The MFA Fashion Design students from the School of Fashion at Academy of Art University displayed their latest collections in a catwalk show at New York Fashion Week.

Christopher Cabalona’s A Refined Fool collection is inspired by the clowns of the early 1900s, taking the fun and quirky elements of clown costuming and adding structure and sophistication.

Using crimson, lemon yellow, flamingo pink and indigo silk, organza and cotton canvas, Mariana Gorey’s womenswear collection is a reflection on the designer’s experience of struggling with dyslexia while attending school in France, and the methods she used to cope.

The Fearless Rider collection by Ying Jin was inspired by the sight of young children riding horses in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Pieces in the collection combine the functional aspects of horse riding gear and adds volume and sophisticated detailing.

Abby Yang/ Christopher Cabalona/ Yue Shen and Mingyan Zhang The empowered and comfortable woman is the muse for Hanbit Ku’s collection of functional wool, jersey and silk charmeuse pieces. Ku adds zippers to the garment to allow the wearer to change the weight of the piece and alter its shape to better suit their figure.

Chelsea Grays wanted to document the experiences of homeless people living in San Francisco through her mixed media collection. While researching the lives of the predominantly male homeless community in the Tenderloin area of the city, Grays noticed similarities between them and artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. “His work reflects a street kid’s fashion sensibility as an indirect result of his lack of steady resources. Basquiat’s’ way of expression went beyond his paintings, it involved his clothing as well,” she says. The

collection features mix and match prints, upcycled fabric and pieces constructed from scraps.

Yi Pan’s Protect the Anomalous collection is made specifically for wearers with diverse abilities or whose bodies are considered ‘different’ by mainstream fashion. Pan uses silk taffeta and a gentle pastel palette in the collection, which features oversized proportions that comfort and shield the wearer.

Mingyan Zhang and Yue Sen collaborated on the Coming Out of Your Shell collection which explores the transformation of women. The pair created a collection that plays with strength and vulnerability, layering rigid, heavily structured pieces over one another, only exposing the hems and necklines of pieces beneath.

Yaryna Zhuk’s collection aims to be as eco-friendly as possible by collecting and combining scraps of fabric to produce her own textile, reducing waste in the process.

Qing Guo’s collection celebrates a life of attending lantern festivals. Guo’s garments are constructed using techniques inspired by paper lanterns, resulting in collapsible sleeves, lantern motifs on the back of jackets and pleats.

Love Is Not Kind by Abby Yang is based on the designer’s research into non verbal communication through hand gestures. The collection is inspired by the shapes of hands making or performing loving gestures. Yang stuffs fabric with cotton to create hand-like shapes which are placed, bouquet-like, on the garments.
