$1,500 a Pound? I was steak shopping the other day at the local butcher shop. I noted the price of the filet mignon at a staggering $22.99 a pound. Well, at least you are not paying for the weight of the bone. In the meat tray next to the filet was very nice and inviting center cut thick pork chops; $3.49 pound. Hmmmm…. tough decision. I don’t know much about the livestock business, but I am guessing with market driven prices and actual cost to bring meat to the market there is a good reason for the vast difference in the cost of a pound of filet mignon versus a center cut pork chop (both are excellent on the grill). Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. In this case, I can only speculate the cow maybe had a special holding pen where it was fed organic feed (huh?), Dasani bottle water and had the latest version of the Apple wireless earbuds playing soothing music. And, surely the masseuse was scheduled no less than once a day to relieve the stress of growing into meat worth more than five times its counterpart pork. I suppose you could say the same about your turbine engine assuming you are operating one. It cost vastly more than its piston brethren, easily five times, not unlike the meat comparison. I’m not sure how much loving tender care the turbine engine received before coming to market, but I’m confident it was a lot. The difference in this analogy with meat and engines is the meat in the market has pretty much reached its final destination. Whereas the turbine engine needs your continued love and affection. Let’s move on from the pork and focus on the beef, and likewise with the piston engine versus the turbine engine. That filet is in its final moments of meeting its intended goal of a fantastic meal, while the turbine engine’s mission is only beginning after it is installed on an airframe. After you buy that beautiful filét, ready to become one of the finest meals known, it can still be destroyed by misuse. In nearly all cases, the filet will be cooked on a grill, be it charcoal, gas or pellet fired. Here’s where the “operator” of the filet can ruin the upcoming meal; too hot burning the meat, under or over cooking, wrong spices, the list can be rather long in all the ways to botch the final outcome of the filet. The same holds true for the turbine engine. It arrives in pristine condition, ready to take on many hours of hard work, rarely uttering a whimper. But, to ignore its need for loving care invites disaster. The turbine engine requires attention to detail. It is the Swiss Rolex of internal combustion engines. It should be treated as such. Complacency can be the downfall of us all. Just because our turbine engine works seemingly flawlessly through the day, hour after hour for thousands of hours, does not mean it does not need your attention. There is a cliché about turbine engines, “Pay now, or pay later, but you will pay.” In other words, money spent in the loving, tender care and attention from the first day on is money saved later in the game. Usually, it is a lot of money saved in maintenance expenses, not counting downtime. Just because you may be busier than a ‘one-arm coat hanger’ during this season, is all the more reason to pay special attention to that 350± pound power house mounted in front of your cockpit. How well your day goes depends much on how well that engine runs. Don’t overlook scheduled maintenance and for sure do not operate it outside of its limitation (aside from an emergency). If you think $22.99 for a pound of beef is expensive, try wrapping your head around $1,500 a pound, or more, for a gas turbine engine. With that in mind, for every dollar you spend to massage, play soothing music and give bottled water to your engine will come back many fold at HSI and TBO time. In closing, I’d like to comment on this month’s feature cover story about Kaydee Mitchell. Graham flew out to Missouri to interview Kaydee after Thrush Aircraft’s Terry Humphrey told us about her training and starting her ag-flying career in the cockpit of a turbine Thrush. AgAir Update has featured numerous female ag-pilots that are growing in numbers. I applaud them. Flying ag is a very demanding job, both physically and mentally. That’s not to say a woman cannot do it, because they can and they do it well. I wish the best of luck and success to Kaydee and that she continues to fulfill her dream of being an ag-pilot for a very long time.

Winglets I hope you are well. It’s been a long time since last time that we chatted. I was reading an article written by you about winglets on ag planes. My father asked me to send to you an email because he wants to know your opinion about winglets on the C188. First, I’d like to know your opinion about application quality, if they are worth installing them or if they really are not that helpful. Thanks Bill for your help. you know, I’ve flown the Thrush with these winglets and it “seems” to help with the performance. However, there are so many variables related to whether they actually are helping or not, that it is hard to say for sure. They don’t hurt the performance. It is easy to prove winglets do help reduce drift. I’ve attached a terrible quality YouTube video, but if you watch closely, especially at 4:40 and 6:20 minutes you will see the difference. The pilot has the winglet mounted on the right wing and a standard Hoerner tip on the left wing. Although the video is fuzzy/out of focus, you can see the reduction in wingtip vortices resulting in less drift. I hope this helps! Take care,—Bill Search youtube.com for AG-Tips Winglets

