Putting more food on the table. Agricultural aviation plays a vital role in increasing the world’s food supply – and it’s time to spread the word. That’s why we’ve launched the Feeding the World campaign. It’s a program designed to build awareness and appreciation for what ag pilots and their aircraft do to bring more food to more tables every day. Those of us in the business may take it for granted – but an increasingly hungry planet simply can’t. No matter what you fly, we’re proud to support you. Because feeding more folks is a cause well worth flying for. For more information on the Feeding the World campaign, or to learn more about our aircraft, visit us online – or call Eric Rojek at 229.789.0437.

Towers and a Magazine
I Ag-pilots have to spray around intimidating obstacles. Caution cannot be overemphasized.
A 6 | agairupdate.com
t is shocking to realize the U.S. ag-aviation community has lost three pilots to each hitting a tower during the 2018 season. Ironically, two were affiliated with closely related companies in Oklahoma. The third accident happened the first days of October in Texas. Tragedies, for sure. Within about three weeks and 50 miles of each other, two pilots flying in Oklahoma were killed when their aircraft impacted different structures in separate accidents. Nobody really knows why this happens. Evidently, distraction could be a factor in the case of the two Oklahoma accidents, since both involved contact with the towers’ guy wires while spraying. The third Texas accident was at dusk or dark while ferrying. Was the tower properly marked? At this writing, it is too early to know more details. Regardless, we have lost three pilots to towers. There are plenty of towers of all heights in the ag-spraying environment. Knowing this, and to continue not ferrying at 500 feet AGL, only invites trouble. However, ag-pilots have to spray around these intimidating obstacles. Caution cannot be overemphasized. I didn’t know the last two pilots, but I did know Andy Deterding. By all accounts, Andy was an excellent pilot with many thousands of ag hours. So, how does this happen to the experienced agpilot? It surely means that no ag-pilot is exempt. There can be multiple reasons why an ag-pilot hits a tower; possibly he simply never saw it, he looked down, distracted, at the very worst possible
moment, or he misjudged the distance between the tower and/or its guy wires and the aircraft. I would speculate that in most incidences, an aircraft accident involving a tower will be ruled by the NTSB as pilot error. Does pilot error indicate an accident could have been avoided? Maybe. The point of this commentary is there are an inordinate number of tower-related accidents. With each season, tower vigilance must increase. On a brighter note, have you noticed the difference in AgAir Update? The November edition introduces the all new glossy-finish magazine format. Everyone here has worked very hard to bring this to our readers and we surely hope you like it! Almost two years ago, we changed from newspaper to magazine format for Latin editions printed in Brazil. Oddly enough, we found increased costs for this change were acceptable there. It has taken a little longer for the printing economics to follow in the U.S. Although a bit more expensive to print a magazine, we feel the improvement will be worth it. Your comments are welcome! Until next month, Keep Turning…

Editor’s Note: This letter was received before the devastating arrival of Hurricane Michael, October 10, that decimated most of the “Forgotten Coast” of the Florida Panhandle. I hope that you and your family are very well, I write you to know how you are with the hurricane. I hope it has not affected you or any family that you have on the coast. accomplish that feat. I think far more onerous could have been the ingress of carbon monoxide. A well maintained and properly flown Fletcher is a really good, safe workhorse and, in my opinion, the most suitable for our conditions here in New Zealand. The only aircraft that came into the same category would be the Beaver. It is interesting that many pilots have flown a full working life just flying a Fletcher and some have never marked an aircraft; this is after possibly 25,000 hours and probably 300,000 loaded take offs. Have a great day. Andy Steverson, Gisborne New Zealand
Also, I took these pictures of Lachlan’s custom made Lego Thrush that we completed last night. I thought the model turned out amazing. We are definitely enjoying family time together in the off season. Hope you are doing well. Brady and Lachlan Penner. Weatherford, OK
G’day Andy, Well, I’d be the last person to disagree with you, or Mike for that matter. I’ve only made one flight in a Cresco (turbine Fletcher). It’s really needless to state, but I will anyway; it is an impressive machine. Until an ag-pilot has experienced working the Fletcher/Cresco from a New Zealand airstrip (poor word choice, more like a very short hilly pasture), the New Zealander ag-pilot skills cannot be rightly appreciated. —Bill
Fletcher Just need to put the Fletcher in perspective in regards to Mike Feeney’s comments. The Fletcher came into service in 1954 at 220 horsepower. There have been maybe 350 in service for over 70 years now and some 40 or more still going as 400 hp or turbine conversions. Over this time they may have clocked at an educated guess, 5 million hours. I have operated many Fletchers over 50 years and do not agree with Mike’s comments. Although fuel on board obviously is a danger, but an essential item. Let’s not forget that a lot of guys would smoke all day while flying and a big flaming lighter was needed to

