You are invited to AAU’s Open House & Hangar Party Two years ago the National Agricultural Aviation Association held its annual convention in Savannah, Georgia for the first time. This presented an opportunity for AgAir Update to host its first-ever Open House and Hangar Party. The party was a huge success.

Over the months that followed, I received many favorable comments about the party and even more comments from those who did not attend with their regrets, wishing they had been there. Well, 2012 is upon us, and the NAAA convention will again be in Savannah and likewise, AgAir Update will host its second Open House and Hangar Party in Perry, Georgia.

AAU’s party will be Friday, November 30. This will allow plenty of time for those attending the convention to travel to Savannah for NAAA events, or visit the beautiful state of Georgia before the convention.

AAU’s party will start at 3:00 p.m. on Friday with aircraft demonstrations and end before midnight with the band stopping at 10:00 p.m.. Food and drink will begin at 6 p.m. This year we will have a repeat of personal friend and famous, competing barbecue chef, Danny Evans and his crew preparing the food.

Expect some of the world’s best barbecue, along with appetizing boiled peanuts before the meal. You Yanks have got to try them!

This will be an excellent time to get a hands-on look (literally) of the ag-aircraft that will be in the exhibit hall in Savannah. Of course, the arrival of the aircraft is weather dependent.

Regardless of the weather, there’s going to be one heck of a grand, southern-style hangar party at the offices of AgAir Update on the airport in Perry, Georgia (KPXE). Drive or fly (discount fuel on already cheap fuel prices), if needed there will be chauffeurs to take you to the hotel in your vehicle or one of ours.

The host hotel is the Hampton Inn in Perry. There are over 2,000 hotel rooms in Perry, but don’t count on them all being available or desirable. agair mail comment I’d like to comment on Tracy Thurman’s, “Out on a limb” article. I greatly appreciate Tracy’s candor in sharing this story.

Most military pilots are type “A” persons, very self-confident, they like to be in charge and have fairly large egos; they don’t like to make mistakes and some don’t like to admit to them. As a junior pilot coming up through the ranks, the senior pilots I admired and respected the most were the ones who openly shared every grueling detail of their worst mistakes in the air. Some of these guys were decorated, seasoned combat veterans of the first Gulf War and some of their mistakes put themselves, their aircraft, their wingman or friendly troops on the ground in danger, yet they eagerly shared their stories. They did this for one reason, to make us junior pilots better, to prevent us from learning a lesson the hard way.

As for Tracy’s article (October 2012), we talked about it beforehand. He was pretty “down” about the whole event and rightly so, who wouldn’t be? Aviation accidents can happen to anyone, especially with ag-flying. For him to write about it, hopefully will cause readers to pause and think and fly safer because of it.

In ag-aviation, there is always challenges, many that come and go, e.g. fuel costs, irate customer, maintenance issues, etc. However, flying safe is a challenge that is always with us from the time we sep foot on the airfield until we leave.—Bill

Recently, I had a bad experience with foam. I would like to tell you about it and maybe it will help other pilots in the future.

I loaded our AT-402B hopper full with a mixture of four components for a herbicide application. We don’t normally apply herbicides, so this was an unusual tank mix.

I took off and after I leveled the aircraft I started the spray pump to agitate the mix with the return system. In two seconds, the hopper

was like a champaign bottle with wings! The contents were wetting my windscreen and the side windows were covered, too. My flight became IFR! I only had two instruments on board for this kind of flight, a turn and bank indicator and an altimeter. The wiper could not remove all of the “champaign” foam, even using all of the wiper water. The foam kept coming.

This situation lasted for two minutes before it stopped. After that, the only place I could see was where the wiper had passed. I had to return to the air strip and land with 400 gallons in the hopper (For sure, this was the easy part!). Three important things saved me; my Commercial Pilot License with an Instrument Rating, the windscreen wiper and water for it.

As for the money... mostly depends on how many acres you cover. AgAir Update recently conducted a survey and the pay scale varies depending on location, abilities and how much the operator is willing to pay. For planning, think about 20%. Hardly ever is there a fixed amount or any guarantees. However, $100 a flight hour would be on the low side. In the beginning, expect to be on the very low side of earnings, probably much

Hello Tom; I’ve known the Orsmonds for many, many years. About 15 or so years ago, after I had visited Ret in Bethlehem, about a year later Ret and I went to Cuba together and then he came by the house for Thanksgiving. They don’t have that in South Africa.

Anyway, I have not heard of any kind of a ag-av trade show being held in South Africa, but George would be sure to know. Have fun when you go over. I got the royal treatment touring most of the country from tip to tip, including a rhino capture via a Puma helicopter, Kruger Park, Drakensburg Mountains, Durban Sharks Board, Cape Town, Table Top Mountain, etc. Lots to see. It was the trip of a lifetime. I’m due a return.—Bill

Helicopters in Iowa

by Bill Lavender It wasn’t too long ago Iowa had few agoperations and even fewer helicopter ag-operations. The arrival of fungicide applications on corn, which Iowa is known for growing on a large scale, set the stage for numerous ag-operations in Iowa to emerge. One of these relatively newly formed operations is Johnson Helicopter Services, owned and operated

by Gary Johnson in Red Oak.

