After more than four decades of visiting and talking with ag-pilots from around the world, I have come to the conclusion there are three categories of ag-pilots. I’ll simply refer to them as Category One, Category Two and Category Three. These three categories do not necessarily include all ag-pilots, but I feel they represent most ag-pilots. Category One, The Newbie. Category Ones are young ag-pilots who have very low to moderately low ag-time. They are eager and quick of mind; translated to be quick reflexes. They depend heavily upon these two traits to stay alive in the ag-aviation world. Two important traits they are missing, through no fault of their own, are experience and wisdom. These two traits are acquired over time, which they have not yet had the opportunity to develop. Category Two, The Ag-Pilot Category Twos are mid-time, not too young and not too old ag-pilots. They have possibly thousands of ag-hours in more than one type ag-aircraft. It has taken them years to log this time and with that comes experience and wisdom. In their favor, they are also still quick of mind. These are the safest and most productive ag-pilots. Category Three, The Old Timer Category Threes are the older, high-time agpilots. When I write “older”, I mean either approaching 60 years old or even older. Keep in mind, the FAA requires mandatory

retirement of airline pilots at 65 for good reasons. Although Category Three ag-pilots may not have the quick of mind they once had, what they do have is experience and wisdom. These two important traits, only possessed by Category Two and Category Three ag-pilots, gives them an undeniable edge. In the case of the Category Three ag-pilot, this offsets the reduced quick of mind. How can I make such a deduction that experience and wisdom can replace quick of mind? It is evident when talking to ag-pilots of all three categories and reading NTSB accident reports, that experience and wisdom keep pilots out of scenarios that require a high degree quick of mind. For instance, Category Three ag-pilots may decide to stop flying for a lunch break. Or, they may recognize their limitations and cut their loads back, taking an extra load during the work day. Quick of mind is an involuntary reflex. Whereas, experience and wisdom is a detailed, thought out process with time to weigh options. These three ag-pilot categories explain why I hesitate to encourage older pilots to become ag-pilots. When a 50-plus year old pilot tells me he is going to ag-pilot school and become an ag-pilot, I think of the three categories and he, or she, does not fit. From the start, that pilot has both the disadvantages of the Category One ag-pilot and the Category Three agpilot; lack of quick of mind, experience and wisdom. Of course, there are exceptions and the ag-school is the best way for this “out-of-
category” ag-pilot to find out if he can survive to become a Category Three ag-pilot. Where do you fit within these three ag-pilot categories? If you can identify yourself, then you have the mindset that will keep you safe during long days of ag-flying. If you are Cat 1, then don’t push the envelope. The same can be said about Cat 3, but I’m willing to bet the Cat 3 ag-pilot already realizes this without a doubt. Although there may be a greater number of Cat 2 ag-pilots, and that they have all the best traits, that fact alone could create complacency. As long as any category agpilot recognizes where he, or she, is in their ag-flying career, then they should succeed. This is important as the consequences could be unacceptable. Production Test Pilots

There is a time, long before the leading edges fade and metal skins stain; long before tires are replaced and hot sections are performed; before the aircraft gets the distinctive ag plane smell and before its idiosyncratic flight characteristics are discovered, that it is brand-new, never-flown, fresh off the factory production line. Teams of designers, engineers, fabricators, machinist, mechanics, pilots and inspectors worked in cohesion to transform pieces of metal, fiberglass and plastic into a tool that pilots, over the course of the aircraft’s life, would become intimately familiar. However, before the new agricultural aircraft is delivered to the new owner, a small group of individuals are responsible for testing switches, clamps, fittings; documenting the initial performance, leak checking, ground running, stall handling and ground tracking; and most importantly for ensuring each aircraft is held to the highest standard of safety. These people are ag-aircraft manufacturers’ production test pilots. Today’s agricultural aviation industry is fortunate, as most know, to have two agricultural aircraft manufacturers actively producing new ag planes year-round. Although production numbers vary between each manufacturer, similarities of rigorous production flights are almost identical. Air Tractor, Inc., based in Olney, Texas, has a production