Good Evening Mr. Lavender, My 11-year old son, Lachlan, thought your subscribers would enjoy these pictures of a turbine Thrush that we carved from a 2” x 3” block of balsa wood. Thrush After Dark
AgriCair Lights the Wisconsin Sky by Graham Lavender
Following a trip in September into the southern part of Canada, AgAir Update made a stop in Wisconsin to visit with longtime operator Jim Perrin. Jim and his wife, Julie, met me with their infectious smiles and hospitality at the local airport near Bancroft, Wisconsin where Jim and Julie operate AgriCair.

Jim grew up on a Wisconsin dairy farm in the 1980s before joining the army as a helicopter crew chief. During his tenure with the military, Jim earned his Private Pilot’s License. After he was discharged, he advanced to his Commercial Pilot’s License and promptly attended Harold’s Flying Service’s ag school in 1992. Upon graduation, Jim began spraying for Harold’s (Miller) Flying Service in a 235 HP A-9 Callair. Soon after finishing the first season with Harold in the Callair, Jim moved to Bancroft (the location of his current operation) to fly a Snow aircraft for Jim Stutesman. In 1995, Jim moved from Bancroft to Aledo, Illinois to start his own flying service. His first aircraft were 450 HP AgCats, later upgraded to 600 HP Ag-Cats. After a couple of years operating the 600 Ag-Cats, Jim changed to a geared R-1340 Thrush. Business was doing very well for the Perrins in the late 90s and in 1998 Jim purchased a second operation in Morrison, Illinois, expanding his business. The winter of 2000/2001 presented a “perfect storm”, as Jim recalls. “There were so many
factors that came together at the same time, a decrease in commodity prices and the advent of BT corn, all of it just forced my hand”. He sold his business that winter and moved back to Bancroft to partner with longtime friend, Tim Rourke. The duo initially operated two TPE331-1 powered Air Tractors, an AT-301 and AT-400, respectively. Later, they added a TPE331-10 Thrush. As Tim was nearing retirement, Jim decided to purchase the business in the winter of 2014/2015. Before Jim took full operational control of AgriCair, Julie, Jim’s wife, came onboard to run the daily operations of the business. Julie has a background in the banking industry as a loan officer, and Jim credits her exceptional organizational skills for moving his operation forward. Julie is the face of the business to the customers and handles almost all daily tasks required to successfully operate an aerial application business. This year, Julie has integrated the popular Chem-Man software ➤