Johnson Helicopter Services with one R44, hiring a pilot to do the flying. This allowed Gary to build the business. In its third year, Johnson Helicopter Services added a second R44. In the fourth year, a Bell 206 Long Ranger was added. During the 2012 season, a fourth contract helicopter was hired to help with the overload of work. A helicopter mechanic is kept on standby to keep the machines in the air.

Five years ago, Gary Johnson was flying corporate aircraft throughout the country. As a professional pilot and a farmer, Gary saw an opportunity to mix his two lifestyles and decided to enter the ag-aviation business. After careful analysis, and due to the geography of southwest Iowa, he formed a helicopter spraying service.

The helicopters are served by four modern nurse rigs with four CDLcertified drivers. The trucks are similar, with automatic transmissions, diesel power and 3,000-gallon water tanks.

Three of the rigs have landing pads mounted on them, while the fourth rig uses the ground for loading ops. Gary notes it is difficult to find good drivers with CDL and hazmat certifications, as well as tanker truck endorsements. The company has a drug testing program in place, as well.

“There weren’t any helicopter companies in Iowa at the time, as far as I knew. It seemed to be the right thing to do. With the short spraying season in Iowa, helicopters also can be dual purpose aircraft during the off season,” explained Gary.

Each truck is outfitted with an iPad where the driver receives maps and loading instructions. The customer, which the majority are co-ops, can track the applications with any Internet accessible d e v i c e . Maps are color-coded to

help the drivers determine the condition of the roads leading to the load site.

The high tech organization of the operation is due much to the efforts of Johnson Helicopter Services’ vicepresident and operations manager, Julian Vasquez. Julian came to work with Johnson Helicopter Services in May 2011. Along with management duties, he arranges scheduling and mapping using Flight Plan Online (www.agrismartis. com), which is also based in Red Oak. The primary crop treated by Johnson Helicopter Services is corn. The first applications start in the beginning of July and continue through most of August. Liquid applications are made using flat fan nozzles, except for one aircraft that is outfitted with the Spectrum Electrostatic System (ES - www.spectrumsprayer. com). The R44 aircraft with flat fan nozzles work a 45-foot swath and carry a 70-gallon load at 85 knots. The Long Ranger has a 60-foot swath and can carry 100-120 gallons at 85 knots.

Mixmate Mixmate is a plug-and-play, mobile blending system designed to mix chemicals or fertilizers in a closed system for both aerial and ground applicators. Mixmate records the amount of each ingredient in every batch providing the necessary information for automated record keeping.

It is Wi-Fi based and is currently in the final stages of developing 3G connectivity to Androids and iPhones.

system in 2011. It requires a pulleydriven pump to develop the needed pressure(80 psi) and volume for the ES booms. Mounted on an R44, the swath is 45 feet spraying at 7580 knots. The ES has worked very well for the last two seasons. There are plans to eventually migrate to the ES for all of Johnson Helicopter Services’ helicopters. Customers that have used ES applications are asking for it again, while others are a bit hesitant to move to the new system. However, time and results will dictate the correct path to take.

Mixmate will custom mix for current conditions. It measures chemicals using a scale-mounted inductor tank with built-in tilt sensors that automatically correct the weight on a slope. Since the density of a chemical only varies a minuscule amount with temperature, an accurate measurement of volume by weight is guaranteed every time. Calibration of the scale is made by pouring an accurately measured five gallons of water into the inductor. This is the only calibration needed to measure any substance weighed by Mixmate.

One of the unique aspects of Mixmate is its ability to record the batch mix. With other methods of mixing chemicals, it is assumed the correct quantity of each chemical has been poured into the mix tank. With Mixmate, not only does it accurately make the prescribed batch, but is also records this data and wirelessly sends the batch records to the base office.

Mixmate will be introduced to the markeplace with a rugged Android tablet that is used to control the system. Android

Mixmate is a versatile system for handling liquid mixes. Also, Agtelligent has in development a venturi component for Mixmate that will measure dry flowables as they are mixed in water. This gives the operator a complete system for accurately mixing loads.

Gary Johnson and Julian Vasquez are not content with just treating crops in Iowa with helicopters and high tech mixing. The diversity of the helicopter becomes evident when you consider there are no known ag-helicopter schools. With Southwest Iowa Community College based in Red Oak, Johnson Helicopter Services recognizes an opportunity to establish a helicopter ag-pilot school. Its development is in the works for this winter season with hopes to Initiate the course in the spring. By coordinating with Southwest Iowa Community College, students could be eligible for scholarships or grants from the Veterans Administration.

It is now nearly four years since the last

life was lost in a fixed wing ag plane and whilst one pilot did die this year in an ag helicopter, that was the first helicopter loss in ten years. Pretty good considering we operate over 200 helicopters in the agricultural role here.

On average, over the last 62 years, we have lost more than two pilots a year in ag planes. To go four years without one is a dramatic turn around and is unprecedented. Even if we were to lose one tomorrow, that four year record still stands.

The New Zealand AAA conference focused on a number of different topics. The partnerships we have with stakeholders, e.g. farmer clients and regulators both environmental and flight safety, best practice, risk management and a strong showing of 20 exhibitors.

NZAAA’s Mission Statement says: NZAAA exists to ensure the sustainability of agricultural aviation in New Zealand by developing and

advocating best practice in both flight safety and environmental safety, promoting professionalism and profitable business, facilitating adoption of best practice programmes by members and stakeholders and engaging in research opportunities.

