Working out the details with new NAAA president, Mark Hartz of Arkansas.
Lights! Camera! Action! No one who has flown ag has ever really believed a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) would replace an ag-pilot. That was twenty years ago before GPS and other hightech innovations, like drones. Today, that certainty may not be so certain. I still believe it would be a stretch for UAVs to replace ag-pilots, for several reasons. Obviously, it would be difficult to fly the precision required from a remote location. However, I suppose if a car can parallel park itself, then a UAV could scope out the obstacles, including wires, and work around them. What is more important, from my viewpoint, is the industry should be seriously looking at UAV technology; not to replace pilots, but to offer a more comprehensive service to its customers. It is very easy to mount a “GoPro” camera to a remote controlled (RC) aircraft that can video crops from the air. Of course, range for the controller becomes an issue with off-the-shelf RCs. It is not unreasonable to believe at some point in the future, a more sophisticated RC, not unlike a less expensive drone, would be available to the public. If so, then this unit could scout crops, maybe even supplying data to write prescriptions for applications. Expect to see this technology develop in North Dakota in 2013, according to
a recent news article in “Farm & Ranch Guide”. Unmanned Applications Institute International (UAI), based in Grand Forks, North Dakota is pursuing having airspace granted from the FAA for this specific use. The company is looking at the grower operating the UAV for crop and livestock monitoring. I believe the unit, at least in the beginning, will be cost prohibitive to own and operate. However, an agoperator could spread this cost over many customers, possibly making it a viable investment. UAI International would not comment on the cost of their carbon fiber, 50-inch wingspan unit and ground station. I read in an NAAA e-newsletter there is going to be a movie produced about agaviation, “Colusa”, named after the filming location in California. I have reservations about any camera action for ag-aviation. After the fiasco with the reality TV show in Canada, putting ag-aviation before the eye of a camera could be dangerous. Movie producers want action, or at least something that will attract the attention of the moviegoer. To me, that would spell crashes and other so-called dangerous feats by an ag-plane. Even though the movie is supposedly about a romantic involvement between the son and daughter of two competing ag-operations, why would the ag-plane be in it other than for the danger factor?
No matter how much a movie producer claims his movie will promote agriculture, I think it will be a stretch to use an agplane in a romantic screenplay that does any positive promotion for our industry. I suppose I will have to watch the movie to know for sure and I hate romantic, goofy stuff. Time will tell. Another ag-pilot has become the target of an irate neighbor who shot and hit not only the aircraft, but the pants leg of the pilot. At this writing, a couple of days later, the shooter is not in jail. Imagine if this had been a drive-by shooting involving cars, where would the shooter be lodged? Is fly-by shooting not as criminal? I can only imagine the apprehension (terror?) of the pilot as the bullet ricocheted off the prop, through the engine and hopper, into the cockpit and through his pants leg; one heck of a gun, I’d say. What has got to happen? Does a pilot have to be killed to get this kind of thing stopped, or at least properly prosecuted? Shooting a gun at someone is shooting a gun at someone regardless of where. In my opinion, it was nothing short of attempted murder. Until next month, Keep turning

wiping the ends FAA Medical system to go paperless All applications for medical and student pilot certificates will be filed electronically instead of on paper by Oct. 1, the FAA said last week. In the January issue of the FAA Medical Bulletin (PDF), Federal Air Surgeon Dr. Fred Tilton said the paper system “allows for too many errors, leads to storage problems, and creates security risks.” It also costs the FAA $150,000 every year to print, store, distribute, and mail Form 8500-8. The electronicMedXPress system will eliminate those problems and expenses, and will make it possible to offer new services -- for example, Tilton said, pilots and AMEs will be able to track the status of applications online. EAA and AOPA raised concerns about the change.
Cotton Arizona— Cotton acreage for 2011 was reported from USDA as 248,000 Upland acres + 11,000 acres Pima for a total of 259,000 acres, an increase of 64,000 acres over 2010. It is estimated that the yield will be 1510 pounds per acre.
Record U.S. exports The USDA recently announced agriculture exports in its fiscal 2011 hit a record value of $137.4 billion. This exceeded the previous record by $22.5 billion. The record exports contributed to a trade surplus of $42.7 billion, which is another record. The signing of free trade agreements with Korea, Colombia and Panama may mean next year’s exports could surge even higher.
Accident free For the first time in over 60 years, New Zealand ag-aviation has gone three consecutive years without having a fatal accident.

agair mail airshow The Yuma airshow is coming up March 16th and 17th. I talked to the boss (Miles Morris, Morris Ag Air) about doing a static display at the show. He was very receptive to the idea, I talked with the airshow coordinator and they were very excited at the prospect. I intend to get a lot of photos and write an article covering the event. I was also wondering if it might not be a bad idea to have a few issues of AAU handy to pass out? I fired off an email to Thrush Aircraft asking for promo items. I don’t know here that will lead, but I figured it couldn’t hurt. I think that having an airplane and some ag pilots there to show case ag aviation and talk to the folks
will be a good thing. Hopefully, we will get a chance to dispel some myths or at least show that there isn’t a boogeyman out there in the airplane. This year is the 50th annual airshow and the centennial of U.S. Marine aviation. There should be quite a crowd. Let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions. Take care and stay safe! agrobatics Well, I finally took the time to do the Agrobatic course with Wayne Handley last week (Monday, Feb13-15).It worked out with the National Warbird Conference in Ontario, CA (Thurs Feb 16-18). A last minute call from a friend to see if I wanted to go to the conference and a last minute call out to Wayne to check his schedule to see if it might work out and it all fell into place. I had won the Agrobatic Course from Wayne way back in 2003 through an NAAA drawing. You told me that I should attend the course as you had done it and it was great, and he might not be doing it much longer. I will tell you, he has no thoughts of retiring or slowing down, as he flies pretty much everyday, either in his Extra, his Bonanza, or any one of the many planes of his friends in his airpark. Wayne is most accommodating to match someone’s schedule and gives the most rewarding flying experience that will last your entire career. What a thrill it was and what an education of unusual attitude and aerobatic flying. Wayne and wife Karen are a couple of the most down to earth people (no pun intended - ha) that you will meet. After a short time of visiting with them, I felt at home in their environment of

a neat airpark runway on top of the mountain, along with their beautiful home nestled in the woods. With deer plentiful in the backyard making tracks on his putting green, right next to his fire pit for those cool mountain evenings, overlooking the grand kids’ zip line between a couple of big Oak trees and 4-wheel trails up and down the mountain, you think, if this isn’t close to heaven, I can’t imagine what is, especially to a flat-lander(North Dakota) like me. Wayne is still a great spokesman for our industry. Having been one of us for 25 successful years, before switching and becoming one of the most entertaining aerobatic pilots in the business, with his Raven and Turbo Raven, his show was unbelievable to watch. With Wayne’s dry sense of humor, it might have been easy to have

misunderstood him about retiring or not flying anymore. But I assure you, Wayne Handley will be flying and educating ag-pilots and aerobatic pilots for a long time to come, as he has much knowledge and talent to share and he is still in great shape. Holy buckets, what a ride! Give him a call 831-596-5820. Now we just need to get you checked out in the Mustang Bill and we will. Hope to see ya in Sioux Falls for the Tri-States convention. Tim (Toby) McPherson Page,ND Hello Toby; I am ecstatic (who wouldn’t be?) about this upcoming May and the P51 checkout. I don’t think I’ll be able to put on the headsets afterwards! We’ll stay in touch about it. In the meantime, I’ll be studying up on the POH.
Hello Richard; Good to talk with you at the Tri-States. Also, I’m sure Ben Oliver will work out just fine flying for you this year. I’ve known him for over 30 years and never heard a bad word spoken about him. Thanks so much for sending the photo and text to go along with. Look for it in the April edition of AgAir Update. I’ll be sure to send extra copies. -Bill
As for Wayne, Graham and I are flying the Baron to California in April with a stop at Wayne’s. I’ve been through his course twice. However, this time, Graham will have the pleasure. Wayne sent a great photo of you with the Extra 300L. I’ve attached, just in case you may not have. -Bill
a blast I just got back from California after attending Wayne Handley’s aerobatic course. My experience was so awesome I had to share it with everyone. First of all, Wayne was a great host (a super nice guy) and the accommodations were very comfortable. Second, he fits the program to the pilot’s needs and experience to maximize the flight time. Third, WHAT A BLAST!!!!! Experienced or new to crop dusting, I would recommend flying with Wayne