Thrush Chief Pilot Terry Humphrey performs a final check before flight testing of a Thrush 510P
29 years, and worked in the Fabrication Shop as well as in Research and Development before coming to the Flightline team. Thrush Aircraft, based in Albany, Georgia, employs three Test Pilots: Terry Humphrey, Robert Garrett and J.D. Scarborough. Chris Pollack, Andy Kimbrell and Richard Paul serve as Thrush Aircraft’s A&P/IAs for production tests. Rhodes and Humphrey, both Chief Test Pilots, have long histories with their respective companies. Terry Humphrey has been a figure in ag aviation since the 1970s. He has worked for Thrush Aircraft, off and on since the days of Fred Ayres (Thrush was then known as Ayres Corporation). Terry has extensive experience testing Thrush airframes and actively ag flying. Terry returned to Thrush Aircraft in 2010 after a 10-year flying contract with the U.S. State Department in Colombia. Mike Rhodes began as an Engineer at Air Tractor in 2001, then left to work in the corporate Part 135 charter world for three years. He returned in 2007 to fill the test pilot position vacated by Troy Vaught. Mike is also a carded SEAT and FireBoss pilot. Brent Colvin, a 2nd generation ag pilot, comes from a long and extensive background of agricultural flying. His 35-plus years of experience ag flying teamed with Mike’s engineering background and firefighting experience compliment Air Tractor’s production team.
Each new aircraft rolls off the production line, both Air Tractor and Thrush, signed off as airworthy by the company-employed Designated Manufacturing Inspection Representative (DMIR). Terry Wooldridge, one of Air Tractor’s DMIRs, uses an inspection light to look for any leaks around the firewall of an Air Tractor AT-502B representative of the FAA who works with a specific company (Air Tractor, Thrush) and is able to perform functions such as issuing original airworthiness certificates, conducting conformity inspections, issuing export certificates of airworthiness, etc. They report to the FAA Manufacturing Inspection District Offices (MIDO) and are responsible for ensuring that airplanes meet the requirements set forth in the Manufacturing Certificates. Let’s follow two new aircraft, an Air Tractor AT-802A and a Thrush 510P as they move from the assembly line to the customer. The new AT-802A will be delivered to the production Flightline team signed off by one of Air Tractor’s DMIRs, as will the 510P when its inspection and checklist are signed by the Thrush DMIR. The Air Tractor team will then perform leak and pressure testing of the hopper and spray system of the AT-802A. Hoppers are pressurized and spray systems actuated. The aircraft isn’t flown for this test. After the AT802A passes leak tests and any discrepancies addressed, the aircraft begins its engine set-up, ground runs and prop balancing. In contrast, the Thrush 510P will immediately begin ground run testing of its engine and a dynamic balance of the propeller (the spray system leak and pressure testing are done in a later phase, while in flight) after the fuel system has been filled, fuel gauges calibrated and tanks leak tested. Interestingly, the fuel tanks are pressurized with air on the assembly line and checked for leaks there, as well. These ground runs are data mines for engine parameters. Once engine ground runs and propeller balancing are accomplished, the 510P will be released to the production test pilot for flight testing. All aircraft that leave both factories have initial data on that airframe and engine serial number that is recorded in a permanent record. This allows for future owners to have a reference point to how the aircraft was handling, what power it was producing and any recurrent squawks that the production pilots encountered when it was brand new. aircraft are thoroughly critiqued and preflighted by the pilots before they begin flight testing. If any squawks are found, the aircraft are sent back to production mechanics for the entire team to resolve. Once the pilots are satisfied with the condition of the aircraft, then the pilot signs off that the aircraft is ready for flight testing, which then moves the aircraft into the production flight testing phase. The team of pilots, mechanics and engineers all must agree on the readiness of the aircraft before it moves to flight testing. “The Production Flight Test job is rewarding to me because I feel like I spend every day doing something that matters. Rather than spending years working on some small part of some huge project, my Team has several hundred very specific small projects per year, and there is real definition when one project is finished and the next one is started. I drive home every evening either having accomplished my goal for the day, or not. When we deliver a perfect airplane to a happy customer, that is the indication that we accomplished that small task. Fasteners and attach points are triple checked on the aircraft, then the first takeoff is performed. Test pilots of both aircraft record aircraft ground tracking and engine full-power readings as they begin their initial takeoff roll. A climb to altitude allows time to record engine parameters during each altitude block and also gives the pilot a feel of the aircraft’s trim.