To facilitate this, the industry last year launched its AIRCARE™ Accreditation Program. The program is an industry led accreditation programme that is based on risk management and has now been embraced by all of the aviation industry except the airlines.

Essentially, AIRCARE™ has three aspects: flight safety, environmental safety and performance standards.

The programme was launched at Parliament on 10th May 2011 and is getting enthusiastic support from aerial operators, regulators and customers with a number of large customers (e.g.

Department of Conservation, Landcorp and others) requiring AIRCARE™ Accreditation as a condition of contract.

Certification was awarded following completion of final flight tests and paperwork review at the company’s plant in Albany, Georgia and it marks the culmination of more than two years work by both Thrush and GE Aviation in concert with the FAA’s regional office in Atlanta.

The aircraft has been highly anticipated by the agricultural aviation industry and with Type Certification work now complete, deliveries of the new Thrush 510G to customers both here in the United States and around the world have begun. Final certification work for the dual cockpit version of the 510G will also get underway shortly. Both the single and the dual cockpit versions of the new aircraft are expected to be extremely popular among agricultural operators and Thrush is gearing up its production planning accordingly.

The GE H80 turboprop engine that powers the Thrush 510G has been one of the most talked about new powerplants in the industry. Initially based upon the well known Walter M601 engine, the new H80 represents a complete rethink by GE Aviation that resulted in a free-turbine design that is lighter, more powerful and more fuel efficient than competitive engines. In addition, the H80 has the ability to produce its fullrated 800 shp at high altitudes and field elevations, even on the hottest of days.

Cleaning the cockpit An Australian ag pilot recently alerted NZAAA to an alarming incident and whilst we have often said that there are no new accidents, this one certainly had the potential.

It seems the Air Tractor was in for maintenance and the engineers used the pilot’s aerosol of Perspex cleaner to give the windows a go and then when finished, instead of returning the can to its usual stowage in the seatback, it was placed under the seat. Next morning was good and frosty and the pilot headed off to work with the cabin heater on full. At 3500’ in the cruise there was a mighty explosion and the pilot’s face was covered in some sort of material that blinded him. He was thinking the worst when he recognised the smell of Perspex cleaner. The aerosol had exploded from the heat, blowing the end out of the can, covering everything

in the cockpit then jamming the can under one rudder pedal.

NAAA board meets in bourbon country The 2012 NAAA fall board meeting was held at The Galt House in Louisville, Kentucky October 12-13th, 2012.

President Mark Hartz called the meeting to order and introduced the membership to Lisa Haller from The Galt House and Mark Barnes from the Convention and Visitors Bureau. Both individuals expressed their gratitude to the organization and their desire to see NAAA return to Louisville. The Allied and Communications committee toured the hotel and convention center and received positive responses.

Negotiations will begin to locate the 2014 convention in Louisville.

President Hartz commended Andrew Moore on his recent receipt of the

Ag Ambassador Award from CropLife America which honors members of the media or allied organizations who have made a major contribution to the education of the public about crop protection and their contribution to a safe, affordable and abundant food supply. (See page 1B in the November 2012 AgAir Update).

Moore then continued with his executive director’s report.

The new PAASS season starts with emphasis on human factors, stall/spins, turning into wind gradients and drift reduction.

Midseason, a new twist to the presentations with electronic tablets will be introduced to the audience for active, real time participation. The 2012 accidents, to date, are down from last year and are currently the lowest on record. Drift claims are down 26% since the inception of PAASS. However, it was noted the drop in accidents could be due to a reduction in acres treated in drought states.

Moore continued with a media communications report, citing the 50th anniversary of Rachel Carson’s book, Silent Spring.

With this comes the negative coverage about crop protection product use. On the contrary, Stanford University published a report citing no additional nutritional value in organic food.

Moore also mentioned a documentary was in the works about ag aviation and the producers involved in the work and their positive pitch for developing the documentary has received the endorsement of the Association.

highlights from committee reports: Communications and Public Relations - A new media relations kit will go to all NAAA members renewing in 2013 and is currently available on the NAAA website. The document is for use to promote ag aviation with the media, public, educators, schoolchildren, and public officials. Restructuring NAAA’s agoperator database with contact info to be publicly available on the website for those who wanted it to be listed was discussed to be used by both members and the public. Ideally, it would be incorporated into forthcoming software updates for the D.C. offices. The idea is still in the formation stage.

Wind tower invoice stuffers are still available for NAAA members free of charge. They come in packs of 100.

Directors were advised of the power of Facebook in that it expands the presence of NAAA outside the membership and into the public eye. Cropdusters United, an Internet forum based inside Facebook, was discussed. It was noted this open forum format was both good and bad. Good information could be made available to and about the industry. However, it also has the potential to portray a negative side of the industry when non-professional posts are made. Directors were advised that negative comments should be addressed.

Directors were also advised to be cautious about photos posted on the Internet. Other groups can glean these photos and use on their web sites, e.g. an environmental group using an agplane spraying with an unacceptable spray pattern.

The NAAA web site can upload individual member’s photos for inclusion on their contact info/profile pages.

Attendance at FFA, Ag in the Classroom and Commodity Classic trade shows will continue with an NAAA booth as in years past. These three shows expose NAAA to thousands. Ag in the Classroom reaches over 95,000 students. NAAA is in need of volunteers to help work these booths. Contact NAAA directly if you are interested.