by Mike Feeney During the autumn of 2011, professional photographer Tony Smith happened to sight a Super Air aircraft engaged in spreading fertilizer on a local farm near Okaihau, in Northland, New Zealand. Okaihau is inland from the well known Bay of Islands region; very popular with both NZ and overseas visitors. Being an old agricultural pilot and a friend of the pilot, Lester Mason, I thought it would be interesting to use a few of Tony’s excellent images and add some explanatory notes for overseas and local New Zealander readers. Super Air is a large operator with 14 pilots at 12 bases; including its head office and engineering division at Hamilton International Airport. The head office serves the prosperous
Waikato farming region. Super Air operates mainly from Taupo north and also has a large base at Masterton in the lower portion of the northern New Zealand island. Their interesting website will explain many details about the company, www.superair.co.nz In the photo where the aircraft is being loaded, Johnny Wintour, Lester’s workmate, drives one of their two loading vehicles with the fertilizer bucket’s sock positioned in the hopper opening. The New Zealand-built Fletcher FU-24-950, ZK-BHG, has had its original 400 HP, eight cylinder, Lycoming IO-720 piston engine replaced with a 550 SHP Walter turboprop. Super Air also fitted 550 SHP, P&W PT-6-11AG and 750 SHP, PT-6-34AG (de-rated to 550 SHP) turboprops to remanufactured
FU-24 airframes and use many in this configuration. The engine retrofit greatly enhances performance; particularly with respect to the rate-of-climb. The gas turbines, with their slow-revving propellers, are much quieter than the original combination which, particularly in the early morning, can be heard far from the airstrip. The snarling sound of the propeller tips, which are near supersonic speed at maximum take-off rpm, can be annoying to some whilst others rather like it. In my experience, it is a “blokey” sort of thing...if you get my drift. Super Air purchased the basic “Fuso Fighter” truck cab and chassis, then manufactured most of the loading equipment in their own workshop. This includes the large 5,000-litre fuel tank,

lockers for tools and safety gear, the boom and bucket, the hydraulic line system for lifting and adjusting the bucket’s angle and the rear loading cab with its duplicated controls and hydraulic ram controls. Weighing the load is accomplished by use of a bleed line to a calibrated hydraulic gauge. The long boom is folded and stowed for safe operation on public roads. A typical payload for the Walter and PT-6 FU-24 is, depending on airstrip slope and length, about 1.1 tonne on average and 1.27 tonne at max. structural hopper load when fuel load is lighter. Loading time is about 12 seconds, depending on the product’s flow characteristics. The 5,000 litres of fuel provides about 27 flight hours for the turboprop aircraft or 55 hours for those using piston engines. The bulk fertilizer product is delivered to the airstrip by truck and tipped into a large concrete or wooden bin which is located at the higher end of the airstrip. The loader-driver eases the bucket into the heap of fertilizer and then lifts the boom up to the loading height for weighing, using the gauge in his cab. He then moves the loader onto a set position and waits for the pilot to return and park the aircraft on a pre-determined spot to enable the driver to move in over the aircraft at an angle which should preclude damage to the tailplane or wing flaps. After loading, the driver backs out and, after checking
the vehicle is clear, the pilot applies full power and rolls. The team work is amazing to watch and is a rather ‘slick’ operation. New Zealand’s rural farm airstrips generally range in length from about 600 metres (2000 ft) if level, to perhaps 270 metres (900 ft) when very steep (a slope of up to 20%). All pilots prefer a strip to have some slope as this greatly reduces the long, laborious take-off roll that is required on a level strip. New Zealand ag aircraft routinely operate at weights which may be up to 30% greater than the type’s Normal or Standard Category figure. The take-off roll on a level strip may take as long as 25 seconds which, unless the surface is smooth, places prolonged stresses and shock loads on the undercarriage and increases airframe metal fatigue. With many of Lester’s takeoffs, he becomes airborne at about 65 knots and literally “falls” off the end of the airstrip with a considerable rate of descent as he accelerates to 85-90 knots for the climb. It is crucial the airstrip has no obstacles at the end and for some distance out along the extended initial flight path. Once the take-off has begun on a steep strip, it it not usually possible to abort the roll due to the aircraft’s momentum. Should an engine problem arise, or an unexpected large tailwind gust occur, the pilot must initiate the jettison process. By NZCAA law, 80% of the load must be able to be dumped within five seconds. This type of overloaded operation is legal only if no third party risk is present at the end of the airstrip or within the initial climb-out. A house, farm building, school or public roadway (if right on the airstrip’s end) could
be deemed as a third party human or property risk. The Fletcher FU-24 has a large wing area of 330 square feet and a thick aerofoil section which generates high lift at low airspeed, but also creates much drag at high angles of attack; particularly with flaps extended. The usual procedure is to retract take-off flaps as soon as airspeed permits, no matter what the height. The take-off weight may be as much as 2.7 tonnes when conditions are good. With the thrust to weight ratio provided by the turboprop engine, the FU-24 is capable of contour flying over much steeper terrain than were the earlier piston-engined models. For example, the first Fletchers that were operated back in the early 1960s had only 225 or 240 HP and when loaded with about 0.75 tonne could scarcely climb at all until some of the load had been spread. The accident rate involving these models, in retrospect, was staggeringly high with many WWII veteran pilots losing their lives or being seriously injured. The serious accident rate has improved greatly over the past 10 to 15 years; although it is, potentially, still a high-risk occupation should any complacency creep in or maintenance standards not be of the highest quality. For a long time the FU-24 had only one seat in the cockpit. One sat in the middle and with no dual controls simply got in it and taught oneself how to fly it. When I did my type rating, the instructor stood on the tarmac and observed me doing some steep turns, stalls, a forced landing onto the aerodrome and a few circuits. After a chat, he signed off on the type rating

form which was sent to Civil Aviation for processing. In the FU-24-950 and -954, the pilot sits on the left and there is a seat for a passenger. It is a tight fit, but quite adequate for the loader driver or a farmer to brief the pilot on the areas he wants covered. It is illegal to carry a passenger during actual high weight, low-level flight operations. The canopy slides aft and has a rubber seal to keep the dust and rain out (if maintained to a high standard). The check-cable is on the nose gear to prevent the oleo dropping out should the scissor-links fail. With the gas-turbine engines, the propeller is further forward when compared to the piston-engined models. The fuel tanks form part of the wing’s leading edge and are detachable. The hopper fill-hole is behind the cockpit and has a lid to reduce dust being sucked out. Sortie time, including loading, take-off, transit to the spreading area, sowing

