360 degree video cameras?

While most of you, at least in the northern hemisphere, are buckling down working through the peak of the spray season, I’m sitting here in 95°F heat in Georgia planning for a 16-day trip to Brazil and Uruguay the end of July. I’ll get a break from the heat with these countries being in their winter. But, the last part of the trip in Uruguay promises to be too cold by my standards.

While in South America, I’ll be making the rounds visiting advertisers and subscribers between attending two conventions, one in each country.

The Brazilians have an excellent convention with an impressive attendance and over 120 exhibitors. It rivals NAAA’s ag-expo in many ways. The convention in Uruguay represents the countries of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay; with rotation between each country yearly. This convention will not be as large, much like a U.S. state trade show.

Having hung up my helmet and replaced it with a laptop, there is no light at the end of the tunnel anymore. AgAir Update demands year round attention with emphasis on winter months with convention travel. I’m not complaining, just noting. It’s a different life, but I consider myself fortunate to have been able to experience both ag-flying and ag-writing during my 45 years of agaviation. When you consider the overlap, I have been able to do each nearly equally; 27 years ag-flying and 34 years ag-writing. Where the heck did the time go?

If you remember in my May editorial titled, “You bought what?”, I was trying to wrap my head around Graham buying a drone to compliment our in-house photography. Well, this month’s cover photo about Matt Woolard in Arkansas was taken with that drone. Leave it to Graham to figure out a better way to do something! I’m impressed with the resulting

photographs and look forward to more creativity.

As if buying a drone was not enough, I saw an invoice come through this week for a 360 video camera. What is a 360 video camera? It is just what the name says. It takes video in a 360-degree spectrum. The plan is to mount the 360-degree video camera, along with a host of GoPros, on an AT-802 SEAT aircraft that will be participating with NAAA at EAA’s 2019 AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

From the 360° video, we should be able to make VR (Virtual Reality) videos where the viewer wears those funky glasses and by turning the head will see what a pilot sees while in the cockpit.

The Brazilians did this last year. They use it extensively to introduce the uninitiated to ag-flying for some of the best positive public relations that you can imagine. Their aircraft is a C-188 Ag-Truck, from takeoff to landing, going through a series of spray runs.

In the case of the AT-802, the viewer will have a front-row seat to the aerial firefighting demonstrations done during the world’s largest airshow. Speaking of aerial firefighting, you did know that AgAir Update removed its quarterly AirFire & Forestry section and debuted a brand-new magazine, AerialFire, right? The emphasis is on all that is aerial firefighting. If it turns out to be successful, I’m sure you will have an opportunity to enjoy this extremely interesting experience. By the time you read this, the videos should be online.

Matt Woolard was born and raised in agriculture, amongst the farm fields of Corning, Arkansas. Early on, Matt knew he wanted something a little different, but he wasn’t exactly sure what that was. His questions were soon answered when Matt met Cindy Coleman, daughter of Roy Coleman.

Roy was a long-time Arkansas operator who had branched off from Corning Farm Supply in 1981 to start his own agricultural aviation flying service with Ag-Cats. Roy bought serial number 2500, which is still flying today. ➤

Matt and Cindy had been married for about five years when Matt started working on the ground for Roy. Over the next few years, Matt earned an A&P rating to help the flying operation with maintenance. Soon after, in 2003, he obtained his Commercial Pilots License to become an agpilot.

During the middle of the 2006 flying season, Roy suffered from a health issue that forced Matt out of the cockpit and into an operation-management role. At the time, the duo were running a 510 Thrush and an AT-502. In 2008, they replaced the 510 Thrush for an AT-802. During these years, Matt continued managing the day to day operations and functioned as a relief pilot when needed.

Roy retired in 2015 and Matt purchased the flying service from him. By this time, the flying service had downsized to a single AT-802. From 2011-2018, one AT-802 covered most of the work that came in. Towards the end of the period, Matt found himself constantly calling in help. In 2018, Matt added to his fleet an AT-502 with an Aero Innovation’s Loadmaster prop. This extra aircraft helped with the additional workload and took some pressure off the AT-802.