Constitution and Bylaws - The committee was approached by the WNAAA for clarification on who could serve on a committee, e.g. a WNAAA member who was not an NAAA member. It was

decided per the bylaws, committee members had to be NAAA members. A WNAAA NAAA member category exists.

Convention - The room block in Savannah for the Westin and Hyatt hotels are sold out. The Marriott is adding more rooms to its room block. The committee co-chairs recently toured the Savannah convention center to inspect the new doors and other improvements made specifically for NAAA’s convention. The wider doors are in place, trees have been cleared to improve the landing zone and a road built to ease taxiing to the convention hall. The committee members were very pleased with the changes.

NAAA’s Live and Silent Auctions at its annual convention are the single largest fundraising efforts made by NAAA. It is estimated the current value of the auction items exceeds $300,000.

The committee is viewing different convention facilities as far as 4-5 years into the future. Next year the convention will be in Reno, Nevada. Negotiations will begin with The Galt House and the Louisville Convention Center to have the convention there in 2014. It will return to Savannah in 2015. Committee members are looking for convention site cities that welcome the industry at their hotels, restaurants and convention facilities. 2016’s location is open at this time, although Long Beach, California is a potential candidate. Other sites for 2016 and future years are being considered.

Government Relations - NPDES and The Clean Water Act continue to be major topics of discussion and concern. Already, the committee is learning of operators that are not doing some work due to these concerns. DriftWatch was discussed. There were concerns the information from DriftWatch was not accurate. DriftWatch.org is a web site originally developed by Purdue University to identify sensitive areas and adjacent crops to spray sites.

Museum - Because of fundraising efforts, primarily from the annual NAAHOF Golf Tournament, there is $80,000 in a reserve account with the museum in Jackson. The museum needs updating, e.g. better lighting, updated video loop and demonstrate better the technological changes in the industry.

Committee chair, Brenda Watts, will be meeting with the museum to work towards implementing these updates. Wayne Handley will be inducted into The National Agricultural Aviation Hall of Fame (NAAHOF) this year at the NAAA convention in Savannah.

Research and Technology - The directors were told about the USDA developing projects for the next five years. The committee discussed and expressed concerns over ISO standards. Aerial application was banned in Europe and now there is an attempt to bring it back by using ISO standards certification. It was believed the industry should be involved in this process so the standards would be realistic.

The Brazil tour was called off due to logistical and cost factors.

It will be reevaluated in a different manner for the future, but will not take place in 2012.

Dr. Scott Bretthaur of Illinois will be making a presentation in Savannah during the convention discussing the results of his research into one-gallon versus two-gallon applications.

AIMMS 20 weather systems should begin to be available at an affordable cost for operators, estimated at $20,000, with a pitot-like sensor tube extending from the wing.

spraying safety by improving the pilot’s vision, the FAA will not allow operations below 300 feet and the aircraft has to be certified for NVG use.

The committee brought forward the motion: “Recommend NAAA write a letter of support regarding Bruce Hubler’s efforts and research for use of night vision goggles in night aerial applications operations, emphasizing the safety gained in doing so.”

Safety & Federal Aviation Regulations - So far this year there have been 54 Part 137 accidents (does not consider cherry drying operations under Part 91, which had several accidents) and four fatalities. 70% of the accidents were related to human factors.

Discussion was held in the committee meeting related to Operation Specs from the FAA. Still waiting on a unified clarification. UAVs, the industry should become more involved as they become more of a factor for the industry. Shooting at aircraft is a federal crime, but unless a federal prosecutor can be persuaded to bring charges, not much comes of a shooting event if the local law enforcement official decides to sit on his hands.

NAAREF - NAAREF is a sister organization to NAAA and home of PAASS, Operation SAFE and Compass Rose. NAAREF has produced a 13-minute video on how to participate in an Operation SAFE spray clinic, the best way to prepare aircraft.

The video will soon be posted on the NAAA website.

Updating the Professional Operating Standards (POS) booklet is still in development. It will retain its format and be updated chapter by chapter. A additional chapter may be added covering government regulations. It will incorporate Safety Management Systems (SMS) procedures, which could be as simple as a checklist. SMS is a process to develop a culture within an aviation company where everyone works toward a safer workplace.

WNAAA - The WNAAA will attend multiple state trade shows with the Athena Project, a program that details how to strengthen client and customer relationships. The Association will have a full schedule for women attending the NAAA convention in Savannah. There will be a raffle with 1/3 of the proceeds going to the Athena Project, not to exceed $2,000 and 1/3 to PAASS, not to exceed $2,000. Prizes will include a MacBook, iPad and a Wii. The WNAAA “Ways and Means” booth raises 85% of the Woman's Association’s income. It will be expanding its items to include more men items and custom designed children’s items.

The Association will participate with NAAA at the FFA, Ag in the Classroom and Commodity Classic trade shows.

The meeting went into Executive Session Saturday afternoon, upon which was the last action by the board before the end of the meeting.

at Lobo Landing in Heber Springs, AR. The ladies were ready for an exciting morning of fishing on the Little Red. Dennis Gardisser, and Lynn and Chris Baxter came along to bait some hooks! One of the first items of business was to set up the monetary awards for the first fish, the first to get their limit, and the largest fish.

The competition was tough.