time, return to the airstrip and the landing, depends on the distance and relative location of the target area with respect to the airstrip, the amount of climb and the rate per hectare. It may be as short as 2.5 minutes or as long as seven or eight minutes. About 4.5 minutes is fairly typical. The fastest I recall ever working was when sowing lime in a 240 HP, FU-24 at 1.5 tonne per acre onto an area right off the end of the strip and out to each side. With the help of my excellent loader-driver, Neville Hooper (whom I still chat with in Thames), I averaged 1.75 minutes and carted 0.85 tonne per load. The 60-ton job took just 60/1.75 = 34.3 loads per hour x 0.85 = 29 tons per hour...just over two hours to complete the job. But there was nothing clever about it really, as I was sowing at close to the dump rate of flow. Busy though for a ‘kid’ pilot of just 21. That was 50 years ago and I reflect now that I had then just logged my first 1,000 hours and must have completed at least 10,000 take-offs; most of them from small farm airstrips and in over-loaded Cessna 180 and FU-24 aircraft. This type of experience was to prove valuable when I began, with 3,000 hours logged, to fly in the rugged highlands of Papua New Guinea in 1964. Hemisphere GPS enters data services market for precision agriculture through acquisition of AgJunction CALGARY, AB—Hemisphere GPS announced that it is entering the emerging data services market in precision agriculture with a purchase agreement to acquire the assets and operations of AgJunction from GVM, Inc. AgJunction, located in State College, Pennsylvania, provides a cloudbased data management software platform and wireless hardware to precision agriculture retailers and growers. Driven by ever-increasing global food demand versus higher costs of inputs including fuel, fertilizer, pesticides and water, agriculture is increasingly becoming a high-technology business. Data services now represent an emerging growth segment in precision agriculture with market adoption driving an 80% 3-year cumulative
annual revenue growth rate for AgJunction. Through this acquisition, Hemisphere GPS aims to rapidly offer its customer base connected solutions integrating location based technology hardware with cloud-based wireless data management services. Established in 2008, AgJunction has developed a patent-pending, flexible, web-based system for client, farm and field management. The system is open and cloud-based to easily capture and share data from many types of precision agriculture controllers on the farm. Effective use of precision agriculture data can result in lower costs and environmental impact through lower use of pesticides, fertilizer and fuel, and provide a higher crop yield per acre, increased profitability and lower the impact on
global food costs. Agriculture service providers including fertilizer dealers, agronomists and co-ops can work directly with growers through the AgJunction platform through private-branded portals integrated into their business systems. The timely, seamless twoway transfer of data between farm equipment and the central AgJunction repository greatly improves efficiency and accuracy in the analysis of data related to yield, soil sampling, fertility, and planting including the development of prescription maps and input for other precision agriculture techniques. The system also streamlines retailer and farm operations with features such as equipment tracking, work order management, seed and chemical
ordering, and comprehensive reporting. The AgJunction platform is a scalable system supporting private-branded precision agriculture portals for major retailers such as the Wilbur-Ellis Company, Crop Production Services (CPS) and Jimmy Sanders Inc. “By integrating cloud-computing and location based applications, AgJunction’s technology removes complexities, costs and limitations currently associated with sharing and processing precision agriculture data,” said Steven Koles, President and CEO of Hemisphere GPS. “This acquisition represents tremendous strategic value by rapidly moving Hemisphere GPS towards a leadership position in this emerging precision agriculture data services sector. Ag-aviation at the “Air Show” by Tracy Thurman On March 17th, Morris Ag Air showcased agricultural aviation at the 50th Annual Marine Corps Air Station Yuma Air Show and Centennial Celebration of Marine Corps Air Power. The Yuma Air Show is always a big hit. The military base and aviation community open the gates and welcome in the public. Over fifty thousand spectators and fans crowd the flight line for a close-up look at everything from a main battle tank to antique biplanes to a B-52 Stratofortress. This year, poised among the static displays was a bright yellow S2R-T34 Thrush. It wasn’t easy to cut loose a working bird out of the flock to sit at an air show. However, we picked the prettiest one, gave her a bath, shined her up and flew the old girl to the airport. Hundreds of people stopped by to talk about airplanes and crop dusters and to ask questions about aerial application. Displaying the Thrush at the airshow provided a great opportunity to meet the public and explain the role of ag aviation.
I always knew that the average citizen had very little knowledge pertaining to our industry and much of it was incorrect or misinformed, but the level of mystery that surrounds the functions of an ag aviation operation was astounding. The most prolific questions asked were, “Why do ya’ll fly at night?”, “What size motor does that thing have.”, or “Are you that crazy guy that wakes me up at two o’clock in the morning?” I think the best one was a fellow who asked “Why is the electrical generator underneath the airplane?” It took a while to figure that one out. He thought the pump was what powered the lights. I love conversations like that. We were on the ramp in front of the Thrush from 0730 until 1600 and I don’t recall more than five or ten minutes when I wasn’t talking to someone, showing them around the aircraft or explaining how the systems work. I discovered early in the day that when I described a typical spraying evolution - telling the story from loading through ferrying, identifying the field, setting up
the SATLOC and flying the pattern that a crowd would gather and was practically mesmerized by the tale. I guess there’s something about seeing a pilot talk with his hands that sparks people’s interest. It was as educational for me as much as it was for the folks we talked to. I learned that most are fascinated by what we do and understand that it is a necessary job. I did speak to a couple of die hard “hippies” that bemoaned the use of pesticides in any form. They were shocked when I explained that we also sprayed organic crops. The NAAA had supplied a box of “Why… Because…” pamphlets. The pamphlet covers a lot of the topics questioned, including organic crops. I think their little booklet is a wealth of information in compact form and is a good tool in helping to inform the public. AgAir Update was also represented with a box of extra copies that the public gobbled up. “You even have your own newspaper?!” I was happy to see the desire to learn more about what we do. There were quite a few guys and a girl
who expressed interest in joining the ranks. Private pilots mostly and a couple of Marine Corps aviators nearing the end of their tours. I spoke with them at length about the occupation and what it takes to make it as an ag pilot. They were all grinning thoughtfully when they left. Hopefully a few seeds were sown for the next generation of ag pilots. I know most aerial applicators don’t have the time or manpower to participate in air shows. Some think it is frivolous, while others want nothing to do with public interaction. I believe that it is an important event in our communities and a means to educate the public. We made a good impression on the folks of Yuma and all those who traveled far to attend the show. I take a little comfort in knowing now when someone local watches me fly there’s a good chance they will be a little more familiar with what our industry does. Perhaps they’ll explain to a friend about the little fan underneath the airplane.

Will seaweed be the biofuel solution? Editor’s Note: Ethanol production, along with other factors, has increased the number of acres/hectares being sprayed by aircraft immeasurably. For the most part, the boom ag-aviation has enjoyed the last four or five years has been partly due to ethanol production; demand for ethanol raw materials has help to raise commodity prices. Should seaweed become a source for ethanol, will it affect ag-aviation? The point is, nothing stays the same, be prepared for the future. by Dennis Avery Churchville, VA—Researchers may have broken the biofuel barrier. A new biotech discovery enables ethanol to be made from a common variety of brown seaweed. This would by-pass the biggest problem with corn ethanol and biodiesel—the world’s shortage of
18A
agairupdate.com
cropland. The new ethanol process uses the familiar E coli bacterium working on kombu, a variety of edible brown kelp, which is common in the world’s seas and oceans. It has been grown and harvested commercially by such countries as China, Japan and Korea for hundreds of years. If you like sushi, it is the brown wrapping on your favorites. The new process can turn a mixture of kombu and water, with the E. coli added, into a solution of about five percent ethanol in two days. Distill the ethanol from the water; put the water back into the ocean and “Voila”! Better yet, this happens at low temperatures, between 25 and 30 degrees C. Thus the ethanol can be produced without the use of additional costly energy—a big advantage over the current efforts to produce cost-effective ethanol from algae.
An analysis by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory suggests that the U.S. could supply one percent of its annual gasoline needs by growing the brown seaweed for harvest on less than one percent of its territorial waters. The world already grows and harvests more 15 million metric tons of kombu and other seaweeds for direct human consumption. There seems no reason why large additional amounts of the seaweed could not be harvested for ethanol without driving up the costs of other foods. Corn ethanol competes directly for land with food and feed, thereby increasing food costs to consumers, especially for meat, milk, and eggs. The seaweed catch? The new ethanol depends on genetically engineered bacteria. The process has been developed by BioArchitecture Lab., Inc. (BAL) and the University of Washington in Seattle. They modified the common E. coli bacterium to turn the sugars in edible kelp into ethanol. The research has just been reported in the January 20 issue of the journal Science. “The form of sugar inside the seaweed is very exotic,” says Yashuo Yoshikuni, one of the developers. “There is no industrial microbe to break down the alginate [in the seaweed] and convert it into fuels and chemical compounds.” How badly does the environmental movement want to get rid of fossil fuels? Enough to accept the biotech ethanol solution? At this moment, the world’s acceptance of other renewable fuels is plummeting, due to their high costs compared to coal and natural gas. Meanwhile, the new horizontal drilling and fracking processes have suddenly made long-known and abundant shale petroleum reserves far more costeffective. The claims that fracking will pollute drinking water are not holding up, since the petroleum-drilling is thousands
of feet further down in the soil profile than the well-drilling. The eco-movement has long demanded “natural” food production. Bio-tech food production has been successfully banned in many third world countries because of the pressure from first world activists. But would that apply to kelp ethanol vats? The kelp for biofuel can be grown in Puget Sound, but kelp farms have been rejected by landowners and fisherman. On the other hand, if kombu ethanol can be produced so readily, other nations have at least as much seawater in their surroundings as the “rich” in North America and Europe. Meaning all countries having access to seawater could make energy and support their own populations while expanding their economies into the 21st century. Remember, of course, none of this will much reduce our dependency on oil. One percent of our territorial waters for one percent of our fuel means it will only be useful in fulfilling the congressional mandate and perhaps rescue us from corn ethanol. Dennis T. Avery, a senior fellow for the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C., is an environmental economist. He was formerly a senior analyst for the Department of State. He is co-author, with S. Omaer spreader in Brazil by Bill Lavender During a recent visit to Brazil, I noted there were numerous flying operations in the rice country of Rio Grande do Sul that used the Omaer spreader. This is a fiberglass spreader built in Brazil. It is very thin with a narrow and unusual exit area. Note the four exit holes and the side exits. The operators like to use it on their Ipanema aircraft because of its low drag component. Admittedly, the operators says it does not produce the quality pattern of the Transland Swathmaster and is used for selective applications. In these photos, SK Aviação Agricola in Cachoeira do Sul, www.skaviacao. com.br, (L-R) Mário Henrique Kampf and Eduardo Hentschke Schroeder, were kind enough to allow AgAir Update to take pictures of the Omaer spreader mounted on their Ipanema. —Bill Lavender/Editor

