Dear Friends, What a year of celebration our nation has seen! And as much as we enjoy looking back through regal festivities and sporting triumphs, we can also look forward to the special time of year when we rejoice in an event that was one of the most significant moments in all history, Jesus come down to live amongst us.

This is a great time to refocus on God’s great love for us, shown in this and so many other ways, and to respond with our lives. We really believe that Christian resources have a role to play so we’re pleased to bring you another great range of products this Christmas; gifts ideas to encourage and to entertain, to inform and to inspire. Our attention has been caught by ‘Cross Roads’, the new fiction title from WM Paul Young, author of ‘The Shack’ and by gifted teacher Francis Chan’s new offering ‘Multiply’. Blessing others through a Church bookstall...

Recently, Gay Beattie from Gold Hill Baptist Church shared with us about the exciting ways they’ve been able to bless their local community through funds raised at their church bookstall.

Since 2010 they’ve given away books to a total of nine schools, encouraging children of all ages with NCV Bibles, Christians books for their libraries and books to support RE teaching and assemblies. One school librarian was overwhelmed that anyone would GIVE such lovely books!

This year they have also been able to bless a group of African pastors and give 50 Sports Good News Bibles to The Mount Prison, presenting them at a Sunday service where they were eagerly accepted. The four Gold Hill representatives were greatly encouraged by this experience and, as they continue to use all their profits to ‘give away the Good news in book form’, it’s exciting to think how God will continue to change lives through this work.

If you would like to raise money for a charity, a mission, or a building project, or if you would like to give Christian resources to local schools, libraries, prisons and community groups, then please do get in touch.

You may want to establish a regular bookshop at your church or to hold a one-off bookstall at an event such as a Christmas fayre, whatever your ideas we’d love to partner with you and support you in seeing them realised, so do talk to our staff in store or get in contact with us by phone or email.

Christmas has to be the most difficult time of the year to be a comedian. Some of the secular gigs I do tend to be full of people so drunk they get you confused with a nativity play and shout things like ‘Where’s baby Jesus?!’ or ‘Are you Balthazar?’ Conversely, the church gigs are populated by folks with an unquenchable need to plough through the Cliff Richard festive back-catalogue. Either way, it’s difficult to get a word in.

My favourite part of the build-up to Christmas is listening to all the men at carol services trying to get their voices around Once in Royal David’s City.

To get anywhere near the right pitch for the end of the verse, you need to hit the first line pretty much like Brian Blessed. Invariably, every year us blokes forget this, and by the time we get to ‘Mary was that mother mild’ dogs are starting to bark, and by ‘Jesus Christ, the little child,’ eardrums have burst and relationships broken down.

I love board games at Christmas. Risk is my favourite – that military strategy one where you invade other countries. We can’t play it in our household, sadly, because we’re all Christians. You can’t play Risk with Christians. We just keep sending in missionaries and aid packages, or trying to smuggle bibles over the border.

This Christmas promises to be a good one, because I’ve just been given the lead in a film. I play a dog-walker. Lead? Dog-walker? I think I may just have found my way into a 2013 Christmas cracker with that joke!
