!

Canon Andrew White is something of a legend: a man of great charm and energy, whose personal suffering has not deflected him from his important ministry of reconciliation.

In 2014, he was voted No. 1 in a poll of the top 100 most influential UK Christians. St Andrew’s met up with him ahead of his upcoming UK tour to promote his new book, My Journey So Far. What is the situation in Iraq; are you able to go back?

Yes, I still go to Iraq. I need to go there to continue the reconciliation work because if I don’t do it who can? There are others that can do the relief work but reconciliation work is very complex.

With the rise of current terrorism and Islamic State we’re facing some tough challenges. We are experiencing an extreme increase of radicalism in a way that we have never known it before.

You once invited someone from Islamic State to dinner didn’t you?

Yes, they said they would come but that they would cut my head off. I decided to cancel that appointment!

Where are you based?

I spend most of my time between Israel and Jordan helping Iraqi refugees. I spend an awful lot of time on aeroplanes – I joke that my address is BA Seat 1D.

with Andrew White What relief work are you involved with?

We look after the refugees that have fled from Iraq and we work in Iraq, Jordan and Kurdistan. Our primary concern is in four main areas: education, health, relief and housing. We help thousands of people; we are actually housing 450 families.

In Jordan we run a major housing relief project and took over a hotel in Madaba.

It started with a group of six families: they were living in a hovel – no toilet or bathroom; just a room divided by curtains.

They would take turns so that they could have a shower once a week – if you can imagine the heat, you might be able to imagine the smell.

Last year, we arranged a groundbreaking meeting: we had the Ayatollah from the Sunnis; the Ayatollah from the Shias; Saddam Hussein’s Iman and three Chief Rabbis. We had 24-hour prayer cover in the room directly above the meeting room – the whole thing was soaked in prayer, it was amazing. At the end of the meeting one of the Chief Rabbis said, “I have only three words to say, fear is cancelled.” One of the Ayatollahs said, “I came here hating the Jews. heard your stories. I now love you.” This would never have happened without the reconciliation work that we do. We don’t take care; we take risks!

You see a lot of miraculous things happening don’t you?

Yes, we’ve had seven resurrections; we’ve seen lots of angels; and we’ve seen many appearances of the Lord Jesus. You’ll have to come to the events to hear more about that.

Will you be signing books with your famous pen?

Yes, of course! It’s the pen that I lent to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. He subsequently signed Saddam Hussein’s death warrant with it! I have to go and get it right now actually. I’m really worried about it. It’s at the Burlington Arcade and I’ve been without it for 3 weeks; it had to go to Germany to be fixed. I’m pen-less, it’s terrible!

Tom Hillingthwaite’s Guide to Christmas: 5 Festive Tips.

We need to put the Christ back into Christmas. This is merely a metaphorical proposition, of course, and not a linguistic one. Some people take it too literally and end up spelling it ChristChristmas, or ChristmasChrist, or ChristmChristas. This is wrong. Anyway, here are my top tips for a Happy Hillingthwaite Yuletide.

1) Christmas music is the worst and should be incinerated post haste. The Bible talks about the only unforgiveable sin being that of blaspheming the Holy Spirit – but that was before Noddy Holder was born. If I’m right, some of the later Gnostic Gospels mention both Slade and Shakin’ Stevens, and so I like to buy up as much stock as I can and set it ablaze like a makeshift yule log.

2) Save money if you have young children by buying them things that you, personally, need for the house. For her second Christmas our daughter Amy received two stairgates – one for the top of the stairs and one for the bottom. And frankly she was delighted – she used to play in there for hours.

3) Avoid board games: they are fascist inventions and socially divisive. We invited our elderly neighbour Anne round to play Monopoly last year, only to discover that all our board games are supposedly ‘Suitable for ages 8-80.’ Well, Anne is 82!! We had to send her home, distraught.

4) It’s important that any myths surrounding Father Christmas are decisively debunked early in a child’s life, in order to spare them from upset further down the line. I speak from experience: when I was 10 and still credulous in all things Santa, I went searching for presents and found a Father Christmas outfit in my Dad’s wardrobe, which obviously stopped me believing. I later looked in my Mum’s wardrobe, and stopped believing in nurses and Catwoman.