Unique chemistry in Armezon herbicide from BASF is tough on weeds, safe on corn Corn growers can protect their input investments and yield with new post-emerge herbicide from BASF RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC—The continued spread of resistant weeds and strong commodity prices have high-yielding corn growers seeking more complete, comprehensive weed management solutions to protect their crops. That’s why BASF Crop Protection today announced the addition of Armezon™ herbicide to its innovative
herbicide portfolio. Armezon helps growers maximize their yields by controlling tough, yield-robbing weeds while being safe to all corn types. A post-emerge herbicide solution for corn, Armezon controls problematic grasses and broadleaf weeds such as common lambsquarters, waterhemp, giant foxtail and crabgrass – including those with resistance to glyphosate, triazines, PPOs, and ALS inhibitors. “Armezon is definitely tough on weeds,” said John Sabatka, Post Corn Herbicides Product Manager with BASF. “At the
same time, it’s also safe to use on all field and specialty corn, regardless of trait – including the most sensitive varieties.” Armezon also has a wider window of application when compared to most other post-emerge corn herbicides on the market. It is an excellent crossspectrum tank-mix partner, which makes it particularly helpful for growers who rely on post applications of atrazine or glyphosate to manage tough weeds. With innovative solutions, technical support and educational tools, BASF is
a grower’s No. 1 partner for managing weed resistance by providing more corn and soybean herbicide sites of action than any other crop protection company. The launch of OpTill® PRO and Armezon herbicidesdemonstrates the commitment of BASF to provide growers with new chemistries and products to help maximize their yield potential and proactively manage resistant weeds. NAAA membership advantages: 10 reasons it pays to be an NAAA member NAAA’s new dues structure will not take effect until July 1, therefore AgAir Update readers have about a threemonth window to join NAAA and save on their membership dues. You’ll save approximately 10%—or more in some operators’ cases—by joining or renewing by June 30, 2012. However, NAAA membership at any price is a worthwhile investment. The payoff far exceeds what you spend in dues in the form of effective advocacy, national representation, education and safety programs and the personal connections you make with fellow members. Here are 10 reasons why it pays to be an NAAA member!
Annual Inspection Hot Section Inspection Gear Box Inspection Nozzle Cleaning & Flowing
1. Government & Public Representation: Imagine how difficult it would be to operate if an organization like NAAA wasn’t around to serve as the eyes, ears and voice of the aerial application industry in the nation’s capital. Would any other organization have your back to the degree NAAA does? The Association is seeking favorable outcomes on a myriad of issues vital to the agricultural aviation industry. Top policy issues include: 1) mitigating the impact of Clean Water Act NPDES pesticide general permit requirements, which took effect Oct. 31 and are now being enforced; 2) preventing pesticide use restrictions