into the operation, further enhancing the company’s efficiency. “Chem-Man has been great moving us from our old cumbersome system to the computer age. WPS (worker protection standards) and record keeping as well as automated reports are our biggest tangible benefits.” comments Jim. In 2016, after extensive research, Jim purchased a brand new 510G Thrush from ASI Jet Sales in Minnesota. “I looked at every new agricultural airplane available at the time, and based on my airstrip length and our average load, the 510G checked the most boxes,” says Jim. Jim hired another pilot in 2015 and with that created an unconventional arrangement amongst pilot and operator. King Airs in the Middle East. With no ag-aviation background, Jim worked out a mentorship with Mike. The caveat was Mike would own and maintain his airplane and provide the insurance. A formal contract was written between the two friends. This agreement worked so well that Mike eventually purchased the sister ship to Jim’s 510G from another operator. Where AgriCair operates in Wisconsin, vegetables are the primary crop requiring extensive care from aerial applications. Jim estimates 90% of the crops treated by air are vegetables, with potatoes being the largest of that percentage. Sweet corn, carrots, green beans, peas and beets are all a close second. A decrease in vegetable planting in the last few years has led to a more traditional crop of corn and soybeans going into the ground. The vegetables receive approximately one application a week, primarily fungicides, during the
height of the season with the second and third round usually containing an insecticide. Also, cover crops are becoming more popular in the region, primarily to prevent soil erosion and to maintain a high nutrient level over the harsh winters. This variety of crops bring with it a diverse bee population. Both pollinator and honey-producing bees thrive in Jim’s area. Couple the bee presence with the proliferation of pick-your-own berries, and Jim’s application pressure has increased significantly. In March of last year, Jim attended Aviation Specialties Unlimited (ASU) in Boise, Idaho to become proficient and certified in night vision goggles (NVG) flying. Jim then retrofitted his 510G Thrush with the STC from ASU. This STC brought the aircraft into NVG compatibility. 2017 was Jim’s first night flying season and he wonders why it took him this long to start. Mike’s 510G, coincidently, was
the first 510G to be certified for NVG operations, and had this STC when he purchased the aircraft. “I had no idea the benefits of night applications. It’s kinda like you don’t know what you don’t know,” claims Jim. “The pressure to get the job done is virtually gone. We don’t have to worry about people in the field. We don’t have to worry about bees. We don’t have to worry about the sun going down. The air is smooth and cool. I could go onand-on. On a moonlit night, with the goggles on, I dare to say I can see better than in the day,” Jim explains. The STC is very unique in that it covers both aircraft modifications as well as pilot training and recurrency requirements. All lighting needs to be NVG compatible and/or filtered, and the pilot is required to have an endorsement. The goggles themselves are not the antiquated versions that were used in the army almost ➤

30 years ago; the version AgriCair is using are the ANVIS 9 with white phosphorus versus the green so many people are accustomed to seeing in the movies. Some flying takes place during daylight hours, and Jim saves his critical fields for after 9:30 p.m. “About 10% of our flying is done after dark. The key is managing rest periods. Rest periods are the area that required the steepest learning curve for a type A personality like myself” comments Jim. Both Jim and Mike’s Thrush were initially configured identical, however this year they experimented with double the number of nozzles with the smallest possible CP straight streams on Jim’s 510G. This system worked so well the duo will be changing the other airplane (Mike’s) for the 2019 season. Jim is of the opinion that the larger straight streams aren’t as effective. The aircraft are also using the new booms with the anti-corrosive coatings from AFS with 70% full boom and 50% boom shut-off valves, in addition to left and right boom shut off valves, which Jim describes as “an amazing tool”. Jim Perrin is a true advocate for ag aviation. Serving as Treasurer for the National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) during the 2017 term, Jim is very involved with the NAAA, as well as promoting aerial application in a safe and positive manner. When asked about his outlook on our industry, Jim says “the future of ag aviation, in my opinion, is going to have several challenges, but each challenge will push us to become better. If I look at the past compared to today, most of us weren’t happy about some of the changes hoisted upon us. But, compare us to our 30 year ago selves, and I’ll take today! As that same trend continues we are the type of people who will step up and meet those new challenges. The technology that becomes available in both equipment and agriculture will make aerial application a stronger tool in the production of food, fiber and fuel.” So if you’re visiting the Wisconsin area, and want to see how night aerial application is done first hand, look Jim up. Just be sure it’s after 10 p.m.!