Everyone caught their limit and there was some pretty impressive trout pulled out of the river that day. But it was one trout caught by Brenda Watts that had everybody, including the guide, Mike, really excited. This trout, appropriately named, Moby Dick, was a monster 22 ½ inches long. He was too big to keep, so he had to be let go. Who knows, we may see him again next year. WRK and Garrco are both excited about the opportunity to have so much fun supporting the WAAA of Arkansas.

Drifting into trouble During the early 90s, I was flying an AT-401 out of Swan Lake, Mississippi. We got a call one morning from one of our rice farmers to Stam a 90-acre rice field. I checked the maps and identified the field to be sprayed.

The field was bordered on the west and east by other rice fields belonging to this same farmer and to the south by a “lay-out� field which really was only used for duck hunting when it would be flooded later in the year. To the north was a small scope of woods, maybe 25 yards deep.

Length-ways, it extended beyond both boundaries of the rice field to be Stammed, but immediately on the other side of the woods was a large field with a cotton stand of about three inches in height.

Naturally, the cotton belonged to another farmer and was not one of our regular customers. The DTN indicated the wind to be light and variable and our windsock was hanging like a wet dish rag. Calm winds have always made me a little nervous when doing herbicide work.

After ordering the material, figuring the loads and

working up the strategy for the job, we determined it would be better to do the work from our base, approximately ten miles from the job site. I called the farmer and told him I was a little concerned about the wind, or lack thereof. I would have liked to have had a gentle breeze out of anywhere, as long as it had some northerly component. The farmer expressed that it was near critical that the job be done asap.

I needed the farmer’s assistance and we discussed the coordination strategy. I would lay a line of smoke from east to west along the north edge of the rice to be sprayed. The farmer assured me he would be at the north end of the rice field watching the wind and if it appeared that the smoke was moving towards the woods, he would wave me off and the work would be terminated. I told him I intended to leave a 100-foot buffer between my cut off point and the tree line and that I would be back to spray the buffer as soon as we had a definite wind out of the north. I took all the standard precautions, using only about 20 psi boom pressure and adding a drift control agent to the mixture. Everything went “According to Hoyle.”

After mixing the first load and flying north to the destination rice field, I observed the farmer in position. I laid a line of smoke across the north border of the rice, pulled up and saw that it was not moving. The farmer gave me the OK signal and I laid down the first pass of the east perimeter, flying north and cutting the spray off before beginning the pull-up with at least a 100-foot buffer. The farmer observed the pass and signaled again that everything was a “go.” I made several more passes, releasing a puff of smoke on each pull up and watching the farmer for any signals he may send. After about five or six passes, for some reason I decided to make another east-west run along the north boundary with a line of smoke and sure enough it was slowly moving into the trees. I quit spraying, but it was too late now. I got about 28 acres of

cotton, as I remember. The farmer told me later that it had looked like all the material was settling before it got to the trees and that’s why he never waved me off. Thank God, at least I had left the buffer.

Moral of the story, and I emphasize this to my ag aviation students, a no-wind condition is a very insidious danger.

When flying a herbicide job, a calm wind along with the insistence of the farmer and pressure from the operator and yourself will lull you into trouble. We know in most cases, the farmer for whom you are working, legally speaking, is jointly responsible for any drift damage. So what? What’s that got to do with the fact that you just did something for which only you will be ultimately held responsible. Just like FAR 91.3(a) and 137.39(2) clearly state, the pilot in command is directly responsible for and is the final authority, etc., and furthermore, if the material moves somewhere where it is not supposed to go, then you’re in violation of the label. That’s it.

There is nothing left to say.

It’s a situation we have to live with and adapt to. However, we still have a choice. Pay attention to your gut feelings. We hear that quiet little voice from time to time that says, “Don’t do it.” We have to learn to listen to it and say, “No, I’m sorry, but I can’t do this job right now.” The problem with this situation is there may be another pilot in the same operation, who will do the job, or maybe the farmer will get a pilot from another operator to do the work and in all probability there

won’t be a drift claim when the other pilot does the job. Maybe it will adversely affect your credibility. It will certainly adversely affect your pocketbook!

All you, as a competent and conscientious ag-pilot, can do is make your decisions based on the information you have at the time. In retrospect, I wish I had said something like, “Let’s wait for a little while and see which way the wind starts blowing, ‘cause it’s going to start moving in some direction before too long.”

Hopefully, you are in fact a competent and conscientious ag-pilot. If your customers have been pleased with your work thus far, they shouldn’t leave you. If they do, then maybe it’s for the better, because in the long run, they will be faced with a similar situation again down the road. They will surely try to coerce another pilot into flying when his gut feelings tell him otherwise and this time the other pilot may not be so lucky.

believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to earn your eternal salvation by human effort?” (Galatians 3:1-3). Eternal salvation is a free gift of God, “For by grace you have been saved through faith and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

This is a faith battle; by faith you consider that your old sinful nature was crucified with Jesus Christ and no longer has any power over your life. You have God’s Spirit dwelling within you which gives you the spiritual power to become an instrument of righteousness for Jesus Christ (Romans 6:5-14). When the Holy Spirit is controlling your life you will not fulfill the desires of your sinful nature (Galatians 5:16). God wants you to be blessed by living in constant fellowship with Him—you do this by faith—not by rules!

During this time, Mark Hartz, the 2012 NAAA President, took a break and sat down with AgAir Update to reflect on his year as president of the National Agricultural Aviation Association.