The pilots take both airframes to Vne dives, ensuring that enough trim is available and cognisant of vibrations and noise. Mike Rhodes explains “flying the airplane up to its redline airspeed is a good check for wind noise, giving us a good feel for how well the windshield and cockpit doors are sealed. We pay attention to the subtle differences in feel and sound; if something sounds or feels different, we take a closer look.”

We use the extra flight time to look for electrical anomalies, uneven fuel flow from the mains to the header tank, etc., or anything that may show up with a little time. We rather have those resolved before delivery, so the airplane is in the best shape possible for the customer.”
“Mike or I have flown every aircraft off this production line. We know how they are supposed to sound and we know how they are suppose to feel. This translates to something as simple as a trim tab adjustment here or a hinge adjustment there,” explains Brent Colvin.
During the second round of flight testing, Terry Humphrey, Robert Garrett or J.D. Scarborough will fill the 510P hopper to maximum capacity then test the spray system and general handling characterics of the aircraft loaded in flight, as well as for hopper lid and spray system leaks. After the second round of flight testing for the 510P, any squawks are addressed and the aircraft is sent to a Thrush dealer for its final configuration before delivery to the customer. An exception is for an international delivery, where the aircraft is outfitted with optional equipment, radios and a ferry fuel system if the aircraft is to be flown to its destination.
After the first series of flight tests for the AT-802 in this example and with any squawks resolved, the aircraft is flown again and is ready to go to an Air Tractor dealer for delivery. Air Tractor dealers install the finishing touches on the aircraft, from customer requested GPS units, specialized avionics, unique spray systems; almost anything the customer wants.
In the final stage of this journey, Air Tractor and Thrush customers receive their new aircraft in pristine condition. Before buyers have the chance to dull leading edges and wear out tires, or even have a soot stain on the engine cowling, they can be confident production test pilots have paid close attention to the most minute details to ensure their new aircraft is as safe as it possibly can be.

The manuals, available online as Acrobat PDF files, can be accessed in the Owner Portal of airtractor.com, reports Jeff Dobbs, Air Tractor’s Customer Service Manager. “We’re always looking for ways to improve our customer’s experience with his aircraft,” says

This improves accuracy and clarity when the customer orders parts or performs maintenance. Storm Aeronautics showcases state-of-the-art facility Expanded facility improves safety for ag-aircraft; like-new Ag-Cats

One of the most popular STCs held by Storm Aeronautics is its Storm Cutters. These are steel blades attached to the front of the gear legs for all model Air Tractors, series 300-800. These steel blades that are hard cased to 61 Rockwell Hardness, equal to a file or chisel, can cut through most inadvertently encountered wires while in flight. It took three years of development and research to bring Storm Cutters to the ag-aviation marketplace.
In 2016, Hershey Flying Service changed its name to Storm Aeronautics and moved from Hershey, Nebraska to David City, Nebraska. The new facility is 22,000-square feet with heated floor, new CNC machining equipment, paint booth, aircraft fuselage and wing jigs and anything needed for a major repair and manufacturing facility. Known for being “Everything Ag-Cat... and more�, Storm Aeronautics also holds multiple STCs and parts PMAs for other ag-aircraft, including Weatherly, Brave, Thrush and Air Tractor. The company has the ability to develop both PMAs and STCs. It can conduct heavy maintenance on all ag-aircraft, especially the Ag-Cat. At
Storm Cutters are well-built. They have spacer blocks that strengthen the blade. The top two clamps have grip tape to help with footing while standing on the gear leg. The Adel clamps on the back side of the clamps secure brake lines, instead of black zip ties.