History Bill, I really enjoyed reading about some men that I enjoyed working with in the past. Terry Story played ball for the Cincinnati Bengals and had the nickname of ”MOOSE”. I also worked with Geoff Newcome at Southeastern Aerial and for Joe Marlin Hilliard in Florida. Both were great pilots and true gentlemen. On the other side of the U.S., I worked for John Goodman, ”the cockeyed Englishman”, back when John Walton (Walmart) and he advanced night aerial applications from flashlights to GPS. The highlight during this exciting time was having lunch in Stanfield, Arizona with Bill Marsh. Also, was being Chief Pilot for my mentor and hero, Chuck Stone at Southeastern Aerial in Fort Pierce, Florida. Thanks for sharing. See ya in Oshkosh and Orlando. The original Air Tractor! Built in the early 1950s by Central-Lamson in Yakima, Washington, this Air Tractor could dust or spray. It has spill plates on the wingtips to increase aspect ratio and provide a better application pattern. Part of the rear section of the fuselage was exposed to facilitate cleaning. The gull wing design aided in pilot visibility with instrumentation mounted in the gull roots. This aided the pilot so as not to have to look into the cockpit. Gravity-fed fuel is stored in the gull section of the upper wing. The wingspan is roughly the same as a Stearman, but slightly higher and wider. The “Air Tractor” is powered by a 450-horsepower Pratt and Whitney Wasp, Jr. R-985 engine. The aircraft is capable of carrying between 2,500 to 3,000 pounds of products. Newfound Direction KayDee Mitchell Goes From Zero Time to Ag Time

by Graham Lavender So what do you want to be when you grow up? Pick a major, pick a school or make a decision that many argue a recent high school graduate, destined for college, simply cannot make. Some make it past the college-high school hurdle to find themselves with a brand-new college path and more questions on what to do with it than answers. That quandary was exactly where Kathryn Mitchell, who goes by KayDee, found herself just a short year ago. Attending Southeast Missouri with a focus in AgriBusiness, KayDee knew she wanted to stay in agriculture, but just not sure exactly where. KayDee was raised on a large cotton and soybean farm, owned by her Uncle, Gary Murphy. Gary was continually having headaches with ground-based applications intermixed with aerial applications - namely staff and availability - to service his 20,000+ acre farm consisting of mostly cotton and soybeans. During a casual conversation, Gary mentioned to KayDee that he needs an airplane that can handle all of his acres. With her interest peaked, KayDee volunteered. The irony, however, is that KayDee had never been in an airplane. With a newfound direction, KayDee contacted her local flight school for a discovery flight and the rest became history. KayDee left the Missouri-based family farm in July 2018 for Georgia, where she would begin her flight (and eventually ag flight) training. The training to become an ag pilot took KayDee almost a year, with some delays attributed to Hurricane Michael. She was relentless in obtaining her ratings and securing actual time in a dual-cockpit Thrush. Her Uncle Gary purchased a later model 510G with anticipation of KayDee returning to Missouri. During her training, KayDee was busy forming her business

and obtaining her Part 137 Certificate. She had the foresight to partner with an industry veteren as she embarked on her ag aviation journey. KayDee hired Dow Croom to be the primary pilot for her new operation and be her mentor. While in Georgia, KayDee attended the Thrush Aircraft Factory Pilot Training Program. Terry Humphrey was her instructor for the simulator and emergency procedures portion of the course. KayDee spent many hours in the simulator practicing procedures and familiarizing herself with GPS operations. She also partnered with Matt Peed in his dual-cockpit -34 510P Thrush. He trained KayDee from onset, ensuring she was a careful and safe ag pilot. As to her training, KayDee commented, “Matt prepared me so well for my first season. We trained in real-life scenarios. When the time came to load my own airplane with fertilizer, it was nothing new or strange. My first day flying ag for myself was just as we had practiced, time and time again.” When KayDee returned to Missouri, Dow was ready for her to begin working. The 21-year-old had bought Dow’s -34 Thrush to add to her fleet of aircraft, in addition to the ➤

510G. Dow would fly the 510G while KayDee logged her first season in the -34. Quintin Saayman, who is from South Africa, keeps the airplanes loaded and sequenced during the hectic fertilizing schedules. KayDee is using Chem-Man to help manage her operation, as she is wearing multiple hats flying and running her business. KayDee jumped directly into ag flying. Her first load was in May of 2019. Every day and almost every load, Dow is with KayDee on the radio and at the loading pad, making sure things are going as planned. As the nature of the business, A 12 | agairupdate.com

KayDee’s second load as a full-time ag pilot dealt her a stuck hopper dump gate. Luckily, she kept her cool and relied on the training she had to bring the aircraft back safely, loaded. KayDee’s first season is going to be mostly dry work. She will spend the next few months becoming intimately familiar with the aircraft and the hours required to do the job. Her business, M Aviation, has a new hangar in the works complete with secured chemical storage and office space. It seems KayDee had no problem deciding what she wanted to do, “when she grew up”.