For GPS guidance, the AT-802 is configured with a SATLOC G4 with flow control and a 10-inch hydraulic gate powered by the Vondrin controller. The AT-502 uses the SATLOC Bantam with flow control.

Aerial Triple Tip nozzles. Woolard Flying Service’s work consists of about 70% dry work, flying over mainly rice, corn and soybeans. Of that work, approximately 70% is rice. The company averages approximately four applications on rice, including a major pre-flood application of urea at 300 lbs/ acre. Using Chem-Man software has drastically helped his operation with pre and post application notifications to customers, as well as keeping the entire operation organized and compliant.

Woolard Flying Service has two full-time pilots, Jiles Wright and Noah Taylor. Jiles hales from Parkin, Arkansas and is on his 10th season. Noah Taylor began his career in southeast Iowa in a 450 Ag-Cat. Noah, too, comes from an agricultural background. He graduated from the now-defunct Flying Tigers Aviation program in 2015. Noah flew in Texas building ag time and has landed with Matt in Corning, Arkansas for his fourth season.

Matt is optimistic about the future of ag aviation. He sees new pilots coming into the business, more than in previous years and an

emergence of technology that will continue to increase safety and efficiency of aerial applications. In addition to running his flying service full-time, Matt also is a CFII and MEI. He maintains currency in his 58 Baron and teaches regularly. He is a graduate of the 2017 NAAA Leadership Training Program. This training helped Matt to successfully serve as the Arkansas Agricultural Aviation Association’s NAAA director.

Matt is thankful that he took the “different’ path so many years ago to become involved in agaviation as both a pilot and operator. He continues giving back to the industry that has given so much to him.

Agricultural aviation in Brazil grows every year due to large expansions of arable land and the high quality of the aerial applications for the control of insect pests, pathogens and weeds. This combination of yield and quality makes aerial application a national strategy for maintaining the productivity of various crops. However, aerial application is only advantageous when performed under a well-defined technical criteria. An aircraft with an uneven distribution pattern or inadequate droplet spectrum would cover a large area in an irregular manner due to high operational performance. So, the applicator needs to stay alert.

The creation of awareness programs, training, testing of technologies and methodologies to maintain the high standard of aerial applications are encouraged by several companies, consulting and teaching institutions and by public and private entities. As an example, SINDAG - National Union of Agricultural Aviation Companies, publishes specific online content for pilots and businessmen free of charge, SABRI, Sabedoria Agricola and DoPro Aircraft Clinic, multinationals for aerial applications with companies such as Bayer, Nufarm, Corteva, Syngenta, Ihara, UPL, FMC, among others that offer consulting options, A 16 | agairupdate.com

training, lectures and even online courses aimed at improving application technology.

However, in practice there is still little interest of pilots, companies and farms in participating in these actions and events. The justifications are always the same: “lack time”, “there is a lot of time involved”, “I already know what they are going to say and do” and the most often, “next time I participate”.

SABRI & DoPro Aircraft Clinics has noted in work carried out in Brazil the necessity of maintenance of spray nozzles and rotary atomizer nozzles. On average, out of every 10 aircraft checked, seven needed nozzle maintenance, which serves as a warning for professionals involved in agricultural aviation.

In the following photo, is an agricultural aircraft with several rotating nozzles damaged and wear on the discs. Each disc has “grooves” that are responsible for forming the droplets. In this case, the broken discs and worn grooves will produce droplets of varying diameters along the application range. As a consequence, phytotoxicity to the crop may occur due to the formation of very large droplets containing higher amounts of active ingredient. As well as application failure may

occur due to the formation of very fine droplets which may either evaporate or drift into non-target areas.

In the next photo is an image of a rotating nozzle with dirt obstructing the screen that is responsible for forming droplets.

The source of these impurities can range from product incompatibility of the tank mix, packaging of the products that accidentally fell into the premix tank or even the lack of cleaning of the spray system at the end of the day. The consequences are the same, the negative interference in the quality of the application.