The Storm Shield was tested at the National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) lab in Wichita, Kansas. During the destructive testing, the Storm Shield failed at a 240 inch-pound impact versus failure at 30 inch-pound for an OEM windscreen. During a non-scientific test, Storm Aeronautics shot the Storm Shield at close range (20 feet) with a 9mm hollow point bullet. In one test, the bullet did not penetrate the glass but lodged in the windscreen. New CNC machining equipment at the Storm Aeronautics facility in David City, Nebraska. According to the NTSB, in the 18 years from 1995-2013 there were 1,791 FAA Part 137 accidents in the U.S. Of those, 218 were collisions with wires, 12.2%. Of the 1,791 accidents, 173 were fatal, almost 10%, of which 30 fatal accidents were the result of wire strikes. This means 17.3% of all fatal accidents during this 18-year period were linked to wire strikes. Furthering Storm Aeronautics’ efforts to improve safety in ag-aviation, it introduced the Storm Shield windscreen for both Air Tractor and

The Storm Shield offers superior clarity. The Storm Shield STC is for all Air Tractor three-piece windscreens and Thrush aircraft. It is also approved in Canada. There are over 200 Storm Shields in service. In addition to Storm Cutters and the Storm Shield, Storm Aeronautics recently acquired the STC for the Custom Air Tailwheel Conversion. This single yoke style tailwheel is designed for rugged use on Air Tractor 600 and 800 series aircraft. The tailwheel has many excellent features, but most notably is stopping tailwheel shimmy. Storm Aeronautics’ tailwheel assembly is manufactured and installed with all new components except for the main housing that attaches
to the tailwheel spring. The standard one piece tailwheel saddle with its vertical tube is replaced by two pieces; a vertical spindle with bearings on each end and a yoke-style tailwheel assembly. By replacing the upper brass bushing in the tailwheel housing with a bearing and race, the load is better distributed and a retaining nut at the top allows a measured 185 foot-pounds of torque be applied to it. A cover goes over the nut that helps keep moisture and the elements for entering the housing. The lower half of the assembly is attached by four bolts and nuts to the upper half, allowing replacement of one without the other, if needed. bare ribs and spars for a complete reskinning, replace fabric and make fuselage repairs in the company’s jigs. “We salvage all that we can when a damaged Ag-Cat comes to us,” says Jared. “The aircraft is rugged as hell.” One of the STCs held by Storm Aeronautics is the Fat Cat conversion. This STC allows for the widening of all A-model and B-model airframes, serial numbers 1-B through 548B, to accept a 500-gallon hopper.

This allows for a hubcap on each side of the wheel, keeping out contaminants. In the past, typically the wheel had to be replaced in less than 1,000 hours of fertilizing. However, with hubcaps protecting it, this is no longer necessary. The conversion kit comes complete with new tire, tube, wheel and axle. Although Storm Aeronautics has addressed safety issues and other improvements for Thrush and Air Tractor aircraft, its specialty still remains the enduring Ag-Cat. With more than 13 STCs for the AgCat, Storm Aeronautics can perform almost any needed service to the Ag-Cat. An Ag-Cat brought in for repairs can be stripped down to

A most vulnerable spot The importance of proper torque by Jennifer Caron
The so-called little things in life can make a big difference, especially in the realm of aircraft maintenance. One such item is the application of proper torque, an increasingly important safety topic in aviation maintenance. From 2009 to 2015, over 45 aircraft incidents and accidents resulted from improper torque applied to engine fasteners during maintenance, resulting in a loss of propellers, internal engine damage, and powerplant failures. It’s no exaggeration to say that in many cases, it’s a case of do or die. “Torque procedures are a critical component of your maintenance process,” says Jim Hein, former airworthiness lead for the FAA Safety Promotion Program Office (SPPO). “It is essential for maintenance technicians to determine what torque is required for each application and then properly apply that amount of torque to ensure the integrity of the aircraft and help prevent fatal accidents.” So what is torque, and why is it so important?

Torque is the specified force (the tightening down) that you need to apply to fasteners (nuts, bolts). It is not a finger-tight feeling that you’ve turned it just enough. Torque is the specific range, as prescribed in the aircraft’s maintenance manual, for the twisting, turning force needed to create the proper tension. The tension you create is what makes fasteners perform the way the engineers intended.
You Must Remember This
An important rule is to use a calibrated torque wrench every time you torque your fasteners. Here’s why. If you don’t apply the proper torque force per the manual, fasteners can fail, the nut and bolt threads can strip, and the fastening hardware can loosen.