Keys to a Successful Night Vision Program
M
any aerial applicators have flown at night for years, but now with night vision goggles (NVGs), pilots are seeing more, maximizing productivity, enjoying constant flying schedules and doing it safer than ever before. While working with thousands of operators and regulatory agencies around the world for more than twenty years, the Aviation Specialties Unlimited team has identified three key recommendations to ensure successful implementation of your night vision program. Initially, an aerial applicator should develop a comprehensive night vision program integration plan that includes aircraft modification that has been evaluated by an aviation authority. Unfortunately, there are people and organizations that think Night Vision Imaging System (NVIS) filtration is simply a matter of applying NVG film to their equipment which is down,
right dangerous. Those that do so will certainly experience incompatible light reflections during flight, usually in the most demanding conditions where the risk is greatest. NVIS aircraft modifications should always be performed to standards published by the FAA and other aviation authorities. Fortunately, approved modification techniques and modern materials provide optimal daylight and nighttime readability, add value to your aircraft, and are more affordable than ever. Second, operators should ensure that initial and annual training is conducted by instructors with significant civil NVG experience. While there are a great number of well-experienced military NVG instructors in the civil market, their training is based on tactical operations, the opposite of civil NVG flight operations. While military pilots bring valuable NVG experience, they are rarely able to effectively teach proper use of aircraft
searchlights and how those lights can more than double the effectiveness of NVGs. IR (Infrared) searchlights are suitable only for tactical or covert operations and should be avoided in civil operations. Lastly, ensure that you are purchasing NVGs certified for flight and have them inspected and serviced on a regular basis as recommended by the manufacturer. Inspections and maintenance should be performed by personnel trained by manufacturer authorized instructors, using tools and test equipment specifically designed and calibrated for the task. ASU invites you to meet current NVG operators, get your questions answered and earn CEU credits (available in certain states) at NAAA, Aviation Specialties Unlimited Education Session, Wednesday, Dec. 5, 4 - 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.

It Ain’t Right - Part 1
I I spent the entire summer of 1996 flying the Boll Weevil Eradication Program from four locations in Texas

need to preface this by saying generally speaking lawyers are not my favorite people, especially those advertising on billboards and television. My daughter is married to a wonderful Christian man who happens to be a lawyer and I have owned three airplanes with a dear friend who is a lawyer; my disclaimer! I spent the entire summer of 1996 flying the Boll Weevil Eradication Program from four locations in Texas, which included Robstown, Alice, Ballinger, and Rotan. While stationed in Alice, one night I was lying in my cheap, strawberry-scented, motel bed watching the news when a commercial came on that really got my attention. It began with the picture of an ag plane in the distance from a head-on view. As the plane got closer and closer, it filled the entire screen and the sound of its huge radial engine filled the entire room. It was an M-18 Dromader, just like my airplane. Dang! It was my airplane.! I recognized the one-of-a-kind paint scheme on its tail as it pulled up at the end of the swath run. Then, this woman’s face and voice came on replacing the airplane and that magnificent rumbling bass of the Pezetel 1,000 horsepower engine. She said something like this, “Have you been poisoned by one of these, a crop dusting airplane? Has one of these airplanes been spraying chemicals in your neighborhood and now you are experiencing stomach cramps, vomiting, a loss of energy and sleep. You may very well have been poisoned by one of these.” And, then it showed my airplane again, but from a going away view and of course the spray was on. Then, “If you think you may have been poisoned by one of these, contact the law firm of (I don’t remember the name). You may be entitled to compensation. There will be no charge for our services unless we collect just compensation for you.” The entire spiel was repeated in Spanish. The whole time she was
talking in either language, her toll-free phone number was continuously flashing in red. The next morning I told the contractor for whom I was flying about the commercial. He knew instantly who she was. As it turned out, she and her husband, also an attorney, had filmed me from their yard. They owned a sprawling estate with about a five-acre lake in front of a huge mansion and a circular drive around the lake. The estate was fenced in by a 12-foot, wooden, batten-board fence. In the back was a large kidney-shaped swimming pool and a separately fenced-in 50 to 60-acre field with maybe ten or twelve horses and a large stable. The whole place may have encompassed 75 or more acres and the cotton fields I was working ran right up to the fence on all four sides. Needless to say, from then on, that farmer’s cotton did not get sprayed by any Boll Weevil airplanes. In 1998 I was flying my first year on the Louisiana Boll Weevil Eradication Program. A lot of my flying was around the Alexandria International Airport which meant houses and outlying neighborhoods. I have always used a lot of smoke to watch the wind so as not to have a drift problem. One of the cotton fields that I sprayed was completely isolated and away from all houses and subdivisions. It was about 10 miles northwest of the Alex Airport alongside an oxbow of the Red River. The Corps of Engineers was working on some huge construction project about 200’ from the southwest corner of my cotton field. With draglines and bulldozers, the men had dug a huge hole in the ground and were building a massive concrete structure in the hole. I had been watching the construction for several months since I began flying there in early June. I naively felt like I had developed some kind of rapport with the workers. Whenever I flew that field, the very