Mark bought Grand Prairie Dusters in partnership with Scott Goetz in 1989. He had flown with another operator, as well as the previous owner of Grand Prairie for six years after graduating from college. Grand Prairie Dusters treats mostly rice with some soybeans; corn is now becoming a major crop treated by air. Mark flies a dual cockpit

Mark had previously served as the chairperson for the Communications and Research and Technology Committees, amongst others over the past couple of decades. He was vicepresident of NAAA in 2011 and its treasurer in 2001/2002.

The NAAA presidency starts with the nomination at the fall NAAA board meeting held in October. The nominated-to-be president decides who he will ask to chair his committees for the upcoming year. He reviews the direction of the Association and sets goals to “keep the train going in the right direction”. The value of the Association’s staff becomes apparent at this time.

Mark comments, “Serving as president, you cannot lose sight of where you’ve

been so as to see where you are going.

You don’t want to ‘fly the same ground twice’”.

During Mark’s presidency, he had high hopes of resolving the NPDES issue.

However, because the farm bill was delayed due to no action from Congress, so was any possibility of putting NPDES to rest, barring a last minute resolution towards the end of a year during a Lame Duck Congress. “[NPDES] was my biggest disappointment during my presidency.

I felt an NPDES exemption law would have the biggest impact on my presidency, but it has not happened.

The NAAA and coalition partners did all that was possible to resolve NPDES and protect our industry from it. However, it simply did not happen due to being held back by inaction from Congress.”

According to Mark, a person has to serve as president to realize all that is involved with the Association. It is overwhelming in the beginning of the term. For Mark,

it was much more than expected, even though he had been involved in the past.

However, Mark says it has to be one of the most rewarding experiences of his flying career.

“I have a strong sense of giving something back to this industry.

Serving as president of NAAA has been the way.”

As the 2012 president, Mark attended and spoke at over a dozen state trade shows. Attending state shows was one of his first actions as president, after selecting chairpersons. It was challenging to formulate an agenda and develop a strategy for his term during this time.

Mark strongly advocates being more proactive about safety amongst fellow ag-pilots. When he sees a safety issue, he makes a point of addressing it. Mark feels everyone should be doing this, particularly with their ag-pilot friends and competitors.

Even though forms of it, like NAAA’s e-newsletter and FaceBook pages are meant to be shared between the Association and our industry, it is still a public forum that is monitored by those who are not directly affiliated with the industry. So far this year, Mark made three trips to Washington, DC, along with several other trips for the Association representing the industry, besides state trade shows. So much can now be done electronically through email and conference calls, the presidency doesn’t require as much travel as it once did. The first trip to Washington was before the spring board meeting to work with the Association's staff and treasurer to put together a budget for a spring board meeting presentation.

In addition, seeing language enacted by Congress requiring the FAA conduct a feasibility study on a database locating low-level towers and obstructions.

• Progress was made in maintaining the aerial label on various chemicals by directly working with the chemical companies and EPA. • Agricultural Research Station (ARS) in College Station was funded again this year. This reiterated the industry’s need for the program there to continue to develop technology for the future of ag-aviation.

• Along with coalition partners, 4G cellular network concerns were worked out preventing the potential of

LightSquared’s technology from interfering with industry GPS signals.

• Worked with FAA over user fees. It is likely a precedent of being exempt in the past will dictate if user fees will affect ag-aviation. It is something that has to be carefully watched.

Mark Hartz has enjoyed his tenure as the 2012 president of NAAA. Even after his term is concluded, he still will advocate for the industry and the Association. “I will go to my grave believing if it was not for NAAA, there would not be an industry today,” concludes Mark.

Concentrate on your cash flow and the calculation of Return on Investment (ROI). Prepare budgets and financial plans for each aircraft in your fleet. Concentrate on projecting cash flow before and after tax for the next five years. If the aircraft is financed, include the interest and principal paid during each year. Include the depreciation that will be claimed on your tax return for each of the upcoming years.

At the completion of your planning process, you should know the after-tax cash flow for the next five years for the continued operation of the aircraft being analyzed. Compare the cash flow of keeping your current aircraft with the cash flow of trading

for a replacement aircraft at different years based upon your projected expenses and out-of-service time for accomplishing major maintenance.

The timing of an aircraft trade or current aircraft improvement decisions can have a significant impact on your after-tax cash flow. Evaluate your situation while there is time remaining to make decisions on equipment changes and performing major improvements on existing equipment before the end of the tax year. Nick: Yes, the engine is burning the same amount of fuel, as long as the throttle and prop levers are not moved. And, yes, the engine will burn more fuel at 30” at a higher altitude as you described. This is assuming no correction with the mixture by leaning.

Suppose our power setting is 28” and 2,200 RPM, assuming this power setting equals 30”/2,000, just for the sake of discussion.

Now, am I to understand the 28”/2,200 will burn less fuel, but develop the same horsepower?

Nick: Exactly. The RPM will not hurt the radial engines, within limits. Technically speaking, you would be better to operate the engine at a higher RPM and a lower manifold setting. Where the problem is, the horsepower may equal, but the aircraft may not necessarily fly the same due to amount of torque being developed by the engine.

The industry has pretty much settled on the 30”/2,050 RPM setting for the best torque/horsepower selection. You can, without any fear, operate your radial at 2,150 RPM and use less manifold pressure. It would depend on the aircraft and the tolerance to noise from the prop.

AAU: I did a test a couple of years ago with our R-1340 Thrush.