During the aircraft’s design process, the aerospace engineer selects the particular fasteners that can withstand the various vibrations and fluctuations in loads, pressures, and temperatures that the aircraft may experience. The engineer also specifies the foot-pound rating for proper torque on those fasteners, as well as the required lubricants that will allow the fasteners to turn and create the proper tension. You can find these specifications in the aircraft maintenance manual. The engineers designed the ratings for that particular aircraft, engine, or application. If the manual provides a different torque rating than what you’re used to applying,

If you apply too much torque, you could stress and overstretch the fastener, which will cause it to fail. If you under-torque it, the fastener will not attach properly and will loosen over time causing fretting wear and tear, and early fastener failures. Another critical rule is to avoid distractions. If you do get distracted when you’re doing a fastening job, STOP. Go back three steps to reinspect your work.

Torque Turning Point
To help prevent fatal accidents due to failure of the powerplant system, the General Aviation Joint Steering Committee (GAJSC) examined National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reports that included system component (powerplant) failure as a causal factor. An in-depth study of six fatal accidents, where inadequate bolt torque led to powerplant failures or loss of propellers, led the GAJSC System Component Failure-Powerplant (SCF-PP) Working Group to determine that this is a critical maintenance safety topic that is often overlooked. As a result, the GAJSC SCF-PP Working Group developed a maintenance safety enhancements program aimed at mitigating the risk of improper torqueing techniques and increasing awareness about the importance of proper torque. As part of this effort, the FAA Safety Program Promotion Office is developing an Airworthiness Topic of the Quarter for fiscal year 2018, along with a new online course on proper torqueing techniques that will be available beginning January 1, 2019. 30 years - only the beginning for Terra Aviação Agrícola by Bill Lavender
“Time goes by fast! We started Terra Aviação Agrícola in October 1988. Together with my partner at the time, Luis Afonso Dias da Silva, we had the objective of bringing sustainability to our professional lives. It seems like yesterday when we had a conversation with the Lima brothers (owners of Águia Aviação Agrícola in Ponta Grossa, PR), who believed in our dream to start an ag aviation company and helped us significantly in the acquisition of our first aircraft,” remembers Júlio Kämpf, one of the three owners of Terra Aviação Agrícola. “In the beginning, the office was a small house with so many weeds around it we had to ‘hoe’ them to clear a way for the airplane and to begin operations,” recalls Júlio Kämpf. According to Júlio, one of the important

factors for the beginning success of the company was great teamwork. “It’s amazing how we could coordinate everything so well in an age without cell phones, the Internet or DGPS. Imagine launching three aircraft from 5 o’clock in the morning until dusk and everything worked.” Júlio first flew ag-aviation for Astral after graduating from CAVAG in Sorocaba SP in 1982. He returned to his home town of Cachoeira do Sul and flew for Aero Agricola Santos Dumont (AASD) for two years. He then leased and later bought an Ipanema from AASD to form Terra Aviação Agrícola with his partner, Luis Diaz, who later retired. At the beginning of Terra Aviação Agrícola’s third year in operation, it bought a new 1991 Ipanema, PT-UFQ, that it still operates to this day. It is the only Ipanema in the four ag-aircraft fleet. The other three aircraft are Cessna C-188s.
In 2012, Mário Kämpf, Júlio’s brother and Eduardo Schroeder became partners in Terra Aviação Agrícola. Mário and Eduardo used to own and operate SK Aviação Agrícola, also in Cachoeira do Sul. However, the three decided it would be better to form a partnership in Terra Aviação Agrícola that now utilizes four ag-aircraft and is also the Brazilian dealer for VEKTOR DGPS, a division of the Canadian company DynaNav. The other two pilots are Lucas Schwab and Leandro Rodrigues. Leandro started with Terra Aviação Agrícola last season. Mário has been flying ag for 31 years, Eduardo for six years and Lucas for five years. Mário, Eduardo and Lucas like to refer to themselves in a lighthearted way as cartoon characters Wally Walrus, Uncle Scrooge and Goofy, respectively. Despite many difficult times for agriculture and the Brazilian economy, with its ups and downs, Terra Aviação Agrícola has always