This let the workers know which way the wind was blowing and to let them know that I knew which way the wind was blowing. If the wind was favoring a drift towards the workers, I pulled off the job. I flew that field for the last time, I think on October the 20th. On completion of my “clean-up’’ pass across the south end, I pulled up over the Red River, wagged my wings, let out a puff of smoke and waved goodbye to my “friends” there. Would you believe those rascals tried to file a class action lawsuit against me, claiming I deliberately flew over them and sprayed them? Ten or fifteen men claimed to have suffered nausea, constricted pupils, severe headaches, etc. The EPA investigated their claims and took dirt samples around the site, which showed traces of Malathion. Of course it did! So does all the land within a mile of anywhere me or the “mist blowers” had been spraying. The mist blowers (spray trucks) spray all the borders of all the fields and they have no idea which way the wind is blowing. However, the airplane always catches the heat. I was almost hoping to have to go to court so their attorney could put me on the stand. I knew my GPS card would prove to the judge and their lawyer the true colors of those lying, looking-fora-free-lunch bums. Just another bunch of bloodsucking, freeloaders trying to scam the insurance company regardless of whose career they may injure or ruin. Super Air base at Te Kuiti with turbine Cresco and typical New Zealand loader truck.
The value of a loader driver by Mike Feeney
T
he aircraft in the photograph is a New Zealand-built Fletcher FU-24. It is powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-34AG engine (de-rated to 550 shp). This machine can haul a payload of up to 1.4 tonnes (2,204 U.S. pounds x 1.4 = 3,085 U.S. pounds) from farm airstrips of about 450 metres (1,440 feet) if level, or as short as 270 metres (865 feet) if sloping at a 20% gradient. New Zealand dry loading vehicles built by Super Air are based on an imported cab and chassis. In the center is a large tank for the aircraft’s fuel. The small cab is used for loading operations and faces to the rear. The long boom structure, to which the large bucket is attached, is seen in the folded position for driving on public roads between airstrips. Fertilizer is delivered to the farm airstrip by truck and offloaded into a large ground based bin, which protects it from rain; and it rains a rather lot in New Zealand! The two-man unit can be surprisingly productive, for example: The aircraft
A 22 | agairupdate.com
pictured, which is flown by Fraser Wilson, would typically fly about one sortie every 4.5 minutes (often faster). So, the pilot would be spreading 13 x 1.4 tonnes = 18 tonnes (roughly 40,000 pounds) per hour. If Fraser experiences a good weather day, he could probably fly about ten productive hours and apply 180 tonnes (400,000 pounds) of fertilizer. Prior to the use of aircraft in New Zealand, which began in 1949, one fit man supported by another man with a horse to deliver the fertiliser bags to him, could in hill country hand-spread a maximum of three tons (6,600 pounds). The advent of aerial topdressing changed New Zealand from a relatively poor, still-developing nation into a prosperous one and greatly helped reduce the appalling hill-country erosion problem the country was undergoing. If it had not been for the economic depression of the 1930s; followed by WWII, I have no doubt that New Zealand farmers would have been using airplanes much earlier. ➤