and fewer pesticides being available to commercial applicators; 3) averting threats to GPS stability and availability; 4) properly marking guy-wire and freestanding towers and advocating for safe wind energy siting; and 5) preserving the user fee exemption for agricultural aircraft. 2. Wallet Watchmen: Aerial applicators have saved thousands of dollars a year thanks to NAAA’s federal oversight and advocacy efforts. The Association successfully lobbied Congress to enact legislation providing more than $4 million in annual federal fuel tax relief for U.S. aerial applicators and prevented costly user fees from being charged to ag aircraft by convincing lawmakers to exempt agricultural aircraft from user fees. The Obama Administration is proposing a $100 user fee for use of controlled airspace in its new budget, which NAAA is actively opposing. These savings are 10 times greater, on average, than what your annual national and state association membership dues would cost combined. 3. Exclusive Insights, Breaking News and Premium Content: NAAA keeps members informed with breaking news, grassroots alerts and important updates. The NAAA eNewsletter is a members-only benefit and NAAA’s prime means of keeping members apprised of major developments within the industry and inside the beltway. NAAA’s website has a treasure trove of premium content available exclusively to members, including the very best guidance on complying and protecting yourself from $37,500-per-day penalties for NPDES pesticide general permit violations. This includes a “model contract” for reference when preparing contract negotiations with clients and is designed to help you avoid being categorized under the
NPDES permit as a “decision maker” instead of an “applicator.” 4. Wind Tower Education Materials: To ensure that farmers are fully informed before making decisions about windenergy development, NAAA launched a campaign to raise awareness about the worrisome effects of wind energy development on agriculture and aviation. That message is articulated in a series of wind tower education ad slicks, safety stuffers and radio scripts available free to NAAA members. Visit www.agaviation.org/towers.htm to learn more.
NAAA launched a campaign to raise awareness about the worrisome effects of wind energy development on agriculture and aviation. 5. Public Relations Resources: Request videos, brochures and extra magazine copies for your public relations needs with the media, local governmental officials, schoolchildren and the public. Prepare beforehand by consulting the NAAA Media Relations Kit. This online members-only resource includes advice on communicating with the media and elected officials, as well as background information and talking points about the importance of aerial application and a number of other subjects of interest. Visit www. agaviation.org/content/naaa-mediarelations-kit. 6. Membership Directory: NAAA’s Annual Membership Directory is coveted by newcomers and longtime members alike. NAAA’s Directory is loaded with operator and pilot contacts, as well as
contact information for the premier suppliers of parts and services to the industry. This is an indispensable asset, and it’s only available to NAAA members. 7. Free Job Listings: If you’re an operator who needs a pilot or a pilot looking for work, advertise by posting a free job listing on NAAA’s website. NAAA members can post, modify or remove their job listing at any point. Visit www.agaviation.org/content/joblistings to get started. 8. Special Discounts: NAAA membership coupled with participation in PAASS, Operation S.A.F.E. fly-ins and the Leadership Training Program offer ag pilots several ways to improve their professionalism, earn possible CEUs and achieve discounts through their insurance providers. You also get discounted rates to NAAA’s Annual Convention with your membership. 9. “Social” Networking: NAAA may be the Voice of the Aerial Application Industry, but no one embodies the face of the aerial application industry better than our members. Now members have the ability to add a picture to their online profile. We hope this dose of added personalization leads to new and renewed connections as you look people up in NAAA’s Online Member Directory and are able to put a face to a name. As NAAA’s picture collection proliferates, so too will the value of the Online Member Directory. To update your profile picture, login to www. agaviation.org/user. 10. Support: NAAA is someone to call when you have questions, need information or are having business problems. We’re here to help. The small size of NAAA’s staff (six association professionals) belies the outsize results the Association delivers. That’s because NAAA’s forhire employees are augmented by a supportive group of more than 1,700 aerial application supporters. We invite you to join the cause of preserving and protecting agricultural aviation and your way of life if you aren’t a member already. NAAA announces new dues structure, effective July 1, 2012 The National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) is increasing its membership dues for the first time since 2008. The new rates take effect July 1, 2012, when NAAA’s new fiscal year begins. The Board of Directors met in Alexandria, Va., Feb. 10-11 for NAAA’s Spring Board Meeting and voted to increase dues in all categories by approximately 10%. The decision to raise dues and restructure the fees for additional aircraft was not taken lightly, but the Board felt the moves were necessary in light of several changes taking place within the industry. Consolidation of operations over the past several years has resulted in fewer operators, aircraft and pilots in the industry. Based on research done prior to the 2004 industry survey, NAAA concluded there were approximately 1,625 operators. New research by SRA International, which conducted NAAA’s 2012 industry survey puts the estimate of Part 137 operators actively carrying out agricultural application activities closer to 1,350—17% fewer than previously believed. One result of larger conglomerates absorbing smaller operations is several former operator members have dropped down to the pilot membership category, resulting in a loss of dues revenue. A dues increase was seen as the best way to ensure that NAAA has the resources to continue to provide multiple and meaningful services to the membership. Since operators are the biggest benefactors of the Association’s work, tying the operator dues structure to the number of aircraft was seen as the most equitable way to collect membership dues resources vital to performing the multitude of NAAA services to the industry. According to NAAA’s 2012 industry survey, operators have 2.1 aircraft per operation, on average. The most notable change in the membership structure is related to operators with more than one aircraft. Under NAAA’s current dues structure, which expires June 30, 2012, operators pay $10 per aircraft for every aircraft over three. For example, an operator with four aircraft would pay $460 ($450 base dues, plus $10 for one additional aircraft over three). Starting July 1, that
As of July 1, the new rates are as follows: • Operator: $500, plus $100 per aircraft for every aircraft over one • Participating Operator: $1,000, plus $100 per aircraft for every aircraft over one • Affiliated Operator: $200 • Pilot: $200 • Participating Pilot: $380 • International: $250 • WNAAA: $200 • Associate: $95 • Allied Industry (1-10 employees): $500 • Allied Industry (11-50 employees): $750 • Allied Industry (50-100 employees): $950 • Allied Industry (101-500 employees): $1,100 • Allied Industry (500+ employees): $1,900 • Affiliated Allied Industry: $200 • State/Regional Association: $750 operator’s dues will be $800 ($500 base dues, plus $100 for each additional aircraft over one). The current dues rates will remain in effect through the end of June. Anyone who has not joined for 2012 can join at the current rates until June 30. All members will be assessed at the new dues rates when renewing for a 2012
membership after June 30 or for the 2013 membership year. Don’t wait until right before the national convention to join NAAA. If you have not already done so, join now and save. Bill on left (grandfather) - Casey middle - Tim (father) on right. Casey Williams’s passion for flying grew as he helped his father and grandfather. Starting at a young age and repeating his father’s steps from years past, Casey fueled, cleaned windshields, washed airplanes and eventually loaded. Casey started flying his sophomore year in high school and soloed on a cold December day. CFI Arlen Olson wrote on his torn shirt tail: First Solo Flight, Cessna 172, N42062. “ In the snow he did go… Ho Ho Ho. 12-23-1995.” What a day this was for Casey! His mom and dad watched from afar and stayed out of sight. From what they had just witnessed, they knew flying was
in his blood and he was flying just as smooth as if he had done it for a lifetime. Casey graduated high school in May of 1997 then headed south to Bainbridge, GA to attend Ag Flight for his ag flying training. His natural abilities and love of flight made it possible for him to achieve in four months what the average student does in nearly a year. Casey flew his first season when he was 19 years old. 2003 was a very important year for Casey; he purchased the family business from his grandparents. Through hard work and dedication, Casey has proven himself to be a very professional businessman and operator.

Serving on the NATA board began in 2005 where Casey served as treasurer, followed by vice president and moving on to president in 20082010. Casey participated in the NAAA leadership program, which proved very beneficial to him. He was active in several legislative issues during his terms as an officer and board member of NATA. Casey, along with his father and grandfather were inducted into the 100th Meridian Museum’s Aviation Hall of Fame on October 18, 2003 for being “Three Generations of Active Ag Pilots”. The three were recognized for their outstanding service in aviation and for continuing the legacy of Orville and Wilbur Wright. This induction was indeed an honor for him and his family. The 1985 Airman of the Year, Bill Williams, (Casey’s grandfather) and the 2000 Airman of the Year, Tim Williams, (Casey’s father) presented the 2011 Airman of the Year Award to the 3rd generation Airman of the Year - Casey Williams.

USDA chief economist gives forecast at outlook conference Referring to 2011 as a “very good year for agriculture,” USDA Chief Economist Joe Glauber recently outlined what he sees coming in 2012. His forecast includes the following: Exports for this year to top $131 billion, down from $1 billion from last year. Although down, this is the second highest on record. Glauber said this reduction reflects record global crop production with weaker prices and export volumes. China became the U.S.’s largest export customer in 2011, buying just under $20 billion in various commodities. Exports are predicted to drop 15% in 2012, reflecting that nation’s concentration on large quantity commodities like soybeans and cotton; China is expected to purchase
10% of the U.S. soybean crop this year. Assuming a return to trend yields, U.S. corn stocks are expected to increase in 2012. Livestock producers should see increasing margins toward the end of the year; world corn stocks for 2011-2012 have tightened and are estimated at 52.3 days’ use, the lowest since 1973-74;

Avgas coalition says no immediate threat to supply Aviation groups say avgas will continue to be available despite an escalation of Friends of the Earth’s efforts to force the EPA to deal with the last remaining leaded fuel. “Despite the lawsuit, the near-term availability of leaded aviation fuel is not threatened in any way,” the GA Avgas Coalition said in a joint statement.

“Members of industry, along with the FAA and EPA, will continue our diligent efforts toward a high-octane unleaded alternative to leaded avgas, with safety of flight as our foremost consideration.” Friends of the Earth (FOE) filed a lawsuit against the EPA last week, alleging the agency hasn’t moved quickly enough on a petition filed in 2006 to eliminate leaded fuel. The Avgas Coalition, which represents all the major GA associations, suggested FOE is taking a simplistic approach to a complex problem and also noted that while the suit names the EPA, it’s the FAA that sets aviation fuel standards. “Although EPA is charged

with establishing aircraft emissions standards, it must consult with the FAA and cannot establish standards that would adversely affect safety,” the coalition said. “If the EPA does set new lead emissions standards for aircraft, the FAA would have responsibility for implementation and would have to explore the establishment of new fuel specifications.” The coalition also noted that much progress has already been made in reducing the environmental impact of lead in gasoline and that the EPA has made the standards for ambient
air lead content 10 times more stringent in its new regulations. GA airports, along with other sources of environmental lead (like battery plants), are being monitored for lead content in the air and most airports meet the new standards, the coalition said. As the process moves along, the coalition pledged to continue work with federal agencies and the private sector to identify and support the future production of avgas alternatives.

answer If you are being treated through counseling sessions, you may be able to gain medical certification. You need to get copies of your medical records, plus a good status report, and take them to an aviation medical examiner (AME). The AME should be able to give you some idea of your chances. Alternatively, the AME can phone the FAA to discuss your situation. If you are taking one of the four acceptable medications and have been on a consistent dosage for 12 months, you need to follow the instructions on the FAA Medical Certification website. Oligrow hosts Operation S.A.F.E. by Graham Lavender An Operation S.A.F.E. spray clinic was held in northeastern Louisiana starting Monday, March 4, hosted by Oligrow of Delhi, Louisiana State University and the Louisiana Agricultural Aviation Association. The week-long event began with a hamburger and hot dog cookout at the Oligrow operation. Seth Olivier, Oligrow’s president, showcased his new 140 x 100 hangar along with a 2,000 sq. foot attached office and kitchen. Oligrow’s new, expanded facilities provided an excellent venue for the evening pilots’ meeting where flying schedules and logistics were discussed. Also invited to the Monday night event were local first responders. Oligrow and LAAA provided
local law enforcement, EMS and fire departments the opportunity to view NAAREF’s “First Response” video.
The week-long event began with a hamburger and hot dog cookout LSU setup the testing area near the Oligrow airstrip with a 175-foot string for wet calibration and collection bins for dry. A total of seven aircraft were calibrated.