Fuel System Contamination

Water contamination can occur in the fuel tank or in the aircraft’s own tank

There are several forms of aviation fuel contamination. Among the main pollutants that reduce the quality of the fuel for combustion engines are water, oxidation, soot, dust, etc. This article focuses on water contamination. Water can be present in the fuel in two ways; dissolved in the fuel and suspended in the fuel. Water (in suspension) may be detected with the naked eye. Water contamination can occur in the fuel tank or in the aircraft’s own tank, so it is strongly recommended to drain all tanks daily before flying the aircraft. All the mentioned forms of contamination may cause damage or malfunction of fuel metering devices, flow dividers, pumps and engine injectors. When kerosene is contaminated by water, microbial development occurs produced by various forms of microorganisms that live and multiply at the interface between water and fuel. These microorganisms are anaerobic; that is, they do not need oxygen to survive and they can develop into bacteria and fungi. What is normally seen in aircraft fuel tanks is a brown sediment that is the result of these

organisms feeding on hydrocarbons. Bacteria or fungi that live in suspension between fuel and water, generate a red, brown, gray or black “goo” that if not properly controlled by frequent removal water contamination may become extensive. These organisms feed on the hydrocarbons found in fuels that need water in order to multiply. Microorganisms have a tendency to combine, usually appearing with a brown layer that acts as an absorber to contain greater amount of moisture. This combination accelerates the development of microorganisms. The development of these microorganisms may not only interfere with flow and fuel quantity indication, but affect injector nozzles, fuel control unit (FCU), fuel pump and corrosion in fuel tanks. A simple morning drainage of fuel tanks can greatly alleviate these problems, extend engine life, avoid excessive maintenance costs and greatly increase flight safety. Words We are living a new era of communication. A flood of information hits us daily, without filtering and without much judgment. The Internet has become a veritable showcase of opinions, but not necessarily scientific findings. In general, what we read on social networks is a virtual court. And fatally, agricultural aviation is sailing in the same confused and unruly seas.

I believe, rather than expressing our opinion, we must work to educate society about aerial spraying.

Some will say they are not affected by the virtual world, so they are safe. Really? That citizen you meet on the street asks you if you are the pilot who is “throwing poison” on his food, has been most likely influenced by the media and social networks. It is a fact that we should face the need to be properly educated and equipped with true technical information to participate in these “clashes on the streets.” I believe, rather than expressing our opinion, we must work to educate society about aerial spraying. Recently, there was a lot of talk about what was called “the poison bundle”, a rather pejorative and biased nickname for bill 6.299 / 02 (Brazil). Liberal people engaged in a real campaign where they repeated systematically, “They want to put more poison in our food.” Judging by the argument, they did not even bother to read the legislative bill. As true zombies, a large group of people came together stating, “You represent me.” in support of these liberals who truly believe it is possible to grow crops without a drop of defense to fight pests and increase productivity.

This episode is a clear example of the need to get involved in the process of educating the community. Then, each citizen can draw his conclusions based on truthful information and not on fads that only serve to give popularity to those who live to sell the image of defenders of the ecological cause. This is not to say that people will fall in love with what we do; this is not needed. Just like no one likes to go to the doctor or take an injection, but understand that it is something necessary. By understanding the need and criteria of aerial application, many will continue to dislike; but they will learn to respect our profession. Nowadays, it is common for the ag-pilot to be doing his job when someone comes up with a cell phone pointing to the aircraft in order to take pictures and videos. A jury composed of who knows almost nothing of the subject, but that is ready to point and document any slip. Or anything that looks like a slip. Information and good practices are our greatest defenses. None of us are free to make mistakes. But there is a huge difference in failing by a judgment failure (when you believe you are doing