The value of a loader-driver is insurmountable. They toil in the cold, heat, dust and noise (and sometimes coping with grumpy pilots), yet still manage to keep an eye on “their pilot and the aircraft as they came and went on so many airstrips for so many tens of millions of sorties. Even in recent years, I personally know of two Crescos (turbine powered FU-24s) that would have suffered a major, and dangerous, main undercarriage leg failure had it not been that the loader-driver detected something wrong as the aircraft came up the airstrip. There can be few other workplaces where it is so vital that two people must work as a harmonious, co-ordinated, one might say symbiotic, team in order to assure a safe and economic operational result. This was brought home to me early in my career when my driver had to dash away due a family illness. As it was, there was a day of rare good weather on a bad airstrip, I decided to finish off the last 15 tonnes by loading the Beaver myself. Well, what an exhausting performance that was! It was only about 16 loads, but it seemed to take forever. Put a load in the bucket, drive to the aircraft and load it, back to the bin, put another load in the bucket, climb up into the cockpit, fly the load out to the sowing area, land and park, climb down, trot to the loader truck and so on. As I flew home, slumped over the control yoke, I vowed never ever again! Another event about 20 years ago was when Phil Lay, flying

a Fletcher FU-24 with a 400 BHP IO-720, and I flew a few sorties together. I had been flying my PL-12 Skyfarmer around the Waikato and Northland regions. It was interesting to see how the 400 BHP Fletcher and my 300 BHP machine compared working on the same farm. Lifting off at the same point on the slightly downsloping airstrip, Phil was carting 1,050 kilograms (2,310 U.S. pounds) and I carried a payload of 800 kilograms (1,760 U.S. pounds). We both had 90 minutes of fuel. On the climb, Phil was about seven knots faster than me and over 12 knots faster in level flight. With an extra 100 BHP helping, Phil was over 1,000 kilograms (2,200 U.S. pounds) gross weight heavier for takeoff than me. In any case, it was fun to fly with him. Phil later moved to Australia to fly turboprop powered ag aircraft.

It moved to São Sepé and formed the company SEPAL, (Serviços Especializados em Pulverizações Aéreas Ltda,) 34 years ago in 1984. Today, Omaer is owned by Jayme Ruy Textor and Mario Rodolfo Textor. In 1987, the Omaer/SEPAL group founded Aeroagricola Gabrielense that increased the ag-aircraft fleet to seven. Further expanding the business, it bought Aero Agrícola Rosariense LTDA
with its five aircraft in 1995. Mário flew from 1987 to 2000 for SEPAL and Rosariense. In the late 1990s, the combination of these companies, Omaer, SEPAL, Aeroagricola Gabrielense and Rosariense Aeroagricola, were operating up to 23 aircraft; C-188s with both Continental and Lycoming engines and Ipanemas. From 2002-2010, Omaer was a dealer for the Turbo Kruk, selling four aircraft and the PZL Dromader M-18, selling five. Between 1987 and 1993, Omaer assembled the only two Cozy aircraft in Brazil. The first aircraft is still with the Textor family, being used by Commandant Ruy Textor. ➤

In that year, Aeroagrícola Rosariense was sold. Then later in 2016, Gabrielense became owned soley by one of the owners, Luiz Carlos Pase. The Textor family kept the Omaer/SEPAL companies. Omaer specializes in aircraft maintenance, engines and accessories under the management of Mário Textor. SEPAL continues with aerial spraying under the magagement of Rodolfo Textor. Omaer sells parts and provides services throughout Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay. The company has wing and fuselage jigs for both Cessna and Ipanemas for making major airframe repairs. Since 1998, Omaer has made 23 IO-540 Lycoming engine conversions from the IO-520 Continental engine A 36 | agairupdate.com

Also, Omaer can do the same with the IO-520 and IO-550 Continental engines, converting them to alcohol. Mário designed an improved exhaust system for the C-188, keeping the muffler and special collectors to enhance engine power. Another improvement made by Omaer to the C-188 is fiberglass engine cowlings fabricated from fireproof resin, replacing the aluminum cowlings. Other fiberglass work done by Omaer is refurbishing hoppers to like-new condition. Omaer offers major engine overhauls of Lycoming and Continental engines. Overhauls come with a six-month or 200-hour warranty, using the owner’s
choice of new or overhauled cylinders. Along with engine overhauls and conversions, the company overhauls starters, generators, alternators and magnetos. And, Omaer offers complete aircraft painting in its paint shop. Twenty-two employees work at Omaer.