Research trial results reveal yield advantage for second year in a row Comprehensive pest management helps boost corn and soybean yields RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC — With recent commodity price levels, every bushel counts. To fully take advantage of the opportunity, a proven way for growers to maximize yield is using a comprehensive pest management program featuring a combination of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides from the BASF Crop Protection portfolio of products. In newly released results from two years of crop protection research trials, using a comprehensive approach led
to an average 6.8 bu/A increase in soybeans and 28.9 bu/A increase in corn when compared to a non-residual, glyphosate-based program. Conducted in 2010 and 2011, the replicated field studies in soybeans and corn at university and BASF sites throughout the Midwest evaluated yield responses to BASF crop protection inputs. Among the products studied were Headline® fungicide and Headline AMP™ fungicide, as well as three products powered by Kixor® herbicide technology: Sharpen®herbicide, OpTill® herbicide and Verdict™ herbicide. The 2011 study also evaluated several new innovations on soybeans, including
Priaxor™ fungicide and Fastac™ insecticide. “With recent commodity prices, there’s great opportunity for growers looking to get the most out of every acre,” said Dan Westberg, Ph.D., BASF Technical Market Manager. “Studies continue to show that the BASF Crop Protection portfolio gives growers the necessary tools to holistically manage weeds, diseases and insect pests, which in turn helps them maximize their yields and get a positive return on investment.”
Corn results Corn results from the 2011 study showed a 171.2 bu/A average by using a combination of Verdict herbicide preemergence, followed by a glyphosate post, followed by Headline AMP fungicide at VT, a yield increase of 12.4 bu/A compared to using an atrazine premix preemergence followed by a glyphosate post. Compared to only using a glyphosate post, the yield increase was 26.9 bu/A. When factoring in results from the 2010 trials – which studied the same products – the average increase in bushels over using only a glyphosate post application can bring growers an extra $129.14 per acre. The potential yield increase found in the 2010 and 2011 studies represents an estimated
return on investment (ROI) of $3.51 for each additional dollar invested in the BASF program. “We now have seen for two straight years how beneficial the BASF product portfolio can be in helping to maximize not only yield, but also profit,” Westberg said.
Soybean results Combining the results of the 2010 and 2011 studies, soybean yields can benefit as much as 6.8 bu/A from using a portfolio of BASF products. The 2011 study used a combination of glyphosate and Kixor (OpTill herbicide, Sharpen herbicide or Sharpen plus Zidua® herbicide) preplant, followed by glyphosate post, followed by Priaxor fungicide plusFastac insecticide at R3. This provided an average yield of 52.6 bu/A. Zidua, Priaxor and Fastac are all new products from BASF that are not yet registered by the U.S. EPA. Priaxor will be a premix composed of a 2:1 ration of pyraclostrobin – the active ingredient found in Headline fungicide – and Xemium® fungicide, a new active ingredient in the carboxamide family. The combination will provide long-lasting preventative and disease-stopping protection as well as good coverage of the leaf surface and systemic distribution to ensure optimum coverage. Zidua will be a new class of chemistry

that provides long-lasting residual control of small-seeded broadleaf weeds and grasses, including problematic glyphosate-resistant Palmer amaranth and waterhemp. Fastac will be a pyrethroid insecticide and excellent tank-mix partner with disease control and Plant Health fungicides such as Headline and Priaxor. It’s expected to be registered on a number of crops, including soybeans, cotton, cereals and alfalfa. Profit and ROI for the 2011 study cannot be calculated because Priaxor, Zidua and Fastac are not yet registered with the U.S. EPA. According to results from the 2010 study, the average increase in bushels over using only a glyphosate post application can bring growers an extra $74.20 per acre. The potential yield increase represented an estimated ROI of $3.47 for each additional dollar invested in the BASF program.
Offers for growers To help growers attain the positive results from using a comprehensive approach – and to help them manage risk in today’s high-reward, high-risk commodity price environment – BASF is
providing several offers in 2012. Three of these expire on March 15, and they include partial purchase price rebates in the event of certain commodity price fluctuations (Investment Advantage), interest-free financing on qualifying purchases (Finance Advantage), and as much as 20 percent savings on select products (Headline Advantage). An additional offer, Insurance Advantage, allows qualifying growers in select states to reduce their crop insurance premiums. “The yield and ROI benefits of using a portfolio of BASF products over a low-input glyphosate program have been made clear by the studies,” said Paul Rea, Vice President, U.S. Crop Protection, BASF. “Combining the portfolio with the offers, BASF is committed to helping growers improve yield, mitigate risk, manage costs and maximize profits.” Learn more about these offers at www.growersadvantage.basf.us. The FAA recently issued notice that it intends to discontinue the paper application form used to apply for FAA medical certification. The agency will on Oct. 1, 2012, switch to its online FAA Form 8500-8 application, otherwise known as “FAA MedXpress.” That virtual form was introduced in 2007 and “has evolved considerably, streamlining FAA medical certification into a much more efficient and seamless process,” says the FAA. Within that framing, the paper form many pilots are used to has been deemed redundant and obsolete, and it will be going away this fall. If you’d like to get a jump on things, the online from is fully operational and ready for use, now; the paper forms go
away on Oct. 1. If you haven’t already tried the online form, that’s the marker after which you (and the more than 400,000 other airmen the FAA says fill out one of these forms each year) will have to start using it. The FAA says the change was prompted by the complex and burdensome costs, logistics, and resources needed to revise, reprint and redistribute the forms worldwide. The agency believes doing that online is simply more efficient. Click here for the official DOT release.

wing and a prayer
God’s message to humanity “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and our hands have handled, of the Word of life” (1 John 1:1). What an awesome thing it must have been for the apostles to realize that the One who lived and walked with them on the dusty paths in Israel, the One they listened to as He talked about the kingdom of God, was actually God in the flesh. The One that they heard speaking to them and touched with their hands was actually God who came out of eternity and into time for the purpose of revealing His purpose for our lives. “Without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles,
believed on in the world, received up into glory” (1 Timothy 3:16). God became a man so He could pay the penalty for our sins. “That which we have seen and heard we are declaring to you, that you also may have fellowship with us. Yes, and our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son, Jesus Christ” (1 John 1:3). This is an awesome statement saying that finite man can live in fellowship with the infinite God. The One who created the universe and everything in it has chosen to allow us to have fellowship with Him. That becomes even more amazing when you realize how vast and great God is. He fills the universe and yet He will have fellowship with lowly man. The difficulty of trying to comprehend this