Ignorance is an opportunistic enemy. Ignoring procedures is a dangerous trap from which we must not enter. Our attitude should be based on discipline and a search for knowledge. Pre-flight inspections, reading and understanding the aircraft and GPS operating manuals, active participation in conventions and recurrency training courses should be part of a pilot’s routine. Those times of flying only in isolated areas are gone; as well as the time when returning with crop leaves on the landing gear was a happy customer guarantee. Nowadays we have technology to evaluate the quality of the application. We provide application maps to the growers. We have a wide range of options for the most modern GPS units. There is already a system that allows one to follow virtually in real time the aerial application. I saw this system closely and my lower jaw dropped in amazement. It is possible to know the area being sprayed, the application rate, flight height, many details before the pilot even lands back on base, the map of the application is available. Yes these are modern times, but that does not replace the powerful weapon of communication; words! Recently, I signed up to be part of a program offered by a company in the United States, where one of the topics will be the enhancement of communication for agricultural employees. I am hoping that my application will be approved, because I believe that effective communication is essential and should be used. We walk on eggs from the beginning of our profession. We are directly responsible for the health of people and animals, the environment and a large amount of money required to keep the aircraft flying and its tanks full of fuel and chemicals. And, we have to deal with minds terrified by our profession, mostly due to lack of communication. Juliana Torchetti, began her aviation career as a flight instructor. Boo Ray and Ag Flying

The basics of ag flying may be relatively simple, but after more than 50 years of flying ag, I am still learning.

When I was in high school and college, on weekends and sometimes during the week, we would have a friendly (usually) poker game. Often times we would play “Boo Ray.” Boo Ray is a five-card gambling game that I am sure must have originated in south Louisiana amongst the Cajuns. It is a blood thirsty and cutthroat game, but if you are the winner, you stand to win big bucks in a short time. Of course, you could also lose your “posterior” in an equal amount of time. I won’t go into details how the game is played, but I do want to say that the basic rules of the game are very simple to learn and that’s how a lot of suckers got sucked into the game and most certainly did lose their posterior! Boo Ray may be a simple game of which the basics are easy to learn, but it takes a lot of experience and money to become a master at the game. And that, my friend, is exactly the way it is in ag flying. I recently had a retired airline pilot go through my turbine transition course. When he was about half way through the course, he made a comment that went something like this, “I never realized there was so much to learn and so much to be acutely aware of all of the time!” This student hit the nail on the head. The basics of ag flying may be relatively simple, but after more than 50 years of flying ag, I am still learning. I honestly think I am getting better with each new season. I will stop learning when they are throwing dirt on my casket! I once flew over the beautiful rolling hills of North Dakota. Incidentally, these are some of the nicest people with whom I have ever been associated. The fields generally are not so difficult to fly regarding obstacles like trees and wires, however, following the up-and-down terrain at

150 mph is a new ball game for this old crop duster. I certainly learned a different phase of agflying. I had a student that I trained for a basic agcourse. He shortly thereafter landed a “seat” not too far away in Rayville, Louisiana. I heard from another student that the new ag-pilot had returned to Rayville to visit with other students and expound on his newly acquired vast knowledge of ag-flying that he had learned after his training. He made the comment that I was not teaching the best way to turn around an ag-plane, but that his way was far faster and a better way to do it. In essence, he would stay close to the ground, establish about a 70-80 degree bank then haul back hard on the stick, pulling several Gs. If he continues to fly like this, it won’t be long before we will read about him in the NTSB accident report... the classic accelerated stall. To begin with, as I remember this young man, he had an attitude about him from the start. Honestly and candidly speaking, I really am not so much concerned with his safety as I am with other ag-flying novices that he will influence. God forbid that any one of us has a serious accident in order to be a safer and wiser ag pilot. I would hope and pray that he (any of us) could learn from someone else’s pilot error accident and not learn from firsthand experience...like I did. I was exactly like this young man during my first year of flying ag and also, just like him, no one could tell me a darn thing. It took the good Lord to teach me and he is still teaching. Just like playing Boo Ray...I am still learning. And so as per always, be safe, have fun, make money and keep on learning!

White paper bags filled with sterile flies to combat the Mediterranean fly plague may be eliminated. However, a transition from bags to a special “cold adult” application has begun. Developed by the Institute of Agricultural Health and Quality Mendoza (ISCAMen) and Aerotec Argentina, “cold adult” technology was developed. The “cold adult” system consists of placing sterilized fly pupae in individual containers with a capacity of up to 55,000 pupae. These containers are grouped in stacked towers of 20 units and can provide up to one million pupae per square meter. When the emerged flies reach optimum sexual maturity, a “cold shock” is made by placing the stacked towers in refrigerator chambers set at -2 °C for approximately 40 minutes. The flies become lethargic, which allows their separation and placement into release boxes. This allows the release of the flies without a need for bags, which makes the technique more ecological, efficient and sustainable. Aerotec Argentina primarily uses a Tecnam P2006T twin engine aircraft for the release flights, along with a fleet of single engine Cessna aircraft. The aircraft have been modified for this application. The aircraft have adjustable metering devices that distribute the flies according to the densities of flies established for each release block area. The new system allows release of hydrated, sterile Mediterranean flies at sexual maturity. Not only is there a savings on the elimination of white paper bags, this application method lowers the application costs since it doubles the capacity of the aircraft. Application timing is dictated by weather, particularly temperature. By doubling the capacity of the Tecnam P2006T, more area can be treated before being restricted by temperature. Source: FeArCa