We had a spraying contract that was about 180 miles away from our strip. I flew the flight at 25”/1,900 and returned at 30”/2,050. There was no significant wind. I burned the same amount of fuel, within a couple of gallons.

So, I figured the gas I saved with the lower power setting was lost with the extra time Compro Smoker it took to complete the flight.

operate the engine below 25”, the rings can flutter, thereby you should operate above 25” manifold pressure. If you wish to pull the maximum power from the engine with the least effect on it, use the maximum RPM. AAU: Last year on takeoff I blew the number 2 cylinder. The cylinder split from spark hole to spark hole. I dumped, pulled the power back to 20” and made a 180-degree turn and landed. What should I have done with a cylinder failure?

Nick: You were lucky. Anytime you reduce power with a cylinder failure you run the risk of “blowing out the fire”. Ideally, you should have kept the power above the barometric pressure, 30” plus. If you had cracked the cylinder where the crack affected the action of the valves, then reducing the power below barometric pressure, the manifold pressure for that cylinder would have been negative pushing the fuel back in the intake pipes. You could have literally put the fire out or starved the engine of a fuel supply. The whole scenario is a pilot’s decision. The idea is to keep the engine running. You

were at full power. Ideally, you should have pulled the power back to just slightly more than 30” and determined if the engine would keep running.

AAU: Ignorance is bliss. I’ll try to remember that next time. When I operated an R-1820, I would always idle the engine for about a minute to so-call let the scavenger oil pump scavenge the sump. Is this necessary for the R-1340 or R-985?

Nick: I think it is a good idea to allow the engine to “settle” down, maybe not a full minute.

AAU: Since we are talking about oil, let’s dig a little deeper.

Upon starting the engine before it is warmed up, I have seen oil pressure over 100 PSI. Is it true you can blow a blower seal, or any other seal for that matter?

Nick: We can get into a lengthy discussion h e r e . First, the blower seal is not really a seal, but a series of brass rings or an aluminum cover with spacer. It is not affected by oil pressure as far as any danger of being blown out.

Your biggest risk is damaging the gauge. The oil pressure from the crankshaft through the governor to the prop can be as high as 400 pounds! The high oil pressure is usually an indication of low oil temp. As long as the oil temp is at least 40 degrees centigrade, you are OK for a run up or even a takeoff. I’d rather see a pilot wait until he has 50 degrees on the oil gauge, in case the gauge is wrong.

AAU: What about multi-viscosity oil, oil and fuel additives?

Nick: You don’t need them. Additives, that is. Now, I say that with tongue in cheek. If you are using av gas, there is enough lead to lubricate the valve guides and I don’t believe you need anything else in the fuel. If you are using car gas, then it may be a benefit to use Marvel Mystery Oil. I’m not endorsing it, I just know from experience it works.

However, don’t pre-mix it in bulk tanks. It will settle out.

Just use the recommended amount in the fuel tank of the airplane and shake the wings if it sets overnight.

engines. I know they have been operating them for a long time, some of them probably longer than the 24 years you have been with Aero Engines. I am sure we have got their dander up with disagreement on some of the subjects we have discussed.

If they call me, I am going to give them your number. Like a mechanic friend of mine once told me after he found out I had changed, for the first time, a cylinder on my R-1820, “Bill, you know just enough about ‘mechanicing’ to kill yourself.” He was probably right. However, you can’t own and operate an R-1820 and not work on it!

As for oil additives, you could get into trouble, especially with so-called “teflon coating” oils. There are many oil passages in the radial engine. Some of them are in the main rod bearing and are rather small.

Any build up of “coatings” will restrict the flow of oil and potentially can cause problems. If the coatings really coat, then you wouldn’t want them!

As for the multi-viscosity oils, I strongly suggest not to use the 15w-50 or 20w-50.

Phillips 25w-60 is OK. The other oils are just too thin to use. I know the Phillips will work. What is wrong with the single grade? That’s all we had for years and it does a fine job. I can’t see where the multi’s increase engine life or dependability. That is what it is all about, right?

Both videos have recently been posted to YouTube and are applicable to other states.

The pilot was on his third aerial application pass when he momentarily glanced over at his global positioning system (GPS) and the left spray boom struck the ground. The pilot said the spray boom wiggled back and forth before it folded back into the tail boom.

The helicopter then began to spin to the right and he initiated an autorotation.

The helicopter landed hard but remained upright. Examination of the helicopter

During an aerial application flight over a river, the pilot was spreading seed when the airplane struck and severed all four wires of an electrical transmission power line. During the forced landing, the airplane impacted tall vegetation. The fuselage, empennage, and both wings were substantially damaged. According to the pilot and photographs of the area, neither the transmission wires nor the poles were visible above the tree line, adjacent to the river banks. The pilot stated that he had been warned about the transmission lines that extended over the river and should have located

them before the application portion of the flight began.

On August 29, 2012, about 1530 central daylight time, an Air Tractor, Inc., AT301 airplane impacted terrain after experiencing a loss of power during lowlevel operations near Ralls, Texas. The pilot was not injured and the airplane was substantially damaged. Day visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The airplane was on a local flight and had departed about 1515 from Crosbyton Municipal Airport, (8F3), Crosbyton, Texas.

The pilot reported that he experienced a loss of engine power and executed a power-off landing to a farm trail in a field of tall cotton. After touchdown the landing gear struck soft dirt and the airplane nosed-over and came to rest inverted. The pilot was able to

exit without assistance. There was a substantial amount of fuel on-board, but no postimpact fire.