was expressed by David when he said, “When I consider your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained; What is man, that You are mindful of him? And the son of man, that You visit him?” (Psalm 8:3-4). There are trillions of star in the universe and God calls them all by name (Psalm 147:4). “This is the message which we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). The infinite and eternal God who created the heavens and the earth; the God who transcends time and space had a message that He wanted to reveal to mankind. God wanted to reveal His infinite power, wisdom, glory, and love
to finite humanity. For this purpose God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, the Messiah, who was the express image of the Father, to demonstrate God’s love for you. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life... he that has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 8:12, 14:9-11). The perfect light of God became a man to tell humanity how to stop living in the ways of darkness and live in the light that God gives us through faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior. “If we say that we have fellowship with God, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not tell the truth” (1 John 1:6). From a moral standpoint, light symbolizes purity, and darkness symbolizes evil. Light
and darkness are mutually exclusive, they cannot coexist. Paul wrote, “For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?” (2 Corinthians 6:14). Zacharias said, “The Dayspring from on high has visited us, to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:78-79). Jesus told Paul that He was sending him to the Gentiles to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sin and an inheritance in heaven (Acts 26:17-18). The purpose of God’s message to humanity is to bring us out of the darkness of sin and into the light of Jesus Christ. God created Adam and Eve with a free will to make their choice about having a
loving relationship with God. God could have created humanity with the mindset to automatically worship Him, but God doesn’t want to force Himself upon any of His creation; God wants our love for Him to be of our own free will. Free will to make a choice is what makes worship, love, and fellowship meaningful. God gives you the same choice He gave to Adam and Eve. You can have a loving and meaningful relationship with God, or you can go your own way like Adam and Eve and lose your fellowship with God. When you go your own way, living a self-centered life, and only seeking to please yourself, it will always lead you into the darkness of alienation from God. The treadmill of chasing after selfish desires and worldly riches and pleasures will eventually lead you into the vast emptiness of an unfulfilled
life—never fulfilling the purpose God created you for. A self-pleasing life leads to being blinded by Satan so you cannot see God’s saving grace through faith in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:4). John said, “If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Have you turned your back on God and now living in the darkness of a sinful lifestyle? Are you being controlled by your sinful habits that lead you down the path that ends up being a life of emptiness and frustration? You
don’t have to live that way; God wants to forgive you and get you on the right path of living in the light of Jesus Christ’s love, grace and mercy! Jesus said you can have a life of joy in fellowship with Him and God (John 15:11). God loves you so much that He gave His Son to die for your sins (John 3:16) so you can have fellowship with Him and Jesus Christ for all eternity. You can have the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21) and spend eternity with God and Jesus Christ.

Nebraska to build wind tunnels University of Nebraska-Lincoln scientists are expanding their research into pesticide drift, amid new legal and regulatory concerns over the issue. Greg Kruger, a cropping systems specialist at UNL’s West Central Research and Extension Center at North Platte, is leading the research into the potential of pesticide drift, which occurs when pesticides drift to unintended targets when they’re applied to fields.
The UNL research will evaluate drift through different nozzle types, application pressures and spray solutions and at different wind speeds. The addition of the new facility will enable research to be conducted on spray collection efficiency, pesticide penetration into the plant canopy, and spray quality and pesticide efficacy comparisons. Plans at West Central are to build a system of two drift tunnels, which would
be only the second in the country to conduct such research. The only other tunnel in the nation is directed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and USDA it has been integral in the design of this system, Kruger said. This will be the first commercial testing wind tunnel facility in the U.S. The drift tunnels, which will take about eight months to build, will have variable speed fans at one end to simulate wind flow and scrubber systems
at the other to prevent contamination of the environment by the pesticides being tested. Plants, insects and other living specimens will be placed in the tunnels for application and a laser will be used to determine particle size. One tunnel – 48 feet long, 4 feet wide and 4 feet tall – will be used to test low wind speeds, zero to 25 mph. The other – at least 30 feet long, 1 foot high and 1 foot wide – will be capable of testing winds up to 220 mph, which will enable researchers to replicate aerial application conditions. The tunnels will cost about $1.2 million to build, to be funded by BASF, Winfield Solutions and the Wilbur-Ellis Co. Other support is being provided by UNL Extension and Agricultural Research Division, both part of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Source The NATA Voice

in my opinion
Drift Recently, I overheard one of our students saying that he would soon be heading to a mid-western state to begin flying an Ag-Cat, spraying herbicides including Roundup and 2,4D. Assuming that he was telling me the truth, I offered him this advice: reread the very first of the six tenets in our Basic Ag Flight syllabus regarding safe and efficient ag turn-arounds. I continued - spray off prior to pulling back on the stick as you pull up over trees. Keep in mind, whenever you pull back on the stick to stop your descent into the field, or to pull up over trees, you are imposing a high wing loading on the wings, which sucks the chemical outwards and into
the vortices. Once in the vortices, God only knows where the chemical will end up. There is a very good possibility you will soon be faced with a drift claim. By the same token, when entering a field, do not turn your spray on until firmly established over the crop. In My Opinion, a drift problem is less likely to occur when entering the field than exiting a field. In both of these cases, it may require that you make two clean-up passes. So what! Big deal! Make two clean-up passes. While I am on the subject, I may as well include the following regarding drift: stay acutely aware of inversions. If you see smoke rising and then
flatten out, do not spray a herbicide. An inversion occurs when there is an increase in temperature as height above ground increases. Often times an inversion precedes a warm front, but not always. On a clear, cool morning with little or no wind, preceded by a clear, cool night you will probably have an inversion. The best course of action is to wait until you have a favorable wind. Do not be lulled into thinking, “Boy, these are perfect conditions to fly - nice, cool air and no wind.” Use lots of smoke oil. Paraffin oil is expensive, but it is still the cheapest insurance against a drift claim. If you will be spraying in the vicinity
of a neighborhood, school, house of ill repute, etc., be sure to record the wind and temperature along with other vital weather related facts. If there is a control tower nearby, call the tower and ask for the winds on the surface. The reason for doing this is all conversation with the tower is recorded. If someone files a fabricated drift claim, the tower’s recording will be in your corner. And so, as always, be safe, have fun and make money.

ntsb reports
NTSB 2011 final report Editor’s Note: The following statistics were taken from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) records, indicating trends in ag-aviation accidents during 2011. It should be noted there has been no factoring for the number of hours flown in each type aircraft, as there is no way to accurately know this information, which can easily askew any assumptions. Ninety-nine ag-aviation accidents were reported in 2011, reflecting an increase by nine from the 90 reported in 2010 and 16 more accidents than the 83 that
were reported in 2009. 2011’s fatality number of eight is three more than 2010 and one more than 2009. The fatalities are higher in 2011 than in previous years as are the total number of accidents, but still less than 10 in 2006 and 14 in 2005, even with the likelihood of more hours flown in 2011. As in years past, most of the accidents in 2011 were in June, July and August with 22, 23 and 21 respectfully. However, different than in the past, both April (10) and May (14) experienced double digit accidents, while September had only

one accident. Every month of the year, except December, experienced at least one accident. Most likely, unprecedented weather patterns in 2011 affected when most flight time was logged. For the fourth consecutive year, California had the most accidents with 17, one more than last year. Arkansas came in second with 10. Last year, Texas was second with nine accidents. However, drought conditions in Texas reduced the number of hours flown with only five accidents. Oddly, Washington was third in the number of accidents with eight. Others states that don’t usually have as high of accident rate were Iowa and Montana with seven each and six in South Dakota.
Other states had five or less accidents. No accidents were reported in Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia and other northeastern states, except for one in New York. Tennessee, Oregon and Kansas reported no accidents per the NTSB. This year the most accidents were in Air Tractors with 25. In 2010, helicopters lead the way with 29% (26) accidents. This year helicopter accidents tied with Ag-Cats with 19 accidents each. For third position, Thrush aircraft had 17 accidents. The Air Tractor number should come as no surprise, since it represents the majority of the ag-aircraft in use. What should be a surprise, but proves to be

true every year, is the Ag-Cat accident rate with its lesser number of aircraft in the fleet. There is no simple answer for why that is; one could summarize it may be because of fewer experienced pilots and older planes. Cessna C-188s accidents were eight, Pawnees six, Dromader and Weatherly with two each and a single Eagle accident. This represents the entire fleet of ag-aircraft flying in the U.S. with at least one accident in each type except the GA-200. There are probably less Pawnee, Dromader, Weatherly and surely the Eagle ag-planes operating. As should be expected, these aircraft accident numbers are lower. It now becomes obvious, to really make any qualified assumptions, the number and type of
ag-aircraft and the number of hours each type of aircraft flies in a season are critical numbers that are missing from NTSB reports. Thus, all assumptions are simply that, assumptions. Most operators buy ag-planes for reasons other than safety; such as price, availability and productivity. Besides, relatively speaking, ag-planes are inherently crashworthy. Pilots should keep them out of trees and wires. They should have adequate fuel on board. It was unexpected to see the fatality number rise. However, for the fifth consecutive year this number has remained in the single digits. Every effort should be made to target zero fatalities. Ag aircraft accidents have been considerably less in the past several years from the traditional 150+ accidents

and 15+ fatalities in pre-PAASS years. American ag-pilots are flying smarter
due to participating in the PAASS program. Awareness is key. It allows for the education spoon to feed. Fatal accidents (and accidents in general) should be studied more closely, especially when 69% (68) of the accidents in 2011 were non-mechanical (that could mean pilot error). In 2010, that percentage was 63%. In 2009, the non-mechanical accident rate was 50%. All spray pilots should be extra careful in 2012, making it the safest year yet with the lowest number of accidents and fatalities. Zero accidents equates to zero fatalities.