In the next photo is an aircraft with one of the spray nozzle connection hoses leaking. Note that due to leakage, the back of the body of one of the nozzles is dyed with the nontoxic dye used during application assessments. In this case, visible injury to the crop may occur, as plants will probably receive uneven amounts of the applied product. It is worth mentioning, the cost per hectare of a poorly made application is also the same cost per hectare of a well-made application.

In the next photo is a curious example obtained during one of the SABRI & DoPro Aircraft Clinics. At first, it was just a sputtering nozzle and its negative effects on the uniformity of distribution. But when investigated further, the reason for the leak was the diaphragm in the nozzle antidrip system was made from an automotive tire tube. This practice is not recommended for two reasons: first, because of the high probabiliy of leaks due to the rubber usually being cut manually without following original dimensional specification; and secondly, because the adapted rubber has a thickness greater than the original diaphragm. To conclude the sequence of examples, this photo shows the effect of a binding spray atomizer having difficulty turning effecting product distribution uniformity. In the report generated by the SABRI & DoPro Aircraft Clinic, it is possible to note a peak in the deposition of product on the right side of the application range. This deposition accumulation can cause phytotoxicity to crops.

From these examples, it is concluded that it is important to carry out periodic maintenance of spray nozzles. The Brazilian market has several brands and types of atomoizers/nozzles.

Some of them are more durable and require less maintenance, but they still cannot be neglected. As a rule, it is recommended

to evaluate and maintain nozzles before the spray season starts.

However, it is suggested that during the season, checks are also made. The commitment to carry out aerial applications with quality, safety and economy requires such attention and effort.

As a final message, agricultural aviation is represented daily by each of us. It is the small details that make all the difference in maintaining a high quality standard for aerial applications. If each does its part, agribusinesses will always have agricultural aviation as the main strategy of secure food production.

After 54 years of various type flying, navy carrier pilot, corporate pilot, ag-pilot and CFII, retired I am content to sit on my porch on the edge of the Mississippi Delta have a cold adult beverage and listen to those beautiful ag-engines (especially round engines). I thank God that I am still above ground and can tell “sea stories” by the dozens to my grandchildren. There is a particular topic that I have touched on in a previous AgAir Update’s In My Opinion. I want to elaborate on it and maybe add a little emphasis. Actually, there are two subjects, but they are very closely related.

I think the first subject has to do with making

a forced landing in the worse imaginable location.

To quote the original “Right Stuff” pilot Mr. Bob Hoover, “Fly the airplane all the way into the crash.” Another way to say the same thing is never try to “stretch a glide.” If there is a more preferred landing place just a little bit ahead of the projected impact place, do not try to stretch the glide. Under these circumstances, with adrenaline pumping at 100 psi, you may become fixated on stretching the glide to the more preferred touchdown spot and in all probability you will totally disregard the stall warning that is screaming at you, or the stick which is about to shake right out of your hands.

The airplane will stall, and you will land in a nearly vertical, nose down attitude. Your chances of survival are slim to none.

Fly that bird all the way into the crash. If landing in a heavily wooded area, try to pick out two huge oak trees and use the rudder (it never stalls) to guide the aircraft right between the two trees.

I learned the lesson and lived to tell about it. Maybe another rookie will learn from my mistake.

Related to the first topic is hammer head turns or simply trying to fly outside of the safety envelope of your ability or the airplane’s. Hammerhead turns (stalls) are for skilled aerobatic pilots, not ag-pilots. In either of the aforementioned circumstances, the airplane impacts the ground nearly vertical.

In a previous In My Opinion article, I made it clear that my beef is not so much with the ag-pilot who consistently makes hammerhead turns. If he wants to bust his buns, which eventually will surely happen, that’s fine. However, the terrible example he is setting for the rookie ag-pilot who watches and admires that pilot making hammerhead turns is what makes my blood boil. In My Opinion, when that rookie pilot augers one in while attempting to emulate the other more seasoned ag pilot, that senior ag pilot is partially responsible for the rookie’s death.

I know what I’m talking about, because when I was practicing making ag turns in the early spring of 1971, before I ever even carried my first load of chemicals, I stalled the PA-25235 Pawnee in a steep turn. The nose dipped about 45 degrees.