In the midst of a very turbulent week for DJI, the Chinese drone maker is holding an event in Washington, DC that focusses on improving the safety in the skies. In the Ronald Reagan Building, about seventy industry people gathered to listen to DJI’s latest developments and roadmap to safely integrate unmanned aircraft into the national airspace. DJI announced that it will make a huge step towards improving safety in the skies. Among other things, the company has committed to installing AirSense technology that receives ADS-B signals from nearby airplanes and helicopters into every DJI drone over 250 grams from January 2020 forward.

DJI Adds Airplane And Helicopter Detectors To New Consumer Drones ADS-B Receivers In Consumer-Grade Drones Will Set A New Standard In Drone Safety DJI Unveils Safety Improvement Agenda For Drone Makers And Regulators DJI, the world’s leader in civilian drones and aerial imaging technology, today strengthened its role as the drone industry’s safety leader at a Washington, D.C. event by committing to install airplane and helicopter detectors in new consumer drones, part of a 10-point plan to ensure the world’s skies remain safe in the drone era. All new DJI drone models released after January 1, 2020 that weigh more than 250 grams will include AirSense technology, which receives ADS-B signals from nearby airplanes and helicopters and warns drone pilots if they appear to be on a collision course. This will be the largest single deployment of ADS-B collision awareness technology to date, and sets a new standard by putting professional-grade aviation safety technology in drones available to everyone. AirSense can detect airplanes and helicopters from miles away, farther than a drone pilot can hear or see them, and displays their locations on the screen of the pilot’s remote controller. It has previously been available only on some professional-grade DJI drones, and this video

explains how it will work in consumer drones as well. “DJI leads the drone industry in developing safety technology and education, and we continue that tradition today by setting higher expectations for ourselves, our competitors and regulators,” said Brendan Schulman, DJI Vice President for Policy & Legal Affairs. “DJI was the first company to offer geofencing, automatic altitude limits, return-to-home technology and other safety features to the world’s growing community of personal and professional drone pilots. We believe our efforts have helped drones attain their enviable safety record, and we expect our new agenda will further improve safety even as more drones take to the skies.” DJI’s AirSense commitment is the first of 10 points in “Elevating Safety,” its new plan for how DJI, other drone manufacturers, and government officials around the world can maintain drones’ admirable safety record. “Elevating Safety” is based on a comprehensive evaluation of available drone safety data, which concludes that most drone incident data collected by government regulators is misleading or useless, and shows that many media accounts of midair drone incidents are false or unproven. “When the public, media and regulators focus on outrageous incidents that did not occur, it draws attention away from risks that are less sensational but more prevalent,” Schulman said. “There has never been a confirmed collision between a drone and an airplane, but drones have struck low-flying helicopters at least twice. This led us to focus on AirSense as the next opportunity to make drones safer, and to embrace the challenge of adding ADS-B receivers to consumer drone models that are already in development.” Other aviation organizations agree that installing AirSense in mainstream consumer drones is an important step for protecting airplanes and helicopters and the people who fly in them. DJI’s ambitious schedule aligns with the FAA’s upcoming requirement for essentially all airplanes and helicopters to be equipped with ADS-B transmitters in controlled airspace, starting January 1, 2020. “Expanding the availability of AirSense to DJI pilots is a meaningful step forward in safely integrating UAS and reducing conflicts with manned aircraft,” said Rune Duke, Senior Director of Airspace and Air Traffic at the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. “ADS-B In is used daily by thousands of pilots to increase their situational awareness and ensure safe operations. As the general aviation fleet further equips with ADS-B Out and other NextGen technology, enhancements like AirSense will allow all pilots to maximize their investment. They deserve real credit for this safety initiative. DJI’s safety policy is beyond what we have been urging the FAA and other drone manufacturers to require for multiple years. We appreciate DJI’s commitment to all airspace users’ well-being and look forward to working with them on equipping sense and avoid technology to their drones to complement the ADS-B system.”