High fuel prices require a fuel surcharge, but just how much? It could be a long hot summer for those that don’t have a business plan to cope with high fuel prices. Fuel price changes have a significant impact on individual, corporate and commercial operator budgets. More important for the commercial operator, fuel prices drastically impact profit. Does your business plan include a fuel surcharge that will preserve your profit? Now is the time to plan and calculate how much the fuel surcharge should be to maintain your Return On Investment (ROI). Accurately determining the fuel surcharge requires analyzing your after-tax cash flow as fuel prices vary. This is a complicated calculation and is best accomplished by using a financial model. All fixed and variable expenses associated with the aircraft should be included in the expenses for an assumed annual utilization, base fuel price and
average dollar per hour ($/Hr) revenue. Determine your ROI for a base fuel price and average $/Hr revenue. It is best to use a five-year time period due to depreciation variations year-to-year. The next step requires building a threecolumn table showing the revenue in $/Hr required to achieve the ROI base goal for different fuel prices. How? Input a new fuel price. For each fuel price, determine the $/Hr revenue required to equal the ROI base goal. This can be done using the “Goal Seek” feature in Excel. Record the fuel price in column one and the calculated $/Hr revenue in column two. The difference between the base case $/Hr revenue and the calculated $/Hr revenue for the new fuel price is recorded in column three. Column three is the fuel surcharge in $/ Hr needed to maintain the base ROI. Using the table you created, the total

dollar amount of the fuel surcharge billed to the customer equals the hours flown for the customer multiplied by the $/Hr surcharge. No matter how you bill, you need to collect the total dollar amount of the fuel surcharge to achieve your ROI goal. If you bill the customer in a unit different for $/Hr then you will need to make the conversion from $/Hr to the customer billing unit.
The important point is to collect for all the hours flown to complete the customer job from the time you left your base until you returned. Using an agricultural operator as an example, the operator might need to convert the $/Hr surcharge to a $/pound or $/acre surcharge. The important point is to collect for all the hours flown to complete the customer job from the time you left your base until you returned. This charge might include a long ferry distance or additional flying time due to the layout of the job requiring many short passes. To achieve the ROI goal the conversion factor from $/Hr to $/pound or $/acre must consider the extra flying. The fuel surcharge might vary from customer to customer depending on the difficulty of the job. Many ag operators pay the pilot a percentage of the gross revenue. The fuel surcharge should not be counted in the gross revenue used to calculate the pilot commission or you will not achieve the ROI goal. The type operation usually determines the conventional method of billing. No matter what method is used for billing, the end result must produce revenue that is greater than expenses in order to stay in business. Plan your ROI and bill to achieve this goal. The AircraftCostAnalysis program can be used to analyze your ROI for varying fuel prices. To obtain more information go to www.AircraftCostAnalysis.com
Turbine Conversions acquires Duke Metering System production rights Turbine Conversions, Ltd., located in Nunica, Michigan, recently purchased the production rights for the Duke Metering System from the late Jack Duke of Alabama. Bill Hatfield President of TCL wanted to add a dispersal gate to his offerings of innovative products for ag operators and with the 25-year proven record of the Duke Metering System, it was an easy decision to take over where Jack Duke left off. The Duke Metering System provides operators with an easy to install and calibrate system that provides ultra low volume (as low as 2lb/acre) distribution of seed and granular product. This system with its high quality construction, allows calibration while on the ground so there is minimum lose of product; once calibrated the operator will receive nearly perfect calibration every time. The system also allows the operator versatility of 2-20lb/acre delivery
of product. It will give operators opportunities to grow their businesses by offering a wide variety of application services.

The turboprop engine combines the elegant, robust design of the M601 engine with GE’s 3-D aerodynamic design techniques and advanced materials to create a more powerful, fuel-efficient, durable engine with no recurrent fuel nozzle inspections and no hot section inspection. The H80 engine will feature an extended service life of 3,600 flight-hours or 6,600 cycles between overhauls. It will provide the option of a single- or dual-acting governor, allowing customers to have flexibility in propeller selection. The first aircraft to enter service with the H80 engine will be the Thrush 510G agricultural aircraft. “The H80-powered Thrush 510G has exceeded our expectations during testing and we are close to receiving our aircraft certification,” said Payne Hughes, Thrush Aircraft’s President. “The new 510G offers major improvements in speed and capabilities, and we are excited about delivering this new aircraft to our customers very soon.” The improved Thrush 510G has a hopper capacity of 510 gallons, a gross weight of 10,500 pounds, and a 29,000-hour wing spar life with no mandatory inspections of the wing spars. The H80 engine has also been selected to power the Aircraft Industries L410 commuter aircraft. The H80-powered L410 aircraft has been flight testing since November 2011 and is expected to enter service later this year. Production ramp up for the H80 engines is underway at GE Aviation Czech, where the engines are manufactured. GE Aviation anticipates producing 70 H80 engines this year. TracMap appoints first South America distributor TracMap continues its expansion with the recent appointment of Eagle Copters South America as its first South American Distributor. Eagle Copters are based in Colina, which is just north of Santiago, Chile. From here they have extensive networks and are already accredited sales and service agents for both Bell Helicopters and Dart Helicopter Services. For General Manager Martin Busquets, the addition of TracMap GPS systems is a logical step. “Many of our existing customers undertake agricultural work as part of their operation. We know and understand how important it is for them to have an easy to use and reliable GPS guidance system. TracMap fits that requirement perfectly”. The appointment as TracMap distributor resulted from Martin’s attendance at Heli-Expo in Dallas in February. There he was introduced to TracMap by one of his existing customers who was also
at the show, and planning to purchase two TracMap units. Martin saw the level of interest in the TracMap stand, and immediately saw the potential of the system for a number of his customers.
Eagle Copters are based in Colina, which is just north of Santiago, Chile. For TracMap, the appointment of Eagle Copters allows them to better service the inquiries and sales they are already making into South America. “Its not a large percentage of our sales, but we see South America as a future growth area for us”, said TracMap President Colin Brown. “Eagle Copters are a great company with a very good reputation, and we are pleased to have such a
quality representation in the continent”. This latest appointment is a continuation of TracMap’s remarkable growth since committing to having a substantial and permanent presence in North American market just 18 months ago. Prior to that they had spent two years getting to know and understand the market and to be confident there was sufficient market potential to justify the investment. “It is all very well having a great product, but unless we have a good distribution network, we can’t provide the level of sales and after sales support needed to sustain a long term presence” said Mr Brown. That commitment has seen them expand to having 11 distributors, as well as establish a distribution base in Griffin, Georgia. It appears that commitment is starting to pay off, with Brown reporting very good interest as a result of attending a number of state conventions over the past winter.
Eagle Copters Commercial Manager Roberto Sieveking (left) with their first TracMap customer, Jordi Seron, a partner in Aero Flight Services. “We have always had a good level of sales into helicopters since we first arrived in this market”, said Colin,”but now we are getting similar inquiries from the fixed wing sector”. We will have between 30 and 40 additional units being installed in aircraft over the next couple of months, which is a great first step.