NTSB Identification: *WPR12CA403* Date: September 06, 2012 Location: Brawley, CA Aircraft: Ayres Corporation S2R-R1340 Injuries: 1 Minor.

The pilot reported that during an agricultural application flight he had erroneously attempted a downwind takeoff after reloading product with the outside temperature estimated at 106 degrees. The airplane departed from the dirt strip westbound, and the pilot was looking directly into the setting sun. The airplane did not climb and impacted a ditch on the west end of the runway and nosed over. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the wings and fuselage. The pilot reported no abnormalities with the aircraft prior to the accident. He stated the wind had shifted while he was reloading and did not notice it until after the accident.

On September 21, 2012, about 1730 Pacific daylight time, an Air Tractor, Inc., AT-502 sustained substantial damage during a forced landing following a loss of engine power and impact with wires near Firebaugh, California.

The airline transport pilot was not injured.

Visual meteorological conditions prevailed

for the aerial application flight, which was originating at the time of the accident. A flight plan had not been filed.

The pilot reported that, shortly after liftoff, the airplane felt sluggish, and he impacted wires off the end of the runway. He landed the airplane in the field beyond the wires, and both wings were bent up.

Snarling at the bit Tony Friley of Farm Aviation in Brawley California called and said he needed a pilot to help out for six weeks. I was just about to settle into an off season job of being “off” for the season. Fall was in the air at home and the “to do” list was hanging on the wall of the barn glaring accusingly at me.

An ag-pilot has to do what an ag-pilot does. When a guy like Tony calls and invites you to his operation, it’s hard to decline the offer.

I had never flown in California’s Imperial Valley and was looking forward to the challenge. I was introduced to Farm Air’s 400-gallon Garrett Thrush. It’s a 1978-model sporting a Marsh conversion with a Garrett Super One engine (TPE3311). The airplane does have a rather striking paint job, but it wears its scars, rashes and grease like any other early model ag-plane.

I have never worked a Garrett engine and honestly was in no hurry to do so. All my turbine time has been comfortably seated behind the well-mannered and courteous Pratt and Whitney PT-6. I had been around enough to know a Garrett is a screaming banshee of an engine; obnoxious, rude, and thuggish. A Garrett is an engine that always has it teeth bared.

It does however have plenty of power to back up all its tough talk.

All airplanes fly a little different. They all have their own personalities. That is most true when talking about older model Thrushes. There is something spectacular, however, about those mid-to-late seventies airplanes. Light weight, fabric tail, short engine mounts and perhaps a little field ingenuity has made many of these old birds into real sweetheart flying machines. The Thrush I flew at Farm Aviation is certainly an exceptional example.

On my first day there, Tony stood on the wing and screamed in my ear. Yelling over the roar of the engine, he explained the intricacies of operating the Garrett. My anxiety level was high.

It always is when working in a new area with an unfamiliar airplane, especially one with an unfamiliar engine. I felt like I was having to learn a secret handshake just to start it or shut it down.

Any pilot who has strapped himself into an older model Thrush has experienced the “Box of Chocolates” complex. It’s not until you get the airplane rolling down the runway and into the air before you know what you’ve got.

I was prepared for the worst, but was surprised at how well it handled. I made a few practice runs, feeling out the airplane for any indication of bad habits or unfavorable traits. I couldn’t

find a one. It was as pleasant to fly as taking a Sunday stroll with an old friend.

I need to interject here that I am not necessarily a “Thrush man” by nature. I like just about anything with wings, but when you get into an airplane that is truly a pleasure to fly, regardless of the make, it makes your job a lot easier and more enjoyable. It is something you want to talk about. I call these things intangible profits.

These old airplanes represent a technology and a method which has been lost and nearly forgotten in the aircraft production industry.

I flew several loads that day while the sun got higher in the sky and the outside temperature climbed quickly beyond the century mark; 106° F, 375 gallons in the hopper and the airplane barely shrugged a shoulder. I saw a 125 MPH average loaded ferry airspeed and a good 130-135 MPH return to the base airspeed. I have to hand it to the Super One Garrett engine; it pulls like a Bavarian pack mule and covers ground like a triple crown thoroughbred. All that screaming and snarling at the bit sure gets old though.

I do prefer a 400-gallon airplane. They just seem to fit me and fly better than their larger siblings. Of course, that is just my opinion. I know I am not alone in that sentiment.

The industry has been leaning toward bigger and heavier, more sophisticated machines. Price tags have soared beyond reach of many operators. These old airplanes represent a technology and a method which has been lost and nearly forgotten in the aircraft production industry. A bare bones, no frills, sturdy airframe that is cost efficient and easy to maintain is hard to find these days. Particularly when it comes to monoplanes.

These type aircraft have an important place in the industry, but with the aforementioned trend that part of the market goes pretty much unnoticed. Please understand, I am not bashing airplane builders, simply stating an observation from a “down in the trenches” point of view.

Our older generation of airplanes is starting to fade away.

Time and attrition are reducing their numbers. Like the veterans they are, most have gone away and those that remain are tired and battle worn. They are however, still a force to be reckoned with and they hold their place in the ag aviation fleet, not because of their price and certainly not because of their availability, mostly because they simply do their job so well. It’s too bad they just don’t make ‘em like they used too!