I barely managed to level the airplane before it slammed into the ground, busting both landing gear bungees. Thank you Lord that I learned the lesson and lived to tell about it. Maybe another rookie will learn from my mistake.

These terms are part of the DynaFlight systems unique capabilities to make operations for both the operators and for the pilots simple, easy and reliable. Simplicity = Productivity.

“Drag & Drop” is when you have created or downloaded your polygon files from your provider, Co-op or Google Earth, you simply copy and paste or “Drag & Drop” those files onto a USB Thumb Drive folder and then plug the USB Thumb Drive into the USB slot on the front of the DynaFlight GPS System. Now comes the “Hot Swap”, while the system is operational in the aircraft, by plugging in this USB Thumb Drive, the DynaFlight automatically uploads these files as Jobs into the

system under the appropriate Import name, such as AgriSmart, Surety, Chem Man, Google Earth, AgSync, etc. After that, by simply selecting the job, it is ready to fly. There is no limit to the number of these Jobs or Polygons.

A further feature of “Hot Swap” is that when you insert the USB Thumb Drive for automatic upload, it will also automatically download onto the USB Thumb Drive all the Job and Polygon work that you have done up to that moment in time. These files are “As Applied” map data that are ready to look at in you providers software as well as Google Earth files for Google Earth. Also, you can have many of these USB Thumb Drives working in rotation so that throughout the day, ➤

as the jobs are required, simply inserting the USB into the DynaFlight system, while the aircraft is at loading area, the job upload and download can be accomplished in mere seconds without the pilot needing to interface.

As the data storage in the DynaFlight system can store years of flown data, at the end of a season or any period of time in between, we have another “Hot Swap” feature that you can set the DynaFlight system up to download some or all of your work for any period of time, and, it will do so on simple insertion of the USB Thumb Drive.

As an example, at the end of your season, you can ask for the system to download all of your work the last 6 months or even year and when the USB Thumb Drive is inserted, the system will automatically download all those files.

Now, even nicer DynaFlight feature on this “Hot Swap” capability, is that it does not matter from which polygon provider you uploaded the file from or even if you have done a Free Form file without polygons, all of the jobs can be downloaded in any of the formats you want whether it be Google Earth, AgriSmart, Agsync, Surety, etc.

Ministry of Agriculture Seeks Regulation for Agriculture Drone Spray Operations in Brazil Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture has begun the process of regulating control of drone use for aerial application of pesticides recently, drafting a set of regulations.

Regulatory oversight will include provisions for allowing aerial application via drones to deliver agrochemicals in areas where aircraft cannot deploy chemicals safely, namely in areas where terrain becomes a significant obstacle for other application methods such as agricultural machinery or backpack spraying.

The Ministry stated in documentation released on the new regulations that this regulatory effort will lead to a safer and more efficient and economical application of pesticides in Brazil that will meet the demands of the national agriculture market.

The announced regulations will affect drones in the Class III category – relating to aircraft between 250 g and 25 kg. The other categories - Class I, weighing more than 150 kg and Class II, from 25-150 kg - will continue to follow Normative Instruction No 02/2008, which covers agricultural aviation work standards.

Further instruction in the regulation will require all spray drone operators to be registered with the Ministry, proving qualification to their A 28 | agairupdate.com

Companies using drone application methods for spraying would also be required to have an agronomist, a remote agricultural pilot certified by the Ministry, and an agricultural technician on staff who has completed a course in agricultural aviation for field missions.

Farmers wishing to complete their own agricultural spraying operations would also be required to hire an agricultural engineer, and a certified remote agricultural pilot. Companies and farmers alike would have to make detailed reports of each operation, which must be kept on file for at least two years, ready to be produced on demand if required to Ministry inspectors who are expected to periodically check nationwide operations at random.

The Ministry’s precision agriculture coordinator Fabricio Juntolli stated that drone technology is becoming heavily used in spraying high value crops such as strawberries, flowers, and over small areas as a replacement for backpack sprayers, cutting down significantly on manpower requirements while increasing efficiency for safer application of agrochemicals.