Of the four agaircraft, two operate in Cachoeira do Sul and two operate in Miranda. At the Nero Moura Municipal Airport in Cachoeira do Sul, Terra Aviação Agrícola has a 3,500-square meter (35,000 S.F.) hangar adjacent to the runway. Currently, Terra has 12 employees at its bases in Cachoeira do Sul and Miranda. After logging over 15,000 ag flying hours in the last 33 years, today Júlio handles the administrative duties of the company. In addition to its aerial application services, Terra Aviação Agrícola is the Brazilian representative for VEKTOR DGPS. This DGPS was developed with the help of

We helped develop it until the project was sold in 2014 to the Canadian company DynaNav, who improved the system and put it in the market,” says Júlio. Mário and Eduardo handle the sales division of VEKTOR DGPS. The VEKTOR DGPS is a simple system with an exceptionally bright lightbar and with an anti-reflective system. In addition, the interface is simple and intuitive. “That is, the pilot does not need to study extensive manuals to operate it,” says Júlio. The system can be used in any agricultural aircraft and works with both the United States GPS and the Russian Glonass GPS. The future of Terra Aviação Agrícola includes bolder projects such as crop monitoring by aerial imaging and the precision use of drones in agriculture, including spraying. For this, the company is testing and investing in a system of multispectral capture of images. In
addition, next year, Terra Aviação Agrícola’s aircraft fleet will also have unmanned aircraft, both for capturing images and for applying products to crops. For monitoring, the company Cessna C-170 will be used over large areas and a drone for smaller areas. “The spray version of the drone will allow both small areas and complement work in larger areas such as near power grids, difficult terrain or near environmentally sensitive areas,” explains Eduardo. “The drone will not only increase Terra Aviação Agrícola’s services, but will allow the company to bring more security to small farmers. In practice, this means the drone service will have the same technical quality as Terra Aviação Agrícola’s agaviation - a responsible agricultural engineer, an agricultural technician with specialization and highly qualified operators.” Júlio Kämpf goes even further in his reasoning, “The natural tendency is for the drone to replace backpack sprayers - there

application is necessary, which could be done by airplane or drone. The next step will be crop imaging that interfaces with ground equipment such as planters and harvesters that are connected to DGPS. This will create a complete record and history of the crop with a diagnosis of what is needed to be done at each point. This will make aerial treatment even more accurate and economical,” concludes Júlio Kämpf.

Best practices for your fuel system during high season operations During the grueling pace of high season operation, the basics of aircraft and engine maintenance may slip to the wayside in favor of an extra spray job or getting home to see family at the end of the day. Even experienced pilots can become complacent and forget the necessity of a few key operating steps that can extend engine life or avoid unwanted repair costs. Recent field events have been directly driven by overlooking some of the fuel system practices below. Even as some regions edge closer to completing another flying season, reminders about long-term maintenance for the aircraft’s fuel system are good lessons for us all. Conducting a proper pre-flight check per the aircraft POH (Pilot’s Operating Handbook) is the most important step for eliminating or reducing long-term impacts of water contamination in an aircraft fuel system. Performing this step is critical for functionality of the fuel delivery system. Failure to do so could jeopardize pilot safety and invalidate the engine warranty.

components and reduced engine performance “During recent on-site troubleshooting for an apparent fuel system issue, several pints of water were drained from the aircraft sumps. The operator was surprised by the amount of cruddy water that had accumulated in the system,” said Lubos Hrdina, a GE Aviation field service engineer. “Stagnant water causes corrosion of fuel system components and reduced engine performance. In this specific case, the fuel control unit had to be replaced due to water contaminationcaused corrosion.” Making sure your on-site fuel farm and delivered fuel are free of water may reduce disruption and unexpected costs, especially during longterm storage. Draining on-site fuel storage containers is recommended on a regular basis to remove accumulated water. A robust fuel storage system should have fuel-water separators and high quality (two microns) fuel filters to help reduce contamination. As always, operators should refer to aircraft or engine manufacturers with specific questions about maintenance practices. For additional information, please refer to FAA Advisory Circulars AC 20-29B (Use of Aircraft Fuel Anti-Icing Additives), AC 20-43C (Aircraft Fuel Control), and AC 150/5230-4B (Aircraft Fuel Storage, Handling, Training, and Dispensing on Airports). These fuel system best practices will help prolong equipment life and improve safety margins while reducing business interruptions.
